Full textThe thesis proposes to question the legal proceedings run by the French judiciary in the aftermath of World war two - from 1945 to the mid-1950s - against former Resistance fighters for crimes committed between 1944 and 1 June 1946, the legal date of the cessation of hostilities. The thesis is structured in four main thematic chapters. Going beyond the caesura represented by the end of the Second World War, the thesis examines a little-known aspect of what happened after the end of the war of liberation, involving some of its protagonists. From the beginning, the Resistance represented a complex “memory issue"; this study shows how the trials of resistance fighters fit into the broader framework of the difficult construction of the memory of the war years. Indeed, the trials of resistance fighters have constituted a terrain of political confrontation and have been instrumentalized. Moreover, the thesis fits into the historiographical debate around the category of transitional justice, completing a picture that was limited to the study of purges. It is a new look at the period of transition that allows us to observe, in a complete and complex way, the passage through different forms of justice with continuities and ruptures. In this sense, the study of the trials brings to light a series of dynamics linked not only to the actors directly involved, but also to society in general

Full textThe argument of the present work is that sport is a peripheral and not vital phenomenon in the international political system, but because of its high public visibility it has to be considered both as a part of international relations and a foreign policy tool for governments and diplomacy. The present PhD study aims at inquiring, in a historical-political approach, into the international role of sport in the decade 1943-1953. It will give particular attention to the actors and institutions of the “sporting foreign policy”, to the Italian re-entering into the international sport arena and its soft power; in addition, attention will be drawn to some particular “political crises” that touched the sporting activity and to some “sporting crises” obliging the intervention of the government and diplomacy. The final aim of the study is to understand if and how sport was consciously used as a foreign policy tool, and at what degree of intensity the international activity of the Italian sport was influenced by the development and the balance of power in international politics.

Full textThis research analyses the history of Gioventù Studentesca (GS), a movement born in Milan in 1954 within the context of the Italian Catholic Association (AC). This movement was founded by don Luigi Giussani, assistant of the students of AC in Milan, with the aim of setting up a community presence of Christian students in the schools. The movement had a strong development under the episcopacy of Giovanni Battista Montini, then appointed Pope with the name of Paolo VI, who recognised in GS a possible answer to the secularization process gradually evolving in the Milanese area. This report focues on the evolution of don Giussani’s pedagogical thinking and educational approach. It also highlights the critical relationschip between GS and the national centre of AC from mid-Sixsties up to the definitive exit of GS from AC following the statutes of 1969.

Full textThis research examines how Southern Italy has been represented in the Italian press in the decades following the Second World War. The visual representation of Southern Italy has been analyzed as the outcome of a dispositif at work, in a Foucauldian and Deleuzian sense; the dispositif [apparatus] is formed by the various discourses - literature, science, economics - that have produced a wealth of knowledge on the Southern. Most often, this dispositif is analyzed during some critical moment in Italian history: the Risorgimento, when the South became a “question” ("questione meridionale"); the Fascist period, when Southern Italy was incorporated into the rhetoric of homologation of regime propaganda; or the post-war period, a moment of transition and deep change, upon which this research focuses. This project analyzes a photographic corpus from three sources reflecting the "difference of looks" that "visually" built the South: Italia, a government-produced magazine; Epoca, a popular weekly; and Cinema Nuovo, a monthly film magazine offering Marxist perspectives.

Full textThe subject of the research is the Wilhelm-Lehmbruck-Museum, a work of the architect Manfred Lehmbruck, designed and built between 1957 and 1964. This building, which hosts the artistic production of the renowned sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Manfred's father, is among the first museums built ex novo in the German Federal Republic after WWII. The myth of Wilhelm Lehmbruck, constructed in the course of several years to provide the industrial town of Duisburg with a cultural identity, was boosted in the second post-war period within a more general tendency in the Bonn Republic towards the reevaluation of modern art, which had been labeled as “degenerate” by national-socialism. Finding a new link with the modern art and architecture of the twenties was, at the time, particularly functional for the re-creation of the new and democratic image of the new German state, which sought for legitimation by proclaiming itself as the heir of the glorious Weimar Republic. After years of debate on reconstruction, the architecture of the neues Bauen seemed to be the only possible way in which Germany could present itself to the world, even if the reality of the country was much more complex and betrayed the “double face” of this state after 1945. The numerous dichotomies, that soon peopled the “tabula rasa” which had originated from the ruins of WWII (memory/oblivion, tradition/modernity, continuity/discontinuity with the recent and unlucky past) are reflected in the history and in the particular architecture of the Duisburg Museum, that could be interpreted as a paradigmatic work for the understanding of the new identity of the Federal Republic, an identity that made this state able to rise up after the “year zero”, seeking in the Economic Miracle an instrument of redemption from a shameful past, which had to be silenced, forgotten, left behind.

Full textIn Sicily, the main tool that has characterized the mode of action of the public authorities in the economy has been the direct or indirect holding, that of the region which is proposed as an advocate organization to support the development of industry and later as an entrepreneur subject. The organizational form through which the intervention took the form of regional economy were the corporation to regional participation, the company and the autonomous regional public regional entity. The history of economic development in the post-war Sicilian confirms that the use of the economic instrument of the public powers has been very common in the local as, moreover, also in other regions of Italy. Traces of these, a historical event that we immediately have complex implications that would generate the need to research the way in which political institutions have an impact on the economic dynamics of Sicily after World War II, to the extent known and depth were in fact the key features and Sicilian peculiar paths of economic development remain poorly detailed content of the reports and the links political, institutional and economic relations between center and periphery, in other words that still remains partially unexplored part of the investigation concerning the evolution of the processes of industrialization of Sicily in the second postwar implemented in parallel by the regional authorities and the State through their bodies and instruments. You might be wondering what were the times, methods, obstacles and possible results of planning actions taken by the public authorities in the central and regional perspective of economic development of the territory, the coordination of measures to promote industrial progress is presented in this sense, from the outset, as one of the key challenges for an adequate and substantial economic recovery in less developed areas of Southern Italian.

Full textThe history of the Waldesian Church after World War two is the object of a study on religious minorities in Italy. The Evangelical minorities and their vicissitudes after World War two belong to the wider history of the creation of the Republican State, which historians have been increasingly interested in especially from the nineties onwards. The process of reintegration of the Waldesian Church after the war was complex and troublesome. The final collapse of the Liberal State and the experience of fascism tore down the political and cultural framework where Evangelical Churches had developed. It was soon clear that the rising of the Republican State, characterised by a powerful polarisation between Catholics and communists, would not allow to return to the status quo before fascism. The efforts of the Waldesian Church to elaborate strategies aiming at a juridical, cultural and religious recognition, need to be placed in such a context.

Full textThis thesis studies communist cinema and cinematographic culture through the periodic press of the Italian Communist Party (PCI) published between 1945 and 1960. Applying an historical, sociological and culturological approach to the communist press, this research examines the main post-World War II Communist magazines, and related archival documentation, in order to assess the pervasiveness of film culture in non-specialized press. The five chapters analyse respectively: 1) the advent and development of cinema in the communist press; 2) the presence of cinema in the readers’s columns; 3) the role of communist critics in the broader cultural legitimation processes of cinema; 4) the role of the communist press in scouting and influencing the models of popular stardom; 5) the impact of the iconographic and gossip apparatuses proposed in the magazines’ covers and contents of the periodicals. The last section of the work consists of a database that indicates the file, date, author, title and page of each article, letter or cover relating to cinema in the periodicals analysed.

Full textThe thesis deals with the post-war Italian assisted migration to Belgium (1946-1956) and it is particularly focused on the "political aspects" of the selection of migrant workers and on the "political control" of their activities in the receiving country. Despite the economic origins of this migration flow, my intention was in fact to study all the political issues concerning the management of the phenomenon, with reference both to the two national contexts of departure and arrival, and to international political circumstances, marked by the Cold War. The principal aims of my research were, therefore, to reconsider the interconnection between economic and political factors; to delve into the divergent strategies and political interests of the two countries involved in organising such working exodus; and to examine the real implications of political questions on migrants’ lives. The dissertation is composed of two main parts. In the first part, I have examined the recruitment system implemented in Italy, as well as the selection of candidates carried out by the Belgian Commission and by other Belgian officials at the Migration Centre in Milan. In the second part, instead, I have studied the political control over Italian migrants with respect to associations, social care and services, trade unions and newspapers on the one hand, and on the other hand, I have taken into account police surveillance and expulsion measures related to the Belgian ban on foreigners getting into politics
