Abstract:
Charles Taylor claims that ‘… human life is constituted by self-understanding,’ a self-understanding which is achieved in part by our capacity to use language (9). Because of this, the philosophy of language is important in Taylor’s philosophical views and central to these are his views on expression. I shall argue that one way to understand Taylor’s theory of expression is to place it within a theory of speech acts. And I shall try to show that this gives us a way to interpret his contention that expression is a subject-related property and that there cannot be an objective science of it. Fin

Facial expression recognition (FER) is a challenging problem due to the intra-class variation caused by subject identities. In this paper, a self-difference convolutional network (SD-CNN) is proposed to address the intra-class variation issue in FER. First, the SD-CNN uses a conditional generative adversarial network to generate the six typical facial expressions for the same subject in the testing image. Second, six compact and light-weighted difference-based CNNs, called DiffNets, are designed for classifying facial expressions. Each DiffNet extracts a pair of deep features from the testing

The paper proposes a reconsideration of the issue by drawing the attention to the discursive and material techniques of recording the empirical subject in poetic texts. Abstract Abstract 5 Background: Hemophilia B (HB), an X-linked bleeding disorder, is ideally suited for gene therapy. We investigated a novel approach using peripheral vein infusion of a single dose of a serotype-8 pseudotyped self-complementary adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector expressing a codon-optimized coagulation factor IX (FIX) transgene (scAAV2/8-LP1-hFIXco). Methods: Six severe HB subjects (FIX ≤1%) were enrolled sequentially into one of three dose cohorts with two subjects in each group. Vector was administered without immunosuppression. The subjects were followed for 6–16 months p

Abstract Lived relationships with the past together with active practices of memorialization and remembering pervade the values of Te Ao Māori (Māori World). As Te Awekotuku teaches us with the example of traditional tattoo practices for the kiri tuhi (body) and tā moko (face), for Māori “wearing ink” is about memory, as it “claims dominion and understanding across generations, across time, across space. Across lives.” As visual representations of life, life journey, kinship, and death, moko has been described as a “technology of memory” and taonga tuku iho (a gift from the ancestors). From a

This article provides an overview of how aesthetics is treated in the current Finnish basic education core curriculum document. Relatively little research has been conducted on aesthetics in Finnish curricula, particularly from an interdisciplinary approach. In the broader picture, the position of aesthetics and the appreciation of arts subjects in curricula has paradoxically weakened globally over recent decades, particularly in English-speaking cultures. At the same time, the significance of aesthetics has increased in postmodern culture with, for instance, increasingly more commercial brand

Abstract Recent genetic analyses have demonstrated that self-incompatibility in flowering plants derives from the coordinated expression of a system of loci. To address the selective mechanisms through which a genetic system of this kind evolves, I present a three-locus model for the origin of gametophytic self-incompatibility. Conventional models assume that a single locus encodes all physiological effects associated with self-incompatibility and that the viability of offspring depends only on whether they were derived by selfing or outcrossing. My model explicitly represents the genetic dete

This produces a break in the passions that aim at self-preservation, in order to incorporate the intersubjective dimension in one’s own affectivity. Second, I examine the other as useful, which emerges from the rational understanding that another human being living according to the guidance of reason is most beneficial fo
