This article presents the entrepreneur biography of an Italian pioneer in the field of tourism: Lorenzo Bertolini. His experience is of particular interest for two reasons. Firstly, he contributed to spread the culture of hospitality and to shape new organizational and managerial models for luxury hotels. Secondly, he was a successful businessman: a self-made man capable to build the initial core of a hotel chain that his sons further developed successfully. Despite a reorganization in the following period, Bertolini’s descendants still operate in the field of luxury hotels, and thus rep

After a failed attempt to donate his collection to the Art Institute of Chicago, Terra created not one, but two museums in Illinois and one in France over the course of twelve years. Each Terra-ba

Richard Boyle, first earl of Cork, was a most unlikely antiquarian. A self-made man and a ruthless politician, by the early 1630s he had become the richest landowner in Munster and was entertaining ambitions to rule Ireland as Lord deputy. Yet in the same period the ‘great earl’ spent much time and effort sifting the archives for genealogical information about one of the most ancient noble houses of Ireland — the Fitzgeralds, earls of Kildare and Desmond. In 1627 Cork paid for repairs to the ‘pedigree box’ he kept in his study at Youghal, and it was soon put to good use. In 1632 Cork ‘and … ot

Opening ParagraphThe unexpected death of a citizen in 1977 triggered a series of events in one small Ghanaian kingdom, pointing to confusion in the locally accepted criteria for Christian conversion and to contradictions in the avenues to status and power. Since the deceased was a millionaire businessman, something of a huckster, and a person who was at the centre of an unusually complex constellation of social ties, his death forced the people of his local community to re-examine the relationships between traditional religion and Christianity, and between wealth, religious adherence and the d

Similarly, according to rational choice theory, capitalist economy is driven by individual self-interest and works best when individual buyers and sellers make rational decisions that serve their own interests. In contrast to this atomized economic approach of David Ricardo, Adam Smith and others, this research paper entitled ‘market and social embeddedness’ applies Granovetter’s ideas of ‘social embedde

This chapter talks about Reinaldo Scarpetta who argued that managers were the men called to tackle the wide-ranging problems of postwar societies. Managerial knowledge had come into the world a creature of the modern corporation, shaped to its requirements, but it now stood as a universal technique, its applications limitless. Government itself, Scarpetta declared, was simply “people managing public affairs.” Scarpetta's portrait of his own time occluded a long history of businessmen and economists comparing the capitalist firm to the state, management to government.
