Full textThis dissertation aims to analyze poems written by the German poet and writer Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857), an under-studied author in Brazil. Our study intends to point the confluences between his poetry and the tradition of melancholy, and mainly to explore the sui generis treatment of the subject developed by the author. Thus, five poems were selected to build our corpus: Sehnsucht [Yearning, 1834], Im Herbst [In Fall, 1837], Wehmut [Melancholy, 1815], Wehmut [Melancholy, 1837] e Mondnacht [Moonlit Night, 1837]. In this work, we do not intend to offer a comprehensive history of melancholy, but only to highlight the main topics related to the analysis of our corpus. Rather than just listing elements of melancholy in the writers verses, our goal here is to show the particular way in which melancholy takes form in his poetry: as a tenderness belonging to his poetic process. The dialogue between these poems and melancholy has one point in common: music. Music seems to be essential to Eichendorffs work. His poem Wünschelrute [Divining rod] can be understood as a motto of his poetry: Schläft ein Lied in allen Dingen,/ Die da träumen fort und fort,/ Und die Welt fängt an zu singen,/ Triffst du nur das Zauberwort the poet uses this magical word, the poetry, to awake the sleeping song of all things. Music is the starting point of remembrance, which takes the poetic persona either to a melancholic search for the past or to a Sehnsucht (an infinit wish) for foreign lands in a melancholic desire for his home. With its delicate language, Eichendorffs poetry shows a persona aware of the noises emerging around him, which bring up the ruins of a distant and desired homeland, of a lost and longing past which can be briefly revisited only through the use of language.

Starting with the basic proposition of a comparable cultural construction of Sehnsucht and Saudade, sentiments defined in the logic of a natural pathos (non-rhetorical, original) and functionalised within the logic of a national pathos stemming from the crisis situation experienced at the end of the 17th Century. Recognition of the sublime as a Greek sentiment in a crisis situation enables a reinterpretation of the history of the reception of the sublime that deviates from a vision dominated by the universal illuminist conception of the sublime as proof of human liberty in the presence of danger. The relevance attributed to the aesthetisation of pain and to contemplative faculty (Schiller) enables the explanation of sad enthusiasm, under the impact of the concept of The Joy of Grief and Ossianism. We consider this evolutionary moment important in order to be able to articulate the history of the reception of the sublime with the genesis of Sehnsucht and Saudade as valuable sentiments: in a moment of crisis, the elegiac transposition of the sentiment of loss combines with the original sentiment of belonging to the place and with the cult of collective memory, projecting an idealised past into the future. This configuration is known as natural pathos, which functions as national pathos, namely in cultures that in the 19th and 20th Centuries preserved the notion of a supranational Empire, as in the case of German and Portuguese culture respectively. In the case of post-war and post-holocaust Germany, criticism of this fixation was much more severe than in the case of post- Salazar Portugal. Criticism of the cultural construction of the sentiment, namely the passage from natural pathos to national pathos, is considered the most recent phase of a compared history of pathos that this study is developing in an analysis of theoretic discourses (philosophical and philological) and lyrical texts. Contrary to the discourse that places emphasis on the epic dimension in the construction of national identity, based on the notion of national epic poetry (National Epics) that German Romanticism developed from the reception of Os Lusíadas, in this study we favour the interaction between philosophy and poetry for the cultural construction of Sehnsucht and Saudade, which are valuable sentiments to ‘work through’ moments of crisis. Instead of reproducing the traditional discourse of national literary history that defends said constructions as belonging to the country and the people, the compared history approach allows a transcultural and interliterate geography that highlights the importance of the relationships of reciprocal reception, either directly or indirectly, to develop concepts considered original in a given culture and national literature. After the compared analysis of theoretical discourse there follows an analysis of a corpus of German and Portuguese poetry, with texts that are important for constructing, modifying and deconstructing Sehnsucht and Saudade, which seeks to determine the evolutionary phases in the field of lyric poetry.
