A Disclosure Decision model is introduced that specifies a cognitive process resulting in decisions that affect the content, depth, breadth, and duration of self-disclosure. Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the transnational aspects of identity and the long distance belonging of Latvian migrants in Great Britain. In particular, it focuses on the discourses and practices of long distance belonging to Latvia. The article is based on a comparative analysis of The Emigrant Communities of Latvia survey data as well as semi-structured interviews with Latvian migrants in Great Britain. The analytical sections are organised so as to discuss the three main analytical contexts of long distance belonging: ethno-cultural, political and social. In the ethno-cultural context, migrants who identify themselves as ethnic Latvians rediscover and strengthen their links to the Latvian cultural space, its traditions and its ways of collective self-understanding. Conversely, the absence of this cultural capital among Russian-speaking migrants from Latvia advances their faster assimilation into British society. The political context of long distance belonging reveals high levels of distrust of the Latvian government and the migrants’ overall disappointment with Latvia’s political elite, as well as political apathy. Nevertheless, Latvian migrants in the United Kingdom are discovering new motivation and fresh opportunities to influence the political reality in Latvia and that has increased participation in Latvian national elections. The social context of long distance belonging, in turn, enables new forms of allegiance towards Latvia. These are manifested in philanthropic initiatives, in participation in various interest groups and in regular interest in what is happening in Latvia. The social context does not put the migrants’ activities into ethno-cultural or political frameworks, but encourages moral responsibility towards the people of Latvia.

AbstractThis chapter makes a literature review based on the Grant and Booth qualitative systematic methodology of the studies about the educational situation of the Roma in Spain, with an wider, extended scope that allows to compare the findings with those conducted on other countries’ Roma populations. Studies on the Roma educational situation in Spain are hindered by the lack of official, periodical statistics, having to rely on sample-based surveys and ethnographic studies. In spite of the inaccuracy of the studies all of them show, as a general picture, a staggering educational gap between the Roma and the rest of society which is common to all Western countries. Most of the studies on Roma education have concentrated in this negative aspect. Numerous theoretical frameworks have been developed to explain this staggering education gap. All them acknowledge the phenomenon as a multidimensional one but for heuristic purposes they can be ordered along an endogenous/exogenous factors continuum depending on how much they stress the weight of factors stemming from characteristics of the Roma ethnic group itself or, on the contrary, of the majority non-Roma society. The literature review has also identified an emergent critical current that sees this studies focused on educational underachievement as a sharing a common essentialist bias that helps to reinforce the stigmatization of Roma and have turned to focus, instead, on the study of academic success among the Roma. Although this emerging field is very promising, our review has identify several significant research gaps in this regard: a lack of longitudinal studies, a lack of studies on the Roma upper and middle classes and a lack of studies on Roma students in post-compulsory education, particularly the university level. This article encourages researchers to fill this gaps with the conviction that the knowledge obtained can help combat the negative stereotypes and the self-fulfilling prophecy effect that approaches focused on Roma underachievement may have.

The environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosure performance of the companies is becoming a major criterion for significant stakeholders like shareholders, creditors, and customers. In line with the increasing interest in ESG activities, a growing respective literature emerges. Despite this evolving attraction, the ESG aspects of the transport industry in general, and the rail industry in particular remain relatively untouched except for a small body of research on airlines. This study aims at filling this gap by analyzing how the ESG disclosure performance of the rail companies affect their financial performance, which the authors measure by return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and Tobin's Q. Based on a sample of 35 rail companies from nine countries over the 2007-2017 period, the analyses show that ESG disclosure performance has a positive and statistically significant association with the ROA of the rail companies.

This chapter presents an overview of the September 2014 controversy surrounding Facebook's enforcement of their “real name policy,” the disproportionate targeting of drag performers for profile suspension, and the queer community's brief exodus to the network Ello. By drawing on research about identity in the online age, queer and subcultural theory, and the concept of affordances in social media, the author seeks to illuminate some of the causes of this incident, and the motivations of the actors involved. The online profile is framed as a locus for the construction of alternative identities—particularly those which challenge gender norms—as well as tension when that process is restricted. The author attempts to locate this concept of profiles, and the networked communities built from them, within a larger web of capital relations, exploring how the online and offline intersect therein.

Chapter 4 investigates how emotion regulation is a socially constructed, culturally influenced phenomenon. Investigating emotion regulation through a cultural lens provides a viable framework to differentiate social norms according to a larger social context. In Western cultures fostering autonomy and cultivating a positive personal self-concept is important for emotion regulation. In contrast, in non-Western cultures achieving harmony among relationships is the primary goal of emotion regulation. Cross-cultural research has determined both similarities and differences. Accordingly, empirical findings suggest emotion expression is common in Western cultures, whereas, suppression is common among Asian cultures. Relatedly, the same regulatory strategies have divergent effects in different cultures. Research has demonstrated the association between suppression and psychopathology in Western cultures; however, emotional suppression has been associated with positive health outcomes in East Asian cultures. Yet, cultures are often heterogeneous in nature, supporting both autonomy and harmony; thus, future research should consider intra-cultural differences more closely.

As young people are increasingly dependent on Social Networking sites (SNS) to socialize, seek information, and self-broadcast, their SNS consumption has been found to be associated with social capital and social support in a positive way especially among individuals with low psychological assets. This exploratory study investigated SNS involvement in relation to college students' perceived self-efficacy change afterwards based on the social cognitive theory and literature review on social media effects studies. Undergraduate students (N = 395) in a Midwest U.S. public university participated in a web survey in September 2012. Results indicated a positive potential of involving in SNS activities to strengthen users' self-efficacy. Research data also point to the mediating roles of social support and social learning on SNS involvement and self-efficacy, especially among low self-efficacy college students with homogenous SNS networks. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Privacy is one of the most essential topics to be investigated when assessing user acceptance of new applications and services enabling disclosure of personal information. Mobility increases the demand on taking privacy into consideration when designing and developing these kinds of systems. This chapter presents a privacy management model, which facilitates evaluation of privacy aspects of communication technology. The applicability of the model is tested in a field trial that was carried out to assess user acceptance of a mobile social awareness system.
