Gelfand, Alan, and Sujit K. Sahu. Models for demography of plant populations. Edited by Anthony O'Hagan and Mike West. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198703174.013.17.

Full text
Abstract:
This article discusses the use of Bayesian analysis and methods to analyse the demography of plant populations, and more specifically to estimate the demographic rates of trees and how they respond to environmental variation. It examines data from individual (tree) measurements over an eighteen-year period, including diameter, crown area, maturation status, and survival, and from seed traps, which provide indirect information on fecundity. The multiple data sets are synthesized with a process model where each individual is represented by a multivariate state-space submodel for both continuous (fecundity potential, growth rate, mortality risk, maturation probability) and discrete states (maturation status). The results from plant population demography analysis demonstrate the utility of hierarchical modelling as a mechanism for the synthesis of complex information and interactions.

Arthur, Mary E., ed. Anesthesiology CA-1 Pocket Survival Guide. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190885885.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a concise step-by-step ready reference manual which will help interns transition smoothly to life in the operating room (OR) as anesthesiology residents within the first few months. This survival guide will flatten the learning curve and improve the comfort level of trainees entering the OR for the first time. This Anesthesiology CA-1 Pocket Survival Guide, highlights information to seek out during the orientation period and lays out what to expect in the first clinical anesthesia year. It provides residents with easy-to-follow instructions for such common tasks as patient evaluation and pre-anesthesia care, and suggests how to obtain and organize a patient’s preoperative information to present to the attending anesthesiologist. The handbook also guides residents and trainees through the perioperative period and addresses crisis management as well as post-anesthesia care. The fundamentals of anesthesiology practice as well as specialty practice situations such as providing anesthesia in remote locations are introduced to the beginning anesthesiology resident. Time management and preparation for the anesthesiology BASIC examination and suggestions on how to strike a healthy work- life balance to avoid burn out early on in training are all laid out. The concept of continuous quality improvement focusing on improving the provision of care from one episode to the next is introduced to the learner. This book provides the foundation for a sound beginning in anesthesiology training.

Palmer, R. R. The Survival of the Revolution in France. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691161280.003.0019.

Abstract:
This chapter details events in 1973, when the issue for France and the world was whether revolution or counter-revolution should prevail. In every country where the government was at war with the French Republic in 1793—in Britain and Ireland, in the United Provinces and in Belgium restored to the Emperor, in the Austrian Monarchy, the small German states and the Prussian kingdom, in the Italian kingdom of Sardinia—there were groups of people whose sympathies lay in varying degree with the declared enemy. Wherever the French Revolution had been heard of there were men who wished it not to fail. Their concern was not only for France but for the future of some kind of democratization in their own countries. For those, on the other hand, who hoped to see the whole revolution undone, these first months of 1793 saw a revival of the exciting expectations of a year before. The Republic seemed a sinking ship, crazed, in addition, by mutiny in its own crew.
