As of 2010, the global population has transited from rural-based to urban-based settlement patterns. While urbanization poses much pressure to city residents, ‘rural living’ continues to represent more than 40% of the way our global citizens will be living for the coming century. This chapter provides some concluding remarks for Building Bottom-up Health and Disaster Risk Reduction Programmes, highlighting the importance of building bottom-up health and disaster risk reduction programmes in rural Asia that strengthen resilience in rural communities, and how careful planning, coordination, and

It discusses key developments in the heritage field, including the emergence of new political and religious actors; the internal diversification of the state (as reflected also in the types of initiatives different state entities promote); and the forms of privatization promoted by the state in cooperation with international organizations. Writings on women workers in the global economy have generally taken as their starting point the rise in female employment in industries in the light manufacturing for export sector. Another issue covered by the literature on gender and labor is migration, where the racialized as well as gendered nature of employment is thrown into sharp focus. Migration has been a major concern in much of the recent feminist literature on gender and employment is because one of the most significant features of contemporary processes of migration has been the feminization of these flows. This chapter begins the discussion of the bottom portion of the model to show how racism operates on the island. The economic crisis of the 1990s marked the first serious challenge to racial ideology in Cuba, as inequalities increased with significant racial dimensions. Racism and discrimination became much more visible, particularly to nonwhites. This chapter examines what is to be valued in economic evaluation of health care interventions. It starts by reviewing economic theory on resource allocation through the market mechanism and applying this to the health care sector. It then presents the alternative of resource allocation by government intervention and the implications this has for the use of economic evaluation and the measure of benefit. This is followed by a consideration of the welfarist foundation for a measure of health such as the QALY, and finally some non-welfarist arguments for this. The aim of this chapter is to exami

The so-called ‘golden age’ of the Keynesian State was turbulently interrupted by a series of economic shocks in the 1970s. Traditional administrative hierarchies were regarded as too inflexible to adapt to the dynamic political and economic forces unleashed in the global age. Emphasizing private sector values such as timeliness, responsiveness, and cost savings, a new kind of managerialism—New Public Management (NPM)—began to take root in some of the world’s leading public bureaucracies. ‘The New Public Management goes global’ explains that, today, the NPM’s emphasis on customer service, manag

Originating in the 1930s under the corporatist administration of Getúlio Vargas, by the 1960s the strategy had succeeded in transforming the structure of the Brazilian economy, turning it into a major industrial powerhouse. Successful though the strategy initially was in promoting growth and structural change, it nevertheless suffered from inherent flaws, notably its heavy reliance on imported inputs and a failure to produce and export eff

This chapter focuses on cases where the presumption that all Member States are effective in enforcing their law does not hold: when Member States show structural, persistent, and cross-sector ineffectiveness in enforcing their law. Borrowing from literature on international law as well as insights from the rich research on EU compliance, this chapter develops three main points. The first is that, on some occasions, the EU might face a similar challenge with that of international law when dealing with weak states. To describe such cases of structural ineffectiveness, this chapter develops the c
