Abstract:
Piling is expensive but often necessary when building large structures, for example bridges. Some pile types, such as steel core piles, are very costly and it is therefore of great interest to keep the number piles in a pile group to a minimum. This thesis deals with optimization of pile groups with respect to placement, batter and angle of rotation in order to minimize the number of piles. A program has been developed, where two optimization algorithms named Genetic Algorithm and Direct Search, and four objective functions have been used. These have been tested and compared to find the most suitable for pile group optimization. Three real cases, two bridge supports and one culvert, have been studied, using the program.  It has been difficult to draw any clear conclusions since the results have been ambiguous. This is probably because only three cases have been tested and the results are very problemdependent. The outcome depends, for example, on the starting guess and settings for the optimization. However, the results show that the Genetic Algorithm is somewhat more robust in its ability to remove piles than Direct Search and is therefore to prefer in pile group optimization.

Software Reuse has been considered a key concept to increase the quality and productivity of the software development by the reuse of existing artifacts, avoiding build new ones from scratch. However, In order to obtain effective benefits from the software reuse is necessary a set of complementary resources such as: education, active management support and the introduction of appropriate process and tools. In fact, resources that provide mechanism to ease the access of reusable components, such as search and retrieval tools, appear as potential instruments in favor of reuse programs adoption in the organizations. One of the challenges of the search and retrieval tools is how to make that existing components returned have a significant relevance. In this sense, the use of the faceted approach rises as a suitable alternative. This approach proposes the creation of a vocabulary supported by attributes, dividing the components into group of classes based on pre-defined keywords, increasing the level of precision and providing a more flexible classification. Thus, this work presents an extension of search and retrieval tool of reusable components, source code in particular, using the faceted classification approach. In addition, also was developed an auxiliary tool to aid the Domain expert to perform his activities using this approach. Finally, an experimental study evaluates the proposed solution

Abstract:
This exploratory study was designed to describe the Internet search behaviors of deaf adolescents using Internet search engines to complete fact-based search tasks. Because of the limited English reading skills of deaf students, and the complexity of Internet search results, effective Internet searching can be a challenging task. The study examined such Internet search behaviors of high school deaf students as query formation, query modification, Web site identification, and Web site selection. Supervisors from four regional day school programs for the deaf from throughout Texas allowed students to participate in the study. The study, consisting of two fact based search tasks, occurred in the individual computer networks of each of the regional day school programs for the deaf. As students conducted two search tasks they completed a task analysis of the Web sites selected, and the reasons for their selections. Once all of the searches were completed, the researcher determined if there were any commonalities in the search behaviors of the research participants. The research also identified the processes used by deaf students to compensate for limited English reading abilities while navigating Internet search engines results that were typically written well above the average reading level of deaf students. Once students completed the search tasks, each of the task analyses were evaluated to ascertain if there were any commonalities among student behaviors while online completing the search tasks. The results demonstrated deaf high school students were unable to initiate, conduct, analyze, or validate effective Internet searches in response to fact-based search tasks.

It is not difficult to find examples that show the unquestionable importance of stereochemistry in human life and economy: On the one hand, chirality is unfortunately the most well known one due to the Thalidomide Disaster. On the other hand, there is a no less important example in recent years in the field of molecular conformations: the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. In this sense, we think that it is worth paying more attention to conformational studies due to their indisputable relevance.
A 2-stage process for studying Conformational Spaces of large macromolecules involving Simulated Annealing (SA) Conformational Search followed by series of Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations is proposed in this PhD Thesis. Both methodologies are well-known ones in the Molecular Modelling area of knowledge; nevertheless, the main contribution made by this research work is the development of enhanced methodological techniques -suitable molecular descriptors, saturation analysis and trajectory overlapping ratio- for monitoring quantitatively how SA and MD calculations evolve.

Ahmad, Siti. "A study of search neighbourhood in the bees algorithm." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/19127/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Bees Algorithm, a heuristic optimisation procedure that mimics bees foraging behaviour, is becoming more popular among swarm intelligence researchers. The algorithm involves neighbourhood and global search and is able to find promising solutions to complex multimodal optimisation problems. The purpose of neighbourhood search is to intensify the search effort around promising solutions, while global search is to enable avoidance of local optima. Despite numerous studies aimed at enhancing the Bees Algorithm, there have not been many attempts at studying neighbourhood search. This research investigated different kinds of neighbourhoods and their effects on neighbourhood search. First, the adaptive enlargement of the search neighbourhood was proposed. This idea was implemented in the Bees Algorithm and tested on a set of mathematical benchmarks. The modified algorithm was also tested on single objective engineering design problems. The experimental results obtained confirmed that the adaptive enlargement of the search neighbourhood improved the performance of the proposed algorithm. Normally, a symmetrical search neighbourhood is employed in the Bees Algorithm. As opposed to this practice, an asymmetrical search neighbourhood was tried in this work to determine the significance of neighbourhood symmetry. In addition to the mathematical benchmarks, the algorithm with an asymmetrical search neighbourhood was also tested on an engineering design problem. The analysis verified that under certain measurements of asymmetry, the proposed ii algorithm produced a similar performance as that of the Bees Algorithm. For this reason, it was concluded that users were free to employ either a symmetrical or an asymmetrical search neighbourhood in the Bees Algorithm. Finally, the combination of adaptive enlargement and reduction of the search neighbourhood was presented. In addition to the above mathematical benchmarks and engineering design problems, a multi-objective design optimisation exercise with constraints was selected to demonstrate the performance of the modified algorithm. The experimental results obtained showed that this combination was beneficial to the proposed algorithm.

Sushmita, Shanu. "Study of result presentation and interaction for aggregated search." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2012. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3289/.

Full text
Abstract:
The World Wide Web has always attracted researchers and commercial search engine companies due to the enormous amount of information available on it. "Searching" on web has become an integral part of today's world, and many people rely on it when looking for information. The amount and the diversity of information available on the Web has also increased dramatically. Due to which, the researchers and the search engine companies are making constant efforts in order to make this information accessible to the people effectively. Not only there is an increase in the amount and diversity of information available online, users are now often seeking information on broader topics. Users seeking information on broad topics, gather information from various information sources (e.g, image, video, news, blog, etc). For such information requests, not only web results but results from different document genre and multimedia contents are also becoming relevant. For instance, users' looking for information on "Glasgow" might be interested in web results about Glasgow, Map of Glasgow, Images of Glasgow, News of Glasgow, and so on. Aggregated search aims to provide access to this diverse information in a unified manner by aggregating results from different information sources on a single result page. Hence making information gathering process easier for broad topics. This thesis aims to explore the aggregated search from the users' perspective. The thesis first and foremost focuses on understanding and describing the phenomena related to the users' search process in the context of the aggregated search. The goal is to participate in building theories and in understanding constraints, as well as providing insights into the interface design space. In building this understanding, the thesis focuses on the click-behavior, information need, source relevance, dynamics of search intents. The understanding comes partly from conducting users studies and, from analyzing search engine log data. While the thematic (or topical) relevance of documents is important, this thesis argues that the "source type" (source-orientation) may also be an important dimension in the relevance space for investigating in aggregated search. Therefore, relevance is multi-dimensional (topical and source-orientated) within the context of aggregated search. Results from the study suggest that the effect of the source-orientation was a significant factor in an aggregated search scenario. Hence adds another dimension to the relevance space within the aggregated search scenario. The thesis further presents an effective method which combines rule base and machine learning techniques to identify source-orientation behind a user query. Furthermore, after analyzing log-data from a search engine company and conducting user study experiments, several design issues that may arise with respect to the aggregated search interface are identified. In order to address these issues, suitable design guidelines that can be beneficial from the interface perspective are also suggested. To conclude, aim of this thesis is to explore the emerging aggregated search from users' perspective, since it is a very important for front-end technologies. An additional goal is to provide empirical evidence for influence of aggregated search on users searching behavior, and identify some of the key challenges of aggregated search. During this work several aspects of aggregated search will be uncovered. Furthermore, this thesis will provide a foundations for future research in aggregated search and will highlight the potential research directions.

Information search is the principal application on the Internet; because Internet can help consumers to compare the price and the attribute of the product, advance the economic benefit of market. Besides, it can also make consumer consider more products under lower search cost and promote the quality of purchase decision. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors that may influence consumer’s information search behavior. Discussing how different search motive, search cost, search efficiency and product involvement influence consumers’ information search behavior on the Internet by citing cost-effect and product involvement theories. The study almost used E-mail to transmit questionnaires and totally collected 412 effective initial data. Following are the results of this study: 1.When consumers’ market maven motive, browsing Enjoyment motive and shopping motive are higher, they will search more price and non-price information search on the Internet. 2.Search efficiency has small effect on information search behavior on Internet. Because consumer having strong ability of information processing will search more information. Whether the time of using Internet is long or short, it will not influence consumers’ information search behavior. 3.When neglecting the difference of demographic variables, we find that consumers don’t care the direct cost of Internet when they search price information. Besides, consumers have low inclination to pay for the content of information. Time pressure will not influence consumers’ information search behavior. 4.Women think of using Internet to search price information as a recreation, but men don’t think so. The percentage of consumers’ shopping experience on the Internet is growing year by year. All age, level of education and disposable income has no remarkable effect on information search behavior on the Internet. 5.Compare with students, non-students will search more price information for high browsing pleasure; non-students will search less price information because of high direct cost; non-students will search more price information through high ability of information processing.

Abstract: With the immense growth of information on the World Wide Web, it is a time-consuming task to find the demanded information on the Web. Although many search engines exist to help users search for the information, most of them show the search results as text lists in scrolled pages. In this way, users may need to check every list entry to assure if it contains the demanded information. The list-based interface conceals the relations among search results and results in encumbrances to searching. In this thesis, we propose a visual interface. This interface displays the search results collected from multiple back-end search engines to a computer screen at the same time, and helps users search the Web and discover important information. There are two main advantages. 1. Users can view the search results of multiple search engines at the same time. In the prototype system, search results presently consist of six search engines. 2. If the Web pages retrieved in the search results have hyperlinks with each other or they belong to the same site, the hyperlink relevance will be shown. At present, we have developed a prototype system to test our visualization functionality. In the exhibition of information, the visual interface has provided a fine visual expression. In the near future, this interface will be applied to Internet technologies and help users search for information efficiently.

According to a survey conducted in 2008 by iProspect, an American search engine company, 68% of search engine users click on the top 10 search results, 85% users click on the top 20 search results and 92% users click on the top 30 search results. Therefore, how to make your websites appear in the first three pages of search results becomes the crucial issue. The purpose of this paper is to develop a system of search engine optimization by researching and analyzing the biggest search engine of the world, Google, hoping it can become the influential references to improve the website rankings in the search results. For example, tweaking the structure and design of the websites, one of the major SEO factors, can get a better position in the search results, and then increase exposures and traffics without pouring a large amount of money on advertisement. It also creates more marketing opportunities to establish company identities and brand awareness. The research will elaborate the process of search engine optimization and analyze the performance of optimized websites on the search results. We will present the website examples implemented with some SEO factors, such as keyword targeting, construction of search engine friendly sites (no-barrier websites) and link strategy, etc. Through measures of analysis and examination on the website examples, we will learn what works effectively in increasing the ranking, and further clarify the goals and objectives.

With the rapid growth of Internet, there are a large number of digital images. How to retrieve the digital image in database efficiently has been an important issue. Traditionally, we tag each image with several keywords, so that users can input keywords to search image. However, this method is more suitable for users who have already understood the searched object clearly. Meanwhile, an accurate query result can be obtained only with adequate keywords information. Generally, non-professional consumers search objects with an ambiguous concept. That is, probably, the name of the product is unknown, or the name contains no characteristic which they describe. That makes query result give users a low search ranking. Clothes products contain many characteristics which are difficult to describe in keywords, such as texture, shape, or the relationship between object and space. Based on this issue, we develop an image-based visual clothing retrieval system, which extracts and uses the features of clothing images to find objects that are difficult to describe by text, or without text annotations. In the study, we address these two issues by developing (1) extract appropriate feature description from clothes image, (2) build retrieval strategies of clothes image in database. We propose a part-based retrieval system framework, which provides three visual search conditions; that is, neck, colors and the region-of-interest, to assist in finding clothes products efficiently. And, we experiment on an image database with about 1891 general-purpose images, results showing that our approach is more helpful for picking clothes product.

The growth of the Internet is giving us access to unprecedented amounts of information. The search engines and catalogue systems can do an excellent job of finding relevant sites or pages. But many of these search engines still have some problems. Therefore, a new search technology, Meta-Search Engine, provide users a completely information and more efficiency search environment. Meta-Search Engines can send query string to the all of the search engines on the Internet. It integrated and filtered the redundant or duplicate information in all the search results. Meta-Search Engines will save users a lot of time for search. But there have some shortcoming with design of the Meta-Search Engine. Savvy Search Engine is the first one of the completely Meta-Search Engine until now. It used 中介索引檔 to build and integrated all the index of the search engines on the Internet. Nevertheless Savvy Search Engine’s Meta-index is inefficiency. Our research proposed two new Meta-index methods (Success Ration and Document Ratio) to improve Savvy Search Engine’s disadvantages. We also implemented a new Meta-Search Engine, named Uni-Search. Our research and Uni-Search Engine is towards to solve the problems of Meta-Search Engine design and improve its performance.

Job referral business began in Europe in the 15th century. The purpose is to help the unemployed minority, or to fulfill certain market demand for human resources. In the early 19th century, the economy recovery in America supported the prosperity of job referral business. At this time job referral mainly served as a medium for referring jobs – ie: finding jobs for work seekers. In the early 1970''s, there were two changes in job referral business. One is the payers shifted from job applicants to head recruiters. Its operation style also changed from a job referral agency to two new forms: one is retainer head hunting service, with down payment, and the other is contingency service. Therefore, this paper intends to study the following questions: 1.With different types of head hunting operations and service charge standards, what are the different jobs and talents development strategies? 2. With different types of head hunting operations and service charge standards, what are the different interview and selection processes? 3. After an applicant reports to the job, what''s the after-service role of a head hunter? 4. What is the operational difference between local head hunters and the foreign ones? Although the study only interviewed four companies, these companies are carefully selected to represent a complete scope of the market. The conclusion of our study is as follows: 1. Foreign invested head hunters are easier to get retainer contracts. 2. Local head hunters mostly rely on the company owners to develop job market. Foreign invested companies leverage the operational system to do the same job. 3. High-level head hunters use telephone calls to source head list. 4. High-level head hunters evaluate talents mostly based on credit check and structured interview. 5. High-level head hunters have to pay for their service warranty. Finally, this paper practically provides three suggestions for effectively running a head hunting business: 1.The establishment of a standard operation system. 2. The emphasis of internal employee training and development. 3. The establishment of company ethics and professional behavior guidelines.

Expenses on internet advertising in Taiwan was 49.5 hundred million TWD in 2007, and some even predict that the market scale will be expanded to 35.4 billion USD globally. Online marketing has become the main practice; and search engine plays a very important part that people can not even ignore. Keyword search advertising is a form of online marketing practice whereby an advertisement is displayed on a search engine results page. The advertisement is triggered by the keyword used in the search. Many search engines sell trademarks as keywords as well, allowing competitors to purchase them as keywords for the purpose of displaying their own advertising. Some have argued that this practice should lead to liability for trademark infringement or dilution. Also, the use of metatags of website may cause the same issues. This article is a research on such legal issues of internet keyword search advertising which has three parts. First, it states advertising theory, observes the influence of developing search engine on marketing, and introduces keyword search advertising. Second, it restates law and regulations of U.S. and Taiwan in advertising and communication area, and makes comparison and analysis of them. Third, it discusses the legal issues, especially of trademark, on website metatags and keyword search advertising, analyses cases developed in U.S. courts, and constructs probable solutions for Taiwan when facing the same issues.

Keyword marketing has been used extensively in all kinds of marketing media recently. Hints of searching specific keywords online can be easily found in the content of advertisement appearing on television, radio, newspapers magazines, billboards, and so forth. Nevertheless, previous marketing researches have not yet explored and investigate this increasingly important issue. This study intends to fill this gap. It attempts to understand under what circumstances people would be aware of keyword marketing activities. Furthermore, when people are willing to search online, do they indeed use the hinted specific keywords in advertisement or other terms for online searching? Focus group interviews were first conducted in this research to understand the reasons that people are willing to (or not willing to) use hinted keywords to search online. The research framework and variables were then constructed and confirmed by reviewing the literature thoroughly. Four hundred and fifty paper questionnaires and three hundred and forty eight online questionnaires were distributed to collect needed data for hypothesis testing. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and SPSS were employed to conduct statistical analyses and test hypotheses. The results show that (a) the degree of advertisement involvement has a positive effect on the level of keyword perception; (b) the keyword perception level has a positive effect on the intension of online keyword searching; and (c) brand familiarity moderates the relationship between the degree of advertisement involvement and the level of keyword perception. When the degree of advertisement involvement is low, brand familiarity does not have a significant impact on the relationship between advertisement involvement and keyword perception. Nonetheless, when the degree of advertisement involvement is high, brand familiarity significantly affects the relationship between advertisement involvement and keyword perception. People having higher brand familiarity are more likely to ignore hints of specific keywords in advertisement. The results of this study can not only facilitate the progress of keyword marketing research but also assist business to implement keyword marketing strategies properly.

ABSTRACT This study was designed to explore factors related to search decision and methods of employed workers. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 collected by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, respondents from the 1996 cohort were analyzed by applying logistic regression method. The findings are summarized as follows: 1. Employed workers who were union members, did not have life insurance, received training on the job, had more than one job, worked part-time or whose supervisors were male were more likely to conduct on-the-job search. 2. Sales workers were more likely to conduct on-the-job search than service workers. Employed workers with job tenure less than five years were more likely to conduct on-the-job search than those with more than five years. Employed with hourly wages higher than $15.01 were more likely to conduct on-the-job search than those with lower than $10. 3. Employed workers with higher educational background or who worked for firms larger than 500 were more likely to conduct on-the-job search through employment agencies or by sending out resumes. 4. Employed workers worked in manufacture industry were more likely to conduct on-the-job search through employment agency than others. Compared with manufacture industry, workers employed in agriculture, commerce, personal services industries were more likely to contact employers directly to search for jobs. 5. Employed workers whose job tenure was less than one year were more likely to search job through employment agencies or from advertisement than those with more than five years. Employed workers with hourly wages lower than $15 were more likely to contact employers directly to search for jobs than higher $15.

Since December 2004, Google has undertook an unprecedented, large-scale book digitized project—Google Book Search (GBS), Google has entered into partnerships with the world’s largest and most prestigious libraries with the goal of scanning and digitizing their collections, and offered a convenient online book search services. Even though GBS was conducive to communications, cultural developments and it would benefit the public information-searching rights, there was liability for copyright infringement due to Google's scanning of millions of copyrighted books without the authorization. In 2005, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) brought copyright infringement lawsuits against Google, claiming that Google’s use was a “plain and brazen violation of copyright law”. After three years of litigation, but before the court could rule on the fair use argument, in October 2008, Google and the plaintiffs announced the settlement agreement, but because the settlement would allow Google to use and sell access to millions of copyrighted books, which raised doubts and difficult questions for discussion. In response to objections from publishers, rightholders and the U.S. Department of Justice, Google produced the Amended Settlement Agreement (ASA) in 2009. On March 22, 2011, the district court rejected the ASA because Google was likely to infringe Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, antitrust and copyright laws. In spite of the suspected infringement of copyright, this project, GBS, would promote the progress of science and the useful arts as well as narrow the knowledge gap between rural and urban areas. By examining the feasibility of the fair use, DMCA and the system of extended collective licensing in GBS case, this article trying to establish what is permissible with respect to book search projects, and suggesting a possible legislative solution to the orphan works problem.

Search is a traditional problem in computer science. There are a lot of applications for search problem. There are also many variants of search problem. One variant is called fuzzy search problem. In fuzzy search, it supports fault tolerance. This capability has many applications, e.g., network, bibliographic search, computational biology, and so on. Most fuzzy searches concentrate on the number of mismatches. In this thesis, we propose the concept of proportional fuzzy search. In the search the fault tolerance is a proportional value with respect to the size of query set. We propose a bit-mapping method for this proportional fuzzy search problem. Comparing with a straightforward method, our experiment shows that the proposed method is promoted.

RFID has been considered as a time- and money saving solution for a wide variety of applications, such as manufacturing and inventory. Plenty of RFID authentication protocol which provides adequate security and privacy can be used for RFID tag searching. However, when the number of tags within a system increase, the overall data collection cost will be increased. Therefore, more efficient RFID tag searching method is needed. In 2008, Ahamed et al. and Tan et al. proposed lightweight and serverless RFID tag searching protocols. These two protocols can search a particular tag efficiently without server’s intervention. However, there are several weaknesses in their protocol. In this paper we propose a secure and serverless RFID tag searching protocol. This protocol can search a particular tag efficiently without server’s intervention. Moreover, the proposed protocol is secure against major security threats.

Search interview is the communication process that intermediaries use the question-answer process to understand users'' information needs. In 1970s, library began to provide information retrieval services, and intermediaries were substituted for users to search information through retrieval systems. In order to clarify the users'' real needs, intermediaries must interview with users to understand what are the users'' real questions. Thus, search interview has become an essential process. A study of intermediary elicitation during search interview can better understand how intermediaries interact with users, and how to make use of their professional knowledge to solve users'' information needs, and it also can provide an important contribution to the development of better interactive IR systems. The research employed observation, discourse analysis, and content analysis to collect and analyze 25 user-intermediary interactions. The results show elicitation behavior of intermediaries is the important phenomenon during search interview. A total of 863 intermediary elicitations were identified within and divided into 10 categories. The elicitation contents of intermediaries included information problem, user background, terms, search strategy, previous search history, procedure question, outputs, IR knowledge, other language purposes, and indiscernible. Intermediary elicitations were primarily focused on eliciting terms and outputs from the users, composing 24.9% of all the intermediaries'' elicitation purposes. The results show intermediaries concern about selection of terms and making relevance judgments from users. The transition sequence from one type of intermediary elicitation to another is also investigated. The main sequences of intermediary elicitations are the transition from outputs to outputs (12.5%) and terms to terms (11.8%). The results show intermediaries tend to ask users strings of some type elicitation at the same time. Furthermore, the research also find individual intermediary ask users the same type elicitation, but occur frequency is different. The research concludes by suggestions for both intermediaries interview skills improvement as well as IR system design.

With the rapid growth of the amount of Web pages and the number of users, the demand for powerful search engines is high. Existing commercial search engines are still fraught with some disadvantages. The ranked list of search result pages returned from a search engine is often long and mixed with some concepts that are relevant to the user’s query but hard to be identified. Web search results are actually lack of a well organization, which require users to pay attention on examining the retrieved pages and identifying the correct ones. Conventional research to dealing with this problem relied on using document/term clustering algorithms to handle search results. However, the clustered results are still lack of comprehensive explanations. In this thesis, we develop a new search result organizing approach which contains some characteristics outperformed from the conventional approaches. First, it extracts important topic terms from search result pages and tries to provide a comprehensive overview for the search result. Second, the extracted topic terms are organized with the manner the user prefers. In fact, users’ preferences were seldom taken into account in previous research. With the proposed approach, it is able to extract important topic terms from Web search result snippets and organizes them with the topic classes defined by users. A series of experiments has been conducted and the obtained results show that the proposed approach can help users effectively browse the concepts embedded in the search result pages and easier to locate relevant pages.

Semantic Search has become an active research of Semantic Web in the recent years. The methodology of classification plays a pretty critical role in search process, because it can disambiguate irrelevant information in the beginning of process period. However, the applications related to Folksonomy suffer from much obstruction. Fortunately, It is possible to utilize an existing semantic technologyoDescription Logic to eliminate the problems resulted from Folksonomy. On the other hand, how to effectively utilize heterogeneous ontologies over the Internet to gain the integrity of domain knowledge is also our research objective. In this thesis a faceted logic layer is abstracted in order to organize existing available ontologies according to the methodology of Faceted Classification while using rules to replace its notation. First of all, the category framework is strengthened by thoroughly control hierarchical or parts-whole relationships between categories. Following that, a faceted logic layer is abstracted according to a series of steps we proposed. The implementation result demonstrated that our approach can facilitate the integration of inconsistent or even heterogeneous ontologies. Additionally, this thesis also generalizes the principles of picking appropriate facets. The developed facet browser completely complies with these principles so that better semantic search result can be obtained.

This paper brings up the Orthogonal Quasi Gradient Search Evolution Strategy Method (OQGS). Instead of generating initial solution randomly in traditional method to solving the optimization problem, OQGS apply method of orthogonal experimental design (OED) and orthogonal clossover for global search to build a better mechanism for the initial solution. The main focal point of evolution is that parents should consider about the environment information around itself before searching the optimization solution. According to gradient vector and historical moving vector of parents judge the best direction and distance of offspring to approach the region of optimization solution. In this way, the whole population can get the information around the optimization solution efficiency and surround the nearby region of the optimization solution quickly by this system. In order to achieve the goal of quickly convergence, this paper uses orthogonal pitch adjustment for local search, to approximate the local optimal solution nearby. With the method of OQGS, we want to precipitate the whole evolutionary speed and improve the searching efficiency of evolution strategies. We execute the proposed algorithm to solve eight test functions include of unimodal and multi-modal. The experimental type including of the experiment of fixing parameters, the experiment of changing parameters, the experiment of changing the bound of the variables randomly, the experiment of changing the number of variables Comparing with Orthogonal Genetic Algorithm (OGA) and Orthogonal Simulated Annealing Algorithm (OSA), we can find that OQGS can quicker slove problems than them and more stable find optimal or close-to-optimal solutions to eight test functions. In all of the performance tables show that OQGS can be presentable outstanding performance and it prove that OQGS has best Overall performance than others.

The Internet has become an indispensable part of daily life , the search engine service is the most commonly used, therefore, a large amount of copyright disputes emerge from the search engine on Internet. Fair use is a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work. To practice the factors of fair use in any particular case is the most controversial issues in the field of copyright law. In Taiwan, the Legislative Yuan passed the amendment of copyright law in 2009, by enacting safe harbor provisions to limit ISP’s liability. ISP take the “notice / take” for users’ infringement by use their services, ISP can obtain disclaimer effect from the lawsuit between copyright owners and internet users, thereby the risk of ISP’s involvement can be reduce. This thesis being with introducing the fair use of search engine on Internet, and discusses the safe harbor provisions in 2009, and introducing the legislation of SOPA. Finally, this thesis will provide few suggestions of the copyright law’s legislation.

Abstract:
This paper examines the effects of serial position, price promotion, user experience and brand familiarity on search advertising in China. Past research on traditional media has hypothesized that TV ads in prime time and print ads in cover pages received more audience's attention than other ads placed in nonprime time spots on TV or other ads placed in inside pages in print media. Recent study finds the "banner blindness" phenomenon in interactive advertising due to user expertness. Past research also indicates that price promotion and brand familiarity have positive effects on consumer behavior. Will these theories also apply to the new media search engine? This study investigates whether higher ranked ads will result in higher click-through rates, whether "banner blindness" phenomenon also exists in search advertising and whether price promotion and brand familiarity lead to higher level of user attention and thus higher click-through rate. First, this paper analyzes advertisements in varied positions within the same context to better understand the effect of advertisement position ranking on consumer behavior, its role in advertising effectiveness, and the implications for interactive advertising and marketing communication. Second, it compares advertisement with price promotion message in ad copy with advertisement without price promotion message at the same ranking position within the same context. Finally, this study explores the relationship between user experience, brand familiarity and click-through rate. Major findings of this study include the following: first, primacy effect, price promotion and brand familiarity can lead to higher level of user attention to search advertisements and thus result in higher click-through rates. Second, user experience has a negative effect on search advertising effectiveness. The more experienced the users are, the less likely they click on search advertisements. Lastly, recency effect is not obtained in search advertising in this study. This study helps us better understand the effects of ad serial position, price promotion, user experience & brand familiarity on search advertising. It adds to our knowledge in search advertising and provides theoretical & practical implications for future research.

This study tries to evaluate the structure and the usability of automatic clustering search engines based on the user’s perspectives. The rapidly increasing amount of Internet resources has made search engines one of the most important tools for searching and accessing Internet resources. The results of major search engines found and presented are based on relevance ranking. They may not be able to effectively and efficiently filter the results since they have brought difficulties in terms of precisely locating what the user is seeking for because of the intimidating amount of the results found and presented. Automatic clustering search engines have offered the user a better option. They provide the user with the function of automatically clustering the categories by topics and may thus increase the effectiveness of searching. This study designs experiments that enabled the user to actually participate in the searching tasks of using automatic clustering search engines. The tasks that this study designs include self-defined tasks by the participants and the tasks that this study assigns. This study observes the participants’ behaviors during the process of using the automatic clustering search engines assigned. It also records the searching process by log to analyze the effectiveness of the search engines selected. Finally, it tries to understand the satisfaction of the user by interviews and evaluation questionnaire after the tasks assigned were completed.. The research tools that this study adopts include the experimental platform, searching tasks, evaluation questionnaire, interviews outline, and log analysis software. The results of this study suggests that the time spent and the efforts made by the participant on using the automatic clustering search engines selected are strongly different. The contexts in which the participant used the automatic clustering search engines are also highly different from using the search engines based on relevance-ranking. The results also showed that the automatic clustering search engines selected help enhance the effectiveness of the searching, narrow the topic scope of the searching, highlight key concepts, and provide diverse thinking for searching. Finally, this study provides suggestion to improve automatic clustering search engines. Various combinations of the clusters that the user frequently uses, personalized hierarchical clusters and self-defined numbers of the searching results presented, human-designed clusters and user’s feedback may be provided to enhance the quality of the clustering based on the user.

VQ is a popular and efficient technology for signal processing and data compression. However, the computation requirement on the full-search algorithm is dramatically large. To overcome this issue, many approaches such as TIE, PDE,and Tree-structured … are employed to reduce the computation. Binary search is a powerful algorithm. It will reduce the search space dramatically. However, the binary search can be worked on the one-dimension space only. The space dimension of VQ is very large for the goal on data compression. In the past, the tree-structure VQ was proposed to eliminate the search space. In this approach, the search space is really down. However, the quality and correction-rate is also down. In this thesis, the new algorithm for binary search on VQ application is proposed. In this approach, the search space is really down. Moreover, the quality is also kept. With comparison to the traditional VQ, the average correction-rate is 99.6% and the 57% of search space is reduced. These performances is superior than tree-structured VQ.
