Full textThe Ville-Guay carbonate breccia is a member of the Lauzon Formation (Quebec City area, upper Cambrian). It reaches a maximum thickness of 10 meters and a lateral extension of several kilometers. Until recently, this breccia has been interpreted as having been triggered by tectonic instability which resulted in submarine landslides from the continental slope. However, this interpretation does not explain the field relationships and the heterogeneous composition of the Ville-Guay carbonate breccia. The objective of this research is to document and interpret this lithostratigraphic set contemporary with the spreading of the Iapetus Ocean during the Cambrian. Four main localities (stratotype Ville-Guay, three locations on the Orleans Island) and seven secondary localities were identified, characterized and sampled. A total of 60 meters of stratigraphic sections was measured with a centimeter resolution and 100 samples were collected. 60 of these samples were selected for petrographic analysis (thin sections). The Ville-Guay carbonate breccia is a polymict and polymodal breccia. The clasts are in point contact and reach a maximum diameter of 2 meters (the average diameter is 10 cm). The matrix is argillaceous-silty, calcareous and dolomitic. Some clasts are exposed at the top of the breccia and sometimes covered by a layer of turbidite. There is no significant internal organization of the clasts in the bench. The breccia is formed of a stack of hectometric width channels. The components have highly variable facies: sponge-spicule wackestone, mudstone, bio-lithoclastic packstone, packstone (trilobites), reef debris grainstone and rudstone, calcimicrobes-rich reef boundstone (Renalcis, Epiphyton, Girvanella, Hedstroemia), ooids grainstone, lithoclastic grainstone. These facies can be integrated in a distal-proximal direction and cover all the different stages of a Cambrian carbonate platform model. These elements suggest that the formation of Ville-Guay carbonate breccia is associated with the development of tilted blocks during the opening of the Iapetus Ocean, with oblique listric faults deeply cutting into the platform. The inclination of the blocks created the space to focus the debris flow and enhance clasts mixing. The deposit center of these mass flows migrates over time indicating a widening of the basin.

Full textThe urban tourism is an important factor for the economic and spatial development of many cities in the contemporary world. However, new destinations and new tourists practices emerges continually. The offers of destinations and activities are rapidly growth and diversify, making also much more competitive the urban tourism market. These changes are stimulated, for a big part, by tourist behaviour which is looking for new experiences, more quickly and more personalised choices. The tourist behaviour becomes more complex and less predicable. The Quebec City and area constitute a typical urban destination, combining culture, history and nature activities. Its tourism infrastructures respond to new tourist’s practices and are in accord with the best international standards. But, in despite of good performances the region is confronted with the competition of new destinations as well as with the necessity to have a better equilibration between its different geographical areas and activities practiced. This equilibration will increase it’s competitively in the Canadian market by projecting a more attractive image to its potential tourists and visitors. In the aim to better understand the relation between City and tourism we have analyse the spatiotemporal behaviour of Canadian and international tourists who had visits the region during 1998-2003 period. The data used provide from the Canadian and International Travel Surveys, carried out from 1998 to 2002 by Statistic Canada, as well as from a survey on tourist’s behaviour, carried out in 2003, by Quebec City and Area office of Tourism. The results obtained show that contrary to our starting assumption, the tourism attractivity of the region does not result so much from the triad “history/culture - business/congress - outdoor” but it is especially on “history/culture - shopping - outdoor” activities. The inner city remains always very attractive for the visitors but it is also complemented by a new tourist area, increasingly attended, which is the “green crown” surrounding the city. Lastly, the results obtained make it possible to raise our knowledge in particular with regard to the destination choice and its determinants factors; the importance of intra-regional heterogeneity in the choice of place of stay and the lodging mode; as well as the relation between the tourist’s socio-economic profile and the spatio-temporal factors influencing the choice of activities practised during the stay.

Full textNumerous immigrants of different origins, customs, religions and languages are welcomed every year in theQuebec City area, resulting in a growing diversification of the population. The emergence of prejudices andstereotypes towards them is becoming an increasingly worrisome subject and can have concreterepercussions on their reality. Although the second half of the 20th century was marked by the development ofnumerous policies aimed at facilitating the integration of newcomers and the sensitization and openness of thehost society, daily interactions and discriminatory public expressions relating to hateful gestures and words arestill very present in this 21st century Quebec. Although the establishment of cultural mediation spaces inintercultural contexts can lead to greater cultural sensitivity, little research has been done on the effects ofinteractions on the mutual perceptions of natives and immigrants. Considering these different findings, theobjective of this study is to explore how prejudices evolve within an intercultural group experience. Therefore, this research questions how the interactional dynamics within the group can positively transform perceptions ofeach other. From the perspective of symbolic interactionism and social representation theory, this qualitativeresearch is based on the use of MICAM, a model based on mutual accompaniment, cooperation andintercultural mediation, offering a space for interactive exchange, sharing and reflection. Data was collectedfrom five native Quebecers and five immigrant Quebecers, participating in seven group workshops (MICAM)and two semi-directed qualitative interviews (pre- and post-group). The results collected show that this methodoffers sustained contact between individuals, and that listening, testimonials, transmission of information andself-reflection contribute to greater mutual recognition and the development of positive attitudes among thenative-born towards immigrants who interact in the group. These findings demonstrate the relevance ofoffering spaces for cultural mediation in intercultural contexts in order to improve interactions betweennewcomers and members of the host society

Full textIn Quebec, the retention rate 5 years after entering practice is 25% lower for foreign trained nurses than it is for nurses that completed their studies locally (OIIQ, 2017a). The integration of foreign trained nurses into the health system helps to maintain a sufficient workforce and facilitate accessibility to health care for people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds (Pearson et al., 2007; RNAO, 2007). Based on the Transition Theory of Meleis (2010), our qualitative study inspired by a phenomenology approach aimed at understanding the experience of professional transition as lived by foreign trained nurses in Quebec City. The data, collected for 6 participants was via semi-structured interview, has been analysed with theme identification (Pierre Paillé & Mucchielli, 2012). Three major themes around the experience of internationally educated nurses were found: living different transitions at the same time, experimenting a different practice and realising the contrast between one’s expectations and the reality. Then, conditions influencing transition emerged from the data: using inner resources and strengths to adapt, the influence of the work environment and being different. Finally, two last themes emerged for the analysis concerning the evaluation of the integration made by the nurse herself and an feeling of accomplishment. In accordance with our results and the literature, we conclude this study suggesting different
