In 1986 Polyakov published his theory of rigid string. I investigate the instantons associated with the consequent new fine structure of strings in four dimensional Euclidean space-time. I reduce the self-dual equation of rigid string instantons to a simple form and show that (p,q) torus knots satisfy the equation, thus forming an interesting new class of solutions. I calculate by computer the world-sheet self-intersection number of the first few such closed knotted strings and derive a very simple formula for the self-intersection number of a torus knot. In his article 'The Death of the Author', Roland Barthes posits that the intentions and identity of an author are irrelevant to the understanding of an artwork. Yet in his analysis of a text by Balzac, Barthes inadvertently demonstrates that there are basic thematic categories associated with an artist's identity, which are intrinsic to a work's interpretation. This thesis proposes that the author of an artwork functions as a semiotic curator, collating signifiers from within these external categories in order to reflect their understanding of the world. In this thesis I present a novel coarse-grained model of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The model represents single-stranded DNA as a chain of rigid nucleotides, and includes potentials to represent chain connectivity, excluded volume, hydrogen-bonding and base stacking interactions. The parameterization of these interactions is justified by comparing the model's representation of a range of physical phenomena to experimental data. The self-assembly of structured particles into monodisperse clusters is a challenge on the nano-, micro- and even macro-scale. While biological systems are able to self-assemble with comparative ease, many aspects of this self-assembly are not fully understood. In this thesis, we look at the strategies and rules that can be applied to encourage the formation of monodisperse clusters. Though much of the inspiration is biological in nature, the simulations use a simple minimal patchy particle model and are thus applicable to a wide range of systems.
