Gandalfus puia gen. et sp. nov. (Bythograeidae) is reported from submarine volcanoes near the Kermadec Islands. The genus Austinograea is revised with the result that A. yunohana Takeda, Hashimoto & Ohta, 2000 is transferred to the new genus. Both of these species occur in relatively shallow waters (240–1650 m) compared to other bythograeids. A sister group hypothesis of the modern genera, Allograea + (Segonzacia + (Cyanagraea + (Bythograea + (Gandalfus + Austinograea)))) is presented to provide an interpretation of variation in eye regression and male gonopods; Austinograea and Gandalfus

The history of colonization and dispersal of fauna among deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems remains enigmatic and poorly understood. The distribution of squat lobsters of the genus Munidopsis Whiteaves, 1874 can be influenced by the rich organic matter and associated organism communities of chemosynthetic ecosystems. The present work analyzed the molecular relationships and morphology of individuals from different populations of Munidopsis exuta Macpherson & Segonzac, 2005 and M. geyeri Pequegnat & Pequegnat, 1970 in such ecosystems along the Atlantic Equatorial Belt, including the Cha

Field experience in various locations has shown that an assumption of subsurface isotropy is not always satisfactory. For example, Dunoyer de Segonzac and Laherrere (1959) stated that “Computations using vertical velocities, as derived from well velocity surveys, seemed to yield insufficient depths. On the other hand, the use of horizontal velocity, as derived from refraction traveltime curves, gave far too great depths. Both assumptions were obviously incorrect and it appeared essential to know the actual velocity along refracted oblique raypaths.” Northwood (1967) classified refraction inter

Two new species of alvinocaridid shrimps are described from a hydrothermal vent field off northeastern Taiwan at depths of 252–300 m. Alvinocaris chelys n. sp. is morphologically very similar to A. williamsi Shank & Martin, 2003 from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and A. alexander Ahyong, 2009 from the southern Kermadec Ridge. These three species can be differentiated by the shape of the postrostral ridge, telson, the second segment of the antennular peduncle and the armature of the meri and ischia of the third pereopod. The second new species, although rather similar to Alvinocaris niwa Webber,

Females of the new speciesExrima walterisp. nov. were found in sediment trap samples deployed over different sites of the East Pacific Rise (13°N) at 2600 m depth. Four traps were deposited during the HOPE99 cruise (1999) and recovered during the AMISTAD (1999) cruise on the research vessel ‘L'Atalante’. The new species is distinguished from congeners,E. singulaHumes, 1987 andE. dolichopusHumes, 1987, by the following derived characters: first somite of the urosome with 3 (one dorsal and two lateral) stout conical extensions; distal endopodal segment on the swimming leg 4 broad. Characteristics of the life-history biology of hydrothermal vent species are a prerequisite to understanding the dispersal, population connectivity, and ecology of these insular populations. The vent crab Segonzacia mesatlantica (Guinot, 1989; Brachyuran: Bythograeidae) is one of the most dominant endemic predators at deep-sea hydrothermal vents along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). However, the biological life-history characteristics remain poorly understood for this species. The objective of this study was to reveal relevant biological characteristics of the reproductive ecology of S. mesatlan

Abstract A new species of yeti crab is described from a hydrothermal vent field near the equatorial Eastern Pacific Rise (EPR)-Galapagos Microplate at a depth of 1,628 m. Kiwa gemman. sp. is the fifth species of the family Kiwaidae Macpherson, Jones & Segonzac, 2005 to be described thus far. The new species can be distinguished from other congeners by having the lateral margin of chelipeds without spines, slender and mostly straight chelar fingers, and the spinose mesial margin of the endopod of the uropod. Also notable are the unique short, stiff, scaly-tipped setae on the antennal pedunc
