The bacterium Escherichia coli uses DNA-segregating machinery known as the ParMRC system to ensure the stable inheritance of low copy-number plasmids by daughter cells during cell division. In this system, ParM, an actin-like protein, forms a filamentous spindle between ParR/parC complexes that are assembled on sister plasmids; segregation of the plasmids is achieved by growth of the ParM filaments and the resulting push of plasmids to opposite cell poles. Inspired by Nature, polymer chemists over the last century have sought new methods and strategies to control these parameters. An inverse relationship exists, however, between the ability to control the primary structure of a macromolecule and the ability to scale the production of the same macromo

Abstract:
This thesis explores the problems raised by the aggregation of entities into a global, collective level, an old problem encountered in many fields of science. We work on three projects related to the aggregation problem in social systems, using tools derived from statistical physics, and more generally quantitative tools. The first project focus on a paradigmatic model of the emergence of puzzling macroscopic behavior from simple individual rules, Schelling's segregation model. We hence propose an analytical resolution of this model and we studied analytically and via simulations the effect of

Abstract:
Genes are able to replicate horizontally and vertically- a given gene may be more successful on horizontally mobile elements than others. This includes genes that exhibit a post-segregational killing (PSK) phenotype. PSK is generated by expression of a toxin and antitoxin from a mobile element, such that if a bacterium loses the element the toxin becomes active in the cell and the cell dies. All PSKs described to date involve a toxin and an antitoxin function, though within a given group of toxin and antitoxin gene pairs only some are likely to exhibit this phenotype. Here, I investigate what

The thesis presents work regarding amphiphilic molecules associated in aqueous solution or at the liquid/solid interface. Two main topics are included: the temperature-dependent behavior of micelles and the adsorption of dispersants on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces. Various NMR methods were used to analyze those systems, such as chemical shift detection, spectral intensity measurements, spin relaxation and, in particular, self-diffusion experiments. Besides this, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was also applied for structural characterization.   A particular form of phase transition, core

Environmental factors within communities play a significant role on the health and well-being of residents. These social and physical determinants have a substantial effect on health. This interaction can result in environmental injustices, inequality, and ultimately poor health for residents. The community of Galena Park, Texas, is a predominantly minority community of Hispanic and African-American residents with previously undocumented concerns related to air quality, the built environment, access to healthcare and the food environment. Problem statement and purpose of the study Journalism is having economic issues, and the journalists knowledge of this together with tools for web analysis has increased the influence of the audience. The development of internet and the new media landscape has made several scholars call for changes in media ethics, but still not much has happend. The larger influence of the audience makes it interesting to examine how it views media ethics. Recently there has also been signs of an age segregation in media consumption where younger people are using new technology and platforms, which do not hav
