In this thesis, we study self-organized flocking using a swarm of mobile robots. We first present a mobile robot platform having two novel sensing systems developed specifically for swarm robotic studies. In particular, we describe a novel sensing system called the virtual heading sensor (VHS), which combines a digital compass and a wireless communication module to form a scalable method for sensing the relative headings of neighboring robots. Abstract:
The self-organized nest construction behaviors of European paper wasps (Polistes dominula) show potential for adoption in artificial intelligence and robotic systems where centralized control proves challenging. However, P. dominula nest construction mechanisms are not fully understood. This research investigated how nest structures stimulate P. dominula worker action at different stages of nest construction. A novel stochastic site selection model, weighted by simple rules for cell age, height, and wall count, was implemented in a three-dimensional, step-by-step nest construction simulation.

89
The adjustment of the premise and consequent part of fuzzy if-then rules is the most important issue in fuzzy learning problem. This thesis presents a method combing self-organization and least square estimation to automatically adjust the parameters of a fuzzy system from training pattern. In chapter 2, we perform this method by using a feed-forward Tagagi-Sugeno-type fuzzy network on a typical plant of an inverted pendulum, and demonstrate the better convergent rate and average learning error when compared with some other traditional networks. In chapter 3, the

Abstract:
Life presents fascinating examples of self-organization and emergent phenomena. In multi-cellular organisms, a multitude of cells interact to form and maintain highly complex body plans. This requires reliable communication between cells on various length scales. First, there has to be the right number of cells to preserve the integrity of the body and its size. Second, there have to be the right types of cells at the right positions to result in a functional body layout. In this thesis, we investigate theoretical feedback mechanisms for both self-organized body plan patterning and size contro
