Abstract:
Sehnsucht (longing) and alienation were two central themes of 19th century German Romanticism in literature, music and art. Franz Schubert was one of the great masters of the Romantic era to understand and express these intense emotions through his compositions. This paper discusses Sehnsucht and alienation in Schubert’s settings of the Mignon songs from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehjahre (Master William’s Apprenticeship). Mignon, a secondary character in this novel, is a prime example of one who experiences these emotions and whose principal medium of expressing herself is through her five songs. My thesis focuses on how Schubert portrays Mignon’s longing through use of dissonance, harmonic progressions, melodic contour and shifts in vocal register.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to analyze poems written by the German poet and writer Joseph von Eichendorff (1788-1857), an under-studied author in Brazil. Our study intends to point the confluences between his poetry and the tradition of melancholy, and mainly to explore the sui generis treatment of the subject developed by the author. Thus, five poems were selected to build our corpus: Sehnsucht [Yearning, 1834], Im Herbst [In Fall, 1837], Wehmut [Melancholy, 1815], Wehmut [Melancholy, 1837] e Mondnacht [Moonlit Night, 1837]. In this work, we do not intend to offer a comprehensive history of melancholy, but only to highlight the main topics related to the analysis of our corpus. Rather than just listing elements of melancholy in the writers verses, our goal here is to show the particular way in which melancholy takes form in his poetry: as a tenderness belonging to his poetic process. The dialogue between these poems and melancholy has one point in common: music. Music seems to be essential to Eichendorffs work. His poem Wünschelrute [Divining rod] can be understood as a motto of his poetry: Schläft ein Lied in allen Dingen,/ Die da träumen fort und fort,/ Und die Welt fängt an zu singen,/ Triffst du nur das Zauberwort the poet uses this magical word, the poetry, to awake the sleeping song of all things. Music is the starting point of remembrance, which takes the poetic persona either to a melancholic search for the past or to a Sehnsucht (an infinit wish) for foreign lands in a melancholic desire for his home. With its delicate language, Eichendorffs poetry shows a persona aware of the noises emerging around him, which bring up the ruins of a distant and desired homeland, of a lost and longing past which can be briefly revisited only through the use of language.

Evans, Jedidiah Daniel William. "Look abroad, Angel: concentric circles of Sehnsucht in the work of Thomas Wolfe." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12415.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores Thomas Wolfe’s fiction through the lens of Sehnsucht, a German term for longing that serves a dual purpose. First, it links Wolfe’s career-long preoccupation with longing within a transatlantic exchange of ideas surrounding homesickness, nostalgia, and longing. Second, it reveals a deeply idiosyncratic form of longing present in Wolfe’s work, reconfiguring ideas around more familiar expressions of desire to reveal Wolfe’s underlying ontology of longing. This analysis reveals a new critical perspective on Wolfe that properly historicizes his work within its cultural context. Chapter One addresses Wolfe’s complex reception history, arguing that new technologies of modernism prompted a dramatic reconception of the idea of “culture” in the US. Chapter Two examines a particular formulation of “the South” operating within both Wolfe’s fiction and the strain of criticism that has sought to position Wolfe’s work as emblematic of a distinctly “Southern” literary tradition. Chapter Three explores Wolfe’s crucial encounters with German culture, situating Wolfe’s Sehnsucht alongside the Heimat of the German Romantics. Chapter Four addresses his German reception and influence on German writers. Exploring the specter of Nazism, his story “I Have a Thing to Tell You” is also reconsidered. This thesis diverges from previous studies by exploring this story’s improbable German language translation during WWII, by exiled Jewish novelist Rudolf Frank. Chapter Five argues that any analysis of Wolfe must consider the profound and enduring effect his writing had on authors as diverse as Jack Kerouac and Stephen King. This chapter also charts Wolfe’s impact on the works of Australian authors Christopher Koch and Dorothy Hewett, and explores his profound influence on Ray Bradbury. My central contention is that Thomas Wolfe should not be seen as a neglected Appalachian novelist, but as an important—fundamentally global—figure of American literature.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present thesis explores the experience of romantic desire (Sehnsucht). It is mostly based on a wide comparative study of the 19th century European and partly also Northern American literary texts which are used as a tool to define and describe the key features of the Sehnsucht experience. It also tries to demonstrate - using the method of ideal types - the different attitudes of the romantics towards their longing. The final chapter then deals with the various kinds of the counter-romantic criticism that are both aimed against the Sehnsucht experience and relevant from the perspective of the religious studies; it also shows several different Christian responses to this experience. The thesis exposes practical implications of different answers to the relation between the infinite desire and the finite world, between the promises of the miraculous Blue Flower and the everyday life. Rather than arguing for one or other of these answers it wants to create a map of both affirmative and critical attitudes to Sehnsucht.

Doctoral thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1822/9874.

Full text
Abstract:
Starting with the basic proposition of a comparable cultural construction of Sehnsucht and Saudade, sentiments defined in the logic of a natural pathos (non-rhetorical, original) and functionalised within the logic of a national pathos stemming from the crisis situation experienced at the end of the 17th Century. Recognition of the sublime as a Greek sentiment in a crisis situation enables a reinterpretation of the history of the reception of the sublime that deviates from a vision dominated by the universal illuminist conception of the sublime as proof of human liberty in the presence of danger. The relevance attributed to the aesthetisation of pain and to contemplative faculty (Schiller) enables the explanation of sad enthusiasm, under the impact of the concept of The Joy of Grief and Ossianism. We consider this evolutionary moment important in order to be able to articulate the history of the reception of the sublime with the genesis of Sehnsucht and Saudade as valuable sentiments: in a moment of crisis, the elegiac transposition of the sentiment of loss combines with the original sentiment of belonging to the place and with the cult of collective memory, projecting an idealised past into the future. This configuration is known as natural pathos, which functions as national pathos, namely in cultures that in the 19th and 20th Centuries preserved the notion of a supranational Empire, as in the case of German and Portuguese culture respectively. In the case of post-war and post-holocaust Germany, criticism of this fixation was much more severe than in the case of post- Salazar Portugal. Criticism of the cultural construction of the sentiment, namely the passage from natural pathos to national pathos, is considered the most recent phase of a compared history of pathos that this study is developing in an analysis of theoretic discourses (philosophical and philological) and lyrical texts. Contrary to the discourse that places emphasis on the epic dimension in the construction of national identity, based on the notion of national epic poetry (National Epics) that German Romanticism developed from the reception of Os Lusíadas, in this study we favour the interaction between philosophy and poetry for the cultural construction of Sehnsucht and Saudade, which are valuable sentiments to ‘work through’ moments of crisis. Instead of reproducing the traditional discourse of national literary history that defends said constructions as belonging to the country and the people, the compared history approach allows a transcultural and interliterate geography that highlights the importance of the relationships of reciprocal reception, either directly or indirectly, to develop concepts considered original in a given culture and national literature. After the compared analysis of theoretical discourse there follows an analysis of a corpus of German and Portuguese poetry, with texts that are important for constructing, modifying and deconstructing Sehnsucht and Saudade, which seeks to determine the evolutionary phases in the field of lyric poetry.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT C. S. LEWIS’ CONCEPT OF SEHNSUCHT: PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS, AESTHETIC ANALYSIS, AND IMPLICATIONS FOR EVANGELISM AND APOLOGETICS Matthew David Crawford, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2015 Chair: Dr. Mark T. Coppenger C. S. Lewis’ concept of Sehnsucht as inconsolable longing for beauty holds much promise for Christian aesthetics, evangelism, and apologetics. In his autobiography, Surprised by Joy, and many of his other works, Lewis shows how desire for beauty can draw individuals toward God. This dissertation fully develops Lewis’ concept of Sehnsucht within the framework of his life story as well as his writings. The dissertation then explores the corroboration of Lewis’ concept within both Christian and secular philosophical contexts. Once this foundation has been laid, the potential of Sehnsucht for opening hearts to the gospel of Christ and overcoming objections to faith in Him is outlined. Finally, the dissertation aesthetically analyzes specific films and pieces of music in search of common elements that may evoke Sehnsucht, as well as elements that may prevent it from being experienced.
