Chalmers, James. "How stable is second language aptitude? Effects of second language learning and language analysis training on second language aptitude test scores." Thesis, Griffith University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/376507.

Full text
Abstract:
While second language (L2) aptitude has traditionally been considered a stable individual factor in SLA, more recent research and theory has questioned this assumption (Singleton, 2017). If L2 aptitude is stable, then the implication is that this set of cognitive abilities are genetic in origin and/or limited (Skehan, 1998). On the other hand, if L2 aptitude is not stable and is sensitive to experience, then it suggests that whatever constitutes L2 aptitude can be taught to make initial L2 learning easier and faster. While more recent studies have found that the L2 learning experience itself s

The main purpose of this study was to compare the strategies used by Chinese- speaking students when confronted with familiar versus unfamiliar topics in a multiple-choice format reading comprehension test. The focus was on describing what students do when they are taking reading comprehension tests by asking students to verbalize their thoughts. The strategies were further compared with participants' level of familiarity with different reading topics and their reading scores. The challenge is to construct a stress test that is sufficiently extreme, while it is still plausible. The objective of this work is to study various stress testing methods that can be applied at Second Swedish National Pension Fund (AP2) associated with their prediction of market r

Abstract:
Selecting appropriate normative data for the purpose of evaluating psychometric test scores forms an integral part of the interpretative psychological assessment process. This highlights the well-known problem of utilising measures developed in the United Kingdom (UK), or the United States (US) and accepting their norms unreservedly for the practice on local populations, which questions the tests’ validity and reliability. The current study, which aimed to collect normative indicators on the Bender Gestalt Test (Second Edition), forms part of the continuing effort to develop norms for psycholo

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An allusion in the source text poses a serious problem for a translator. A relevance-theoretic approach would define an “allusion” as the re-use of language from a prior text such that, by calling the prior text to mind, an implied reader is aided in his/her attempt to plausibly reconstruct the alluding author’s meaning. For this to happen, the reader’s “context” in the relevance-theoretic sense must include the source of the borrowed language. To explicate the connection for the reader, however, can thwart the pragmatic ef

Abstract:
Prior studies suggest that raters' familiarity with test-takers' first language (L1) can be a potential source of bias in rating speaking tests. However, there is still no consensus between researchers on how and to what extent that familiarity affects the scores. This study investigates raters' performance and focuses on not only how raters' second language (L2) proficiency level interacts with examinees' L1, but also if raters' teaching experience has any effect on the scores. Learning a language can induce anxiety among students. In addition, students can feel anxious when it comes to being tested on their language skills. Studies of goal attainment among health patients, students, and others have shown that self regulation through the model of Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intentions (MCII) can help participants reach their goals. In the current study, we sought to determine whether MCII could help learners better cope with anxiety when being orally examined in a second language. Specifically, we examined whether practicing MCII would lead to reductions i

A four second eccentric squat test (EST) specific to the sport of alpine skiing was developed and standardized. Eighteen men aged 21-30 with one year resistance training experience participated in this study. The reliability of the EST and various jump tests was calculated and the relationship between EST and SSC performance was examined through the correlation of jump test variables and EST performance. The EST was observed to be highly reliable (ICC 0.99). The kinematic characteristics of the EST were closely related to those of alpine skiing. The reliability of the jump test performance var
