Abstract This study investigated the biometry, pre-germination treatments and substrates for the germination of diaspores of Balfourodendron riedelianum. The diaspores were characterized during germination according to their length, width, thickness, thousand kernel weight (TKW) and water content. Dormancy overcoming was tested by diaspore scarifying with sandpaper, sulfuric acid immersion, water and water at 100 °C; together with the control (untreated), they were associated to different substrates (including paper (EP), sand (EA) and vermiculite (EV). Abstract:
AbstractTropical Legumes III project as a development intervention focused on enhancing smallholder farmers’ access to seeds of improved groundnut varieties using multi-stakeholder platforms. Open Data Kit was used to collect information from the platform members using structured questionnaires and focus group discussions (FGDs). Descriptive statistics and adoption score were used to analyze the data. Selection of appropriate project location, reliable beneficiaries, timely supply of seeds, and training on good agronomic practices (GAPs) and effective supervision on production were the major thrusts of the TL III project. The results indicated that the IP members accrued additional income ranging from $214 to $453 per hectare for wet season. The same increase in beneficiaries’ income was reported per hectare for dry season from $193 to $823, respectively; all due to the TL III intervention. The results further indicated increasing access by farmers to services (e.g., improved seeds, extension, credit facilities, market, etc.) and enhanced productivity (farm size, pod and haulm yields). Findings further revealed an average increased market price of 21.5% and 18% for dry and wet season groundnut production, respectively. There was high adoption score (78%) of improved seeds and other GAPs. The study recommends the need to replicate similar interventions in other areas. Continued capacity building on GAPs and improved business management skills to Extension Agents and farmer groups will sustain the successes achieved by the TL III project.

AbstractThe high percentage of farmers (80–90%), including the pro-poor in remote areas, who have no access to recently released and high-yielding varieties proves the failure of various seed delivery models implemented so far. The ideal model to grow a crop commodity business to reach farmers in developing countries with seed of improved legume crop varieties has been a hard topic for development organizations. Past studies have shown that the full and balanced integration of multiple stakeholders’ knowledge and contexts into the process of agricultural technology development increases the uptake and ownership among end users.

Abstract:
AbstractNumerical concepts are an integral part of everyday conversation and communication. Expressions relating to numbers in natural language can have precise or imprecise interpretations. While the precise interpretation most prominently appears in mathematical contexts, the imprecise interpretation seems to arise when numbers (as quantities) are applied to real world contexts (e.g., the rope is 50 m long). Earlier literature shows that the (im)precise interpretation can depend on different factors, e.g., the kind of approximator a numeral appears with (precise vs. imprecise, e.g., exactly vs. roughly) or the kind of numeral itself (round vs. non-round, e.g., 50 vs. 47). We report on a corpus-linguistic study and a rating experiment of English numerical expressions. The results confirm the effects of both factors and additionally an effect of the kind of unit (discrete vs. continuous, e.g., people vs. meters). This shows the contextual variability in the interpretation of numerical concepts in natural language.

Abstract This chapter is devoted specifically to count data for three reasons: (i) they are common in ecological studies (e.g. clutch sizes, numbers of fledglings from a nest, numbers of seeds per pod...); (ii) they are simple to collect and are therefore often the data collected by students (e.g. numbers of beetles in a pitfall trap, number of pollinator visits to flowers...); and (iii) they pose numerous issues that linear models with their normal error structure cannot deal with. Two studies will be examined with the response variable being counts, starting with one that nearly fits the ideals of a Poisson distribution well, the other less so. Example 1 deals with fledgling numbers in relation to clutch initiation date. The data are on the northern cardinal bird, Cardinalis cardinalis, and were collected to test the hypothesis that birds that start their clutches later may suffer higher pre-fledging offspring mortality. Example 2 focuses on pollinator flower visits in Passiflora speciosa in relation to flower size.

Abstract:
Previous studies on the microwave drying of corn seeds have shown that the process parameters employed play a very important role in determining the properties and quality of this grain (Gürsoy et al, 2013). Among these parameters, the drying temperature has a fundamental role (Nair et al, 2011). The main objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of temperature on drying time, energy consumption and germination rate of corn seeds after they have been dried with microwave energy. To achieve the proposed objective, the drying process of these seeds was carried out in a rotating turntable

Abstract:
The tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), widely consumed fresh fruit but also in processed form, is recognized for its nutritional qualities, rich in micro components, such as carotenoids (lycopene in particular), phenolic compounds and vitamin C. The goal of this work is to valorize the tomato; in the form of paste, seeds, peel and mixture of seeds-peel; in order to obtain a powder rich in antioxidant constituents. Convective drying of the various tomato by-products (paste, seeds, peel and mixture) is an essential process in the valorization of the studies products. The results obtained, showed

The aim of this paper is to investigate the thermal conductivity of various biomass products and investigate the thermal conductivity when moisture is added. In this study, the biomass used was seeds from Bermuda grass and a mix of wildflowers (e.g. Lupine, flax, Coreopsis and Shasta daisy). Thermal diffusivity is calculated with a transient, one-dimensional conduction experiment. The experiments on aluminum is performed to test the experimental test setup to ensure the accuracy of the technique. Before obtaining the biomass thermal conductivity tests, the actual thermal conductivity values ar

This study leveraged existing data infrastructure and relationships from the Feed the Future Senegal Naatal Mbay (“flourishing agriculture”) project, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by RTI International from 2015 to 2019. The research informed and empowered farmer organizations to track and respond to rural households in 2020 as they faced the COVID-19 pandemic. Farmer organizations, with support from RTI and local ICT firm STATINFO, administered a survey to a sample of 800 agricultural households that are members of four former Naatal Mbay–support
