Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the effects the meeting culture in traditional projects has on the participants’ motivation. The meeting culture in traditional projects can differ in effectiveness since it is dependant on the project manager to arrange, hold and follow up the meeting. The empiric study was conducted in the form of qualitative interviews at the Swedish Defence Research Agency, FOI, and the motivation experienced by participants' was analysed by Self Determination Theory. The results from the interviews showed a demotivating experience in several situations, both regarding the meeting culture and how the meeting content was handled. The authors found that the motivation was affected by the agenda and purpose of the meeting, the attendence, time and form of the meeting and feedback. The results revealed that the examined meeting culture was unstructured which led to an emerging sub-meeting culture of an increasing number of smaller informal meetings. This in turn led to an experience of the work flow being disturbed and the interviewees feeling more stressed and less productive. Since agile project methodology is often regarded as motivating from several aspects, the authors conducted a discussion on how the implementation of agile meetings can be conducive to motivation in traditional project environments.

Full textAim of the study: The aim is to investigate consumers underlying motivation when they buy a house or a unit. This will be based on a survey and established theories of motivation such as Self Determination Theory. Method: We have used a quantitative method and the information was gathered from an electronic survey. Result & Conclusions: The statistical program SPSS was used to analyze the responses of the survey. To find the underlying correlations among the questions, we conducted a factor analysis. It resulted in 13 factors, which were narrowed down to 6 different types of consumers. Suggestions for future research: SDT can be used in different fields of consumer behaviour such as tourism and travelling, or to find out why we buy different types of goods. Contribution of the thesis: This thesis has contributed to the identification of the underlying motives behind buying a home. The study shows that SDT can be a suitable tool in marketing for future real estate agents.

Full textAccording to Self-determination Theory, people perform better when they experience inner motivation, rather than motivation sprung from external factors. This study aims to examine motivation in floorball coaches. Especially, reasons for starting to work as a coach are examined, as well as relationships between those reasons and the coaches experienced type of motivation. A web-survey was sent to 1059 floorball coaches in Sweden, wich were answered by 355 coaches. The results show 12 reasons why the coaches chose to commit themselves: Their own children, Sports interest, Contribute, Lack of coaches, Enjoyment, Their own development, A general interest, Leadership interest, Social connections, Asked to, Possessed expertise and A good cause. The results also showed that the coaches experienced inner motivation to the largest extent. Several relationships were shown between eight of the categories and the different types of motivation. Of those, the most distinct was the relationship between Contribute and self-determined motivation. This may be due to that the will to contribute can be related to the psychological need for relatedness. The study contributes to the knowledge of factors that may affect inner motivation in athletic coaches.

Full textThe first part of this review is regarding the lack of motivation amongst pupils in school. Bottom line in this review is about how motivation has an influence in the participation in the pupil’s education. Pervious research shows that motivation affects the participation in education. Previous research also showed that teachers have a responsibility to motivate pupils in school. The pupil’s motivation in education has a big influence of the participation in class. The purpose is to investigate which strategies teachers use to motivate pupils in mathematics and physical education. The review used the methods observations, structured interviews, notes and sound recording to answer the purpose and research questions. Self-determination theory has used a framework in the review. A selection has been done, from the collected material, which proved to be external motivation. The analyse shows that every type of external motivation was visible (external regulation, introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation) in education. The analyse section in the review, shows that teachers predomenantly, used motivation in different ways. External motivation been visibility the most in physical education class, than in lecture in math. The results have proved that all the types of external motivation were visible.

Full textSammanfattning

Full textWithin sports, leadership is considered having a great impact on individuals’ motivation. Leadership could, within a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) framework, be sorted into two different styles, autonomous and controlling leadership. There is a gap in current research concerning the effects of autonomous and controlling leadership on motivation in experimental settings. The aim of the present study was to, in an isolated environment, examine how an autonomy supportive- or a controlling leadership affects intrinsic motivation and performance. The study included 37 participants who, over a period of 20 minutes, performed a lego building task under a neutral, an autonomy supportive- or a controlling leadership style condition. The results indicated that the controlling leadership style had a negative impact on motivation and that the controlled group had lower perceived competence compared to the autonomous group. None of the leadership styles affected performance. Further, perceived motivation was found to significantly correlate with task.

Full textWhat affect the project participants’ motivation in projects that have a relatively long period of time set aside for implementation and with relatively large resources? An empirical case study was conducted to answer the question about motivation in long projects by using qualitative interviews of six project participants and one project manager in a company in the customs sector. These seven people were allocated to an IT development project. Herzberg´s two-factor theory was used to describe the factors that influenced the respondents’ motivation. There are mainly three types of events that affects the project participants’ motivation. These are events that can be linked to the project phase transitions, events related to project objectives and events about the project’s methodology. Finally, it can be stated that it is the contextual uncertainty that primarily affect the project participants’ motivation in a project going on for a long time. Thus the changes in the business environment between the time of the planning of the project and when the project objectives are evaluated.

Full textManufacturing companies have for a long time strived to achieve the highest efficiency in their production. This has been achieved by streamlining processes and minimizing process’ cost. The rationalization, along with psychology has had a work organizational focus over the years. Especially has a lot of theories concerning psychology in the workplace been developed. Earlier motivations theories saw extrinsic and intrinsic motivation as additive to each other. This means that a company's monetary reward system only cater to the external motivation to a certain point, then its up to the individual to meet the internal need of intrinsic motivation. In contrary to the earlier motivation theories, Self-determination theory sees an interaction between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, where the manager serve as a external motivator, who can influence the worker’s intrinsic motivation. Therefor lies the responsibility in the manager hands to ensure that motivations conditions exist and a continuous improvement process is going on within the company. If the managers fail in accomplishing this, it can often lead to unmotivated staff and poor efficiency. The manager is the one who’s faced with the task of promoting the workers intrinsic motivation, but the question remains how the managers should proceed. The study aims to analyse which behaviour a manager can adopt to meet the worker’s need for intrinsic motivation within a manufacturing company. To examine this, the study came to use a qualitative study method with an emphasis towards a deductive approach. It was interesting to analyse manufacturing companies with monotonous work. Four companies came to participate in the study, where differences in both production scale and production existed. Through interviews with managers and workers the study could deduce a correlation on a specific behaviour and analyse it to answer the purpose of the study. The study found that coveted behaviour that managers could adopt to promote intrinsic motivation among the workers is, engagement in the workplace and the manufacturing process that is executed by the workers, and therefore see the individual in the process of the production. This is done with appreciation and encouragement for participation by including suggestion system in the company and ensures that suggestions are continuous.

Full textThe need related behavioral dynamics that are revealed in self-determination and academic motivation research control factors which pinpoint and examine settings that facilitate self-motivation and well-being. This study examined differences in motivational and self-determination behaviors among three ethnic groups of Nigerian university students using a sample of students attending the University of Ibadan. The research continues the dialogue of the role of ethnicity in the motivational and self-determination behaviors by focusing on Nigerian students. Lastly, the study expands the current literature on motivation and self-determination by adding a study focusing on Nigerian students. Twenty-one hypotheses were tested to answer five research questions in the study. The research questions addressed whether significant statistical differences existed in academic motivation scores of Nigerian students based on their ethnicities or whether the parents' level of education affected the students' motivation, or self-determination. The questions also explored any statistical differences in self-determination of students based on their ethnicities or if there were differences between self-determination and gender, scholarship status, or number of children. Lastly, the questions addressed if there were differences in the type of prerequisites for entry to University of Ibadan. There were no statistically significant differences in means of the three broad types of academic motivation and perceived choice scores on the SDS based on ethnicity, parents' level of education, gender, scholarship status, number of children each participant had, and the kind of entry examinations that were taken. There were statistically significant differences in the mean of awareness of self scores based on parents' level of education and scholarship status. There was also a statistically significant difference in the mean perceived choice scores on the SDS based on the number of children each participant had. There were no statistically significant differences based on students' prerequisites.

Full textThis exploratory study examined of the relationship between employee motivation orientations and leader behaviors through Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the Worthy Leadership Model (WL). Leader Member Exchange theory (LMX) and SDT provide theoretical support for the present study. Structural equation modeling (SEM) provides correlations on a direct path analysis between the SDT constructs of intrinsic, identified, introjected and external motivation regulations and the WL constructs of capacity, character and commitment to lead. Results indicated when the leader’s capacity, commitment, and character to lead increased the degree of participant intrinsic, identified and introjected motivation decreased. The results also found that external motivation was insignificant with WL constructs. The impact of multicollinearity and suggestions for future research are included.

Full textThe purpose of the study was to investigate whether norms and motivation can be perceived as having an impact on counterproductive work behaviour among environmental workers. The term environmental workers comprise different types of cleaning workers. The respondents were chosen after they themselves declared an interest in participating in the study. The following study consisted of an inductive and qualitative research process and were conducted with the help of telephone interviews. The interviews were analysed through a thematic analysis. The result showed that the individual's level of motivation can be perceived to have an influence on the individual tendency to act on the basis of counter-productive behaviour. Similarly, norms can be perceived as support for counter-productive behaviour. Based on the respondents' statements, internal motivation factors are considered to be of crucial importance in the question of the tendency regarding counterproductive work behaviour among environmental workers.

Full textThe aim of the study is to explore and compare the ways in which violin pupils experience motivation and how different forms of motivation determinates motivation to practice and to continue playing the violin. The study has two research questions: How do violin teachers experience that they promote student´s motivation to practice violin? How do violin teachers think their students are motivated to continue playing the violin? The theoretical foundation is Self Determination Theory concerning motivation and practicing. The research method is semistructured interviews and three violin teachers have been interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and processed using thematic analysis and the results presents the phenomenon of motivation. The results are divided into three themes: The teachers encounter with the pupil, The teachers view of how to stimulate pupils to practice and The environments effect on the motivation of the pupil. The result is discussed in relation to former research and the theoretical perspectives of the study in the final chapter of the study.
