Abstract:
A model describing the dynamics of faecal coliforms (FC) in the Seine estuary has been developed and coupled with a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model. As input to this model three types of FC sources were considered: (1) FC transported by the Seine river flow at the estuary entrance at Poses dam; (2) FC brought in through the tributaries of the Seine estuary; and (3) the outfalls of the treated effluents of the WWTPs located along the estuary. As previous studies in the Seine estuary showed that a large proportion of FC was attached to SM, two pools of FC were considered separately in the model: free FC and FC attached to SM. Two main processes controlling the fate of FC in the estuary were considered: mortality and settling. The model calculates for a given discharge of the Seine river at Poses the longitudinal distribution of FC along the estuary. The model was validated by comparison of model calculations with experimental data in various hydrological conditions. The model also correctly reproduced the impact of the main river flow rate on the level of estuarine water's contamination. Finally, the model was used to test different scenarios of sanitation, suggesting priorities for sanitation efforts.

Abstract:
Abstract. Inland waters are an active component of the carbon cycle where transformations and transports are associated with carbon dioxide (CO2) outgassing. This study estimated CO2 emissions from the human-impacted Seine River (France) and provided a detailed budget of aquatic carbon transfers for organic and inorganic forms, including the in-stream metabolism along the whole Seine River network. The existing process-based biogeochemical pyNuts-Riverstrahler model was supplemented with a newly developed inorganic carbon module and simulations were performed for the recent time period 2010–2013. New input constraints for the modeling of riverine inorganic carbon were documented by field measurements and complemented by analysis of existing databases. The resulting dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations in the Seine aquifers ranged from 25 to 92 mg C L−1, while in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents our DIC measurements averaged 70 mg C L−1. Along the main stem of the Seine River, simulations of DIC, total alkalinity, pH and CO2 concentrations were of the same order of magnitude as the observations, but seasonal variability was not always well reproduced. Our simulations demonstrated the CO2 supersaturation with respect to atmospheric concentrations over the entire Seine River network. The most significant outgassing was in lower-order streams while peaks were simulated downstream of the major WWTP effluent. For the period studied (2010–2013), the annual average of simulated CO2 emissions from the Seine drainage network were estimated at 364±99 Gg C yr−1. Results from metabolism analysis in the Seine hydrographic network highlighted the importance of benthic activities in headwaters while planktonic activities occurred mainly downstream in larger rivers. The net ecosystem productivity remained negative throughout the 4 simulated years and over the entire drainage network, highlighting the heterotrophy of the basin. Highlights CO2 emission from the Seine River was estimated at 364±99 Gg C yr−1 with the Riverstrahler model. CO2 riverine concentrations are modulated by groundwater discharge and instream metabolism. CO2 emissions account for 31 % of inorganic carbon exports, the rest being exported as DIC.

The article examines the question of the authorship and generic classification of La Seine et ses bords (1836). This work is commonly misattributed to Charles Nodier, but the most likely author is Alexandre Mure de Pélanne, who in 1835 published a similar essay on the Saône River. The comparison of both works shows a clear difference in their perspectives: La Saône et ses bords, with an emphasis on the his- torical context, meets the generic criteria of album pittoresque (picturesque album), whereas a focus on topography and hydrology of La Seine et ses bords brings it closer to the genre of mémoire géographique (geographical memoir). The scientific scope of La Seine et ses bords also distinguishes it from Nodier’s and Taylor’s Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l’ancienne France, the most famous cycle of Romantic journeys through France.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The Achères wastewater treatment plant, located just downstream of Paris, discharges its effluents into the lower Seine River. The effluents contain large numbers of heterotrophic bacteria, organic matter, and ammonium and are a source of nitrifying bacteria. As a result, degradation of organic matter by heterotrophic bacteria and subsequent oxygen depletion occur immediately downstream of the effluent outlet, whereas nitrifying bacteria apparently need to build up a significant biomass before ammonium oxidation significantly depletes the oxygen. We quantified the potential total nitrifying activity and the potential activities of the ammonia- and nitrite-oxidizing communities along the Seine River. In the summer, the maximum nitrifying activity occurs in the upper freshwater estuary,∼ 200 km downstream of Achères. The quantities of nitrifying bacteria, based on amoA gene copy numbers, and of Nitrobacter organisms, based on 16S rRNA gene copy numbers, were correlated with the potential nitrifying activities. The species composition of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was investigated at two sites: the Triel station just downstream from Achères (km 84) and the Seine freshwater estuary at the Duclair station (km 278). By means of PCR primers targeting the amoA gene, a gene library was created. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of the analyzed clones at both sites were affiliated with the genus Nitrosomonas. The Nitrosomonas oligotropha- and Nitrosomonas urea-related clones represented nearly 81% of the community of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria at Triel and 60% at Duclair. Two other ammonia-oxidizing clusters of the β subclass of the Proteobacteria, i.e., Nitrosomonas europaea- and Nitrosospira-like bacteria, were found in smaller numbers. The major change in the ammonia-oxidizing community between the two stations along the Seine River-upper estuary continuum was the replacement of the N. oligotropha- and N. urea-related bacteria by the Nitrosospira-affiliated bacteria. Although the diversities of the ammonia oxidizers appear to be similar for the two sites, only half of the restriction patterns are common to both sites, which could be explained by the differences in ammonium concentrations, which are much lower in the upper estuary than in the river at the effluent outlet. These results imply a significant immigration and/or selection of the ammonia-oxidizing bacterial population along the continuum of the Seine River from Paris to the estuary.

The scrapbooks and wartime papers of American Alma A. Clarke reveal how one woman repurposed gendered propaganda during the Great War. Clarke was in France from January 1918 to July 1919 as both a child welfare worker with the Comité franco-américain pour la protection des enfants de la frontier and as an auxiliary nurse in the American Red Cross Military Hospital in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The Great War provided Clarke with new ways to contribute, new arenas in which to share her expertise, and perhaps most importantly, new perspectives on the significance of her contributions to society.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a re-reading of the history of divorces from the re-establishment of divorce in France in 1884 until the eve of the First World War, by distinguishing three major territories: the urban population, the rural population and the Department of the Seine. To refine the analysis, we will add data distinguishing Paris from its suburbs, within the Seine Department. The interest of the analysis, beyond measuring the level of divorces in these territories, is to answer the question of the homogenisation of divorce behaviour between 1884 and 1913. The available sources also provide details on divorces, which are generally unavailable outside the national level, such as which spouse obtained the divorce, the reason for the divorce, the length of the marriage, the age and age difference between the two spouses, and the number of children of divorced couples. In addition to measuring the levels of divorces in these territories, the aim will therefore be to find out whether the characteristics of divorces are the same in the urban and rural populations and in the Seine Department and, if not, to try to understand why they diverge.

Abstract:
The article describes the circumstances in which the France-Pologne association, led by Henri de Montfort, was established in 1919 and operated to 1940. In the available literature on the subject, the activity of this association has not been given much attention. The Les Amis de la Pologne association established by Rosa Bailly in 1919 played an important role in creating a positive image of Poland in the city on the Seine in the interwar period. The recognition of the Polish National Committee (KNP) by Paris in August 1917 as the official Polish representation paved the way for the creation of the France-Pologne association. Having realised how important it was to use propaganda in international political and military relations, the Polish delegation to the Paris Peace Conference handed over the competences of the KNP Propaganda Office to the France-Pologne association. Its most important task was to conduct the promotional activities in the central press, supported by the government on the Seine. Throughout the interwar period, to advertise the Second Polish Republic’s achievements in France, France-Pologne co-organised readings, lectures, concerts, anniversary celebrations and participated in the scholarship exchange of Polish and French high schoolers and students. It also informed the French public opinion about economic relations with Poland in its magazines: „La Pologne.

Abstract:
The effects of two types of anthropic disturbances (reaping and plowing) were followed over 3 years, on four calcicolous meadows of the Seine valley (Haute-Normandie) in France, using the quadrat points method. Multivariate analysis performed on the overall data show that compositions and structures of the different plant communities are mainly influenced by the site geographic position along an ecological gradient developing from the Seine river estuary toward the uppper stream of the river. Over the 3 years of observation, a significant increase of the species diversity (Shannon's index) and richness was observed in the reaped plots compared with the plots that were abandoned after disturbances. However, there was no significant difference between the two treatments in the species diversity as well as richness. Results are discussed in view of conservative management of calcicolous meadows, since these seminatural ecosystems are especially threatened in Western Europe.Key words: calcicolous meadows, disturbances, species diversity and richness, conservation, Haute-Normandie, France.[Journal translation]

Carbon dioxide partial pressure and radiocarbon activity were measured in air and seawater in the Bay of Seine and around the COGEMA-La Hague nuclear reprocessing plant (northwest France) during 3 cruises in 2000 and 2002. Results clearly show that the sea is a source of CO2 and 14C to the atmosphere. High 14C concentrations in air and water related to the La Hague liquid waste are clearly recorded. For the restricted area of the Bay of Seine, CO2 carbon and 14C fluxes were estimated, indicating that less than 3% of the liquid 14C release is introduced in the atmosphere.

Abstract:
This paper provides a snapshot of the key findings of an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) review of flood risk prevention policies in the Paris metropolitan area. With an innovative flood risk assessment, the study shows that a major flooding of the Seine River, similar to the flood disaster of 1910, could affect up to 5 million residents in the greater Paris area and cause up to 30 billion (109) euros worth of damage. Economic growth, jobs and public finances could also be significantly affected at the national level. The OECD Review on Flood Risk Management of the Seine River – commissioned by the basin organisation Seine Grands Lacs with the French Ministry of Ecology and Île-de-France regional council – recommends raising risk awareness among citizens and businesses, and improving the resilience of the metropolitan area to flood risks. Recent floods in Europe and New York City's Hurricane Sandy disaster in 2012 illustrated the vulnerability of today's ever-denser cities to flooding and the need to adapt critical infrastructure systems to be able to cope with extreme weather events. The OECD review suggests ways to minimise the risks and better prepare the Île-de-France region. It notes that proposed projects to develop and expand the city's transport and logistics networks offer an opportunity to put some of its suggestions into practice.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. The La Bassée floodplain area is a large groundwater reservoir controlling most of the water exchanged between local aquifers and hydrographic networks within the Seine River basin (France). Preferential flows depend essentially on the heterogeneity of alluvial plain infilling, whose characteristics are strongly influenced by the presence of mud plugs (paleomeander clayey infilling). These mud plugs strongly contrast with the coarse sand material that composes most of the alluvial plain, and can create permeability barriers to groundwater flows. A detailed knowledge of the global and internal geometry of such paleomeanders can thus lead to a comprehensive understanding of the long-term hydrogeological processes of the alluvial plain. A geophysical survey based on the use of electromagnetic induction was performed on a wide paleomeander, situated close to the city of Nogent-sur-Seine in France. In the present study we assess the advantages of combining several spatial offsets, together with both vertical and horizontal dipole orientations (six apparent conductivities), thereby mapping not only the spatial distribution of the paleomeander derived from lidar data but also its vertical extent and internal variability.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A Pseudomonas fluorescens isolate (PF-1) resistant to carbapenems was recovered during an environmental survey performed with water from the Seine River (Paris). It expressed a novel Ambler class A carbapenemase, BIC-1, sharing 68 and 59% amino acid identities with β-lactamases SFC-1 from Serratia fonticola and the plasmid-encoded KPC-2, respectively. β-Lactamase BIC-1 hydrolyzed penicillins, carbapenems, and cephalosporins except ceftazidime and monobactams. The bla BIC-1 gene was chromosomally located and was also identified in two other P. fluorescens strains isolated from the Seine River 3 months later.

Abstract:
