Abstract The most famous rule on the speed of subtitles is the six-second rule. In this study we investigate if the six-second rule is too slow for contemporary viewers. We also address the question of whether subtitle processing depends on the speech rate of film dialogues and on viewer’s proficiency in the language of the film soundtrack. With these questions in mind, we tested 53 Polish viewers watching English videos at two different speech rates (slow and fast), subtitled into Polish in accordance with the six-second rule. We examined participants’ reading patterns and comprehension and a

Numerical approximations of definite integrals and related error estimations can be made using Simpson’s rules (inequalities). There are two well-known rules: Simpson’s 13 rule or Simpson’s quadrature formula and Simpson’s 38 rule or Simpson’s second formula. The aim of the present paper is to extend several inequalities that hold for Simpson’s 13 rule to Simpson’s 38 rule. More precisely, we prove a weighted version of Simpson’s second type inequality and some Simpson’s second type inequalities for Lipschitzian, bounded variations, convex functions and the functions that belong to Lq. In Experiment 1 participants received a version of the task with a single test rule or one of two versions of the task with the same original test rule together with a second rule. The probability of q was manipulated in the two-rules conditions by varying the size of the antecedent set in the second rule. The results showed a significant suppression of q card and not-p card selections in the alternative-rule conditions, but no difference as a function of antecedent set size.

AbstractThis paper highlights two aspects of Stanley Hauerwas's thought: philosophical ethics, which consists of second-order methodological claims; and moral theology, which consists of first-order, local, unsystematic moral descriptions. I show how the philosophical ethics relates to the moral theology by proposing a set of rules that constitute a ‘grammar’ of Hauerwas's thought. These rules are asymmetrical in that later rules presuppose earlier rules but earlier rules do not presuppose later rules. Each rule corresponds to texts that Hauerwas recommends and relies upon. Implicit learning is the learning of underlying regularities hidden in the environment without the learner being conscious of what is being learnt. First language acquisition in young children is essentially implicit (Krashen, 1982), but the role of implicit learning in second language acquisition is debatable. Previous research on learning of tonal languages focused on perception and identification of language tones in relatively explicit settings, and showed that tonal language experience may not help with learning a new tonal language in an explicit setting (So & Best, 2010; Wang,

First, we find that the budget formulation process and the political economy behind the adoption and compliance of fiscal rules explain that Panama has a bias to create and sequentially pile up rules, while Costa Rica has a tendency not to comply with them. Second, a retrospective analysis of the 2018 fiscal rules in both nations finds asymmetric effects on the fiscal results. Abstract:
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely used for quantitative analysis of global economic issues. Abstract:
Terrorism in Western nations has changed significantly over the past years, putting security services to the test and prompting necessary adaptations in counter-terrorism strategies. In this context, states may be tempted to resort to more flexible and swiftly implemented tools such as administrative measures. However, this Policy Brief argues that the known risks associated with administrative measures may be magnified today by a combination of factors and pose new challenges.
