Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Weeds are a major limitation to agricultural and horticultural production and the main method of control is the use of herbicides. In addition to the resulting chemical pollution of the environment, the wide spread and continues use of herbicides have resulted in many weeds developing resistance to commonly used herbicides. This study investigated the potential of using green manures as a cultural method of control of weed invasion in agricultural fields. Frugivorous insects, specialised herbivores that consume fruit and seeds, are considered detrimental to host plant fitness. Their direct link to genetic fitness via consumption of plant reproductive tissue, and their negative socioeconomic association with agriculture exacerbates their harmful status. However, empirical testing of insect frugivore effects on host plants, and ecological research on the contribution of insect frugivores to multitrophic frugivory systems, is lacking. Samimi, Alireza. "Study of Narrow-Band Spectral Characteristics of Stimulated Electromagnetic Emission (SEE) During Second Electron Gyro-Harmonic Heating." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/51833.

Full text
Abstract:
Stimulated Electromagnetic Emissions SEEs may provide important diagnostic information about space plasma composition, energetics, and dynamics during active experiments in which ground-based high powered radio waves are transmitted into the ionosphere. The nonlinear plasma processes producing this secondary radiation are not well understood particularly for some recent observations where the transmitter (pump) frequency is near the second harmonic of the electron gyro-frequency. New, more comprehensive, experimental observations of spectral features within 1kHz of the pump wave frequency are

In the first part of this thesis, we perform a detailed analysis of lepton flavour violation (LFV) within minimal see-saw type extensions of the Standard Model (SM), which give a viable mechanism of neutrino mass generation and provide new particle content at the electroweak scale. We focus, mainly, on predictions and constraints set on each scenario from muon and tau decays ($\mu\to e \gamma$, $\mu\to 3e$, $\tau\to (\mu,e) \gamma$ and $\tau\to 3\mu$) and $\mu-e$ conversion in the nuclei. In particular, we show that in some regions of the parameters space of type I and type II see-saw mo

Background: There is evidence to show that delays in breast cancer management are detrimental to patient outcome. The aim of this study was to determine time trends and causes of delay in a newly established diagnostic breast clinic based at a district hospital in South Africa. Method: All patients who presented to Mitchells Plain District Hospital Breast Clinic from January to December 2015 and had a diagnosis of breast cancer were included in this study. Stimulated electromagnetic emission (SEE) produced by interactions of high-power radio waves with the Earth's ionosphere is currently a topic of significant interest in ionospheric modification physics. SEE is believed to be produced by nonlinear wave-wave interactions involving the electromagnetic and electrostatic plasma waves in the altitude region where the pump wave frequency is near the upper hybrid resonance frequency. The most prominent upshifted feature in the SEE spectrum is the broad upshifted maximum (BUM). In this study, the instability processes thought to be responsible to the B
