Abstract:
Self-neglect is the individual's failure to show the necessary attention and care in his own care. Self-neglect manifests itself as non-adherence to treatment, failure to maintain personal and environmental hygiene, and maladaptive health behaviours. At the global level, although self-neglect is frequently seen especially in the elderly population, it is seen in all age groups and especially in disease groups where disability is in question and their caregivers. Self-neglect, which is divided into two categories as intentional and unintentional, is an important cause of morbidity and mortality

Self-neglect in old age is complex, challenging, and likely to increase in the future. Self-neglect is characterized as the behavior of an elderly person that threatens his or her own safety. Self-neglect is the most common form of abuse and neglect reported to Adult Protective Services in the United States (see Teaster, 2000). Self-neglect is also associated with a significantly increased mortality in victims (Dong et al., 2009). Self-neglect has become a significant public health problem affecting not just the victims but also family members, friends, and frequently the community at large. C

Abstract Self-neglect is generally considered a geriatric phenomenon and subsumed within the category of elder abuse and neglect. In the U.S., self-neglect is the most commonly reported form of elder abuse and neglect and has been linked to decreased physical and psychological well-being, higher mortality rate, and increase health care services utilization. While self-neglect typically falls under the purview of a state’s adult protective service (APS) system, there are several states where this is not codified and/or practiced.
