Abstract:
In this work we analyze some selection principles over some classes of hyperspaces. In the first part we consider selective variations of tightness over a class of function spaces whose topologies are determined by bornologies on the space. As results, we extend several well known translations between covering properties and closure properties of the topology of pointwise convergence. In the second part we consider artificial hyperspaces that assist the analysis of productive topological properties. We emphasize the results characterizing productively ccc preorders and the characterization of the Lindelöf property via closed projections.

Fox, Douglas E. "The application of choice set principles to typeface selection." Diss., Wichita State University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/3927.

Full text
Abstract:
Choice set size has implications on how people select typefaces, which are normally presented in long, alphabetical lists in programs such as Microsoft Word™. The extensive size of the choice set makes choosing a typeface a difficult task, which is unfortunate because typeface selections are highly important. Choosing the right typeface ensures that the rhetoric of the message is expressed correctly, and that confusions do not occur due to low legibility. Two ways of decreasing the choice difficulty is by reducing the number of typefaces and incorporating categories into the choice set. For these reasons, this experiment explored the effects that choice set design has on typeface selections in two studies. Study 1 examined the effect that size and categorization had on the affective response (satisfaction, difficulty, etc.) and preference for making a typeface decision. Participants reported higher satisfaction and preferred typeface choice sets that contained informative categories. Results also revealed that moderate size choice sets were associated with less difficulty, less choice overload, and higher satisfaction than large choice sets. Study 2 examined the effect that categorization had on the strategy for choosing a typeface across different document types. Participants spent more time choosing a typeface and contemplated more typefaces when using choice sets that contained categories, regardless of document type. This provides evidence that categorization lead participants to use a more optimal decision strategy, which should increase the likelihood of selecting a more optimal typeface.

Abstract:
Many modern products require the careful planning of a vast number of aspects of their life cycle to succeed in the market, such as, financing, functionality, quality, reliability, environmental impact, manufacturing process, relationship with suppliers, etc. Potentially, the numerous domain- independent design methods generated for decades in the fields of engineering design and creative problem solving (CPS) have much to offer in today's complex multi-objective product design activity. However, the number of methods used in industry is relatively small, especially in early stages of design. Of those that are used, some are practised at the wrong stage or incorrectly. Incorrect selection of methods occurs often. It leads to poor results and to distrust of design methods generally, and has been identified as one of the main causes for the lack of design methods in industry. This thesis deals with the development of a strategy to undertake correct selection and use of methods in industry. It covers design methods to explore problems, to generate ideas and to evaluate concepts. Three papers, A-C, have been included in this licentiate thesis. The first paper, Managing uncertainty in the design and development process by appropriate methods selection, is of a theoretical nature and investigates a principle to help engineers in the correct selection of methods. The second paper, The application of the 4Ps model to the management of creativity & innovation in product development, explains a case study conducted at Volvo Car Corporation that explores the characteristics of engineering practice and the problem and need of implementing methods in industry. Finally the third paper, Exploring the need for an interactive software tool for the appropriate selection of engineering design methods, explains how the principle of method selection can be applied in industry so that engineers learn with the minimum of difficulty how to select and use methods correctly.

In this thesis we apply principal component analysis to the Portuguese stock market using the constituents of the PSI-20 index from July 2008 to December 2016. The first seven principal components were retained, as we verified that these represented the major risk sources in this specific market. Seven principal portfolios were constructed and we compared them with other allocation strategies. The 1/N portfolio (with an equal investment in each of the 26 stocks), the PPEqual portfolio (with an equal investment in each of the 7 principal portfolios) and the MV portfolio (based on Markowitz's (1952) mean-variance strategy) were constructed. We concluded that these last two portfolios presented the best results in terms of return and risk, with PPEqual portfolio being more suitable for an investor with a greater degree of risk aversion and the MV portfolio more suitable for an investor willing to risk more in favour of higher returns. Regarding the level of risk, PPEqual is the portfolio with the best results and, so far, no other portfolio has presented similar values. Therefore, we found an equally-weighted portfolio among all the principal portfolios we built, which was the most risk efficient.

Delaney, James Dillon. "Contributions to the Analysis of Experiments Using Empirical Bayes Techniques." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/11590.

Full text
Abstract:
Specifying a prior distribution for the large number of parameters in the linear statistical model is a difficult step in the Bayesian approach to the design and analysis of experiments. Here we address this difficulty by proposing the use of functional priors and then by working out important details for three and higher level experiments. One of the challenges presented by higher level experiments is that a factor can be either qualitative or quantitative. We propose appropriate correlation functions and coding schemes so that the prior distribution is simple and the results easily interpretable. The prior incorporates well known experimental design principles such as effect hierarchy and effect heredity, which helps to automatically resolve the aliasing problems experienced in fractional designs. The second part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of optimization experiments. Not uncommon are designed experiments with their primary purpose being to determine optimal settings for all of the factors in some predetermined set. Here we distinguish between the two concepts of statistical significance and practical significance. We perform estimation via an empirical Bayes data analysis methodology that has been detailed in the recent literature. But then propose an alternative to the usual next step in determining optimal factor level settings. Instead of implementing variable or model selection techniques, we propose an objective function that assists in our goal of finding the ideal settings for all factors over which we experimented. The usefulness of the new approach is illustrated through the analysis of some real experiments as well as simulation.

Abstract:
An effective principal is the catalyst for an effective school. For this reason, it is imperative that education stakeholders all over the world become responsible for addressing the selection, preparation and development of principals. The purpose of this study is to explore the similarities and differences in the selection process, preparation programs and the professional development practices as perceived by elementary school principals in urban public schools in the southern U.S and urban public schools in eastern China. The naturalistic paradigm of inquiry was used to frame the study and acquire and analyze data. The sample consisted of fourteen elementary school principals in a southern, urban area in the U.S. and an eastern, urban area in China selected via a purposive sample. The researcher visited their campuses between September, 2004 and January, 2005. Intensive interviews and observations were used to gather information from principals in American and Chinese urban elementary schools. Data from interviews were unitized into categories. Some of the conclusions included: ?? The American respondents indicated that current admission criteria for entrance into educational leadership programs were not sufficient for identifying a candidate??s aptitude for being a successful principal. ?? The Chinese principals believed that most selected Chinese principals are successful school leaders. ?? The American principals were satisfied with the effectiveness of the university preparation programs. ?? The Chinese principals were not satisfied with the effectiveness of classroom instruction of preparation programs. ?? The American principals felt that their professional development programs were helpful for improving their practice and their schools. ?? The Chinese principals were not satisfied with the effectiveness of the professional development programs. ?? Similarities and differences exist between the American and Chinese respondents?? perceptions of selection, preparation, and professional development.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the process used to select elementary school principals in Quebec.
The results of the study indicated that the majority of school boards do not have written selection policies and procedures to guide the selection of elementary school principals. In addition, the majority of school boards do not have written job descriptions, written selection criteria or written selection techniques.
Although there was an absence of written job descriptions, respondents considered educational leadership as the main expectation for elementary school principals.
In the absence of written selection criteria, it was noted that respondents had criteria that they felt were important for the elementary school principalship. The three most important personal selection criteria were decision-making skills, human relations skills and communication skills.
The results of this study indicated that the director-general and the director of human resources were the main participants in the selection committee. However, the final employment decision was primarily the responsibility of the school commissioners.
The interview was the most common technique used by respondents in this study.
Respondents were satisfied with their selection process and do not plan to revise this process. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Roach, Jeffrey A. "Principal involvement in teacher selection : practices and attitudes among elementary school principals." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1063421.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which elementary principals are involved in teacher selection and to determine the opinions of principals on : (a) procedures used in the selection process, (b) current status of their involvement, (c) who establishes teacher selection processes, (d) involvement of teachers in teacher selection, (e) their current level of preparation to effectively select teachers, and (f) the role of decentralized governance in teacher selection. The study sought to determine if principal involvement in teacher selection was governed by policy or superintendent regulations. Also, the study sought to determine if there was variance in teacher selection practices within a school district and possible reasons for such variance. Finally, the study sought to determine if any of three demographic variables (school district regional classification, school district enrolment, and governance structure) influenced principal involvement in teacher selection.Data were collected from 188 randomnly selected elementary principals in Indiana via a survey containing 28 items divided into 4 categories. Data were analyzed using an analysis of variance, and research decisions were based on the .05 level of significance. In general, the level of involvement of Indiana elementary principals in teacher selection is relatively high. Demographic variables incorporated in this study appeared to have little effect on principal's involvement. There were three exceptions. Where variance of practice occurred within a district, significance was found in paper screening of candidates, interviewing of candidates, and making recommendations for employment. Principals' involvement in teacher selection was not affected by regional classification, enrollment of the school district, engagement in decentralized governance, existence of regulations, or established board policy on teacher selection.Findings in this study suggested that principals were highly involved in many aspects of teacher selection with one exception, writing of the job vacancy announcement. It was also found that there was a majority of schools that did not have existing school councils. Principals believed that their involvement in teacher selection was important, yet their training in this area appeared to be limited.Based on the outcomes, recommendations for further study included assessing teacher selection practices at sites where school councils exist, examining discrepancies between perceived selfconfidence and formal training, and evaluating the role of the principal in writing job vacancy announcements.

Abstract:
In an era in which school principals' jobs are much more complex and demanding than they were a few decades ago, the increasing challenges of the position have affected principal recruitment and selection efforts by school districts nationwide. Moreover, the rapidly increasing rate of principal retirements has exacerbated the problem of a shortage of qualified candidates for principal positions. As a result, it is important to explore current principals' perspectives on how best to attract and retain qualified prospective applicants during the hiring process. In this case study, 16 principals and associate principals from both public and independent schools in three states described their experiences, their reasons for applying for a principalship, their perspectives on the application process. They also gave advice and recommendations for both administrators of hiring processes and for future applicants. One-on-one qualitative interviews with a pre-established interview protocol were conducted as the sole data collection method. Three primary research questions were investigated: How do school principals perceive the existing principal recruitment processes? How do school principals perceive the processes used by the school districts to select them? To what extent do job descriptions, as currently written, systematically cover the realities of the duties of incumbent principals? From analysis of the interviews, the researcher chose to focus on four main topics that emerged from principals' perspectives on the hiring process: (a) the decision to pursue a principalship and searching for openings, (b) going through the process, (c) personal reactions to the process, and (d) recommendations. These topics were compared and contrasted with relevant research reported in the literature to generate the following four major results of the present study. First, standardized and structured interviews not only helped decision making but also won applicants' trust. Second, hiring processes were generally similar to what previous research suggested. Third, deficiencies in hiring processes that were first identified a number of years ago continue to persist. Finally, whether applicant pools are shrinking appeared to be an open question. These findings contribute to the very limited research that has thus far examined principal hiring practices from the perspectives of school principals, and have allowed suggestions to be made for possible areas of improvement in principal hiring processes.

Abstract:
This study examined the literature on leadership and counselling to determine their similarities, and investigated how principals perceived their leadership role in terms of the theories of counselling and contemporary leadership. It further explored the implications of the findings for the selection, performance appraisal and professional development of principals. The research was divided into four stages. Firstly, the literature of effective counsellors and educational leaders was reviewed to find their significant similarities. Secondly, 116 principals from Government and Catholic primary, secondary and special schools in Sydney, NSW, Australia were involved in a Q-sort survey to prioritise what they deemed to be the essential emphases of effective educational leaders in schools. Analysis was by descriptive quantitative methods to provide a basis for subsequent interviews and qualitative analysis. Thirdly, structured interviews were carried out with thirteen of these principals to cast further light on the Q-sort survey results. Qualitative analysis was largely based on Bohm???s interpretation of Strauss???s axial coding paradigm. Fourthly, content analysis was carried out on formal documents of the NSW Department of School Education and the Catholic School System of the Sydney Diocese to determine the degree of congruence between selection criteria, criteria for performance appraisal and components of professional development programs for principals and the emphases in the literature and the responses of principals in this study. Contemporary literature on both leadership and counselling emphasised the importance of the leader???s/counsellor???s authenticity, empathy, respect, and effective communication skills. Principals prioritised these counselling-related attributes after a focus on students and strategic leadership but ahead of organisation, resource management, evaluating and controlling. Some ranking differences by gender, years of experience, type of school and school system were noted and discussed. Document analysis revealed that the criteria by which principals are selected, appraised and professionally developed do not include an emphasis on the counselling-related attributes which is commensurate with the importance afforded these attributes both in contemporary leadership theory and from the principals??? own view of their role. Implications of these findings for theory, practice and further research were explored and recorded.

Abstract:
This paper examined editorial methods used in producing published versions of the music of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968). From this examination, I established some editorial principles to create a performance edition of five movements from book two of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Appunti op. 210. This paper includes a discussion of the sources and methods used in establishing editorial criteria. at the request of the Milanese guitarist Ruggero Chiesa (1933-1993), Castelnuovo-Tedesco set out to create a collection of didactic pieces for young guitarists. the pieces were to be collaboratively edited and fingered by Chiesa, and then given final approval by the composer. Unfortunately, the composer died before finishing the work. the pieces and sketches that survive exist in four volumes published by the Italian house, Suvini Zerboni, containing the pieces that Chiesa edited with the approval of Castelnuovo-Tedesco. the published edition also includes unedited pieces that did not undergo the collaborative process. with the goal of maintaining an unadulterated portrayal of the composer’s intentions, Chiesa presented these pieces as they appear in the manuscript. Much of the music is unidiomatic and either impossible or highly impractical to play. My study established some editorial principles for use in creating a performance edition of this work. the edition includes my engraving of the original unedited manuscript as well as ossia measures containing solutions to performance problems. the suggested solutions balance the perception of the composer’s intentions, established editorial practices, and idiomatic concerns to creating a playable edition.

Abstract:
Network security has always been an area of priority and extensive research. Recent years have seen a considerable growth in experimentation with biologically inspired techniques. This is a consequence of our increased understanding of living systems and the application of that understanding to machines and software. The mounting complexity of telecommunications networks and the need for increasing levels of security have been the driving factor. The human body can act as a great role model for its unique abilities in protecting itself from external, foreign entities. Many abnormalities in the human body are similar to that of the attacks in wireless sensor networks (WSN). This paper presents basic ideas drawn from human immune system analogies that can help modelling a system to counter the attacks on a WSN by monitoring parameters such as energy, frequency of data transfer, data sent and received. This is implemented by exploiting two immune concepts, namely danger theory and negative selection. Danger theory aggregates the anomalies based on the weights of the anomalous parameters. The objective is to design a cooperative intrusion detection system (IDS) based on danger theory. Negative selection differentiates between normal and anomalous strings and counters the impact of malicious nodes faster than danger theory. We also explore other human immune system concepts and their adaptability to Wireless Sensor Network Security.

Abstract:
This study was suggested by the need to examine the role of Indiana superintendents in candidate selection, the recruitment and selection procedures used in principal selection and the prioritization of criteria used to evaluate the candidacy of individuals for the principalship with respect to Indiana public elementary and secondary schools. A three-part questionnaire was sent to each of 296 superintendents in Indiana requesting a ranking of superintendent functions in selection, candidate determination procedures, and criteria prioritization. Demographic variables were included to determine if superintendents' prior experiences or sizes of districts represented affected decisions about principal selection. A total of 191 responses were analyzed in terms of descriptive statistics and statistically significant differences among demographic groupings. The following null hypothesis was analyzed in terms of five demographic categories: "There are no significant differences among superintendents' ratings of the important selection criteria or desired principal competencies or characteristics on the basis of any of the following categories." Five categories were analyzed. 1. Whether hiring for an elementary principalship or a secondary principalship. 2. Size of district from which responding superintendent reported. 3. Number of principals hired as superintendent. 4. Number of years as superintendent. 5. Number of years as principal (if any). Although statistically significant differences were found, none was determined to represent an important difference among these categories. Candidate competencies considered most important by responding superintendents were the following: "Ability to listen effectively to others," "Ability to communicate effectively with others, and "Ability to work cooperatively with a variety of other people and groups."The data supported communications and "people skills" for principal candidates, and the importance of proven administrative experiences. The data also supported an interest by responding superintendents in controlling the principal selection process.

Abstract:
The study of promotion or executive succession has been of interest to educators since the beginning of schools. Who should be a school's principal? The purpose of this study was twofold. First to investigate executive succession within large, urban Canadian schools boards, and second, to use a dramatic work---a play---to represent the major findings. Theatre is used to present society and its workings, it is a method of data representation that permits human emotion, care, conflict and tension to become palpable, to provoke an audience. The two purposes of this study merged to provide insight unto the "reality" of school principals' promotions from the perspective of practitioners.
Data on promotion was collected from thirteen seasoned school administrators through extended interviews. Respondents were encouraged to relate stories of individual promotions, as they understood them. The data was transcribed and analyzed using the constant comparison approach. This method yielded multiple levels of analysis including areas of reference, spheres of infra-influcnce (highly related concepts), and rules of inclusion (subsuming large amounts of data).
It was clear that promotion was a "political act" where several stakeholders fought for their interests. Then followed transcendence---the movement from the naturalistically collected and analyzed data to the play---the movement from science to art form. The rules of inclusion inspired the foundations of the novella, the novella led to the play; characters, scenes and actions were developed. A group of actors rehearsed and prepared a staged reading. Tim play was presented to a group of educators who were asked to respond to it at two levels---the work as a provocation device for preparing educational administrators and the work as the "reality" of promotion.
Clearly, the theatrical work stimulated the audience and indicated there is a valid place in administrator preparation programs for dramatic works. As well, the notion of promotion as "seeking the best possible candidate" was challenged as stakeholders' Interests dictated both promotion procedures and candidate succession. The title, Transitional Wars, seemed to capture the essence of the work.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 76-82.
The election of a new South African government in April 1994 has marked the onset of major changes in the education system. These changes will be most universally felt in their effects on schools. Thus school principals will become the fulcrum around which change takes place, receiving policy directives from the authorities and being responsible for their propagation and implementation in the schools. In such a situation, the whole question of the training, both pre-service and in-service, that is provided for school principals to equip them for their job becomes crucial. This study identifies a selection of in-service courses available to school principals in the Cape Town metropolitan area and compares the content of these courses with a list of the tasks and skills required of principals in the 1990's identified from a survey of the international literature. The aim is to determine the extent to which these courses are dealing with the tasks and skills. The literature survey also identifies a list of characteristics appropriate to effective in-service courses against which the Cape Town courses are compared. As an adjunct to the study, the opinions of a group of school principals were canvassed via a questionnaire. This questionnaire attempted to establish what management training these principals had received and also in which areas they desired training or further training. In the final section of the study, policy recommendations relating to management training for school principals are made. The study concludes that, whilst there are a number of courses on offer for school principals in the study area, management training for school principals does not appear to have been a priority in the past, there is very little co-ordination between the courses, and there are a number of important areas that are addressed by few, if any, of them. Amongst its recommendations, therefore, is the establishment of a research institute to co-ordinate in-service training for school principals and thus provide a more effective basis from which they can carry out their important role in the future.

Abstract:
This study assessed students’ satisfaction with Ramkhamhaeng University regional library services (RURLs) and the perceived quality of information retrieved from other information sources. In particular, this study investigated factors relating to regional students’ selection of information sources to meet their information needs. The researcher applied the principle of least effort and Simon’s satisficing theory for this study. The former principle governs and predicts the selection of these students’ perceived source accessibility, whereas the latter theory explains the selection and use of the information retrieved without considering whether the information is optimal. This study employed a web-based survey to collect data from 188 respondents. The researcher found that convenience and ease of use were the top two variables relating to respondent’s selection of information sources and use. The Internet had the highest mean for convenience. Results of testing a multiple linear regression model of all four RURCs showed that these four independent variables (convenience, ease of use, availability, and familiarity) were able to explain 69% of the total variance in the frequency of use of information sources. Convenience and ease of use were able to increase respondents’ perceived source accessibility and explain the variance of the frequency of use of sources more than availability and familiarity. These findings imply that respondents’ selection of information sources at the RURCs were governed by the principle of least effort. Libraries could consider the idea of one-stop services in the design of the Web portal, making it user friendly and convenient to access. Ideally, students could have one card to check out materials from any library in the resources sharing network.

The Brazilian locally adapted sheep breeds, also known as native and creole, are descendant from animals brought during the settlement period and, since then, are been subjected to evolutive (both systematic and non systematic) processes, what resulted in the formation of highly adapted genotypes to the diverse environmental Brazilian conditions. Although these breeds donât posses the same productive potential when compared with the exotic improved breeds, they are considered extremely important from a social and cultural point of view. Moreover, the locally adapted breeds are essential for the maintenance of traditional production systems. The optimization of the utilization of naturalized genetic resources depends on a deep knowledge of these populations, and then, the morphological, productive and molecular characterizations are essential to the success of conservation and utilization of these locally adapted genotypes. Therefore, the principal aim of this thesis was to deepen molecular the knowledge of the three main locally adapted Brazilian sheep breeds: Brazilian Creole, Morada Nova and Santa Ines. Thus, Chapter I entitled "Identification of selection signatures in livestock species" is a literature review that is proposed to describe the main effects of natural/artificial selection in the genomes of species of farm animals, present the main methods of signature selection analysis and discuss recent advances in this area of study. Two studies were conducted and resulted in the chapters II and III of this thesis. The chapter II, entitled âIdentification of selection signatures in brazilian locally adapted sheep breedsâ, aimed the identification and characterization of putative genomic regions that underwent selection and the identification of candidate genes related to productive/adaptative differences between these breeds. The identification of signatures of selection was performed through two approaches: population differentiation (FST) and linkage disequilibrium (iHS and Rsb). Seventy eight genes, related to functions as: immune response, nervous system development, sensorial perception and wool/hair development were identified. The chapter III, entitled âIdentification of population substructure in brazilian locally adapted sheep breedsâ, aimed the identification and characterization of of genetic substructure within the three main locally adapted Brazilian sheep breeds: Brazilian Creole, Morada Nova and Santa Ines. The level of genetic differentiation between herds of the same breeds was, in general, high. Both in the Brazilian Creole and in the Santa Ines breeds the presence of distinct groups on animals could be observed, what suggests the occurrence of different ecotypes/lineages within these breeds.

Abstract:
This thesis presents content-related and construct-related validity evidence for science sub-tests within Student Selection Test (SST) in Turkey via underlying the content, cognitive processes, item characteristics, factorial structure, and group differences based on high school type. A total number of 126,245 students were present in the research from six type of school in the data of SST 2006. Reliability Analysis, Item Analysis, Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and one-way ANOVA have been carried out to evaluate the content-related and construct-related evidence of validity of SST. SPSS and ITEMAN programs were used to conduct the above-mentioned analyses. According to the results of content analysis, science items in the SST 2006 found to be measuring various cognitive processes under knowledge, understanding and problem solving cognitive domains. Those items loaded under three factors according to PCA findings which were measuring very close dimensions. Moreover, a threat to validity was detected via one-way ANOVA due to significant mean difference across high school types.

Abstract:
The intent of this study was to garner data regarding principals' teacher selection practices and perceptions of teacher effectiveness and to examine the degree to which their teacher selection practices aligned with qualities of effective teachers. The survey was sent to 450 practicing principals in the United States. Principals reported the frequency in which they engaged in identified teacher selection practices and rank-ordered qualities of effective teachers.;Descriptive statistics summarized the level of agreement among elementary, middle, and high school principals regarding how they ranked the nine identified qualities of an effective teacher as well as the degree to which their rankings concurred with research in the area of teacher effectiveness. Principals verified the importance of key qualities of an effective teacher as evidenced by multiple analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests. An ANOVA revealed one statistically significant finding for the quality of creating valid and reliable assessments. However, the ANOVA bolstered the significance of the relevance of qualities of effective teachers at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Lastly, content analyses were conducted to determine the three most important interview questions principals asked of teacher candidates and what factor determined why a specific teacher was hired over others.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine in depth and analyze how and on what basis selection of guests managed by doormen primarily in an exclusive bistro in Stockholm. Qualitative methods in the form of personal interviews with door staff and participant observations were made. Interviews with doormen who work at two other similar places have also been carried out in order to find the differences and similarities in the selection process. To connect the results in a scientific way, we have mainly used Pierre Bourdieu's theories of capital forms and the field, and Göran Ahrne and Apostolis Papakostas organization theories. Previous research related to the phenomenon of selection in one way or another, along with the overarching theories, are used to answer the questions and purpose of this study. The study has concluded that membership, social networks, appearance and material assets are critical to be included in bistros that happens to have implicit rules and criteria. It has been found that these mechanisms can be translated in to sociological terms as social capital, cultural capital and doxa (norms). It would also show that the doormen in this study consider the individual’s class membership to be a more important attribute rather than ethnicity in the selection process.

Abstract:
We introduce the notion of coupling distances on the space of Lévy measures in order to quantify rates of convergence towards a limiting Lévy jump diffusion in terms of its characteristic triplet, in particular in terms of the tail of the Lévy measure. The main result yields an estimate of the Wasserstein-Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance on path space between two Lévy diffusions in terms of the couping distances. We want to apply this to obtain precise rates of convergence for Markov chain approximations and a statistical goodness-of-fit test for low-dimensional conceptual climate models with paleoclimatic data.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to provide educators with empirical information on the qualifications personnel managers expect from entry-level employees. The study also compared school officials' rankings of employment qualifications of high school graduates with qualifications found by business personnel managers when selecting entry-level workers. The data collection process involved a card sort technique utilizing two decks of cards. Surveys were mailed to Indiana public school superintendents, high school principals, public school board presidents, and business personnel managers. A total of 1924 surveys were mailed with 528 ranked surveys returned.Six null hypotheses were two-way comparisons of desired entry-level qualifications and current entry-level qualifications. Ten null hypotheses compared desired qualifications with current entry-level qualifications. There was little agreement among the respondents or respondent groups regarding the most desired or currently found entry-level qualifications. All respondent groups ranked science and technology, social and economic studies, and writing as the least found qualifications. Personnel managers ranked science and technology as the most desired entry-level qualification. School officials ranked this qualification as one of the least desired entry-level qualification. If educators are to prepare students to meet the challenges of entry-level employment, general expectations must be developed that are acceptable to a variety of employers. Only through collaborative efforts between business and school officials will entry-level qualifications be developed that have meaning to both groups. Until that collaboration occurs, educators willcontinue to rely on their own beliefs as they prepare students for entrance into the world of work.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes new approaches for variable selection aimed at forming representative groups of observations. For that matter, we suggest a new variable importance index based on parameters derived from the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), which is integrated to a forward procedure for variable selection. The quality of clustering procedure is assessed by the Silhouette Index. A simulation study is designed to evaluate the robustness of the proposed method on different levels of variable correlation, noise and number of observations to be clustered. Next, we modify the original method by remapping observations through kernel functions tailored to improving the clustering quality and reducing the retained variables. The modified version is applied to 3 databases related to chemical processes, increasing the quality of clustering measured by SI on average 150%, while using around 6% of the original variables.

Abstract:
This study sought to explore the governance mechanisms that result in agent principal alignment in Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), with specific reference to Job Creation. This is important to understand in South Africa as infrastructure PPPs are central to the government’s economic growth strategy. The Renewable Energy Programme (REIPPPP), a decade-old PPP, was identified as the ideal context given its consistent job-creation alignment between the state and its agents, Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Agency Theory posits that agents are inherently self-interested and thus unlikely to act in the interests of principals. However, while some theoretical propositions envisage instances of agent-principal alignment, what is less known are the precise mechanisms by which this can be achieved. This study explored the questions of moral hazard and adverse selection, which refer to goal conflict and information asymmetry in agent-principal relationships. The research was undertaken through a qualitative study, comprised of secondary data analysis as well as semi-structured interviews. It was found that by aligning contracts across multiple stakeholders, agents can increase their enforcement capacity. Furthermore, a rigorous data collection system accompanied by credible penalties, results in greater compliance. This contribution enhances the theory in respect of governance mechanisms whilst simultaneously providing practical guidance for PPP structuring.

Abstract:
Student selection test in Turkey compose of two parts. The purpose of the first part is to assess students&rsquo
higher order thinking skills like analytical thinking, interpretation and reasoning about elementary school curriculum and 9th grade curricula objectives. On the other hand, second part of the test aims to assess students&rsquo
higher order thinking skills given in the high school curriculum. The main aim of this thesis is to analyze to what extend 2006, 2007 and 2008 student selection tests biology items assess higher order cognitive skills. In accordance with this purpose, elementary and high school curriculum and the appropriateness of the questions in the student selection test with the educational objectives of the curriculum are examined. In addition, dimensions of 2006, 2007, and 2008 SST biology items are examined by Exploratory Component Analysis and Confirmatory Component Analysis techniques. The result of those analysis revealed that SST biology items mostly focus on remembering skill and fail to assess higher order thinking skills. Additionally, there is not any consistency among 2006, 2007, and 2008 SSTs biology items in terms of dimensions which means there is not any construct in biology subtests of SSTs. The other aim of the present study is to identify how much academic and non-academic factors explain the biology achievement. While for academic factors reading comprehension, mathematics, physics, and chemistry achievements of students are used, age, gender, and school type are used for non-academic factors. Findings of the research revealed that academic factors, especially chemistry achievement, have significant affect on biology achievement. In terms of non-academic factors, graduating from selecting high school has important role for biology achievement. Additionally, older students and girls tend to have higher grades in biology.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if, after one year of operation, the UNT/Dallas Public Schools Leadership Development Program was progressing in accordance with the goals set out for the program. Questionnaires administered to 26 interns and 10 mentor principals and follow-up focus group interview sessions provided answers to the study's five research questions that explored the following: selection process; how interns' involvement in campus-based decision-making had changed; how mentor principals' perceptions toward interns had changed; and how administrative interns' perceptions of themselves and educational administration had changed. Findings from this study revealed the selection process provided the Dallas Public Schools an opportunity to select teacher-leaders from the district and to include a representative number of minority and women candidates for participation in the program. An area of weakness was seven interns with low GRE scores were admitted through an appeals process at the university. Another weakness revealed the majority of interns had been assigned more duties and responsibilities at the schools, but only 4 of 26 interns were being allowed to participate in any campus-based decision-making processes that could have an impact on school improvements. The study found the role of the mentor principal to be the most important factor in determining the satisfaction and success of the interns in the program. The embedded internship proved to be a disadvantage for the interns and principals, as the majority reported not having enough time to spend on administrative activities. Interns reported growth in personal and professional maturity and gained knowledge about the world of educational leadership. All 26 interns expressed the desire to become administrators in Dallas Public Schools upon completion of the program. Further research should include comparison studies between graduates of restructured programs and graduates of traditional programs to determine if there is a difference in school improvements and student achievement based upon the nature of the training of the school leader.

In the present work we focus on the interplay between selection principles and topological games. This includes a nontopological approach to these topics, with applications to indestructibility of Lindelöf spaces and a selective version of d-separability, among others. We also show the consistent nonequivalence between indestructibility and the selection principle naturally associated to it, which leads to an investigation of indestructibility of compact spaces. We conclude by showing that some constraints on the cardinality of Lindelöf indestructible spaces are equiconsistent with the existence of some kinds of large cardinals.

In an increasingly complex and sophisticated society, and in our context with special attention to business and economic relations, there is lesser space for an anchored view in stationary representations. In this regard, and with the advent of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) in Brazil, supported by Law No. 11,638 / 07, a new accounting approach was initiated prioritizing disclosure that is more refined in order to reflect more accurately corporate transactions. Perhaps, what best symbolizes this new approach is the principles bias of IFRS. However, the concern arises related to a specific point of its effective implementation in society. If the incentive or direction of the assessments that a new graduate undergoes in relation to his / her accounting knowledge, both in the professional entry exam and in the search for placement in the job market (civil servant), could be misaligned with the new principle ideals defended by IFRS. Based on evaluation theory, Preskill and Torres (1999) warn that evaluation needs to integrate learning and society practice. Similarly, Patton (1997) recalls that it is critical that an evaluator faces the challenge of making evaluations that are correlated in their application and useful. By linking this new principiological vision with evaluation theory, through the definitions presented by the authors above, professional entry exams and tests as part of civil servant selection have been analyzed by Delphi method to find out if they have used principiological questions in larger numbers. The results, however, indicate the opposite idea. They showed that there is a bigger charging of rules in the tests that were analyzed, in other words, there is still a predominance of the rule model with a single difference: now under IFRS cloak. Thus, there is a possible existence of mismatch between the ideals related to IFRS and the inductive orientation of the assessment directed to new graduates and professionals in the accounting area.

Abstract:
The present study consisted of an analysis of the process of Recruitment and Selection of People With Disability (PWD). The goal was to check and point out the difficulties and obstacles the PWD might face in the moment of Recruitment and Selection, as well as to establish if these people would feel discriminated when comparing their processes to the ones of applicants who did not present any disability. It was also the intention of this study to find out if the PWD felt they were supported by the State or any other organization when entering the working market. Firstly, a theoretical approach was developed, considering the most relevant topics to the frame of the theme of the study, namely the principles of Recruitment/ Selection and the concept of disability. Besides some legislation was referred, as it was essential to understand if the PWD were protected by law, nationally and internationally. In what investigation methods are concerned, this would be a qualitative study, based on a study sample of 14 people, obtained by contacting two organizations and individuals. In relation to conclusions, it was verified that, although national and international laws are a thorough defense of the PWD's rights to equality, there was still much to change in the reality of the process of Recruitment and Selection.

In order to quantify the direct and indirect effect through path analysis using phenotypic and genotypic values of yield components - number of stalks per plot, average diameter of stalks and their average length - affecting tons of cane per hectare, data from two experiments of sugarcane were considered. Regarding the productivity of cane per hectare data from two different experiments were obtained from cane plants and ratoon canes, in the beginning of the selection program of sugarcane improvement in the state of Minas Gerais. The following characteristics were evaluated at plot level: the tons of cane per hectare (TCH), as the main variable, and its yield components, number of stalks (NS), mean diameter of stalks (DS) and average length of stalks (LS) as explicative variables. The coefficient of determination were high in all path analyses, which, in turn, indicates that the evaluated components explain, considerably, the variation in TCH. Through the analysis of the direct fenotypic and genotypic effects, NS was the variable that best correlated to TCH in both experiments and stages showing a possibility of obtaining significant gain through indirect selection to TCH by NS. The evaluation of the cause and effect relations among the production components of sugarcane helped to verify the variation across the experiments, which is probably related to the different origins of the families evaluated. In the trail analysis, the parameters are estimated from matrix correlations that may be ill-conditioned by the multicollinearity effect among the involved variables. Due to this fact, the data were evaluated by using ratoon canes obtained from the program of sugarcane improvement at the Federal University of Viçosa in order to compare the method based on ridge regression and the exclusion of variables for main components to estimate the path coefficients under the presence of multicollinearity. Ten plants per plot were used to carry out the analyses on explaining variables Brix (percentage soluble solids), Pol, pH (potential of Hydrogen), RS (reduction sugar), TRS (Total reduction sugar), Cu (copper), Al (aluminum), Mg (magnesium), Ca (Calcium), K (Potassium), aconitic acid, phenolic compounds and the main variable sugarcane juice color (ICUMSA color). The matrix containing correlation obtained from the data were submitted to different methods to have the multicollinearity diagnostic. Under severe multicollinearity, the methods based on ridge regression and in main components presented similar results in the estimation of the path coefficients, causing sensitive reduction in the magnitude of the variance inflation factor associated with the direct and indirect effects of the path analysis. Therefore, in this study, it was possible to identify the variables Al, K and phenolic compounds as the ones that explain the sugarcane juice color. However, the other characters must be taken into account due to their great correlation and low magnitude of the direct effect, making evident the necessity of simultaneous selections of characters, with emphasis on characters that have significant indirect effect. For purposes of improvement, the indirect selection for the ICUMSA color through index selection involving variables such as Brix, Pol, RS, TRS, pH, Cu, Al, Mg, Ca, K, phenolic compounds and aconitic acid is recommended.

Finally, the main Competencies Technical skills identified in this study as the most important technical managers of agribusiness, were: experience, specific training in the area of operation, knowledge of industrial processes and management for results.
