Abstract:
Engels once remarked in a letter to Marx, that it really looks as if old Hegel is directing History as World Spirit from his grave, and with the greatest conscientiousness lets everything spin out twice, once as great tragedy, and the second time as running farce, Caussidiere for Danton, Louis Blanc for Robespierre, Barthelemn for Saint-Just, Flocon for Carnot, and Mondkalb with the top dozen most debt-ridden lieutenants for the little corporal and his roundtable of marshals. Thus, as for the 18th Brumaire—we've been there before.1

One of the activities of the Ministry of National Defense is concern for the quality of education and the number of officers who annually enters the service in military units. These actions are now of greater importance, since the Ministry of National Defense clearly increases the number of Polish soldiers. This is mainly due to the formation of the Territorial Defense Forces and the urgent need to supplement the personnel status in operational units envisaged for cooperation under the so-called reinforcement of the eastern flank. In view of this, the Ministry of National Defense conducts annu

The present study attempts to determine if the retention of police in-service training information is affected by the type of content presented in the training session. A group of mid-level police managers (e.g., mostly lieutenants) attended two in-service training sessions on the same day that were devoted to Personnel Management and Multicultural Police Strategies. The police managers were given three objective tests related to the content of the two training sessions. Through the use of an experimental design the police managers were administered a pre-test immediately before each training

The first part considers the official relief effort following the intervention of the lieutenant governor of Bengal, Sir Richard Temple. Temple’s instructions to local officials were framed in strict free trade terms, their aim being to minimize interference with the market and restrict government spending. Temple sought to justify this response by reference to the situation on the ground, but was badly mistaken as to how far the cyclone-affected areas could recover without government help. The second part examines responses to the cyclone by other groups, including missionaries, landlords, the middle-class public, and the Bengali press.

Abstract:
Neil McLennan looks at the poetry of Ewart Alan Mackintosh – a second lieutenant who won the Military Cross for valorous conduct at Arras and who was later killed at Cambrai in November 1917. Mackintosh, McLennan argues, was a devoted and conscientious leader of men, motivated more by an attachment to Scottish landscape, tradition, and loyalty to his comrades than by a hatred of the enemy. McLennan charts the course of Mackintosh’s post-war legacy, moving from near complete obscurity – through a 2004 biography, a monument at the Saint Hubert Chapel in France, anthologisation, and involvement in national centenary commemorations – towards an increasingly central role in the British Great War literary canon

Abstract:
In 1553, Duke Emanuel Filibert succeeded his father and named René de Challant lieutenant general of his lands. Weeks later, René was captured by the French when they attacked Vercelli, and he spent the next two years trying to arrange for his release. In October 1555, he returned to Issogne and immediately took up diplomatic activity in the service of Emanuel Filibert and the Valle d’Aosta. He arranged for the marriage of his daughter Isabelle to the nephew of the Cardinal-Prince-Bishop of Trent and lost his second wife in 1558. In 1559, he oversaw the return of the western Sabaudian lands to their natural ruler. He married twice more prior to his death in 1565. Historians’ accounts of René’s life are surveyed.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the first British invasion of New York via the historic Lake Champlain, Lake George, and Hudson River route in the autumn of 1776. It starts with General Sir Guy Carleton’s successful defense of Canada and repulse of the American attempt to seize Quebec. The increasingly fraught relationship between Carleton and Lord George Germain is also addressed as is the naval arms race between the Americans and the British. This race delayed Carleton’s offensive south on Lake Champlain more than the celebrated Battle of Valcour Island, and he was forced to abandon the offensive after he reached Crown Point, much to the dismay of his second-in-command, Lieutenant General John Burgoyne. This failed first invasion planted the seeds for a new plan created in part by Burgoyne.

Abstract:
The chapter begins on April 18, 1991, during Operation Provide Comfort commander Lieutenant General John Shalikashvili’s first overflight of the Iraqi-Turkish border. It lays out the scope of this post-Gulf War humanitarian crisis—over 500,000 Kurdish refugees trapped within deadly border mountains—and explains how especially fear of Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks prompted the Kurds to flee Iraq. The chapter’s second half flashes back to Shalikashvili’s first assignment as an officer, in Alaska in 1959–60, to show his exceptional job performance, his struggles with arrogance and ambition, and his incipient development of a leadership style based on the “three pillars of leadership” or “love, character, and professionalism.” It also shows his loneliness and search for belonging—including how, five years since being betrayed by her, Shalikashvili tracks down Blondie and offers a marriage proposal that is rebuffed, further raising the theme of unrequited love.
