Mai, Angela Marie. "Beliefs Influencing Hiring Agents' Selection of Qualified Autistic Candidates." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5022.

Abstract:
Qualified and capable working age autistics face an 83% unemployment rate, thus, straining the economy and deteriorating their quality of life. This research examines potential contributing factors by inquiring what hiring agents' beliefs may be influencing their selection of qualified autistic candidates. This quantitatively weighted, concurrent, mixed methods (QUAN > qual), multiple linear regression study measured the influence of hiring agents' control, normative, and behavioral beliefs upon their selection of qualified autistic candidates. Through the theoretical lens of Ajzen's theory of planned behavior, conceptually crystallized with other validated theories; a representative, simple, random probability sample of hiring agents throughout the contiguous United States (n = 212) participated in this study. This model statistically significantly identified hiring agents' beliefs influencing their selection of qualified autistic candidates to fill open positions (F(45, 73) = 36.067, p < .001, adj. R2 = .930). The inclusion of autistics in organizational diversity policies and practices (B = 0.266), overcoming dependability stereotypes (B = 0.195), and the fear of embarrassment (B = 0.187) were the most significant (p < .001) quantitative influencers. Participants (30%) qualitatively conveyed a desire for comprehensive autistic education. Future study should explore public policy aimed at organizational education relative to qualified autistic candidates. This increased scientific understanding could help develop expanded public policy leading to decreased unemployment rates for autistics, increased organizational performance for all business types, and improved socioeconomic stability across the nation resulting from increased economic contributions and decreased social service expenditures.

Kutcher, Eugene James. "Assessing fit in the interview: How candidates consider content and context cues to Person Organization Fit." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27655.

Full text
Abstract:
The interview is the ideal opportunity for the job candidate to assess his/her fit with a potential employer. While much research from the recruiting literature shows that candidates' perceptions of PO Fit lead to important outcomes such as intentions to pursue a position and acceptance of job offers, fewer studies explore how such fit perceptions are formed. The current study utilized a policy capturing approach to model how individuals interpret and combine cues from the interview experience as they formulate their perceptions of PO Fit. The cues tested included interview question content and the contextual variables of interviewer behavior and interview process factors. College students read a series of interview scenarios where these cues were manipulated, and provided their reactions about PO Fit, as well as about fairness and the ultimate decision to pursue an employment relationship. Although values-related question content was predicted to be most influential in the determination of PO Fit, the contextual factors more strongly affected all outcomes. Furthermore, for many participants, the relationships between these contextual effects and the outcome variable (intention to continue in the selection process) were mediated by perceptions of PO Fit and fairness. Considerable intercorrelation among the three dependent variables was found, and could be attributed to limitations of the method employed or job seekers' generalized and non-focused reactions following interviews. Additional research is needed to further investigate PO Fit perceptions from interview stimuli; suggestions and implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to obtain information regarding the effectiveness of currently used admissions criteria (undergraduate grade point average; master's degree grade point average; Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) and Miller Analogies Test (Mat) scores; ratings on essays, interviews, and letters of recommendation; and an accomplishment coefficient) for doctoral study at University of the Pacific School of Education in Stockton, California. Archival data compared these measures with certain criteria for finishing the doctoral program (first-semester grade point average, overall doctoral degree grade point average, passing or failing comprehensive examinations and number of trials to do so, years to appointment of dissertation committee, grade in the intermediate statistics course, years to awarding of degree, and whether the degree was completed). Subjects included all students admitted to the school's doctoral programs between 1976 and 1990 who took at least nine units in the pursuit of that degree. Data from 337 student records were analyzed and produced the following statistically significant results: There were small but significant correlations between certain clusters of admissions criteria (GRE and MAT scores and master's degree grade point averages) and certain program criteria (first-semester and overall doctoral grade point averages, statistics grade, and number of trials to pass doctoral comprehensive examinations). Multiple linear regression also indicated a small but significant ability to predict a few criteria from the GRE and MAT. Multiple linear regression also indicated a small but significant ability to predict a few program criteria within individual School of Education departments. The admissions criteria did not, in most cases, significantly differentiate those students who were successful in the doctoral program as measured by the chosen criteria. Implications of these findings were discussed in the final chapter. The study concluded with recommendations for further use of the data and for future research.

Political-party elites are one of the most pertinent objects of study in Political Science. The composition of the political classes and the functioning of party organizations were and continue to be systematically analyzed by scholars who seek to contribute to the development of the area. Nevertheless, it is interesting to note the existence of very imprecise aspects when issues related to the formation of political elites and the exercise of intraparty activities are addressed. By accepting the party statutes as possible explanatory variables of the candidature selection processes, the main objective of this dissertation was to verify to what extent the norms defined by the statutory documents are reflected in the profiles of the candidates that are, in fact, selected. To that end, the adopted cut turned to the nominations to compete for the position of mayor in the city of Goiânia in the municipal elections of the year 2016. Methodologically, the analysis was organized as a case study and was based on the structure proposed by Hazan and Rahat (2001; 2006), which listed some criteria of inclusiveness about the selection of candidates perceived from aspects present in the party's own statutes. In addition, candidates profiles were observed based on information provided by the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral. Thus, data collection and analysis allowed us to state that, without disregarding sociocultural factors and local political dynamics, statutory norms can be considered as one of the dimensions capable of influencing the results of candidature selection processes.

Abstract:
Hiring the wrong leader can have disastrous effects on the productivity, moral, time and budget of an organization. In fact, a gap of leaders will arise in the next years, which makes it necessary to know and use the right strategies for attracting and selecting the appropriate future leaders who have the ability to successfully lead a company. Therefore, recruiting and selecting the right leaders is an important challenge for all organizations worldwide. How can they find, attract and choose people to become leaders? To answer this question, this Thesis looks at the whole process of hiring future leaders for organizations. First, we want to determine what is necessary to be successful in a leadership position in an organization. Second, we figured out what kind of recruitment strategies can be used in order to attract and find leaders, and third, we aim at showing which methods companies can employ to select the best fitting candidate for their vacant leadership position. In order to find answers to these questions, we have conducted interviews with seven leaders from different industry sectors, who shared their experience about leadership and the way of finding, attracting and selecting talented people who can become future leaders. Moreover, we conducted a questionnaire that has been handed out to students who might be potential leaders of the future. To ensure the meaningfulness of the study, we asked students from different faculties in 21 countries. The reason of the mixture of different sources is to acquire a broader insight into how the recruitment and selection of leaders takes place, with the aim of creating a representative picture.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study was to identify an effective and appropriate framework or process for evaluation of software developers. Critical review of existing literature on the subject revealed that there are various factors that influence the evaluation of software developers for employment including the impact of the skills shortage; changes in the way software developers evaluate employers; and a fresh look at expanding the resource pool where software developers can be found. In addition to the literature review opinions of 11 purposively selected participants in the Westem Cape, which deal with this issue on a daily basis were obtained. For the research an interpretivist philosophy shaped the approach to a research strategy of grounded theory and data collection that was based on semi-structured interviews without pre-conceived theories, which gave the research its inductive and qualitative character. The research results presented findings that covered the following applicable areas: recruitment policies; minimum criteria that software developer candidates must meet; skill levels; desired characteristics; market related critical success factors; resource channels; evaluation processes and techniques in practise. In keeping with the approach to grounded theory research three major categories were identified namely: finding suitable software developers; the profile of a suitable software developer; and lastly, the approach to evaluate candidates. Analysis of the relationship between these categories and associated sub-categories led to the following conclusions: • in order to effectively assess a software developer's technical skill, it is necessary to administer a practical test or assignment; • formal and recognised tests of behavioural characteristics are not essential to form an accurate assessment of a candidate's character, but is advisable; • recruitment agencies may well be most effective as a source of candidates but cannot be regarded as the most effective channel to find suitable candidates. Herein lies a comparison of quantity versus quality.
'n Navorsing strategie van 'gegronde teorie' and data insameling by wyse van semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude is gevolg.

The present work aims to evaluate the influence that different methods of selection exert over the differentiation of candidates in public examinations organized by FGV Projetos. Three stages were considered for this study: the objective written test, the discursive written test and the evaluation of titles. In the attempt towards deepening of public selection process, FGV Projetos has been formulating, in its exams, questions that require the necessary skills to perform a specific public function. In this sense, based on the obtained results, an individual and joint diagnosis of selection models currently applied were achieved The study also intends to be a guideline for the recruitment processes, establishing as a criterion of influence the weighted average of the grades of each stage of selection, the performance of one stage in relation to the other and the classification of the candidates on the final results. In order to achieve this, the candidates should undergo judicious evaluations, with different stages pertinent to the specifics of the position. The present work had a quali-quantitative nature, used a non-random sampling of the public examinations, realized by FGV Projects for the Administration area and adopted, as a data collection instrument, the documentary investigation of the opening announcements and the collection of secondary data of the results of 20 (twenty) selective processes executed and homologated between the years of 2013 and 2016. Finally, the socioeconomic and -demographic aspects of the candidates in comparison with their final position in the process were associated. The subjects of this study were those enrolled in the process who were present on the objective written test and / or the discursive written test, applying for Public Examinations for administrative areas, all of higher education level, segmented by the same field of knowledge.

Tahooni, Mohammad. "Mobility-based Candidate Selection and Coordination in Opportunistic Routing for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31604.

Abstract:
Opportunistic Routing (OR) is an effective and enhanced routing scheme for wireless multihop environment. OR is an approach that selects a certain number of best forwarders (candidates) at each hop by taking the advantage of the broadcast nature of the wireless medium to reach the destination. When a set of candidates receive the packet, they coordinate with each other to figure out which one has to forward the packet toward the destination. Most of the research in this area has been done in mesh networks where nodes do not have mobility. In this survey, we propose a new OR protocol for mobile ad hoc scenarios called as Enhanced Mobility-based Opportunistic Routing (EMOR) protocol. To deal with the node mobility, we have proposed a new metric which considers the following: geographical position of the candidates; the link delivery probability to reach them; the number of neighboring nodes of candidates; and the predicted position of nodes using the motion vector of the nodes. We have compared EMOR with five other well-known routing protocols in terms of delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and expected number of transmissions from source to the destination. Our simulation results show that proposed protocol improves delivery ratio and number of expected transmission in terms of different type of mobility models.

Newby, John C. "The effect of candidate age, candidate experience, and administrative level in the teacher selection process." Virtual Press, 1994. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/917820.

Abstract:
Teacher selection is an important component in the way schools and school corporations hope to attain their overall goals and objectives. This study was designed to partially replicate a study completed by H. Bradford Allison in 1981 at the University of Wisconsin - Madison which looked at the effect of candidate age, candidate experience, and administrator position in the teacher selection process.Randomly selected administrators (300 principals and 300 superintendents) were sent a packet of information which included a candidate summary containing hypothetical information about a teacher candidate and a position description which outlined the teaching position to be filled. The candidate summary varied age two ways (29 years and 49 years) and experience level three ways (no experience, three years experience, and eight years experience). After reviewing the information, respondents were asked to rate the hypothetical candidate on the following six criteria:1. Candidate's knowledge of the curricular area.2. Candidate's ability to transmit knowledge.3. Candidate's likelihood to contribute to overall school operations.4. Candidate's ability to maintain a disciplined teaching environment.5. Candidate's ability to create a friendly classroom environment.6. Candidate's potential to grow in the profession. The dependent variable was the composite score or overall candidate rating computed from the six criteria on the candidate evaluation form. A 3X2X2 factorial design was used for this experiment and analysis of variance was used to analyze the effects of the variables on the composite rating. An alpha level of .05 was established as the critical value. The analysis yielded a significant F ratio (.033) for the three way interaction of administrator position, candidate age, and candidate experience. There was no significant F value for any of the two way interactions (administrator position X candidate experience, administrator position X candidate age, and candidate experience X candidate age). Nor was there a significant F value for any single main effect.Further analysis of the statistically significant three way interaction found that superintendents rated 49-year-old candidates with eight years experience significantly lower than they rated 29-year-old candidates with eight years experience. These findings suggest that under the conditions utilized in this study, age discrimination was not universally evident but occurred in the way superintendents rated 49-year-old candidates with eight years experience.

Abstract:
This thesis studies women politicians’ journey along the path from candidates to elected representatives in party list proportional representation (PR list) systems. While past literature provides sufficient evidence that more women are elected in proportional electoral systems than in majority / plurality systems, there is limited research explaining the differences in women’s representation across varying types of PR list systems. This thesis aims to fill that gap, by focusing primarily on the election of women across preferential (open and ordered list systems) and non-preferential (closed list systems) PR list voting systems. Moreover, unlike the vast majority of previous research, which has relied on aggregate level data only, this research investigates the election of women at the individual candidate level. Such an approach allows the present thesis to consider, next to traditional aggregate level predictors, how party gatekeepers and the news media may either support or hinder women in progressing from candidates to elected representatives. Since the focus is set on the 2009 European Parliament elections, this thesis investigates the process of electing women cross-nationally. The results show that female candidates have a higher likelihood of being elected in non-preferential closed list voting systems than in preferential ordered list voting systems. The results suggest that this is the case because, first, party gatekeepers in ordered list systems place women in less viable electoral list positions than party gatekeepers in closed list systems; second, media cover female candidates less in ordered list systems compared to closed list systems; and finally, female candidates in ordered list systems fail to make up their less competitive starting position with preference votes because preference votes in ordered list systems do not significantly alter the initial party list rankings.

McDerment, Neil Alastair. "Identification of novel candidate genes for regulation of follicle selection in the avian ovary." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/8103.

Abstract:
Selective breeding of chickens for high growth rate and other production traits has led to the modern commercial broiler, a bird that has the genetic potential for reaching an average body weight of 2.7kg within 6 weeks of hatch. However, the breeding stock for modern broilers has to be feed controlled in order to lay large numbers of viable hatching eggs. Broiler breeders, when fed ad libitum, have a propensity to produce internal ovulations, double-yolked, misshapen or shell-less eggs. This is due to the release of multiple ova at ovulation, which results in a significant loss of production. Feed control has been shown to mitigate this effect but welfare concerns have been raised as to the side-effects for the birds. The main objective of this research was to determine the genetic basis for the regulation of ovarian follicle selection and its dysfunction in ad libitum-fed broiler breeders, and how this might be addressed by genetic selection to limit the impact on the management and welfare of future broiler breeders. A multi-layered statistical, expression profiling and cluster analysis of ovarian gene expression data from a microarray study was carried out to identify candidate genes for further study.Key stages of development were investigated for feed restricted and ad libitum-fed broiler breeders. Several gene candidate genes were validated by qPCR in a comparison of different ovarian tissues in layer type hens for subsequent analysis in broiler breeders. Sequencing of the founders of an Advanced Intercross Line (AIL) of commercial broiler breeders and White Leghorn layers was performed covering 3 regions of each of the primary candidate genes in order to identify genetic variation that could account for differences in follicle number between broilers and layers. Expression data from a microarray study highlighted a number of potential candidate genes for regulation of follicle development. One of these genes, Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor Like (PDGFRL), shares significant sequence homology with the active domains of Platelet Derived Growth Factor Receptor β. Expression profiling in layers showed peak PDGFRL expression in 5-6 mm follicles and the F2 follicle (P <0.001). PDGFRL was also up-regulated in response to ad libitum feeding in broiler breeders in 6-8 mm follicles (P<0.016), the point at which follicle selection and recruitment is considered to occur. In addition to this, while PDGFRL expression remains relatively constant between tissues under ad libitum conditions, it shows a clear reduction in expression (P <0.001) in prehierarchical follicles relative to the stroma and the F1 follicle under feed restriction. This observation is consistent with results from the original microarray study. Sequencing of the AIL Founders highlighted several SNPs in the broiler that have the potential to be used as markers for incorporation into commercial selection programs. EST alignment in preparation for targeted sequencing of PDGFRL also highlighted three potential forms of the protein, each with a different 5’ starting sequence. Initial investigation has shown all three to be expressed in ovarian follicles. QPCR in a panel of 13 tissues shows marked differences between the 3 variants, implying different and perhaps specialised roles for each. The PDGFR family has a potential role in steroidogenesis, and the expression profiling, combined with the clear effect on expression from ad libitum feeding in broiler breeders, suggest that PDGFRL is a strong candidate for involvement in the regulation of follicle development GDF9, shown to be associated with multiple ovulation in sheep, and FSH receptor, a mediator of neuroendocrine signalling to the ovary, were also investigated. They behaved as expected in layer type birds but both showed significant differential expression (P = 0.005 and 0.018 respectively) as a result of ad libitum feeding in broiler breeders. Though these two genes have been extensively investigated, these are previously unobserved effects. SNPs have also been identified in these genes which have the potential to be used as markers for incorporation into commercial selection programs. To fully exploit these results, additional investigation is recommended to confirm these results in commercial populations and to determine how they can be employed to best effect.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a comparative systematic analysis of intra-party democracy in Northern Ireland. Despite Northern Ireland's reputation as arguably 'the most heavily researched area on earth' (Whyte, 1990: vii) the internal organisation of its political parties is a sub-topic which has received scant and fleeting attention. The thesis, therefore, has two primary objectives: 1. To explore the nature of intra-party democracy in each of Northern Ireland's five main political parties, through analysis of their internal decision-making procedures: leadership selection, candidate selection and policy selection. 2. To account for instances of organisational change in relation to these procedures over the course of each party's lifetime and situate Northern Ireland's parties in a wider context.

Abstract:
In South Africa there is a shortage of systems engineers which is being addressed by a systems engineering (SE) development program. The purpose of this research was to design a selection method that could be used to select candidate systems engineers with potential thus increasing the probability of successful development of SE competencies. Based on literature and practical considerations, the following research question was formulated: Can a candidate’s SE competence potential can be predicted from personality preferences, cognition, and values (the SE Profile)? Design science research was used as the research methodology. The 15 Factor Questionnaire Plus was used to assess personality, the Cognitive Process Profile for cognition, and the Value Orientations to assess values. The 21 SE competencies were assessed using the INCOSE Systems Engineering Competencies framework. Specific values (high or low) on a combination of psychological measures are useful for predicting high competence and these vary between SE competencies. Thus psychological measures for SE as a whole cannot be identified as has been done in the literature. The number of engineers with high SE competence is inversely proportional to the number of SE competencies. Cognition measures seem more useful in identifying risk, but do not strongly predict SE competence for the given sample. From this research, no evidence was found that values have been considered previously in the SE selection literature, but values are useful for predicting high competence on at least 11 SE competencies. Because the various SE competencies require different profiles, there are few “super systems engineers”. SE competence required for the project can be achieved through a team rather than a single systems engineer. Assessment can be used as a tool for SE development by detecting anomalies and selecting candidates which have the potential for faster successful development.

Abstract:
In this thesis we present the XCS DR3 cluster candidate list. This represents the first major update of the XMM Cluster Survey since 2005. The candidate list comprises of 1365 entries with more than 300 detected counts distributed over 229 deg2. We note that a larger area (523 deg2) is available for the study of X-ray point sources and that the new XCS point source sample has more than 130,000 entries. After redshift follow-up and X-ray spectral analysis, these 1365 clusters will comprise the largest homogeneous sample of medium to high redshift X-ray clusters ever compiled. The future science applications of the XCS DR3 clusters include the study of the evolution of X-ray scaling relations and a measurement of cosmological parameters. In support of these science applications, we also present in this thesis detailed selection functions for the XCS. These selection functions allow us to quantify the number of clusters we didn't detect in our survey regions. We have taken two approaches to the determination of the selection function: the use of simple (circular & isothermal) β models and the use of ‘observations' of synthetic clusters from the CLEF N-body simulation. The β model work has allowed us to explore how the selection function depends on key cluster parameters such as luminosity, temperature, redshift, core size and profile shape. We have further explored how the selection function depends on the underlying cosmological model and applied our results to XCS cosmology forecasting (Sahlen et al. 2009). The CLEF work has allowed us to explore more complex cluster properties, such as core temperature, core shape, substructure and ellipticity. In summary, the combination of the cluster catalogues and selection functions presented herein will facilitate field leading science applications for many years to come.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation analyses the processes used by political parties to select candidates for the European elections, making the unique institutional setting and electoral dynamics of the European Parliament a “litmus test” for party organisations. By applying an institutional design theory to the ways parties nominate their candidates for the EP, I can test a wide range of pre-existing postulates about parties’ behaviours, and can do so across many different countries (thus considering various electoral settings and socio-political arenas) while also accounting for the multi-level setting in which they operate. To this end, I thoroughly explore the intra-party “machinery” at work in the drafting of nominees. More specifically, this dissertation first provides a descriptive account of the main intra-party formal rules that govern the EP selection procedures from a comparative perspective. Concretely, this descriptive analysis serves to measure the relative power of individuals, party organs, and party levels, and to establish what imperatives (membership fees, endorsements, incompatibilities, quotas) are prescribed by the various parties. On that basis, I identify the patterns of selection rules put in place by the parties. I then explore the factors that condition the parties' choices of procedures by relating the aforementioned observations to a number of national- and EU-level characteristics. Later, I confront these rules with the parties’ informal practices during the actual process, and further trace an entire process from the rules' enactment to the choice of candidates. In doing so, I hope to contribute a small but important building block to the understanding of current political parties, while also speaking directly to those who are more generally interested in comparative politics and EU politics.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines how parties respond and adapt their behavior to political violence. Building a theoretical argument about strategic party behavior and party capture, I address the following questions: How do parties select and recruit their candidates in regions with high levels of violence and the pervasive presence of VNAs? Do parties respond to violence by selecting certain types of candidates who are more capable of fighting these organizations? Do parties react differently at different levels of government? And finally, how do VNSAs capture political selection across at different levels of government? I argue that in regions where there is high "uncertainty," candidate selection becomes highly important for both party leaders and DTOs. Second, I argue that as violence increases and the number of DTOs also, criminal organizations, as risk-averse actors, will capture candidate selection. I posit that as violence increases, there is a greater likelihood that candidates will have criminal connections. To test my theory, I use the case of Mexico. Violence in Mexico and the presence of criminal organizations across the country has experienced a great deal of variation since the 1990s. In Chapter 2, I find that violence affects the gubernatorial candidate selection of the PRI, PAN and PRD. In high violence states, parties select gubernatorial candidates with long experience in subnational politics compared to other types of experiences. In chapter 3, however, I find that at the municipal level not all the parties respond equally to violence. As a municipality becomes more violent, the PRI and PAN party leaders are more likely to select mayoral candidates who were either state or federal deputies or candidates who were both. In contrast, the PRD is likely to recruit state deputies as a function of violence, but not national deputies or candidates who were deputies at both the state and federal level. Interestingly, I find that as the municipality becomes more violent, party leaders are less likely to recruit inexperienced candidates. This result suggests that parties do indeed respond to levels of violence. Finally, in Chapter 5, I show that criminal organizations capture candidate selection to reduce uncertainty. As utility-maximizing actors, DTOs seek to influence the selection of candidates as a function of violence. At the state level, criminal organizations are more likely to capture candidate selection in states with the presence of multiple DTOs. Party capture is more likely to happen in states where more than one DTO are fighting to control the turf. I show that criminal organizations at the state level equally capture all parties. This finding reveals that DTOs are diversifying their political connections. While under the dominant party regime, they colluded with PRI officials, under the new political Mexican democratic configuration, DTOs are establishing other political relationships with different political parties.

Abstract:
The Social Democrats’ have had an incomparable influence over Swedish politics during the 20th century. This study looks at how this working-class party descriptively represents the working-class on its ballot lists for the Swedish parliament, Riksdagen. Using a mixed methods approach this study builds on an original data set including all of the Social Democratic ballot lists for Riksdagen from 1970 to 2014. The data is combined with qualitative interviews with party representatives in two constituencies. The combined results of the studies show that the Social Democrats are not descriptively representing the Swedish working-class. The party representatives seem to want to represent the working-class and they think that they are descriptively representing this social class. The results indicate that it might be more important for the party to find candidates that are loyal, than candidates who want to represent working-class interests. Furthermore, there are indications that the party might define the working-class in outdated terms; rather than focusing on the level of education, the party defines the working-class largely in terms of those employed in manual labor and heavy industry.

Superpixel. Shape index.
Abstract: Cancer is one of the causes with more mortality worldwide. Lung cancer is the most common type (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). Its symptoms appear mostly in advanced stages, which difficult its treatment. For patient diagnostic, computer tomography (CT) is used. CT is composed of many slices, which maps a 3D region of interest. Although it provides many details, its analysis is very exhaustive, which may has negatively influence in the specialist's diagnostic. The objective of this work is the development of lung segmentation and nodule detection methods in chest CT images. These images are segmented to separate the lung region from other parts and, after that, nodule detection using superpixel methods is applied. The Axes' Labeling had a mean of nodule preservation of 93.53% and the Monotone Chain Convex Hull method presented better results, with a mean of 97.78%. For nodule detection, the Felzenszwalb and SLIC methods are employed to group nodule regions. A nodule candidate selection based on shape index and curvedness is applied for superpixel reduction. Then, classification of these candidates is realized by the Random Forest. The LIDC database was divided into two data sets: a development data set composed of the CT scans of patients 0001 to 0600, and a untouched, validation data set, composed of patients 0601 to 1012. For the validation data set, the Felzenszwalb method had a sensitivity of 60.61% and 7.2 FP/scan. Key-words: Lung cancer. Nodule detection. Superpixel. Shape index.

Abstract:
Studies of the most luminous quasars at high redshift directly probe the evolution of the most massive black holes in the early universe and their connection to massive galaxy formation. However, extremely luminous quasars at high redshift are very rare objects. Only wide-area surveys have a chance to constrain their population. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has so far provided the most widely adopted measurements of the quasar luminosity function at z > 3. However, a careful re-examination of the SDSS quasar sample revealed that the SDSS quasar selection is in fact missing a significant fraction of z greater than or similar to 3 quasars at the brightest end. We identified the purely optical-color selection of SDSS, where quasars at these redshifts are strongly contaminated by late-type dwarfs, and the spectroscopic incompleteness of the SDSS footprint as the main reasons. Therefore, we designed the Extremely Luminous Quasar Survey (ELQS), based on a novel near-infrared JKW2 color cut using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission (WISE) AllWISE and 2MASS all-sky photometry, to yield high completeness for very bright (m(i) < 18.0) quasars in the redshift range of 3.0 <= z <= 5.0. It effectively uses random forest machinelearning algorithms on SDSS and WISE photometry for quasar-star classification and photometric redshift estimation. The ELQS will spectroscopically follow-up similar to 230 new quasar candidates in an area of similar to 12,000 deg(2) in the SDSS footprint to obtain a well-defined and complete quasar sample for an accurate measurement of the brightend quasar luminosity function (QLF) at 3.0 <= z <= 5.0. In this paper, we present the quasar selection algorithm and the quasar candidate catalog.

Abstract:
Abstract Demographic history and natural selection are central forces shaping the genetic diversity of populations. Knowledge on these forces increases understanding of processes shaping genetic variability of populations. In this PhD thesis I investigated demographic history and selection in multiple populations of Arabidopsis lyrata, an outcrossing herbaceous plant species of the Brassicaceae family. Due to its wide distribution in the temperate and boreal regions, A. lyrata serves as a good model system to study population genetic consequences of colonization of northern latitudes. The first aim of this study was to characterize the demographic and colonization history of the species using site frequency spectra estimated from whole-genome diversity data. Another aim was to detect genetic loci targeted by recent selective sweeps at genome-wide scale as well as at candidate flowering time genes. Patterns of genome-wide selection at linked sites (linked selection) were also compared between populations of Capsella grandiflora and A. lyrata with contrasting demographic histories. Evidence for strong effective population size decline in the past few hundred thousand years was detected in A. lyrata populations species-wide. This study also suggests recent Scandinavian colonization from an unknown refugium, distinct from the Central European source population. Selection analyses revealed loci targeted by positive selection in two Scandinavian lineages after the recent population split as well as selective sweeps in flowering time genes in the colonizing populations. In comparison with the studied C. grandiflora population, the Norwegian A. lyrata population had weaker purifying selection and no evidence for reduction of diversity around genes was found. This thesis offers novel information on species colonization history and its genome-wide effects, which is important for understanding the framework of local adaptation
Näiden tekijöiden tutkimus on tärkeää eliöiden sopeutumisen ymmärtämiselle. Tässä väitöskirjassa tutkin demografista historiaa ja valintaa monivuotisen ristisiittoiseen ruohovartisen Brassicaceae-heimon kasvilajin idänpitkäpalon (Arabidopsis lyrata) useissa eri populaatioissa. Idänpitkäpalko on erinomainen mallilaji pohjoiseen ympäristöön sopeutumisen tutkimukseen, koska sen toisistaan eristäytyneet paikalliset populaatiot ovat levittäytyneet laajalle boreaalisella ja lauhkealla ilmastovyöhykkeellä. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli luonnehtia populaatioiden demografista historiaa ja kolonisaatioreittejä käyttäen koko perimän laajuisesta muunteluaineistosta estimoituja alleelifrekvenssispektrejä. Lisäksi koko perimän laajuista aineistoa sekä kukkimisaikaa ohjaavien geenien sekvenssejä käytettiin positiivisen luonnonvalinnan merkkien tunnistukseen. Genominlaajuista kytkeytynyttä valintaa vertailtiin toiseen ristisiittoiseen Brassicaceae-heimon lajin Capsella grandifloran populaatioon, jonka demografinen historia poikkeaa huomattavasti tutkituista idänpitkäpalon populaatioista.

The main purpose in this thesis is to analyse the candidate selection process for Federal Deputy in Brazil in the 2010 elections within four parties: DEM, PMDB, PSDB e PT. Heretofore, the study of candidate selection in our country have privileged the formal dimension of selection, like party´s statutes analysis or regional dinamics. In the other hand, except for some exceptions, the conclusions pointed out the impact of brazilian institutional design in candidate selection, undervaluing parties as autonomus units in the process. Therefore, from data about candidacy gathered at the Electoral Supreme Court and a survey applied to one hundred and twenty candidates, we tried to sketch the candidate selection process at the intra-party arena. The conclusions suggests that political parties are capable in divert from institucional incentives and choose candidates by different methods regarding the strenght and direction of the institutionalization. Hence, the different methods bring relevant consequences for the candidates profiles as well for the parties themselves.

Abstract:
The thesis looks at the reluctance of French political parties to select more women candidates in legislative elections despite a legal obligation to do so (the 'parity' law). The introductory first chapter sets up the questions and approaches of the thesis. The second chapter reviews the literature on women in politics and on political parties, arguing that there are insufficient linkages between these works. The third chapter explores some initial hypotheses regarding sex and candidate selection, looking at supply and demand explanations and considering whether parties with a high degree of internal democracy will find it easier to implement a quota. The next three chapters explore three main theories of party organisation in turn. Chapter four evaluates the electoral competition approach and asks whether parties prefer men candidates because they are more likely to win. This argument is tested empirically through a longitudinal study of candidate performance over four elections. Chapter five examines the institutional approach and considers how France's political institutions frame the choices available to parties when selecting their candidates. It reveals how some parties have considerably more room for manoeuvre than others. Chapter six looks at party ideology to explain why some parties might be motivated by their ideology to implement the parity law. Using a rational choice approach, the model argues that parties will prioritise the different choices available to them according to their underlying needs and motivations, and this will affect the order in which choices are made.

Abstract:
Policy responsiveness to the demands of the whole is important because it is a determinant of growth and development: Institutions that make governments more inclusive favor economic progress and factors that make governments more exclusive inhibit prosperity. Growth-enhancing policies likely to please the citizenry include policies that ensure the prevalence of the rule of law, policies that protect property and intellectual rights, and policies that foster competition, access and the perfection of markets. In contrast, growth-retarding policies likely to initiate from the representation efforts of politicians advancing narrow concerns include infringement on property rights, diffuse patent legislation, regulation to rise some price or wage, regulation blocking the entry into specific markets, official protection to monopolistic markets and adoption of legal barriers against international competition. If policy responsiveness to the interests of the whole favors economic affluence, what political institutions matter for the advancement of wide-encompassing interests through the policy making process? This dissertation examines the idea that the incentives provided by the intra-party candidate selection methods are crucial in order to understand the politicians' representation efforts. Expressly, increasing participation and democratization of the intra-party nomination process increase the incumbent's propensity to represent wide-encompassing interests and adopt policies that favor economic affluence. In contrast, elite-centered nomination methods decrease the incumbent's incentive to be politically responsive to the interests of the whole in favor of the representation of narrow concerns that often demand policies that benefit the group at the expense of overall economic growth. Empirically, the idea that aspirants to party tickets must first respond to the demands of those with the power to add their names to the electoral ballot finds robust support. In the developed world, candidate nomination appears largely informed by inclusive and democratic practices. Quite the opposite, in the less-developed world events of intraparty participatory politics are for the most part absent, with nomination decisions often monopolized by national party leaders and local party bosses.
