Abstract:
Green tides are unattached blooms of green macroalgae (seaweeds) that occur globally and can attain vast proportions. The main components of the blooms are species of the sea lettuce genus Ulva, a sheet-like green seaweed, which can form unusual morphs under these conditions (Blomster et al., 2002). In estuaries and shallow coastal embayments drifting or cast-up macroalgae can reach quantities of up to 27 kg wet weight m-2. Green tides have been researched extensively since Fletcher's (1996) review highlighted their importance, but they came to wide public attention at the time of the 2008 Qin

The cost of producing organic crops is increasing. Agricultural wastes can be used as biostimulants to increase plant growth and productivity and reduce the dependence on chemical fertilizers. A pouch assay and a potted greenhouse experiment were conducted to investigate the effect of pyroligneous acid (PA) and sea lettuce (SL) on kale (Brassica oleracea subsp. acephala (DC.) Metzg) seed germination and growth. Although previous studies have demonstrated that these two biostimulants could promote plant germination and growth, there is little research to compare their effects on seed germinatio

Greenhouse grown transplants of 23 lettuce varieties were produced in 1” diameter speedling flats, seeded May 1, transplanted to the field in early June when plants were 4 weeks of age. Transplants were grown in a commercial potting media of peat-vermiculite-perlite. Loose leaf, butterhead, crispbead or iceberg and cos types were included, field-planted at the Elam Swarey farm in Burkes Garden, Tazewell County, Virginia, at an elevation of 3,400 ft. above sea level. No crisphead (iceberg) varieties were found to be satisfactory in yield or quality for area conditions. Of loose leaf varieties,

This work evaluated the biofloc technology cultivation of Ulva ohnoi on its growth performance and biocompounds contents. Ulva ohnoi was cultivated under an initial density of 6 g·L-1 for 28 days using water from a biofloc tank which was exchanged daily at a 90% rate. Temperature, salinity, and illuminance were measured daily. Algae growth and their density was adjusted weekly. Results showed an average plant growth of 1.15%·day-1 (49.5 g·week-1). A significant difference was observed when comparing the initial (2.64 ± 0.3%) and final (4.62 ± 0.2%) ulvan concentration, in addition to a protein

Growth and production of enterotoxins A and D (SEA, SED) by two strains of Staphylococcus aureus were determined in salad bar ingredients and clam chowder. Salad bar ingredients included lettuce, canned black olives, canned green olives, tomato, green pepper, blue cheese salad dressing, blue cheese crumbles, celery, and croutons. Total S. aureus were determined by plate count on Baird-Parker agar. Enterotoxins were quantified by using an ELISA technique. S. aureus did not survive in salad dressing, with pH 4.3. With the exception of olives and blue cheese, S. aureus survived on all ingredients
