Abstract:
Objectives 1) To investigate the sensitivity to change of the Swedish Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngeal Cancer questionnaire (S-SECEL), addressing communication dysfunction in patients treated for laryngeal cancer. 2) To evaluate longitudinal score changes in relation to established and validated quality of life instruments. Methods 100 patients with Tis-T4 laryngeal cancer were included prior to treatment onset. Patients answered 4 questionnaires at 6 occasions during 1 year; the S-SECEL, the EORTC Quality of Life Questionnaire, the EORTC Head and Neck cancer module, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. In addition, performance status was assessed. Differences within groups were tested with the Wilcoxon paired signed ranks test and between-group analyses were carried out using the Mann-Whitney U test. Magnitude of group differences was analyzed by means of effect sizes. Results S-SECEL was well accepted with a response rate of 76%. Communication dysfunction increased at 1 month, followed by a continuous decrease throughout the year. Changes were statistically significant at most measurement (p < 0.001), demonstrating the sensitivity of the S-SECEL to changes in communication over time. The S-SECEL was more sensitive than EORTC regarding communication dysfunction. Conclusions The questionnaire was responsive to change and showed convergent results when compared to established HRQL questionnaires. As a routine screening instrument, the S-SECEL could be a valuable tool for identifying patients at risk for psychosocial problems, to help plan rehabilitation and in-depth counselling. It is therefore recommended for clinical use in evaluation of communication dysfunction for all patients with laryngeal cancer, irrespective of treatment.

Abstract:
This article deals with the development and assessment of the Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences After Laryngectomy (SECEL), a 35-item scale developed to address the communication needs of patients with laryngectomies. In the initial stages of development of SECEL, 431 patients with laryngectomies participated. Scale development, factor structure, and data reduction are discussed. Statistical analyses revealed three factors representing General, Environment, and Attitude Subscales. The final version of the SECEL was administered to another 102 patients with laryngectomies to determine validity and reliability measurements. The scale provides a useful measure of adjustment related to communication experiences of patients with laryngectomies.

Abstract:
Abstract BACKGROUND. Considering the problematic social integration after total laryngectomy, evaluation of communicational aptitudes of patients after the surgical intervention is necessary in order to optimize their vocal rehabilitation process. MATERIAL AND METHODS. A prospective clinical study was conducted on 24 randomly selected patients of the Otolaryngology Clinic of Targu Mures County Emergency Clinical Hospital that underwent total laryngectomy. We adapted and implemented the questionnaire for Self-Evaluation of Communication Experiences after Laryngectomy – SECEL. Three groups of patients were created: the first containing those with voice prosthesis, the second those using electrolarynx and esophageal voice, and the third with no rehabilitation. We used the Kruskal-Wallis test for the statistical analysis of the results. RESULTS. The mean age of the patients included in our study group was 63 years (+/− 7.56 SD). 95.83% of the participants were male. 79.16% were married. The majority (87.50%) of patients were retired. In 75% of cases, 0 to 5 years have passed since the surgery. 75% reported diminished communication after surgery. The test used to determine if significant differences were present between the examined groups showed a p-value of 0.1329 (total scores), p-value of 0.3244 (the first score of SECEL), p-value = 0.6004 (the second score of SECEL) and a p-value of 0.0613 (the third score of SECEL). Given that p was higher than 0.05, the null hypotheses could not be rejected. The patients who underwent rehabilitation by tracheoesophageal prosthesis showed the best results in all tested categories. CONCLUSION. The SECEL questionnaire adapted in Romanian language could be used as a valid screening instrument in order to improve voice rehabilitation, but it needs further testing.

Abstract:
Seckel syndrome has been described as the prototype of the primordial bird-headed type of dwarfism. Since Seckel originally defined the disorder, less than 60 cases have been reported. In addition to the characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism and skeletal defects, abnormalities have been described in the cardiovascular, hematopoietic, endocrine, and central nervous systems. This pleiotropy has implied genetic heterogeneity and prompted reviews of previously reported cases of Seckel syndrome. As a result, the characteristic diagnostic features of Seckel syndrome have been highly debated. Although deletions in chromosome 2q have been described, to date, no genetic defect has been defined. We report three cases of Seckel-like syndrome in siblings from nonconsanguinous Caucasian parents. In addition to the typical Seckel phenotypic features, all three cases were characterized by severe hydrocephalus. We review the literature and propose that there is a spectrum of Seckel conditions that share some common key features, but also demonstrate a wide range of phenotypic features.

Abstract:
A kind of Keller Segel chemotaxis model has a wide range of applications, but its coupling relationship is very complex. The commonly used method of constructing the upper and lower solutions is no longer suitable for the model solution, which results in a long time for its analysis. In this paper, we propose a method to analyze the asymptotic behavior and stability of a Keller Segel chemotaxis model. The previous methods of first formally and then rigorously, the asymptotic expansion of these monotone steady states, and then we use this fine information on the spike to prove its local asymptotic stability. Moreover, we obtain the uniqueness of such steady states. The asymptotic behavior of the solution of a Keller Segel chemotaxis model is analyzed, and the asymptotic rate is calculated; According to the limitation of Neumann boundary condition, the complete blow up of chemotaxis model solution and the stability of the initial value of the complete blow up time are studied, and the asymptotic and stability analysis of a kind of Keller Segel chemotaxis model solution is completed. The experimental results show that the proposed method takes less time to solve a kind of Keller Segel chemotaxis model, improves the efficiency of the solution, and the accuracy of the solution is higher.

Abstract:
SecSel, a protected-area prioritization tool, has been developed to help design areas that efficiently protect multiple features, including conservation of biodiversity and use of ecosystem services. The prioritization by SecSel is based on evaluation of the local units of each feature. The evaluation metrics should be quantitative but need not be ratio scale. The minimum requirement of the input data is that they are ordinal. The conservation target is the number of local units with high values of each feature to be protected in the area. SecSel can handle conflicts among features, including conflicts between conservation and utilization of land or specific ecosystem functions. Before the selection procedure, one of a conflicting pair of features in a site is discarded. That decision is based on the dispensability of the local unit to fulfilling the conservation target of each feature. SecSel also considers the cost of including each site in the protected area and the compactness of the area in terms of total boundary length or the distance to the nearest site. To demonstrate the functionality of Secsel, we used it to design land use in an alpine region of northern Japan where conservation of alpine vegetation and its recreational use are important considerations.

AbstractThe rise of political anti-Semitism in Imperial and Weimar Germany met with public opposition initiated primarily by Jews. From various perspectives, jewish journalists and intellectuals investigated the origin of this anti-Semitism, its different manifestations as well as possibilities of its public rejection. Journalist Binjamin W. Segel (1866-1931) hereby focused his efforts on debunking antiSemitic myths, such as the Jewish World Conspiracy, as popularized by the text "The protocols of the Elders of Zion". In his writings, Segel, with an Eastern European background, pays attention to the discrimination of "Ostjuden" (EastEuropean Jews) in particular. Furthermore, Segel deals with questions regarding the origins of anti-Semitism, and the effectiveness of Jewish opposition towards it. The following article outlines his life and discusses his work.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The SecY39(Cs) (cold-sensitive) alteration of Arg357 results in a defect of translocation initiation. As a means to dissect the Sec translocation machinery, we isolated mutations that act as suppressors of the secY39 defect. A specific secE mutation, designated secE105, was thus isolated. This mutation proved to be identical with the prlG2 mutation and to suppress a number of cold-sensitive secY mutations. However, other prlG mutations did not effectively suppress the secY defects. Evidence indicates that the Ser105-to-Pro alteration in the C-terminal transmembrane segment of SecE weakens SecY-SecE association. In vitro analyses showed that the SecE(S105P) alteration preferentially stimulates the initial phase of translocation. It is suggested that the S105P alteration affects the SecYEG channel such that it is more prone to open and to accept the translocation initiation domain of a preprotein molecule.

The Student Evaluation of Clinical Education Environment (SECEE) instrument was developed to provide information about the quality of the student clinical learning environment to assist clinical agencies, nursing faculty, and administers in selecting clinical sites that best promote student learning. The SECEE Version 3 was used in all clinical courses at a large mid-Atlantic university from 2001 to 2005. Data from more than 2,700 inventories were analyzed to assess instrument reliability and validity. Internal consistency reliability based on coefficient alpha was .94, with subscale alphas ranging from .82 to .94. Comparisons by analysis of variance revealed significant differences in student evaluations based on both clinical sites and clinical faculty. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the predetermined three factors (subscales) and subscale item content, except for two items. The SECEE Version 3 demonstrated strong internal consistency reliability and the ability to discriminate between student evaluations of distinct clinical sites and faculty and provided practically useful information to both faculty and agency staff.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Bacterial protein translocation is mediated by translocase, a multisubunit membrane protein complex that consists of a peripheral ATPase SecA and a preprotein-conducting channel with SecY, SecE, and SecG as subunits. Like Escherichia coli SecG, theBacillus subtilis homologue, YvaL, dramatically stimulated the ATP-dependent translocation of precursor PhoB (prePhoB) by theB. subtilis SecA-SecYE complex. To systematically determine the functional exchangeability of translocase subunits, all of the relevant combinations of the E. coli and B. subtilis secY, secE, and secG genes were expressed in E. coli. Hybrid SecYEG complexes were overexpressed at high levels. Since SecY could not be overproduced without SecE, these data indicate a stable interaction between the heterologous SecY and SecE subunits. E. coli SecA, but not B. subtilis SecA, supported efficient ATP-dependent translocation of the E. coli precursor OmpA (proOmpA) into inner membrane vesicles containing the hybrid SecYEG complexes, ifE. coli SecY and either E. coli SecE orE. coli SecG were present. Translocation of B. subtilis prePhoB, on the other hand, showed a strict dependence on the translocase subunit composition and occurred efficiently only with the homologous translocase. In contrast to E. coliSecA, B. subtilis SecA binds the SecYEG complexes only with low affinity. These results suggest that each translocase subunit contributes in an exclusive manner to the specificity and functionality of the complex.

Abstract:
We present partial differential equation (PDE) model hierarchies for the chemotactically driven motion of biological cells. Starting from stochastic differential models, we derive a kinetic formulation of cell motion coupled to diffusion equations for the chemoattractants. We also derive a fluid dynamic (macroscopic) Keller–Segel type chemotaxis model by scaling limit procedures. We review rigorous convergence results and discuss finite-time blow-up of Keller–Segel type systems. Finally, recently developed PDE-models for the motion of leukocytes in the presence of multiple chemoattractants and of the slime mold Dictyostelium Discoideum are reviewed.

Primary microcephaly, Seckel syndrome, and microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II) are disorders exhibiting marked microcephaly, with small brain sizes reflecting reduced neuron production during fetal life. Although primary microcephaly can be caused by mutations in microcephalin (MCPH1), cells from patients with Seckel syndrome and MOPD II harbor mutations in ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3 related (ATR) or pericentrin (PCNT), leading to disturbed ATR signaling. In this study, we show that a lack of MCPH1 or PCNT results in a loss of Chk1 from centrosomes with subsequently deregulated activation of centrosomal cyclin B–Cdk1.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) membrane-anchored type I glycoprotein E2 is an ∼53-kDa immunodominant glycoprotein inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies in the animal host after natural infection or following immunization with live or killed vaccines. The E2 coding region lacking the transmembrane domain was constructed in a soluble secreted form (secE2) and expressed in the medium of a transiently transfected human cell line. The crude conditioned medium containing secE2 can be potentially employed to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay antigen for the diagnosis of BVDV infection or for vaccine purposes.

Abstract:
Seckel syndrome is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth delay, microcephaly with mental retardation, and facial dysmorphisms including micrognathia, a recessed forehead, and a large beaked nose. Occurring in 1 in 10,000 children without sex preference, it is the most common primordial microcephalic osteodysplastic dwarfism and has been associated with a variety of congenital brain malformations and intracranial aneurysms. Moyamoya syndrome is an idiopathic, chronic, progressive cerebrovascular disorder marked by stenosis of the intracranial internal carotid arteries and concurrent development of hypertrophied collateral vessels. These tortuous arterial collaterals appear radiographically as “puffs of smoke,” giving the syndrome its name. In this report, the authors describe the case of a 16-year-old girl with coincident Seckel and moyamoya syndromes. To their knowledge, this is the first reported case of such an association being treated with surgical revascularization. The patient presented with persistent headaches and a 2-year history of progressive hand, arm, and face numbness. Imaging studies revealed multiple completed cerebral infarcts, global ischemic changes, and vascular anatomy consistent with moyamoya syndrome. Bilateral pial synangioses successfully revascularized each hemisphere with resolution of the patient's symptoms. The patient died 1 year later of complications related to treatment of a rapidly progressing intracranial aneurysm. This report documents the first case associating moyamoya and Seckel syndromes. In addition, the report reveals the rapid development of an intracranial aneurysm in a patient with this syndrome. When coupled with previous reports of other types of cerebrovascular disease in patients with Seckel syndrome or other primordial dwarfisms, the authors' findings are important because they suggest that physicians treating patients with dwarfism should consider the diagnosis of moyamoya syndrome when symptoms suggestive of cerebral ischemia are present. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of moyamoya syndrome, including the use of proven surgical revascularization procedures such as pial synangiosis, may significantly improve the long-term outcomes of these patients.

1. The suggestion by Segel & Martin [(1988) J. Theor. Biol. 135, 445-453] that the well-known schematic method for the derivation of rate equations for combined quasi-equilibrium-steady-state models proposed by Cha [(1968) J. Biol. Chem. 243, 820-825] may not be generally applicable was shown to be incorrect. By contrast, Cha's method was shown (a) to yield correct initial-rate equations that are exact and (b) not to require any constraints on the relative magnitudes of rate constants for slow steps outside the quasi-equilibrium segments of the kinetic model, including those suggested by Segel & Martin. 2. Examination of residual King-Altman patterns for the general modifier model of Botts & Morales [(1953) Trans. Faraday Soc. 49, 696-707] revealed the reasons for the erroneous conclusions reached by Segel & Martin. The errors arise from the failure to take account of fluxes in parallel pathways that connect the two isolated groups of enzyme species existing in quasi-equilibrium with the modifier. 3. A similar failure to take explicit account of parallel pathways in a thermodynamic box that delayed proper appreciation of the form of pH-dependence of kcat/Km is briefly discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to present the advantages and limitations of the Secondary Education Center Exam (SECE) conducted in 2017-2018 academic year in the opinions of middle school teachers. The study group of the research was consisted of 47 middle school teachers those who entered lessons the 8th grades as of the data collection period in Mamak district. As research method, semi-structured interview model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. As the data collection tool, structured interview form is applied. The data obtained from the interviews have been analyzed using the method of descriptive analysis. The findings obtained in the research are given below: 1- According to middle school teachers, the advantage of secondary education center exam as regards previous high school admission exams is high distinctiveness and limitation of SECE requires high-level skills. 2- The distinctiveness of successful/unsuccessful students of SECE is high when it comes to yes/no questions. However, it is not qualified to discern from students who is solving problems fast/practical and high level skilled. 3- In SECE, difficulty of skill-based questions is coherent with learning outcomes in secondary education curriculum. Nevertheless, they are not coherent with assessment of high-level behaviors, extent, content intelligibility and schoolbooks. 4- In SECE, assessment of basic skills stated and aimed to improve in secondary education curriculum is adequate. However, the aims in curriculum are not adequate to question high-level skills. 5- According to middle school teachers, student achievement was affected by the students mostly register the closest school to their home and there is no obligation to have an exam.

Abstract:
Abstract The last common ancestor of the Gammaproteobacteria carried an important 40-kb chromosome section encoding 51 proteins of the transcriptional and translational machinery. These genes were organized into eight contiguous operons (rrnB-tufB-secE-rpoBC-str-S10-spc-alpha). Over 2 Gy of evolution, in different lineages, some of the operons became separated by multigene insertions. Surprisingly, in many Enterobacteriaceae, much of the ancient organization is conserved, indicating a strong selective force on the operons to remain colinear. Here, we show for one operon pair, tufB-secE in Salmonella, that an interruption of contiguity significantly reduces growth rate. Our data show that the tufB-secE operons are concatenated by an interoperon terminator–promoter overlap that plays a significant role regulating gene expression. Interrupting operon contiguity interferes with this regulation, reducing cellular fitness. Six operons of the ancestral chromosome section remain contiguous in Salmonella (tufB-secE-rpoBC and S10-spc-alpha) and, strikingly, each of these operon pairs is also connected by an interoperon terminator–promoter overlap. Accordingly, we propose that operon concatenation is an ancient feature that restricts the potential to rearrange bacterial chromosomes and can select for the maintenance of a colinear operon organization over billions of years.

Abstract:
61 Background: Multiparametric MRI (MP-MRI) can visualize prostate tumors. MP-MRI characteristics (extraprostatic extension (ECE), tumor volume, etc.) can be predictive of final pathologic findings such as lymph node (LN) involvement, pathological ECE (pECE), and biochemical recurrence (BCR). These are pivotal in the decision-making process regarding treatment. Tumor contact length (TCL) is defined as the length of cancer in contact with the prostatic capsule. We evaluated the ability of MP-MRI determined TCL in predicting pECE, BCR and LN in patients undergoing radical prostatectomy. Methods: All patients who underwent a 3T MP-MRI at the NCI from 2007 to 2015 were retrospectively classed into no ECE, suspicious ECE (sECE) and frank ECE (fECE) based on MP-MRI findings. sECE was defined as tumor with capsular bulge on MRI while fECE was clear capsular obliteration and tumor extension beyond the prostatic capsule. Demographic data was obtained on patients with fECE and sECE on MP-MRI with the presence of pECE, LN, and BCR status following radical prostatectomy from a single surgeon (PP) experience. Chi-Square and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used to compare proportions and continuous variables respectively. Logistic regression was used to determine the predictive ability of TCL. Statistical significance was defined as p-value ≤0.05. Results: Of all 1,260 patients who underwent MP-MRI, we focused on 146 who had sECE (68) or fECE (78) on MP-MRI. Mean age was 60 years and median prostate specific antigen was 11.7 ng/ml. Logistic regression analysis showed that MP-MRI determined TCL was predictive of ECE (p=0.01), LN status (p=0.0001) on final pathology and BCR (p=0.05) during follow up. Patients with pECE had a longer median MP-MRI TCL (2.8 cm) compared to those without pECE (2.4 cm), p=0.04. When analyzed individually, fECE correlated with pECE (p=0.05) while s ECE did not correlate with pECE (p=0.11). Although, not statistically significant, the median MP-MRI TCL for sECE with pECE was still longer than in sECE with no pECE in the sub-group analysis. Conclusions: Longer TCL on MP-MRI can indicate presence of ECE, LN involvement at final pathology as well as predict BCR on follow up.
