Abstract:
An organism's epithelium provides essential protection against mechanical stress and pathogenic infection, as well as specialised secretory and sensory functions. Intriguingly, at the end of the first larval moult in C. elegans, epidermal P cells, which until now have comprised the majority of the ventral epidermis, migrate and remodel, relinquishing their epidermal role before taking on neuroectoblast fate. This leaves a ventral 'hole' in the architecture of the C. elegans epidermis. This work describes how this hole is filled by a hitherto-overlooked ventral intercalation event that mirrors

The stem cell-like seam cells of the nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, represent a tractable and powerful model for studying stem cell biology. rnt-1, the worm homologue of the mammalian RUNX family of transcription factors, together with the CBFβ homologue bro-1, is essential for the proliferation of the seam cells. RUNX genes and CBFβ are important regulators of stem cell development in mammals, and are associated with a variety of cancers. In this dissertation, SrO-La₂O₃-A₂O₃-B₂O₃3-SiO₂ based seal glasses have been developed and composition-structure-property relationships have been investigated. B₂O₃ free SrO-La₂O₃-Al₂O₃-SiO₂ based se

Basal-like breast cancer represents a subgroup of mammary cancers associated with a particularly poor prognosis, as they are refractory to current targeted therapies employed for the treatment of breast cancer. In this work I aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), a targeted breast cancer treatment, in combination with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), for the treatment of basal-like breast cancer, using MDA-MB-231 cell as an in vitro model of the disease. A significant reduction in MDA-MB-231 cell number and a significant increase in cytot

Abstract:
The principal aim of this research was to provide a detailed understanding of the performance of gas turbine engines inside indoor sea-level test beds. In particular the evaluation of both thrust correction factors and the estimation of the mass flow entering the test cell were at the core of the research. The project has been fully sponsored by Rolls-Royce pIc. Initially, their principal objective was to assess the relevance and accuracy of CFD when applied to thrust measurement inside indoor test beds with an intended outcome of minimising the use of expensive experimental measurements.

Abstract:

The destruction of the ozone layer, concomitant with a projected enhancement in ocean stratification, will increase the dosage of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), as well as sea surface temperature and incident light level. The diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrus and other Antarctic phytoplankton will therefore be exposed to, and require protection from, increasing levels of damaging UVR, under elevated temperatures and light conditions. It has been hypothesized that phytoplankton utilize photoprotective pigments and the production of mycosporine-like amino acids as strategies against UVB-i

Stoll, Joshua D. "Graphene Membranes as Electron Transparent Windows for Environmental Spectroscopy and Microscopy." OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/917.

Abstract:
A methodology was developed for isolation and transfer of 1-4 monolayer graphene from both Cu and Ni foil and Ni/SiO2/Si layered substrate types for use as electron transparent windows in environmental electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The graphene membranes were transferred onto disc "frames" made of stainless steel containing 3-10 μm diameter apertures. Such frames "windowed" with the graphene membrane are assembled into the custom designed environmental cell (e-cell) which contain a specimen immersed in the desired liquid or gaseous environment, and are compatible for imaging with a con
