Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter presents the state of the art focusing on the so-called teachers with “migration background” in Germany. Applying the method of the literature review, we summarize current and emerging research trends as well as understudied areas in Germany. The chapter provides the reader with a critical survey of the extensive literature produced in the past decade and a synthesis of current thinking on the topic at hand across disciplines and methodological approaches. The chapter opens up with a concise presentation of the context, objectives and the methodology of the study. These are followed by a critical synopsis of the findings and a closing conclusion. The results of the analysis reveal that a vast amount of research is focusing on the three following domains: Ascriptions and (Self-)perception of minority teachers’ role in education such as the responsibility of fostering the linguistic diversity) Minority teachers’ role for students and students’ own perspectives, e.g. the importance of the multilingual teachers for self-positioning of the students as migration-related multilinguals; as well as professional integration of minority teachers including access to the labour market and teacher education revealing an underrepresentation of minority teachers in schools. In the conclusion we point out new perspectives and areas in need of further research, such as the demand for new approaches on how to constructively include migration-related multilingualism in the course of teacher education.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter begins by considering the dominant affective state that came into being after the election of Trump in 2016, namely shock and disbelief, and contextualizes it through two opposed yet complementary impulses. First, it illustrates how political and cultural derealization was actively promoted by Trump himself and his administration, to then consider the liberal biases that were already implicit in the widespread perception that reality was collapsing. In the context of the emergence of two and seemingly irreconcilable American realities, ever more polarized along partisan lines, the literary world felt compelled to respond and did so publicly. This chapter considers various initiatives but focuses in particular on the insights provided by writers Aleksandar Hemon, Jan Clausen, and Viet Thanh Nguyen, who denounced the exceptionalist rhetoric that was often employed and called for a more engaged and less self-deluded American literature. It then proceeds to map the emerging corpus of ‘Trump fiction’ and existing scholarly studies, and argues that the analyses offered in American Literature in the Era of Trumpism contribute not only to the continued understanding of the landscape of American literature after 2016, but also to the long-standing scholarly tradition of decentering the notion of ‘America.’

Abstract:
AbstractStudent perceptions of teaching are promising for measuring the quality of teaching in primary and secondary education. However, generating valid and reliable measurements when using a student perception questionnaire (SPQ) is not self-evident. Many authors have pointed to issues that need to be taken into account when developing, selecting, and using an SPQ in order to generate valid and reliable scores. In this study, 22 SPQs that met the inclusion criteria used in the literature search were systematically evaluated by two reviewers. The reviewers were most positive about the theoretical basis of the SPQs and about the quality of the SPQ materials. According to their evaluation, most SPQs also had acceptable reliability and construct validity. However, norm information about the quality rating measures was often lacking and few sampling specifications were provided. Information about the features of the SPQs, if available, was also often not presented in an accessible way by the instrument developers (e.g., in a user manual), making it difficult for potential SPQ users to obtain an overview of the qualities of available SPQs in order to decide which SPQs best fit their own context and intended use. It is suggested to create an international database of SPQs and to develop a standardized evaluation framework to evaluate the SPQ qualities in order to provide potential users with the information they need to make a well-informed choice of an SPQ.

AbstractThis chapter addresses the professional identity of the contemporary art museum conservator. It departs from a general review of the literature about the professional role of the conservator to focus on how practitioners see themselves in their profession when it comes to their values, beliefs, the functions performed and perceived relationships with colleagues. I also discuss how conservators think they are seen by others (colleagues or the anonymous public). Aware of the complexity of relationships that shape the contemporary art museum, this chapter focuses specifically on the identity of conservation professionals and their reported invisibility to colleagues and the public. I argue that while some of the factors that negatively influence a conservator’s self-perception come from beliefs and stereotypes formed along with the construction of professional identity, others are consolidated and perpetuated in the context of the museum, where these identities do not seem to have room for transformation or renegotiation, through professional agency.

Abstract:
Perception of mattering, defined as individual’s feeling of being important for others (Rosenberg and McCullogh 1981), is a construct which in the recent years has received an increasing amount of attention as a factor able to improve people well-being. Individual well-being has been defined in different ways: hedonic as satisfaction with life (Diener and Lucas 1999), eudaimonic that is the feeling of realization of the proper true self (Ryff 1995), and holistic, namely the satisfaction toward different life domains (Prilleltensky et al. 2015). Given the various definitions, it was necessary to systematize this literature in order to clarify if perceived mattering is linked to well-being independently of the perspective adopted by researchers to conceptualize this construct. Therefore, a systematic review, following the PRISMA statement, was conducted. The final number of included studies was 39 (22 hedonic, 9 eudaimonic and 9 holistic well-being). Almost all the studies reported a positive association between mattering and well-being except for some differences due to participants’ gender or cultural background. Results indicated the positive role of mattering in promoting well-being independently from the conceptualization adopted.

Abstract:
People who live with stomas suffer impacts in the adaptation process, especially in their reintegration into society. In addition to bodily changes, ostomies can also cause emotional, social, and spiritual imbalances. This is a literature review that aimed to analyze the repercussions identified in the literature related to the perception of ostomy patients on their self-esteem and self-image. Self-esteem involves the perception of body image and senses, the figurations, and mental representations that a person has of others and of himself. The need for an ostomy causes a series of changes in the patients' self-image, also causing changes in the feeling of self-esteem. In addition, it triggers feelings such as fear, anguish, insecurity, suffering, shame, apprehension, isolation, loss of autonomy, among others. The evaluation of the self-esteem of ostomized individuals is necessary because the patients go through a sudden change in their standard of living, making it essential for the health team involved in the rehabilitation and coping with this new reality, providing a more natural transition possible.

Abstract The Introduction to Part II draws an analogy between the conceptual structures of the Homeric heroic ideal and the ideology of Athenian autochthony: just as Achilles’ indexical essentialism emerges in the Iliad to be synonymous with the ideal of unfailing intentionality, so the Athenian citizens’ postulated identity with their native soil, too, forms the basis of their self-perception as a polity superior to all other Greek states. The Introduction further explains that the goal of Chapters 3 and 4 consists in establishing a link between the ideology of Athenian exceptionalism and what can be termed as Plato’s “ideal state of philosophy.”

Abstract Tracing nineteenth-century scientific interest in the epistemology and phenomenology of the auditory sense, its variable scales and potential enhancement via sense engineering technologies, this chapter intervenes in the study of literature and the senses on several connected levels. Probing literary resonances of the new techniques for capturing and transporting sounds, the chapter focuses on nineteenth-century literary texts’ pronounced awareness of their own mediality and performativity. Such textual self-reflexivity becomes manifest in some central phenomena recurring throughout nineteenth-century literary explorations of the auditory sense: unlocatable sound; hypersensitivity to sound; and the inescapability of sound. Moreover, the chapter argues that besides these scientific and aesthetic dimensions of textually mediated sensory perception, we have to assess its political dimension: nineteenth-century literary evocations of the sense of hearing always also negotiate shifts in gender, class, and ethnic relations, producing new vocalities as well as imperial echo chambers.

Abstract The beach intensifies multisensorial bodily perception, as it touches, stimulates, and invades the human body through various material channels. Literary texts record a ‘thick description’ of the sensory and emotional experience of, for example, swimming; and they explore the ambivalence of the beach, the persistence of conflicting patterns such as sensuous liberation and a dread of the deep. The two novels this chapter examines—Kate Chopin’s The Awakening and Charles Simmons’s Salt Water—although separated by a century, address similar issues. Both are set at moments of social change, have liminal protagonists, and use littoral activities as conduits to sexual awakening, liberation, and self-knowledge. However, they also show that these positive developments are not viable outside the heterotopia of the beach. Drawing on littoral/oceanic studies and new materialism, this chapter focuses on the interplay between the material environment, the senses, and the emotional development of the novels’ protagonists.

In order to improve students' learning outcomes, researchers and practitioners have increasingly applied gamification in technology-enhanced learning environments. However, some studies in the literature have reported unexpected negative results with that. To avoid these unexpected outcomes in gamified learning systems, we proposed the ``gamification analytics model for teachers" in a previous study. This model allows teachers to monitor and adapt the gamification design in the run-time of the teaching-learning process. In this paper, we present the results obtained in an empirical study to as
