Full textThe last twenty years of the 20th century were characterised in Cameroon by an unexpected and unexplained phenomenon : the invasion by supposedly spiritual groups dubbed prayer groups or sects. The ensuing sudden confusion rocked peoples’ habit in a country hitherto dominated by traditional Christian Churches introduced by colonisation, Islam and ancient practices. This raises three questions, which are also three working hypotheses: could the economic crisis be responsible for the phenomenon? Or could the State have encouraged the expansion for reasons of political manipulation? Or better still, is the situation a result of the peoples’ reconsideration of their spiritual bearings in such a deviating environment conducive to despair? A sample of the target population was constituted, surveys initiated and conducted among the sample, a significant mass of information collected from semi-directive interviews around the doctrines taught, the functioning of the groups, the motivations and new lifestyle of followers. But beyond this, it is the numerous unspoken comments, the contradictions observed and the differences noted between the theories and practices, which unveil the hidden face of such groups. With economic revival, their enrolments tend to dwindle, while they tend to shift their efforts towards rural areas. What are the consequences of the sect phenomenon on the Cameroonian society? A comparison of evangelisation of the colonial period and now by the “sect” reveals certain similarities no doubt, but above all it brings out the shortcomings and dangerous nature of sects

Full textTo-day, the "New Religious movements" modify the landscape of beliefs in relation to the known traditional religions. In this esoteric nebula, how does one bring to light the criteria of differentiation with the religious ? An analysis of the language and the texts allows one to understand the sense of their doctrine thanks to comparative study of the texts. Besides, a pragmatic approach enables one to analyse the intra-communal relations and to reveal the signs of sectary divergences. These are characterized by violence in interlocutory relations and by mimetic rivalry. In these coercitive and archaic communities, ritualism and magic thought are significant to the detriment of an ethics of dialogue and personal identity of the subject

Full textOur study relates to the everyday life of the HIV positive cameroonian women in Paris and Yaounde. We wanted to notice if for these women it exists an acculturation and if cultural identities arose in various fields. The aim is a better support of these women. The studied fields are the following: social, family, communal, health, religious. We carried out a field in France at the Lariboisière hospital (Paris), and in Cameroon. Our sample in France consists of 40 HIV positive cameroonian women. An interview was carried out, based on a questionnaire approaching the enumerated fields. A field of observation was carried out in Yaounde in various places which support HIV positive people. These data could be compared with those obtained in France. Each speaker is sole, so it's difficult to generalize. Nevertheless, let us notice the importance of the religion to the everyday life, and the existence of an intrication between the traditional religion and the revealed religions. In the same way, the tradition through medicine and of wichcraft persist. Three mode of interpretation of the disease seem to coexist, each person interviewed is privileging one: medical, religious, witchcraft. The concepts of sin and transgression of interdict seem very present. The rumor and the rejection of the African community are feared. There are a financial link with the family in the country, and for many an emotional one because of children's presence. We propose in a future research to look further into thanks to accounts of life the religious field by developing the image of God

Full textThis thesis analyzes healing practices in the Pentecostal churches in beti’s sociocultural context in Yaoundé, particularly in the true Church of God of Cameroon. These Pentecostal churches have been increasingly multiplying across the country since the end of religious restrictions in 1990. This opening corresponds to the period where small businesses activities exploded, even in the religious field, in a situation of economic collapse. Many persons create their own church, with the pretention to break down witchcraft. In the etiological speeches, dreamlike stories emerge as the narrative form preferred by the actors to account for their situation. Witchcraft aetiology reflects the search for well-being, but, more fundamentally, it cannot be understood outside local theories of the word. Dreams details are interesting material that allows us to analyze these theories as well as stakeholders’ expectations. The thesis is organized in seven chapters. The first concerns theoretical and methodological guidelines (chapter 1). Then comes ethnography of contemporary Beti society based on the historical and symbolic influences of the state administration, of schooling and that of Catholic and Protestant Christianity (chapter 2). Nowadays, the rapid expansion of Pentecostalism breaks down the monopoly of the old churches, particularly that of Catholicism in Yaoundé (chapter 3). The dream seems to be an etiological springboard which makes people move, seeking meaning and healing in the Pentecostal churches (Chapter 4). I analyze dream as an ontological medium driving social action. Its interpretations reflects local theories of the world and social transformations. Dreams interpretations fuels the meaning given to the disease (Chapter 5). The family is at the centre of sorcery problems and a space of the creation and the appropriation of dreams’ meaning. I will then try to understand why women are so vulnerable to all sorts of problems in their families and to demonic possession in the Pentecostal churches (Chapter 6). Finally, I will analyze conversion as a healing condition, the meaning and the concrete fruits of healing (Chapter 7).

Full textThe choices and ethical practices of development are major factors in the effective implementation of the right to drinking water in rural Cameroon. After identifying some benchmarks for humanization of development in this sub-Saharan African country, this thesis highlights the challenges of access to drinking water through a socio-ethical analysis of the experiences of three water projects in the departments of Sanaga Maritime and Mbam Inoubou. It demonstrates that the restoration of the dignity and capacity of local actors is the lever on which action is needed to establish a society of commonality and communion that is favorable to ethical development. Unlike a society that promotes “non-commonality” which emerges from the analysis of field experiments, the one that promotes commonality would be able to respond to precarious situations without depending on the assistance and / or direction of guardians

Full textJustice and forgiveness are like two poles of a dialectic that unites them to the point of making them inseparable. Forgiveness is a free gift that comes from a personal approach while justice is a natural or legal right that every human being is entitled. Indeed, forgiveness is not incompatible with justice. It coexists with justice without interfering. The work of one is supplemented by the contribution of the other. In this regard, there cannot be closure with forgiveness without justice. Likewise, there can be no reconciliation with justice without forgiveness. Thus, forgiveness is the fruit of justice. In fact, forgiveness is an act of love beyond fault that breaks pain and hatred. Forgiveness grows whoever offers it and contributes to the happiness of others. The past is vanquished and transcended. Justice is a safeguard that removes discord and inequality. From this point of view, justice and forgiveness are two interacting virtues that bring moral and spiritual fulfillment to human being. They are at the service of charity
