Abstract:
Objectives 1) To investigate the sensitivity to change of the Swedish Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngeal Cancer questionnaire (S-SECEL), addressing communication dysfunction in patients treated for laryngeal cancer. 2) To evaluate longitudinal score changes in relation to established and validated quality of life instruments. Methods 100 patients with Tis-T4 laryngeal cancer were included prior to treatment onset. Patients answered 4 questionnaires at 6 occasions during 1 year; the S-SECEL, the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire, the EORTC Head and Neck cancer module, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. In addition, performance status was assessed. Differences within groups were tested with the Wilcoxon paired signed ranks test and between-group analyses were carried out using the Mann-Whitney U test. Magnitude of group differences was analyzed by means of effect sizes. Results S-SECEL was well accepted with a response rate of 76%. Communication dysfunction increased at 1 month, followed by a continuous decrease throughout the year. Changes were statistically significant at most measurement (p < 0.001), demonstrating the sensitivity of the S-SECEL to changes in communication over time. The S-SECEL was more sensitive than EORTC regarding communication dysfunction. Conclusions The questionnaire was responsive to change and showed convergent results when compared to established HRQL questionnaires. As a routine screening instrument, the S-SECEL could be a valuable tool for identifying patients at risk for psychosocial problems, to help plan rehabilitation and in-depth counselling. It is therefore recommended for clinical use in evaluation of communication dysfunction for all patients with laryngeal cancer, irrespective of treatment.

Abstract:
This article deals with the development and assessment of the Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences After Laryngectomy (SECEL), a 35-item scale developed to address the communication needs of patients with laryngectomies. In the initial stages of development of SECEL, 431 patients with laryngectomies participated. Scale development, factor structure, and data reduction are discussed. Statistical analyses revealed three factors representing General, Environment, and Attitude Subscales. The final version of the SECEL was administered to another 102 patients with laryngectomies to determine validity and reliability measurements. The scale provides a useful measure of adjustment related to communication experiences of patients with laryngectomies.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND. Considering the problematic social integration after total laryngectomy, evaluation of communicational aptitudes of patients after the surgical intervention is necessary in order to optimize their vocal rehabilitation process. MATERIAL AND METHODS. A prospective clinical study was conducted on 24 randomly selected patients of the Otolaryngology Clinic of Targu Mures County Emergency Clinical Hospital that underwent total laryngectomy. We adapted and implemented the questionnaire for Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy – SECEL. Three groups of patients were created: the first containing those with voice prosthesis, the second those using electrolarynx and esophageal voice, and the third with no rehabilitation. We used the Kruskal-Wallis test for the statistical analysis of the results. RESULTS. The mean age of the patients included in our study group was 63 years (+/− 7.56 SD). 95.83% of the participants were male. 79.16% were married. The majority (87.50%) of patients were retired. In 75% of cases, 0 to 5 years have passed since the surgery. 75% reported diminished communication after surgery. The test used to determine if significant differences were present between the examined groups showed a p-value of 0.1329 (total scores), p-value of 0.3244 (the first score of SECEL), p-value = 0.6004 (the second score of SECEL) and a p-value of 0.0613 (the third score of SECEL). Given that p was higher than 0.05, the null hypotheses could not be rejected. The patients who underwent rehabilitation by tracheoesophageal prosthesis showed the best results in all tested categories. CONCLUSION. The SECEL questionnaire adapted in Romanian language could be used as a valid screening instrument in order to improve voice rehabilitation, but it needs further testing.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Seckel syndrome has been described as the prototype of the primordial bird-headed type of dwarfism. Since Seckel originally defined the disorder, less than 60 cases have been reported. In addition to the characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism and skeletal defects, abnormalities have been described in the cardiovascular, hematopoietic, endocrine, and central nervous systems. This pleiotropy has implied genetic heterogeneity and prompted reviews of previously reported cases of Seckel syndrome. As a result, the characteristic diagnostic features of Seckel syndrome have been highly debated. Although deletions in chromosome 2q have been described, to date, no genetic defect has been defined. We report three cases of Seckel-like syndrome in siblings from nonconsanguinous Caucasian parents. In addition to the typical Seckel phenotypic features, all three cases were characterized by severe hydrocephalus. We review the literature and propose that there is a spectrum of Seckel conditions that share some common key features, but also demonstrate a wide range of phenotypic features.

Abstract:
Objetivo: adaptar transculturalmente o Self Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy para o português brasileiro.
Introduction: although there are several instruments to measure quality of life in cancer patients, there is a need for a specific one for those who underwent laryngectomy due to laryngeal cancer. Its features are unrivaled and general instruments do not lend themselves to capture the peculiarities of the impact of their treatment on communication, especially after total laryngectomy. Objective: cross-culturally adapt the Self Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy to the Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: 166 patients who underwent total laryngectomy in a university hospital in southern Brazil between January 2000 and November 2013. Of these, 53 were sought and 39 were found and agreed to answer the questionnaire that was translated from English into Portuguese by a professional health care and an English teacher; retranslated into English by a professional healthcare and a professor of Portuguese (who have English as his native language); approved by the researcher who developed the original questionnaire; and then applied to the patients. The analysis of the questionnaires took place in two stages: first, a qualitative analysis of the understanding that patients had of the questions, the applicability of the instrument and its general conditions; the second, a statistical analysis of responses in order to assess its reliability. Results: Patients who answered the survey have an average age of 65.41 years (43-83 years), predominantly male (82.1%). The tracheosofagial speech, common among laryngectomy patients in other countries, is not used by any patient in this study. On the other hand, it is relevant number of patients who did not develop any type of communication after the oral surgery (48.7%). Other media were quoted speech and esophageal speech eletrolaríngea (both 25.6%). Through the weighting factor, we found a tendency to have a lower quality of life among patients who do not speak (r = 0.241). On formal education, 64.1% of patients have primary education or less; 7.7% of high school; 17.9% completed high school; 2.6% technical course; and 7.7% higher education. The first block of the questionnaire - General questions - proved less suitable (r = 0.247); the second - environmental issues - presented a high correction (r = 0.835), although there were problems in 3 items; the third - questions of attitude - showed the highest correlation (r = 0.888). Conclusion: This study has achieved the first step of the validation of the questionnaire into Portuguese - translation, cultural adaptation and preliminary analysis of the results, identifying failures questions. However, there is need for further studies with a larger sample so that it can perform the validation tests. Schooling is a worrying point; feature is the low education of most of the patients, which makes the self-administered questionnaire impractical and difficult to apply.

Abstract:
The present work aims to develop a descriptive study about safety behavior in the cement industry, specifically in SECIL-Outão, which was the host company for this study. Studies of safety behaviors are quite important because they try to find the precedents that influence the psychological system of individuals that induce attitudes. Thus, through the empirical model in study, the different concepts that influence safety behaviors – safety culture and safety climate, experience of workplace accidents, safety motivation, safety knowledge and risk perception – were analyzed. A questionnaire was developed with questions about occupational safety in SECIL-Outão, whose results were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS 20 version. Statistical analysis showed the internal consistency of the predictors and mediators of the empirical model used, by reliability analysis. The measures of reliability provide a Cronbach Alpha between 0,606 and 0,871. Subsequently, in order to validate the 8 work hypothesis, a correlation analysis was done, using the Spearman and Pearson coefficients, and this allowed for the validation of 6 hypotheses and 7 hypotheses, respectively. Relations were validated between: the experience of workplace accidents and the risk perception; safety climate and safety behaviors; safety climate and safety motivation; risk perception and safety behaviors; safety knowledge and safety behaviors; and safety motivation and safety behaviors. Pearson coefficient also validated the relationship between experience of workplace accidents and risk perception.

Abstract:
In this research, we focus our attention on the coopetitive alliance longevity. This question has been analyzed in the alliances approaches, while it is not really addressed in approaches of coopetition. In this research, we argue that the temporal dimension poses a specific question when we focus on a coopetition situation. Coopetition strategy supposes the simultaneity of competition and cooperation. Often, these two forces are decoupled by a sharing of places where they are located, on activities or on the levels they concern (individual, organizational, inter-organizational) without the concept of coopetition being denatured. However, the question of simultaneity remains a fundamental principle of the concept itself of coopetition. However, this simultaneity seems difficult to implement over time. Is it sustainable? We consider the contributions of researchers on the longevity of alliances and on the alliances between competitors then, on the coopetition situations and we try to highlight the factors that can have an effect on the sustainability of coopetitive alliances. In this regard, we argue that the similarities in size, power, management and culture between the partners allow the alliance to extend over time. To answer to our research question, we carry out the in-depth case analysis of the SEVEL alliance, a 50%-50% joint venture between PSA and FIAT that has lasted forty years. In this case, the partners are placed in a situation of cooperation for production and in a situation of competition for the commerce of the models under their own brands. Beyond the exceptional longevity of this alliance, we try to analyze the sustainability of coopetition by precisely locating the moments in which the partners are exactly in competition and cooperation. Our results derived from a rich archive analysis, a content analysis of 22 semi-structured interviews and descriptive statistics from a database of 457 alliances in the global automotive industry. Our interviewees argue that in the automotive industry, companies do not commit to long-term projects and that longevity is explained by the performance of the alliance results. Quantitative analysis shows that, in this sector, many alliances stop early. However, a significant number of alliances happen to exceed the tenth year of life, our longevity measure. Concerning the “symmetry of the partners”, our second objective, the interviews defend the idea that this variable helps the partners to continue their coopetition projects but it is not the only explanatory factor of longevity. Finally, descriptive statistics highlight that the most durable alliances are those in which the partners participate equally in the coopetitive project

Abstract:
The Kantian interpretation of the sublime proposes in its assessment a predominant place to the contemplation of nature. Contemporary interpretations, on the other hand, focus their attention upon the capacity of art as a de-structuralizing element, in order to give an account of a historical development of the arts in the way of the sublime. The present paper holds that, since Martin Seel’s Aesthetics of Appearing, it is possible to link both approaches by means of an existential interpretation of the experience of the sublime that stresses the role of time, and thus recovers the experience of the natural sublime in the absence of a super-sensible foundation.

Abstract:
This paper presents the development of wideband energy harvesting by the parallel connection of multiple piezoelectric oscillators attached to a synchronized electric charge extraction (SECE) interface circuit. It is shown that the electric response is determined by the matrix formulation of generalized Ohm’s law. The impedance matrix is explicitly expressed in terms of the equivalent load impedance and system parameters. In addition, the load impedance is found to be independent of external load, so is harvested power. The framework is subsequently validated numerically by SPICE circuit simulations. Finally, the performance evaluation is carried out with comparisons to other interface circuits, including the standard and synchronized switch harvesting on inductor (SSHI) interfaces. The result demonstrates that the bandwidth of an SECE array system is improved and its harvested power is not less than that based on the use of other interface circuits.
