Abstract:
A numerical method based on potential flow theory is developed for simulating transient, second-order interactions of ocean waves with large fixed bodies of arbitrary shape in two and three dimensions. The physical problem is represented by a mathematical model composed of a fluid domain bounded by the body surface, the still water surface, the seabed, and a control surface truncating the infinite fluid region. The nonlinear free surface boundary conditions defined on the instantaneous free surface are expanded about the still water level by a Stokes expansion procedure. The flow potential to

Numerical simulation of propagating waves in unbounded spatial domains is a challenge common to many branches of engineering and applied mathematics. Perfectly matched layers (PML) are a novel technique for simulating the absorption of waves in open domains. The equations modeling the dynamics of phenomena of interest are usually posed as differential equations (or integral equations) which must be solved at every time instant. In many application areas like general relativity, seismology and acoustics, the underlying equations are systems of second order hyperbolic partial differential equati

Although previous studies on structural equation modeling (SEM) have indicated that the second-order latent growth model (SOLGM) is a more appropriate approach to longitudinal intervention effects, its application still requires researchers to collect at least three-wave data (e.g. randomized pretest, posttest, and follow-up design). However, in some circumstances, researchers can only collect two-wave data for resource limitations. With only two-wave data, the SOLGM can not be identified and researchers often choose alternative SEM models to fit two-wave data. Recent studies show that the two

Abstract:
In this thesis I examine the Science Fiction and Fantasy works of Lois McMaster Bujold in the Vorkosigan Series and Chalion Series, in particular the way she reformulates women’s roles and identities in society through the characters presented in these novels. I use the term Speculative Fiction as an umbrella term that encompasses both Science Fiction and Fantasy as modes of speculation, in that they both rely on extrapolation and estrangement as narrative features. My main proposition is that Bujold is an important transitional figure in speculative fiction between second and third wave femin

Abstract:
This thesis presents the development of a new class of high-power, continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) with extended tunability from visible to near-infrared (near-IR). While lasers have been in use for nearly 50 years, it is still difficult to develop laser systems that can cover many regions of the optical spectrum, from ultraviolet (UV) and visible to the near and mid-infrared wavelength range, with potential applications in the fields such as spectroscopy, remote sensing, trace gas detection, and many more. Development of cw OPOs in singly-resonant oscillator (SRO
