Abstract:
Abstract Our purpose in this paper is to present the findings of a study aimed at investigating how second language (L2) student-writers construct their identities as academic authors in tertiary education. We consider the restraints institutionalized text production can place on the constitution of writer identity, and call for pedagogical approaches to writing to take on board our findings to better help students in the process of finding their unique authorial voice. While the specific socio-cultural and institutional contexts within which people write limit possibilities for their self-representation, we argue that student writers should be encouraged to bring their own life histories and sense of the self to their texts. The study follows the notion of writer voice as proposed by Lehman (2018). She proposes categorising writer voice into three main types: individual, collective and depersonalized. As these three aspects of voice are predominantly cued through metadiscourse features we employed a three-dimensional analytic rubric designed by Lehman (2018) in order to identify and analyze the potential of individual voice in the facilitation and enhancement of academic writing in a second language (see Lehman, 2018).

In an cited essay, Hairston (1982) asserts that a revolution is taking place in the teaching of compostition, a revolution she characterizes as involving a basic shift in paradigms with regard to the act of composition. Hairston describes the prevailing view of writing, a view that had its orgins in traditional theories of rhetoric, as one that considers writing a linear process in which writers know what they want to say before they begin to write. The major task of the attends to editing concerns in order to perfect the manuscript. Thus the focus of composition instruction in this paradigm is the product that the writer produces.

This case study investigated the revising patterns and intentions in L1 and L2 of Japanese writers with various writing experiences. Three participants were selected through purposeful sampling to do within-case comparisons. One participant was an experienced writer in both Japanese and English; one was an experienced writer in Japanese, but not in English; the other was an inexperienced writer in both Japanese and English. Using think-aloud protocols, these participants produced two revised essays in Japanese and two revised essays in English. The revised texts, think-aloud protocols, and retrospective interviews were analyzed to identify revision patters and revision intentions. first, it was found that all three writers produced many more revisions in Japanese than in English. Second, it was found that these writers showed similar revising intentions across languages. These findings were interpreted in terms of revision control structure, which is gained through writing experiences.

Abstract:
Abstract During the first 6 months of the school year of 1985, at Brunswick Language Centre, I observed Nasr as he was learning to write in his second language. The most significant change which occurred is that Nasr gained an appreciation of the way in which English written anguage is different from spoken language. That is, rather than merely recording his spoken language, Nasr became a writer in English. The changes manifested themselves not only in the product, namely the texts themselves, but also in the processes by which they were produced. These processes can be both directly observed, as recorded on videotape or in the observational diary, which was kept once weekly, or inferred from the product. The major ways in which the last piece is more “developed” is that Nasr has chosen a more “advanced” genre, and the piece conforms more strictly to one genre, rather than also containing elements of other genres. Nevertheless, the earlier pieces mark important, transitional stages and I have therefore chosen to call these intermediate forms “intertext”. Nasr gains mastery over linking mechanisms more characteristic of written than of spoken language he moves from co-ordination to subordination, and through the use of reference and ellipsis, he gradually eliminates the various forms of redundancy. Acquisition of form and function of the past tense Is regarded as essential for the production of sustained narrative and, as such, can also be viewed as a form of cohesion. In Nasr’s case the changes in the writing behaviour include an increase in pause length and a reduction in the number of pauses, changes in the number and type of revisions made, and differences in the way in which input from the teacher is generated.

Abstract:
There has been much research conducted on second language writing. In addition, there exists a significant amount of studies conducted with African American student writers. However, the fields of Second Language Writing and Composition Studies rarely if ever dovetail in the research literature. The purpose of this article is to argue how English language learners and bidialectal (English as a second dialect) learners share similar learning experiences and how sociocultural theories of English language pedagogy can inform composition theory, specifically as it relates to African American student writers. The study of writer identity provides insights into both bilingual and bidialectal learners’ authorial identity constructions and their experiences in English language learning contexts. Based on these similarities, I argue the need for composition theory to integrate sociocultural theories of second language learning and identity to better address the needs of bidialectal learners.

Abstract:
As members of society, we are necessarily trained in writing activities, at least in creating sentences to good paragraphs. However, there are reasons how to read is not enough, and we are also interested in how to write sentences very well (Zamel, 1987: 257). Writing a good paragraph is a complex process that has been done and not easy for everyone. From four language skills, writing a composition is considered as a subject that is difficult to master. Mastery of writing is not a skill which can be learned in isolation. It means that writing is integrated by the other language skills such as reading, speaking, and listening, (Richard & Rodger (1999:56). The usage of acceptable technique is essential in teaching-learning process because it motivates the students to learn English. Therefore, the writer provides a research question on whether the students have created their composition easily through a peer-to-peer discussion. In this case, the writer needs to observe whether there are different results of composing a paragraph through a peer-to-peer discussion compared with the other groups. The objectives of the study are whether students using the discussion to write a good paragraph gain better scores in English than those who do not. The writer collects the data from the students of the second year. They were asked to write a paragraph based on specific topics provided by a classroom teacher and choose three alternative topics to write quickly. The first process was that the students were trained to write a paragraph in a group. Next, in the final activity, they create a composition. The result of research about making composition through a discussion way is right. They can share each other to correct the mistakes. With the result of the discussion, the students can create the composition better the next day. The research concludes that making composition through a discussion way is one of the solutions to make composition easier for the students. Based on the result of research, the students enjoy writing a paragraph through discussion way.

Abstract:
The hybrid nature of culture that comes up as a result of
postmodern world brings about considerable interaction,
borrowing, and fusion between cultures and communicative genres. In such situation, there is erosion of national boundaries, greater multilingualism, and fluidity in identity; hence a" absolute construct of particular culture is getting blurred. Consequently, the term "native identity" has come to a "blurring spot" in the sense that it will be simply awkward to hold firmly one's native identity when multilingualism has become norm. This hybridand plural character of identity has gone to be considerable as the basis of contrastive texts analysis. The newest way of looking at the contrastive rhetoric is that differences in pragmatic or rhetorical expectations should not be considered as unproficiency or interference for the bi/multilingual writer, rather rhetorical choices opted
by the bi/multilingual writer should be considered as critical/alternate discourse. This article is aimed to look at the pedagogy of shuttling between languages done by multilingual writers as the new orientation in the teaching and learning second language writing.

Abstract:
This paper takes on a heuristic approach (Crowley & Debra, 2004) to the study of Saudi writerly identity. In this critical review paper, the author argues that little work has been carried out to study Saudi English as a second langauge (ESL) writers' identity, for most of the empirical studies approach their writing as substandard writers. Therefore, this paper adds critical insights to the exciting literature about L2 Saudi writers and invite second language (L2) researchers to deconstruct the essentialized view towards peripheral writers. The paper also was guided by the question: how are ESL Saudi writers perceived in the Western educational system? Throughout the paper, the researcher problematizes that most studies about L2 Saudi writers are rife with references to phenomena in these student writings as negative transfers and linguistic errors. Other empirical studies were blinded from Saudi L2 discourse by the minutia of mechanism and look at students' writings as illegitimate. However, studies like Canagarajah’s (2013) and Saba’s (2013) can forward the conversation into a deeper understanding of these students’ writing identities and how they perceive themselves as writers and knowledge constructors. The article briefly explores the current definition of identity and how it is related to second language writing, followed by an explanation of Ivanić’s framework of writer identity. Then, the paper reviews previous research on how ESL Arab students negotiate and construct their written identities in Western educational settings. Finally, the author proposes directions for future empirical research and promising windows for studying the identity of Saudi ESL writers.

Abstract:
Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is a Russian great writer, thinker, philosopher and publicist. His skill influenced the literature and culture of the whole world, including Polish. This article discusses the role of the author of Crime and Punishment in Polish literature and culture, including the presence of his works in Polish theater and cinema. Many Polish writers, who studied the artistic skills of Dostoevsky, were attracted by the composition and structure of his novel, introspection and reflection of characters showing interpersonal relationships, a “borderline” state of mind. Even more important than the recognition by Polish writers of the artistry of Dostoevsky is the influence on them of his philosophical concepts, especially the concept of personality. The specificity of Dostoevsky’s technique is also related to the fact that the Russian writer created negative stereotypes of Poles. It must be remembered that the reception of Dostoevsky in Poland in the first decade after the Second World War was significantly limited. Today, the works of the Russian writer are transferred to theatrical scenes, on the basis of which series, full-length or animated films are shot. There are many editions of his short stories and novels in bookstores, often translated again.

Abstract:
The research is devoted to the analysis of the ‘narrative about the author’ in interviews with contemporary writers. Modern literary process is characterized by reconfiguration and reevaluation of the writerreader- text system. The author’s persona, their direct speech intended for different types of readership are coming to the fore. In interviews, a special ‘narrative about the author’ (self-identification as a writer) is formed. The author of the article comes to a conclusion that writers are faced with the necessity of public self-reflection, self-commenting, i. e. creation of a metatext – a second-order text about one's own creative work; they become self-interpreters, gaining the ability to influence the reader's perception vectors, while shifting from the sphere of the sacred to the sphere of consumption. Text as a communication act ceases to be alienated from the author (the author-text-reader relationship becomes horizontal), the reader perceives the work through the model of personality that the writer has presented to the public. It is necessary to study the author's narrative of self-representation as a system of voluntary or repressive conventions adopted by the author (narrative framework), restrictions imposed by the author on themselves, and ways of their representation, taking into account the problem of verification of this self-representation. The way the ‘narrative about the author’ is arranged is determined by many factors; the description of those can serve as an illustration of the dynamics of modern writers’ views on the essence of literary creativity and the mission of the writer in the time of literary centrality coming to collapse. The study of the ‘narrative about the author’ is relevant in the context of understanding the complexity of determining the main artistic trends of the present time. The research is based on the material of interviews with the writer E. Vodolazkin devoted to his novel Lavr.

Abstract:
This study used qualitative analyses to explore novice ESL writers’ concepts of writers, readers and texts. Metadiscourse studies tabulate frequencies of discourse markers in order to characterise the different ways novices and experts, native-speakers and non-native speakers, construct themselves as writers, engage with their readers, and guide readers through their text. But the picture created by these descriptive statistics lacks many content areas voiced by student writers, including their reliance on visual content, and their emotions. Student writers’ experiences in a world saturated by visual media and marketing views are also factors shaping how they construct their identities as writers, the identities of their projected readers, and how they understand what they are doing when writing text. This study used content and transitivity analyses to assess how Arabic native-speaker novices understand themselves as writers, how they project their readers’ identities, and how they try to engage them. Results show that visuals are indistinct from text, and verbs of seeing are used for reader understanding, in novice writers’ sense of their texts, and how they understand engaging the reader. These novices have a demographically granular assessment of audiences, but aim to please readers with expected content rather than challenge them with academic content, and they downplay important elements of teacher talk, syllabus and second-language (L2) composition instruction, particularly data, research, structure and language.

An approach is depended in the recent years to distinguish any author or writer from other by analyzing his writings or essays. This is done by analyzing the syllables of writings of an author. The syllable is composed of two letters; therefore the words of the writing are fragmented to syllables and extract the most frequency syllables to become trait of that author. The research work depend on analyzed the frequency syllables in two cases, the first, when there is a space between the words, the second, when these spaces are ignored. The results is obtained from a program which scan the syllables in the text file, the performance is best in the first case since the sequence of the selected syllables is higher than the same syllables in the second case.

Summary This article deals with the methodological problems involved in constructing a history of women’s writing. It also presents an outline history of women’s writing in Poland and a review of the state of research in that field. Although women’s writing is an integral part of Polish literature, the author argues that its development is influenced by specific factors which determine the cultural and social condition of women in a given historical time. Consequently, the periodization of women’s writing should take into account criteria and divisions which do not always coincide with the customary reference points of the mainstream literary history. The author also compiles a list of some specific problems of the historiography of Polish women’s writing which require more focused attention on the part of researchers, ie. the phenomenon of the second-rank female writer, subgenres of women’s writing, and the work of female writers from the interwar period, who continued to write in the post-war Poland.

Full text
Abstract:
Egyptian Anglophone writer Waguih Ghali (192? – 1969) has been mostly known for his novel Beer in the Snooker Club (London: Serpent's Tale, 1987) up until his diaries appeared in an online archive dedicated solely to his unpublished papers. A few years ago, the American University in Cairo published Ghali’s diaries into two volumes under the title The Diaries of Waguih Ghali: An Egyptian Writer in the Swinging Sixties (Cairo: The American University in Cairo Press, 2016, 2017). They were released to readers and fans, playing the role of a long awaited second work and also satisfying the general curiosity around his life before his suicide in the late sixties. In May 1964, Ghali started keeping his diary as an attempt to deal with his depression which culminated in his final entry being his suicide note: the trajectory Ghali’s diary takes is that of ‘feeling bad’. Ghali struggles with bouts of depression and although is unable to write more fiction, continues to write about his almost daily battle with mental illness in the practice of keeping the diary. His diaries reveal various emotions that stem out of his depression: sadness, disgust, anger, loneliness, and heartbreak. This paper will trace the affective outpourings of Ghali’s depression within the genre structure of the diary taking into consideration that his diary is not only a diary of depression but also of exile. The paper will attempt to understand how exile as a state of being affects Ghali’s emotional state. Moreover, by connecting how Ghali writes about ‘feeling bad’ in the form of a diary, the paper questions the relationship between his practice as a diarist to his display of such feelings.

Abstract Most second-century Christians were likely to experience challenges, both internal and external, to the new way of life, belief and worship that they had adopted. With the Apology of Justin Martyr and the Legatio of Athenagoras we encounter responses to the common accusations and an exposition of those aspects of life and belief which the writers considered it important to present to ally and opponent alike. These works deal with similar issues, but from rather different perspectives, and here we attempt to draw out some of the ways in which each writer presented his case, and assess their significance and effectiveness.

The lecture and assignment methods were carried out during the training from 24 February to 09 March 2020. The results of the service were presented that writing scientific papers, writers must understand the stages of work; first, make ideas in thought. This idea emerged from the reference book, as well as the results of discussions with colleagues. Second, the writer must express his ideas in narrative form (writing). The work process between stages one and two varies greatly for each author. This matter is influenced by experience and habits. However, the second process has an integrated and systemic stage, so that it can provide clarity on the subject of scientific writing for the writer. The next activity is expected to focus on what social themes are relevant to be written in the form of scientific papers.

Writing is a skill, which demands that students plan and organize their imagination clearly and in sequential order to fulfill the essence of writing which is communicative. Teaching the writing skill is more difficult than teaching and practicing other language skills because of its generative tendency. It is an extremely complex cognitive activity in which the writer is required to demonstrate the control of a number of variables simultaneously and intelligently to achieve the communicative goal. By implication, it means the writer must plan the content, format, sentence structure, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling and formation of ideas. Successful writing is an end product of intelligent reasoning and good planning.

It is from the complexity platform above that one can rightly view the audrous task of students of English as a Second Language (ESL) extraction. The interference from the First Language (FL) or Mother Tongue (MT) is inevitable at this trying stage. Interaction goes on globally and there is the need to be able to interact verbally and in the written form acceptably. The approach offers in the Cognitive Mentalist submission is the focus of this paper. Abstract:
Writing skills are needed across all courses, across all discipline research papers, projects, reports, assignments. However, many claimed they have “writers’ block” which hinders them from writing as often as they hoped, or as much as they wished. Although many may think writing block stems from a writer who only lacks content. However, more often than not, writing block is caused of writers’ fear of writing. The writer becomes so overwhelmed by the fear of writing that he/she is paralyzed with fear. Fear in writing is a learned behaviour that will influence the writer’s behaviour towards writing-related environment. Past studies have shown that one way for people to not live in fear is to avoid the action totally. This study is done to investigate the facets of avoidance behaviour to avoid writing-related activities. 108 participants responded to a survey. The instrument used is a survey with 6 sections. The first section is demographic profile. The second section is on cognitive avoidance and it has 4 items. The third section is somatic avoidance with 7 items. The fourth section is protective avoidance and has (i) problems with punctuation (9 items), (ii) problems with language use (7 items), and (iii) problems with writing skills (9 items). The fifth section is situation with 5 items and the last section is substitution with 7 items Findings reveal that when writer fear writing, they may resort to avoidance behaviour such as cognitive, somatic, protective, situational and also substitution avoidance.

Abstract:
Abstract Janet Mock—writer, activist, television host, director—has become a leading voice for transgender women of color in the twenty-first century. In 2014, Mock published Redefining Realness with Atria Books. Shortly thereafter, Mock became a New York Times best-selling writer and garnered the critical praise of folks such as bell hooks, Melissa Harris-Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and more. Hooks described Mock’s work as a guide to transformation, Harris-Perry situated her work in the deep tradition of life writing in African American literature, and Winfrey called her a “fearless new voice” who “changed my way of thinking.” In 2017, Mock published her second memoir, Surpassing Certainty, marking a rare moment in which a transgender woman-of-color writer released a second book with a major publisher. During our conversation at Babbalucci, a restaurant in her beloved Harlem neighborhood, Mock reflected on her first book in light of the writing of her sophomore release. She also shared insight about writing love and dating storylines for transgender women of color, an amplified focus in Surpassing Certainty, and she discussed the dynamics of disclosure in narrative and life. Further, she ruminated about what constitutes home for her and how to write about space and place. Such remarks importantly center her Hawaiian roots and her multi-ethnic identity. Finally, Mock offered her most recent thoughts on being a trans woman of color in the public sphere in a turbulent national climate—particularly for folks on the margins of the already-marginalized.

Abstract:
This article analyzes interactions among the early twentieth-century Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese literary worlds. The author first develops a general conceptualization of intra–East Asian literary contact nebulae. These were the ambiguous spaces, both physical and creative, where imperial Japanese, semicolonial Chinese, and colonial Korean and Taiwanese writers interacted with one another and transculturated (i.e., discussed, translated, and intertextualized) one another's writings. Among the most intriguing literary contact nebulae are Chinese and Korean transculturations of censored Japanese literature. The second half of the article explores two key examples of this phenomenon: colonial Korean translation and intertextualization of the Japanese writer Nakano Shigeharu's poem “Ame no furu Shinagawa eki” (Shinagawa Station in the Rain, February 1929) and wartime Chinese translation and intertextualization of the Japanese writer Ishikawa Tatsuzō's novella “Ikiteiru heitai” (Living Soldiers, March 1938). These transculturations embody multifaceted amalgams of (semi)colonial literary collaboration, acquiescence, and resistance vis-à-vis metropolitan imperial and cultural authority.

Abstract This article investigates how Taiwanese American writers represent Taiwan history in literary works with a focus on a female perspective as a way of reconstructing identities and repositioning Taiwan on a global scale. With the case studies of the first-generation Taiwanese American writer Joyce Huang’s Yangmei Trilogy (2001–2005) and the multiethnic second-generation writer Shawna Yang Ryan’s Green Island (2016), this article employs Shu-mei Shih’s “relational comparison” as a theoretical approach to analyze generational differences and transformative identities in these novels and argues that these authors’ writings on Taiwan history in the United States embody the transnational connection between the homeland and the host state. More importantly, by adopting similar historical materials and distinct narrative strategies, these novels demonstrate the involved multifaceted political meanings and cultural interventions by situating Taiwan in the related national, transnational and world histories and in doing so connect and compare Taiwan with other parts of the world.

Abstract:
Fluent readers are characterized by their ability in comprehending reading text flawlessly. They need no such a significant delay to process either word recognition or world knowledge while putting some efforts to get the gist of the text. Thus, their reading speed would increase by the time their word recognition skill improved. This also implicates their reading comprehension as well since they are skillful enough to relate what they know about the text with the text itself. However, that condition happened differently to students who joined Reading for General Purposes class. Some students who read in normal speed varied in their reading comprehension score. Students’ reading speed level must have yielded the approximate score to their speed level, moderate score. This occurrence leaded the writer to investigate if there is any correlation between students’ reading speed level and their reading comprehension. Thus, correlational research design was deployed in this research. Sample of this research were students who joined writer’s Reading for General Purposes class, 74 students. The data were collected by using tests, reading speed test and reading comprehension. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed them by using Spearman’s Rank Order Correlation to test the hypothesis. Since the result of Spearman’s rho value Sig. = .608 > α = .05, alternative hypothesis was not accepted which meant that there was no correlation between students’ reading speed level and their reading comprehension.

Her novels track the dilemmas that these characters face in trying to live according their moral theories and commitments. I consider the case for treating fiction as philosophically valuable, and argue that Charrière's novels fall into the category of philosophically valuable fiction.

Abstract:
The article tackles a vital problem of nowadays. The topicality of the title selected is determined by insufficient literary research of the motive of Ukrainian state formation highlighted in the writers’ works. A special role among the writers who raised the issues of state formation is played by R. Ivanychuk. This is a prominent writer of nowadays, the author of many collections of stories and short stories as well as the author of more than twenty historical novels. All the novels by Ivanychuk are united into one cycle and are based on the same material, the common historical events and characters as well as symbols and cross-cutting themes and ideas. The most significant of those ideas is the one of love for the homeland and for the nation as the sense of human existence. His book «Bless the Lord…» was published in 1993. In the foreword MP of Ukraine R. Ivanychuk as a writer and politician traces the history of his generation and the formation of its national consciousness after proclaiming the independence of Ukraine. The author shows how through parliamentary battles and party wars the brand new literary process emerged with a focus on literary and political leaders he knew well enough. This peculiar chronicle is based on a great number of memories of the difficult events associated with the creation of independent Ukraine after the collapse of the empire – the USSR. The author presents his memories as an integral part of the Ukrainian literature. From a writer’s point of view, a master of words cannot get rid of these age-old questions if he is truly hurt by the fate of the nation. The work is composed of two parts: «Literature and state» and «State and literature». This is a peculiar view of the problem – an artist and the power, the problem of the past and the future of our nation. In the writer’s view, the master of the word cannot evade from these everlasting questions if he or she really cares for the nation’s fate. Focusing on the high purpose of the writer, R. Ivanychuk in the second part of his memoirs mentions the difficult relationship between the writers and the authorities. This work evidences the main assignment of writing – building a new democratic Ukraine. Both in the analyzed work and in his numerous speeches, the writer emphasized that literature is a temple. And in this temple there should be no place for artisans from literature, who carry dirt into the spiritual life, disdain for man, for his future. The second part of the book abounds in the writer’s speculations about the role of literature in society and in requirements as per its high artistry level. The writer thinks that literature is a temple that cannot give any room for bunglers from literature who bring garbage to their works as well as disrespect for the human being and for his / her future.

Abstract:
Summary This article examines the relationship between literary practice and literary criticism in Polish late Neoclassicism in the work of Euzebiusz Słowacki, who combined the roles of writer and critic in a way not untypical at that time. Born in 1773, he made his reputation as a playwright, literary critic, poet and translator, and in 1811 became Professor of Poetry and Elocution at the University of Wilno. First, the article sets out to prove that both his literary work and his criticism are greatly indebted to the late eighteenth-century doctrine of taste, of which he wrote at length himself. The second part is concerned with a comparison of his theoretical reflections about tragedy and his own tragedies. The analysis of their form shows that Euzebiusz Słowacki not only strove to scale the ultimate tragic heights but also to create a Polish version of the neoclassic tragedy. His tragedy follows the best French and ancient models - especially Racine (whom he probably translated into Polish) - but also questions them in a way which shows that Słowacki was no mere imitator.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the authors phraseology of Dostoevsky, which characterizes him as an artist, a native speaker of the Russian language of his time and can distinguish him from other authors. Identification and characterization of the authors phraseological units and authors techniques of their creation on the example of the description of phraseological units to talk about the language creative personality and the features of the idiostyle. The systemic feature of the writers idiostyle when describing phraseology is an extraordinary variety in form, semantic shades and references to precedent texts, as well as a special property of the writers language - universality and originality, which allows you to go beyond the time frame of the writers work. The phraseological units introduced by Dostoevsky in the middle and second half of the XIX century entered the Russian language, they are recognizable and somehow present in the language of the XX and XXI centuries. To become stable expressions, it takes time for a more complete mastering of Dostoevskys texts, reproduction and consolidation of phraseological units in the language. Paradoxically, the unique, multidimensional and inimitable idiostyle of the writer can become an obstacle to entering the language. Moving on from century to century accumulate idioms of the language, and therefore peoples memory. The description of Dostoevskys phraseological units makes it possible to compare both different works of one writer and works of different authors in the synchrony and diachrony of the Russian language.
