Information available in digital form has grown phenomenally in recent years. Finding the required information has become a difficult and challenging task. This is primarily due to the diversity and enormous volume of information available and the change in the nature of people now seeking information – from experts to ordinary users of desktop computers with varying interest and objectives. The problem of finding relevant information is further impacted by the poor retrieval effectiveness of most current information retrieval (IR) systems that are primarily based on keyword indexing technique

In phase one, using maximal variation sampling ten teachers from a single primary school were asked to describe what children in their class had searched for in the prior academic year. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is a relatively new approach that professionals are using to cope with the ever-growing body of literature in their fields. The goal of EBP is to effectively use this body of literature to improve professional practice, thus improving the quality of services. A major component of EBP is asking a focused, well-built question, referred to in this paper as an Evidence Based Practice Question (EBPQ). This paper reports the findings of an exploratory study that examines the use an EBPQ to respond to reference questions emailed to a university library reference desk.
