ABSTRACT The German geologist Reinhold Seemann (1888–1975), curator at the Wurttemberg natural history collections in Stuttgart, focussed most of his scientific work on the younger Tertiary north of the Alps. After 1936 he became especially interested in the Nordlinger Ries, an enigmatic geological structure in Southern Germany, which at that time was considered by most geologists to have originated through a volcanic catastrophe, but in the 1960s was to be reinterpreted as an impact crater. Seemann, however, adhered to a gradualist theory of Ries Basin genesis throughout his life, regarding t

Lobelia macrocentron (Campanulaceae) was rediscovered when conducting floristic sampling for the Flora inventory of Santuario El Palmito, a natural protected area in the municipality of Concordia, Sinaloa, Mexico. The species was discovered 169 years ago by B.C. Seemann between 1849 and 1850, as part of one of the inland explorations of the Herald’s voyage. Seemann’s specimens served as the type and only known collection of the species. AbstractA method for the correction of peak position for the Seemann-Bohlin X-ray diffractometer, useful for practical application, is presented. The position of diffraction peaks is largely influenced by both the displacement of specimen from the diffractometer circle and the shift of the X-ray tube focus. The described correction method has been used for investigation of thin layers, especially for the precise determination of both lattice parameter and stresses in thin films. The application of the method is illustrated on samples of TiN and ZrN coatings deposited on steel substrates and ad

AbstractThe seminal recognition by Ned Seeman that DNA could be programmed via base-pairing to form higher order structures is well known. What may have been partially forgotten is one of Dr. Seeman’s strong motivations for forming precise and programmable nanostructures was to create nanoelectronic devices. This motivation is particularly apt given that modern electronic devices require precision positioning of conductive elements to modulate and control electronic properties, and that such positioning is inherently limited by the scaling of photoresist technologies: DNA may literally be one

Quality of laminates produced by Seeman Composite Resin Infusion Molding Process (SCRIMP) is studied by comparing their Fiber Volume fraction and void content. SCRIMP is a variant of Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM). Modification to SCRIMP is carried out by infusing the resin under additional pressure. Optimal process parameters for this modified SCRIMP process are suggested to yield laminates that are repeatable and consistent in quality. Void con
