Abstract:
AbstractMental health nurses should professionally address the self-care deficit problem in schizophrenic patients, especially in the psychosocial rehabilitation phase. The nursing intervention of the self-care deficit patients can be delivered based on the nursing theoretical framework. The Orem’s self-care theory elucidates the concept of self-care, self-care deficit, and its nursing care. In the rehabilitation context, the Orem’s theory is relevant to the aim of rehabilitation – optimalizing the client’s own daily functional capacities.

Abstract:
Background: people who become functionally dependent due to serious illness and/or the worsening of a chronic illness have different recovery paths. The attribution of the nursing diagnosis of self-care deficit versus potential to improve self-care requires, on the part of the nurse, a rigorous clinical judgment, for which a set of diagnostic activities is necessary. Objectives: the present study sought to identify the assumptions used by expert nurses when formulating the clinical judgment of self-care deficit versus the potential to improve self-care Methodology: qualitative design. Data were generated in two focus group meetings that included eleven nurses experienced in caring for persons with functional dependence and self-care defict. Previously prepared structured questions were used to facilitate discussion. The focus group meetings were recorded in audio and transcribed. Inductive content analysis was used to identify emerging themes. The checklist Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) was also used. Results: nurses` decision-making depends: the factors of influencing the potential to improve self-care abilities of a person with functional dependence, the domain of influence of these factors, and three fundamental aspects to consider when evaluating a person with functional dependence. Conclusions: the absence of recovery potential can rarely be deduced. People without cognitive impairment or with mild cognitive impairment present highest potential for recovery.

Abstract:
This research aimed at systematizing nursing care to HIV/aids patients in view of Orem's Self-care Deficit Nursing Theory, using the convergent-care method and the Self-Care Nursing Process. Subjects were thirteen HIV/AIDS patients attended at a non-governmental organization in Fortaleza/CE, Brazil. We used interview techniques, physical examination, observation and information records, with a structured instrument, addressing requisites related to universal self-care, development and health alterations. Self-care deficits corresponded to nineteen nursing diagnoses, named according to NANDA's Taxonomy II, ten of which were based on the requisites for universal self-care, five on the requisites for self-care related to development and four on the requisites for self-care related to health deviations. In care planning, goals were established and the system and health methods were selected, prioritizing support-education actions in order to engage HIV/aids patients in self-care.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to develop a family care model in treating schizophrenia patients who experience self-deficit based on the nursing system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Explanatory research design with cross-sectional approach. The population in this study were all families of schizophrenic patients in two mental health institutions in Bangkalan, Indonesia with a total sample of 72 families. The research instrument used was a re-control checklist sheet and a questionnaire about family factors and conditioning factors, nursing system, and self-deficit observations. Data analysis was performed using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) using PLS (partial least square) software. Family factors affect Nursing System with a value (T-statistic 2.079), the conditioning factor affects Nursing System with a value (T-statistic 24,827), and Nursing System affects the Self Deficit with a value (T-statistic 4,104). Family factors and Conditioning factors make a major contribution in influencing the nursing system so that the nursing system has a significant impact on the self-care process in schizophrenic patients who experience self-deficit.

The purpose of this article is to highlight the relevance of Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) in contemporary and future practice, explicitly within the global self-care movement and interprofessional healthcare. The authors discuss the relevance and important strengths within Orem’s nursing theory and recommend theoretical refinement within the context of significant societal and healthcare transformation. The constructs of global people-centered care and population health, with related social determinants of health, are identified as critical areas for development if SCDNT is to have continued relevance for nursing practice. Implications for theoretical thinking and nursing education are recommended.

Abstract:
Introduction: To determine trends in identified self-perceived knowledge deficits of paramedics, training barriers and desired methods of self-directed education. Methods: A written survey was delivered to all paramedics in an Ontario base-hospital. Respondents were asked to identify deficits from a 37-point, anatomic systems-based list. Preferred educational modalities to address knowledge deficits and factors taken into consideration when choosing self-directed education were captured. Top 5 perceived deficit topics, number of perceived deficits, top 5 factors associated with training modality chosen and factors taken into consideration for choosing training modalities, were compared against paramedic age, training (Advanced Care Paramedic; ACP, or Primary Care Paramedic; PCP) and primary location of practice (urban, rural, mixed setting). Results: Of 1262 paramedics, 746 (59.11%) completed the survey. PCPs had a higher report of deficit in both neonatal resuscitation and arrhythmia than ACPs (48.3% vs 58.8%, p=0.015; 40.3% vs 58.5%, p<0.001). Paramedics who listed rural as their primary practice location were more likely to report a deficit in pediatric respiratory disorder than those with a mixed urban/rural and primary urban practice (65.9% vs 46.3%, p=0.000; 65.9% vs 45.9%, p=0.001;) as well as a higher median number of listed deficits (9.00 vs 6.00 vs 6.00, p<0.001). ACPs were more likely to consider scheduling, location/ease of attending and cost as barriers than PCPs (85.4% vs 63.8%, p=0.000; 69.5% vs 51.4%, p=0.002; 69.5% vs 39.5%, p=0.000) while reporting an increased desire for webinar material than PCPs (56.1% vs 40.4%, p=0.007). There were no significant differences found by age. Conclusion: Targeted educational needs-based assessments can help ensure appropriate topics are delivered in a fashion that overcomes identified barriers to self-directed learning. From our analysis, increased awareness of ease of attending sessions and preferred modalities, such as webinars may be beneficial; especially for ACPs who require more annual continuing educational hours. Paramedics in rural locations may require increased continuing education, especially for rarely encountered, high risk situations, such as pediatric critical care. These findings can help direct future education in our system and others.

Abstract:
Stroke is damage to brain tissue caused by a sudden reduction in or supply of oxygen in the blood. Brain tissue that has decreased oxygen supply will experience decreased function and cell death. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of nursing care to meet the needs of physical mobility in stroke patients at RSKD Dadi Makassar. The study design was a case study in the form of a nursing care approach in two non-hemorrhagic stroke patients. The results showed both patients experienced weakness of the right limb which caused impaired physical mobility and total self-care deficit. Nursing interventions in patients include ambulation support, mobilization support, range of motion exercises and self-care assistance. Nurses should provide care and education to families about the care of stroke patients who experience physical mobility impairments and self-care deficits. Families also need to provide support to stroke patients undergoing treatment to increase motivation, speed up the recovery process and prevent complications.

Introduction: Objective: To identify self-perceived knowledge deficits of paramedics, barriers to training and desired methods of self-directed continuing education. Methods: A written 58 question survey was delivered to all 1262 paramedics under the jurisdiction of a single base-hospital in Ontario, Canada. Respondents were asked to select deficit, no deficit or not applicable from a 37-point, anatomic systems-based list. They were then asked to identify from a 15-point list which educational modalities they would choose to address any knowledge deficits. Finally, they were asked which factors they took into consideration when choosing their self-directed continuing education. Results: Seven hundred forty-six of 1262 paramedics (59.11%) completed the surveys. Of these respondents, 82 (10.99%) were advanced care paramedics, while 664 (89.01%) were primary care paramedics. Of the 645 who responded with their primary geographical setting: 136 (21.09%) listed a primary urban practice, 126 (19.53%) listed a primary rural practice and 287 (44.50%) reported a split urban and rural practice. The most common perceived deficits (respondent number, percentage); were electrolyte disturbance (418, 56.03%), neonatal resuscitation (386, 51.74%), pediatric respiratory disorder (381, 51.07%), arrhythmia (377, 50.53%), and pediatric cardiac arrest (317, 42.49%). The top 5 educational opportunities they were most likely to choose included online module (464, 62.20%), in-class lecture (423, 56.70%), web-based review (403, 54.02%), webinar (301, 40.35%) and peer consult (237, 31.77%). The top 3 barriers to choosing continuing education were work scheduling (479, 64.21%), location/ease of attending (382, 51.21%), and cost (305, 40.88%). Conclusion: Paramedics in this base hospital system identified pediatric critical care situations, electrolyte abnormalities and cardiac arrhythmia as self-perceived deficits. The most commonly selected educational opportunities included online learning, in-person training and peer consult. These preferred modalities are consistent with the identified barriers of work scheduling, ease of attending and cost. Targeted educational needs based assessments can help ensure that appropriate topics are delivered in a fashion that help overcome identified barriers to self-directed learning.

Abstract:
Background: Schizophrenia is one of the disorders in the brain that causes difficulties in processing information, solving problems and interpersonal relationships, due to interference with brain function. Patients who experience mental disorders, especially patients with schizophrenia, have decreased while doing the Daily Living Activity (ADL) because of apathy and loss of motivation means loss of interest and energy in life. This causes the patient to experience a decrease in productivity. Schizophrenia in an apathetic state experiences the disruption of daily activities such as brushing teeth, combing hair, bathing, dressing / dressing up or ignoring eccentric neatness or ignoring hygiene so intervention is needed to overcome the problems experienced.Purpose: This study aimed to find out how nursing interventions self-care deficits in schizophrenic patients. Methods: The design of this research is quantitative descriptive with a systematic review approach that has the criteria for reviewing the article carried out in a structured and planned manner. Results: Research results from the six journals analyzed nursing interventions for self-care deficits in schizophrenic patients improve personal hygiene. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing interventions for self-care deficits in schizophrenic patients are supportive group therapy, daily schedule of activities, health education, group activity therapy, motion rehabilitation, and motivation for group art therapy.

Abstract:
Four decades of neoliberal approaches to the provision of care (medical care, mental health care, childcare, and eldercare, to name a few) have resulted in a crisis of care so ubiquitous as to appear natural. Among the unanticipated consequences of the redirection of women’s labor from the unpaid sites of family and community into the paid labor market during second-wave feminism (coupled with an unprecedented privileging of commercial values with the emergence of neoliberal market fundamentalism) has been the social problem of a care deficit. What sociologist Lynn S. Chancer has called a “stalled revolution” and historian Kirsten Swinth describes as “feminism’s unfinished business” has precipitated an array of care fixes and patches: persons suffering from the consequent care deficit (either exhausted from providing care at home and the office, or lacking in care for themselves, or both) are advised to engage in self-care and self-improvement. University students, staff, and faculty are advised to use counseling and meditation apps, seek out wellness opportunities, and/or employ coaches and advisers to manage their lives and well-being. This article takes these three ready-at-hand examples of neoliberal care provisioning as a point of departure, revisits an analysis of the political economy of care labor vis-à-vis political theorist Nancy Fraser, traces the transitions in the self-care proposals proposed in US self-improvement literatures from the 1960s through the present, and offers a set of suggestions regarding radical care emerging from the author’s experience with academic labor organizing and an engagement with anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing’s model of emergent possibilities amid the disasters of capitalist accumulation.

Abstract:
A middle-range theory of heart failure self-care, derived from the self-care deficit theory of nursing, was tested among 175 Arab American older adults with heart failure. The middle-range theory achieved good statistical fit, but not all hypothesized relationships were supported. Specifically, conceptualizing basic conditioning factors as a single latent variable was not supported. However, individual factors of depression, social support, and time living with heart failure had a direct effect on both self-care agency and quality of life. Understanding predictors and outcomes of self-care within a theoretical framework is essential in caring for patients with heart failure.

Abstract:
Background: Many older persons in South Africa (SA) are affected by a poor socio-economic status, leading to an increase in the use of the public healthcare sector. However, the public healthcare sector is burdened by high volumes of patients and long waiting periods. As a result, professional nurses in primary healthcare (PHC) facilities are not able to spend enough time on proper physical examinations and assessment of needs, including health education and support to older persons to help them apply independent self-care.Aim: To determine if the socio-economic status of older persons affects their ability to apply self-care independently without support from professional nurses in the PHC facility.Design: Quantitative, descriptive research design. Methods: Older persons (N = 198; n = 192 respondents) were asked to complete the Appraisal of Self-care Agency (ASA-A) and Exercise of Self-care Agency (ESCA) questionnaires. Seven self-care deficits were identified through deductive logic after analysis of the two questionnaires. These seven self-care deficits were compared to the socio economic status of the same sample. Results: Seven self-care deficits were identified after analysis of the ASA-A and ESCA questionnaires. One self-care deficit was found to have a relationship with the socioeconomic status of the older persons. Conclusions: Low literacy levels of older persons with a low socio-economic status affect their ability to apply self-care independently without the support from a professional nurse in the PHC facility. Data analysis of the ASA-A and ESCA revealed that these older persons suffer from a “lack of knowledge and ability to acquire knowledge with regard to self-care” which had a relationship with the socio-economic status of older persons with specific reference to low literacy levels and poverty. Implications for practice: More attention should be given to older persons with a low socioeconomic status as their ability to apply self-care independently without the support from a professional nurse is limited. This would lead to less frequent visits to PHC facilities by older persons for minor ailments, decrease healthcare costs, relieve overcrowding in PHC facilities and prevent possible unintentional self-neglect.

Abstract:
Older adults who go through a situation of family abandonment tend to suffer from sadness, loneliness or even worse depression, which leads to various situations in their daily lives. Most older adults suffer from type 2 diabetes mellitus, living with this pathology requires multiple care and interventions by the person himself and with the support of the rest of the family, in order to provide adequate routine care for the patient; That is why when there is family neglect, patients lose interest in taking care of themselves and tend to fall into a routine. In the present study, the self-care deficit in older adults was identified. It is a study of non-experimental quantitative design, cross-sectional, correlational, since it is carried out at a specific time and the variables do not have a control. The population is older adults with diabetes pathology, inhabitants of a day house in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. The sample consisted of 30 people by availability. A survey was conducted among the elderly, only patients living with diabetes pathology to make an analysis of the care performed. As results, it was obtained that approximately 3% of older adults in a home for the elderly in Pachuca de Soto, Hidalgo, carry out proper self-care in their daily activities. A third of older adults have a self-care deficit, it is associated with different situations, starting with non-adherence to treatment and unhealthy habits. The majority of older adults have self-care deficits and therefore tend to be complicated by the pathologies they suffer, it is likely that their blood glucose levels are elevated, as well as the appearance of xerosis on the skin on the feet and hands; To correct this behavior, it is suggested to carry out workshops to teach the correct way to carry out adequate care, as well as to encourage adherence to treatments, carry out a good diet and exercise regularly in order to improve their health and extend life expectancy.

ABSTRACT Objective: to report the nurses' experience in relation to the training of caregivers of infants with Isolated Robin Sequence (IRS) for maintaining care after hospital discharge from the perspective of Self-Care Theoretical Framework. Method: the following categories were considered in this experience report: self-care action, self-care capacity, therapeutic self-care demand, self-care deficit, and nursing system. The nursing system was wholly compensatory and supportive-educative. Results: caregivers' training by nurses results in the acquisition of technical skills and specific knowledge related to the infant's positioning in elevated ventral decubitus, nasopharyngeal intubation, feeding-facilitating techniques and care with the feeding tube. Final considerations: the continuity of home care is guaranteed from caregivers' training for the therapeutic demand.

New York: Doubleday, 1988; list price $8.95 (No. 19 on the 1990 bestseller list of books on child care from Ingram Book Co., distributor of trade books). This scholarly book offers thorough coverage of current research on the medical aspects of attentional problems and yet manages to lend clarity to the topic. The description and inclusion of various behavior rating scales is quite helpful. Several of the fad treatments such as optometric training and dietary restrictions are thoughtfully discussed although rather gently dismissed. The book also offers brief but quality advice for teachers and parents on improving communication between home and school, keeping track of assignments, and use of token economies and other reward systems. Other valuable approaches such as self-monitoring and self-reinforcement, tutoring, summer school, and counseling receive insufficient attention. The most serious omission is the lack of emphasis on attentional problems in relation to academic deficits and the need to rule out learning problems as a part of making the diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Otherwise, the author offers excellent recommendations for parents on managing children's behavior and helping them with peer relationships.

AbstractNursing theories have been developed to provide guidance in clinical practice, so their knowledge by nurses is mandatory in order to provide advanced nursing care. This paper presents the relationships between the concepts and major assumptions of Henderson’s model and Orem’s theory and then their comparative analysis. Both, Henderson’s model and Orem’s theory of self-care deficit have a major impact, internationally, in education and research, but also in nursing practice, as a result of which their knowledge can open a new perspective on care, especially in countries where they are not well enough known.

Abstract:
People with mental disorders have difficulty to fulfill their needs. This can be caused by a decrease in the ability possessed by ODGJ. Decreased ability possessed by ODGJ can be the ability to care for themselves such as bathing, eating, dressing and making up themselves. Limit of the information and inability of the family will affect the actions taken on ODGJ for example in terms of fulfill their daily needs. The client's needs include physical and psychological needs, both of which need to be cared for and met according to portions. Meeting the physical needs of ODGJ needs to be considered because it will be directly proportional to the psychological fulfillment of the client, if not met then it can worsen the client's condition. The family's decision to apply pasung on the clients will affect the client's ability to care for himself. Writing this manuscript aims to see the condition of clients with self-care deficits who do not believe that self-care is very important in addition to other therapeutic measures related to mental health. This manuscript examines cognitive and behavioral therapy for self-care deficit cases. This method is carried out by reviewing journals related to the application of cognitive and behavioral therapies, self-care deficits and factors that can influence the outcome of the administration of therapy. The best experience can be obtained by the client if the client is directly involved in getting enough information about the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, knowing how to do it and being able to apply it to daily activities.

Abstract:
Given the growing concerns of problematic Internet use and online safety, it is critical to address parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Internet use and to examine associated factors, especially in parents of adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We examined the roles of adolescents’ hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms, parents’ depressive symptoms, parenting behavior (parental care and indifference), and child behavior (Internet addiction) in relation to parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Internet use. We recruited 237 Taiwanese parents of adolescents with ADHD (ages 11–18). Hierarchical linear regression was performed in four steps to test the study hypotheses. The results indicated that child’s age, ODD symptoms, and Internet addiction of adolescents were negatively associated, and parental care was positively associated with parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Internet use. The final model was significant and explained 43% of the variance. The present study demonstrated that parenting and child behaviors contribute to parental self-efficacy in managing adolescent Internet use. Moreover, children’s ODD symptoms were identified as the risk factor for reduced parental self-efficacy.

Abstract:
Background: This study sought to identify the nature and extent of diabetes-related knowledge and self-care practices in people living with type 2 diabetes who attend primary-care clinics and to determine whether a correlation between the two exists. Methods: In a nonexperimental prospective study, the Diabetes Knowledge Questionnaire and the Summary of Diabetes Self-care Activities were used to assess knowledge and self-management in 50 patients. Results: The mean diabetes knowledge score was 14.40 out of a total of 24 and the mean self-care activities score was 2.89 out of a total of 7, indicating a deficit in a number of key areas in the management of diabetes. There was no statistically significant correlation between diabetes knowledge score and diabetes self-care activities (r = 0.190, P = 0.187). On analysis of the individual subscales, a significant relationship resulted between diabetes knowledge score and diet (r = 0.324, P = 0.022) but physical activity (r = 0.179, P = 0.214), blood sugar testing (r = 0.231, P = 0.107) and footcare (r = 0.189, P = 0.189) gave no significant results. On further analysis, education level was significantly correlated to diabetes knowledge score (r = 0.374, P = 0.007) and self-care activities score (r = 0.317, P = 0.025) while age was significantly correlated to diabetes knowledge score (P = 0.008) and self-care activities score (P = 0.035). Conclusions: Integrating theories of behavior change into educational interventions at the primary-care level may translate to improved care, reduced long-term complications, and better quality of life.
