Abstract:
This thesis is aimed to calculate the effective permeability tensor and to simulate the fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs. This requires an understanding of the mechanisms of fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs and the detailed properties of individual fractures and matrix porous media. This study has been carried out to address the issues and difficulties faced by previous methods; to establish possible answers to minimise the difficulties; and hence, to improve the efficiency of reservoir simulation through the use of properties of individual fractures. The methodology used in this study combines several mathematical and numerical techniques like the boundary element method, periodic boundary conditions, and the control volume mixed finite element method. This study has contributed to knowledge in the calculation of the effective permeability and simulation of fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs through the development of two algorithms. The first algorithm calculates the effective permeability tensor by use of properties of arbitrary oriented fractures (location, size and orientation). It includes all multi-scaled fractures and considers the appropriate method of analysis for each type of fracture (short, medium and long). In this study a characterisation module which provides the detail information for individual fractures is incorporated. The effective permeability algorithm accounts for fluid flows in the matrix, between the matrix and the fracture and disconnected fractures on effective permeability. It also accounts for the properties of individual fractures in calculation of the effective permeability tensor. The second algorithm simulates flow of single-phase fluid in naturally fractured reservoirs by use of the effective permeability tensor. This algorithm takes full advantage of the control volume discretisation technique and the mixed finite element method in calculation of pressure and fluid flow velocity in each grid block. It accounts for the continuity of flux between the neighbouring blocks and has the advantage of calculation of fluid velocity and pressure, directly from a system of first order equations (Darcy???s law and conservation of mass???s law). The application of the effective permeability tensor in the second algorithm allows us the simulation of fluid flow in naturally fractured reservoirs with large number of multi-scale fractures. The fluid pressure and velocity distributions obtained from this study are important and can considered for further studies in hydraulic fracturing and production optimization of NFRs.

Abstract: The naturally fractured reservoir recovery is a project risk specially in oil-wet or intermediate-wet systems because of the simulations results under waterflood displacement. Fractures are porous medium discontinuities with distinct capillarity and hydraulic conductivity properties that change the reservoir flow behaviour as well the physical mechanisms acting in petroleum recovery. Double-porosity models are generally used in fractured reservoir simulation and have been implemented in the major commercial reservoir simulators. The physical processes acting in petroleum recovery are represented in double-porosity models by matrix-fracture transfer functions. Commercial simulators have their own transfer function implementations, and as a result different kinetics and final recoveries are attained. In this work, a double porosity simulator was built with Kazemi et al. (1976), Sabathier et al. (1998) and Lu et al. (2008) transfer function implementations and their recovery results compared using waterflood displacement in oil-wet or intermediate-wet systems. The results of transfer function comparisons show recovery improvements in oil-wet or intermediate-wet systems under different physical processes combination, particularly in fully discontinuous porous medium when concurrent imbibition takes place, coherent with Firoozabadi (2000) experimental results. Furthermore, the implemented transfer functions, related to a double-porosity model, were compared to double-porosity commercial simulators models, as well a discrete fracture model with refined grid, showing differences between them. Waterflood can be an effective recovery method even in fully discontinuous media for oil-wet or intermediate-wet systems where concurrent imbibition takes place with high enough pressure gradients across the matrix blocks. These results are sensitive to reservoir characterization parameters whose sensitiveness depends on the physical process employed. Naturally fractured reservoir characterization must consider the physical phenomena occurring during recovery and the models used to represent them

Abstract:

Saunders, Brenton Mark. "Fluid-induced charnockite formation post-dating prograde granulite facies anatexis in southern Natal metamorphic province, South Africa." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/10370.

Abstract:
M.Sc. (Geology)
The Proterozoic Namaqua-Natal Mobile Belt of southern Africa represents a succession of high grade metamorphosed igneous and sedimentary rocks rimming the southern and western extents of the Kaapvaal craton. Different petrological processes associated with the onset of granulite facies metamorphism were investigated with the emphasis on the processes on anatexis and migmatitization and the influence of the fluid phase on these processes. The investigation took place in the Margate Terrane of the Southern Natal Metamorphic Province. The Umzimkulu and Louisiana Quarries near Port Shepstone formed the bulk of the field area for this investigation. The Umzimkulu and Louisiana quarries expose two s-type granitic lithologies, namely, the Glenmore Biotite Gneiss (GBGn) and the slightly younger, intrusive Margate Leucogranite (MLGn), both of which have been metamorphosed to granulite facies. Geothermobarometric calculations on the metamorphism of the Margate Terrane all indicate temperatures and pressures of peak metamorphism be 850oC+50oC at +6 kbar. The high grade metamorphic history of the lithologies is recorded by the formation of concordant, lens-shaped, prograde anatectic leucosomes. The leucosomes are concentrically surrounded by biotite selvage zones, followed by melanosomes, and lastly undisturbed host rock material. This investigation revealed that the formation of both the charnockite veins and the prograde leucosomes occurred through processes of anatexis. Field relations suggest that the charnockitic veins formed in situ, and were structurally controlled, which is evident from their linearity. Petrographic and geochemical data provide evidence for melt involvement. This is in strong contrast to theories of charnockite formation ascribed to subsolidus granulite formation by the flushing of host lithologies by a pervasive, carbonic fluid, as has been suggested to have occurred in Southern India. The so-called "incipient charnockites" of Southern India are both morphologically and geochemically similar to the charnockite veins described in the SNMP, suggesting that an anatectic origin may be common to both.

Abstract:

The combination of field-based studies and numerical modeling provides a robust tool for evaluating geologic and geodynamic processes along a convergent margin. Complex and persistent tectonic activity and a novel suite of geophysical observations make the southern Alaskan convergent margin a key region to evaluate these processes through both basin analysis studies and geodynamic modeling. This conceptual approach is utilized to explore the active driving forces of surface deformation throughout southcentral Alaska, as well as the geologic record of regional Cenozoic tectonic processes.

New sedimentologic, chronostratigraphic, and provenance data from strata that crop out within the central Alaska Range document a previously unrecognized stage of Eocene – early Miocene strike-slip basin development along the northern side of the central Denali fault system. This stage was followed by Miocene-Pliocene deformation and exhumation of the central Alaska Range, and basin development and northward sediment transport into the Tanana foreland basin. This portion of the study provides insight into Cenozoic tectonics and basin development in the central Alaska Range.

How transpressional tectonics are manifest in the modern-day, in combination with shallow subduction processes, are not well understood for the southern Alaskan convergent margin. Simulations of the 3-D deformation of this region allow for investigation of the complex relationship between these tectonic processes and surface deformation. Results from this study display the far-field affect that strong plate coupling along the shallowly subducting Yakutat slab has on the surface deformation of southcentral Alaska. Our models also show that partitioning of this convergence is observed along the Denali fault system. Additionally, our results indicate the subducting slab is segmented into separate Pacific, Yakutat and Wrangell slab segments. This variation in slab structure exerts control on the upper plate response to shallow subduction.
