Computer and Information Science
Ph.D.
The growing concerns in term of the privacy of data stored in public cloud have restrained the widespread adoption of cloud computing. The traditional method to protect the data privacy is to encrypt data before they are sent to public cloud, but heavy computation is always introduced by this approach, especially for the image and video data, which has much more amount of data than text data. Another way is to take advantage of hybrid cloud by separating the sensitive data from non-sensitive data and storing them in trusted private cloud and un-trus

Encryption helps to ensure that information within a session is not compromised. Authentication and access control measures ensure legitimate and appropriate access to information, and prevent inappropriate access to such resources. While encryption, authentication and access control each has its own responsibility in securing a communication session, a combination of these three mechanisms can provide much better protection for information. This thesis addresses encryption, authentication and access control related problems in cloud and distributed environments, since these problems are ver

With the introduction of cloud computing the computation got distributed, virtualized and scalable. This also meant that customers of cloud computing gave away some of their control of their system. That led to a heighten importance of how to handle security in the cloud, for both provider and customer. Since security is such a big subject the focus of this thesis is on confidentiality and privacy, both closely related to how to handle personal data. With the help of a systematic literature review in this thesis, current challenges and possible mitigations are presented in some different areas

As cloud computing continues to gain popularity and its economies of scale continue to improve, stakeholders want to minimise the security risk, protect their data and other resources while maximising the gains of using any cloud resources and its application. It is predicted that by the end of 2017, bulk of spending on any IT infrastructure would be on cloud infrastructure and services as many critical applications – power, medical, finance among others continue to be migrated onto cloud platforms. For these sectors, the security challenges of cloud adoption continue to be of a great concern

The evolution of cloud computing allows the provisioning of IT resources over the Internet and promises many benefits for both - the service users and providers. Despite various benefits offered by cloud based services, many users hesitate in moving their IT systems to the cloud mainly due to many new security problems introduced by cloud environments. In fact, the characteristics of cloud computing become basis of new problems, for example, support of third party hosting introduces loss of user control on the hardware; similarly, on-demand availability requires reliance on complex and possibl

Cloud computing is a new computing paradigm and a breakthrough technology of recent times. Its growing popularity can be attributed to its ability to transform computing to a utility, scalability, and cost effectiveness. More and more services are predicted to be offered in the cloud in the near future.Due to the resource constraints of smartphones, security services in the f

MapReduce, a parallel computing paradigm, has been gaining popularity in recent years as cloud vendors offer MapReduce computation services on their public clouds. However, companies are still reluctant to move their computations to the public cloud due to the following reason: In the current business model, the entire MapReduce cluster is deployed on the public cloud. If the public cloud is not properly protected, the integrity and the confidentiality of MapReduce applications can be compromised by attacks inside or outside of the public cloud.
