The Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, is an actively spreading ocean basin, part of the system of spreading axes and transform faults extending from the East Pacific Rise to the San Andreas fault. <p> Two industry acquired diatomite cores (Sisquoc Formation) from the Orcutt (Newlove 76-RD1) and Casmalia Hills (Stokes A-30804) oil fields were analyzed by core descriptions, laboratory analysis (XRD and SEM), and gamma ray logs. Based on these data, five distinct lithofacies, nine sedimentary features and compositional trends of both cores were established. Newlove 76-RD1 and Stokes A-30804 record an upward-shallowing succession at different depositional positions on the Pliocene paleo-slope of the Santa Maria basin. An estimated 35,000 km3 of freshwater, 4 * 10 6 tonnes of dissolved solids and 18.6 * 106 tonnes of suspended sediment are delivered annually. The global delivery of fluvial water and sediment, both suspended and dissolved, is dominated by Southeast Asia, due to the unique climatic, geologic and geomorphic character of the rivers in this region. ABSTRACT This field trip explores the geology and mining history of the Bodie Hills with a focus on the Bodie and Aurora mining districts. The field trip starts and ends in Bridgeport, California. Our first geologic stop is at Travertine Hot Springs, which provides an analogy for the style of mineralization observed in the Bodie and Aurora districts.
