It is ultimately argued that while self-deception as described in Chapters 3 and 4 cannot be implicated in his argument, a nearby kind of practical-epistemic failing, namely dissemblance or dissimulation (Verstellen), can be. To help secure this conclusion, the chapter also addresses several important interpretive challenges including: whether Kant intends his claims about a universal evil to be a priori or empirically grounded; whe

This means that we can apprehend sex philosophically (and philosophy sexually). This essay understands sex, following Jean-Luc Nancy, as an invitation to unknow, to let go of the sovereignty we h

Our identity as a human person is a narrative identity that stems from the dialectics between what we are and the alterity that we encounter in our life. In this chapter the author defends a novel view of the relationships among intention for the future, self-control, and cooperation. The author argues that when an agent forms an intention for the future she comes to regard herself as criticizable if she does not act in accordance with her intention. In contexts where the agent has inclinations that run contrary to her unrescinded intention, her disposition for reflexive criticism helps her to resist these inclinations. Such intentions have, the author argues, a built-in mechanism for exercising self-control. The author goes on to argue that this mechanism can also function as a mechanism for cooperative behavior. Agents are not just equipped to abide by plans for the future, they are also thereby equipped for exercising self-control and for cooperating.

The purpose of the chapter was to establish the effect of disposition on investment decision making in property market in Plateau State, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was used in the study. Primary data was collected using standard questionnaires with both closed and open-ended questions. The regression analysis results confirmed that there was a significant positive linear relationship between disposition and investor investment decision making in property market in Plateau State in Nigeria. The study concluded that disposition effects bias does not alter rationality in investment decision making. Disposition affected investment decisions. The main recommendation for investors is to make constant attempts to increase their awareness on behavioral finance by educating themselves on the field. Abstract:
This chapter gives a rigorous account of self-cultivation and argues that it is a virtue. Self-cultivation, it claims, is the following: the disposition to engage in those actions and have those affective responses that develop one’s abilities and character traits, when appropriate, because one values growth for its own sake, with pleasure and from an undivided motivational state. To show that self-cultivation, so conceived, is a virtue, the chapter argues that such a character trait is both useful and immediately agreeable, both to oneself and to others. The argument draws on research from psychology, as well as more traditional appeals to our own moral experience and to our reactions to characters from literature.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at original surveys of sixty-eight presidential historians on the president each had studied in depth. The historians’ survey suggests that American presidents exhibit variation in their self-monitoring dispositions. The chapter then leverages this variation to test statistically whether US presidents’ behavior during international crises is consistent with the expectations of the theory presented in this book. The self-monitoring disposition of a US president is a significant predictor of his likelihood of employing and initiating military instruments to demonstrate resolve during international conflict. Low self-monitor presidents not only engage in less militarized interstate disputes, but they are also significantly less likely to initiate such disputes, compared to high self-monitor presidents. The chapter also presents findings indicating that high self-monitor presidents are more likely to prevail in militarized interstate disputes compared to their low self-monitor counterparts.

This chapter begins with the observation that there is something about a virtue of self-cultivation that is, in Christine Swanton’s apt phrase, “seemingly paradoxical.” This seeming paradox calls for an explanation, and in this chapter, I take on this explanatory task. That is, I show as clearly as possible why it might seem paradoxical, or even impossible, to recognize a virtue concerned with self-improvement, and I argue that, nonetheless, this seeming is a mere seeming. The key issue for the neo-Aristotelian, I argue, is whether a disposition to self-cultivation can be an excellence for human beings. And, contrary to appearances, it can. Thus, there can be such a virtue after all.

This chapter advocates for the (re)framing of critical thinking from a skill to a disposition and proposes a framework whereby teacher education programs can create space for pre-service teachers to develop a critical disposition. By studying the context of American education and schooling and their corporate interest, pre-service teachers along with teacher educators can start to unravel the discourse and power inherent in American education. Understanding how these concepts lead to hegemony can begin the process of creating a counterhegemonic movement among American educators that includes the reclaiming of the purpose of education, raising pertinent epistemological question, and practicing critical self-reflection. The final part of the new framework for developing critical dispositions is a reintroduction of broader theoretical concerns into teacher preparation programs.
