Abstract:
SummaryAim – The widespread diffusion of sleep disorders (in particular, insomnia) in the general population and the presence of sleep complaints in many mental disorders and physical illnesses justifies an interest in their assessment and treatment, still today commonly underestimated. This study aims to describe the inexpensive and relatively easy-to-use self-report measures of sleep available in literature. Method – A literature search was conducted throughout the electronic literature database “Pubmed”, selecting the pertinent articles published up to December 2006. Results – The recovered material takes the following fields into account: aspect of sleep measured, statistical population, structure, time frame, sub-scales and psychometric properties. International literature presents somewhat heterogeneous sleep self-evaluation tools, which mainly measure sleep quality and the specific causes of sleep interference. As for the Italian context, the recovered material is somewhat modest, taking into account the number of publications. Conclusions – the critical points met in this review have led us to underline the characteristics of a hypothetical tool for sleep assessment to include in routine diagnoses.Declaration of Interest: The authors have received no fees or other financial support potentially in conflict of interest with this scientific work.

Abstract:
To maximize student learning, teachers intentionally exhibit certain behaviors to build interpersonal relationships with students. One of the behaviors that teachers incorporate in their teaching to clarify and improve students’ understanding of the course content is self-disclosure. However, when it is used inappropriately, it may damage student learning opportunities. Thus, the purpose of this research was to establish the state of the art on teacher self-disclosure through a systematic review of the existing literature, establishing itseffect on the teaching-learning process. A bibliographic search was carried out in different national and international databases, selecting 39 scientific articles for the revision, published between 1982 and 2019, that met the established inclusion criteria. Regarding the effect of teacher self-disclosure on the teaching-learning process, 6 categories weredetermined: cognitive learning, affective learning, academic motivation, participation and interest, teacher-student out-of-class communication and perceptions and evaluations of the teacher, including in each of them the main results of the articles included in the analysis. Based on the obtained results, it is highlighted the need that, in order to promote student learning, teacher self-disclosure must be moderate, relevant and positive.

The following review article brings a presentation of the published in 2018 encyclopaedia of Czech literary samizdat. The analysed publication consists of two parts – a comprehensive introduction discussing the question of independent literary culture in Czechoslovakia under communist regime pressure and an entry section with more than 300 entries about Czech independent self-publishing activities. The presentation of the following book provokes the need to re-examine the phenomenon of Czech samizdat, reflecting on its chronological framework, definition, meaning and role in creating and keeping alive an independent culture in the era of domination of the communist regime (1948–1989).

Abstract:
This study evaluated the impact of virtual technology on teacher candidates’ self-efficacy. Teacher self-efficacy based on empirical validity in face-to-face environments remains continuously, while it is a new concept in an online education environment. The following literature review conducted among different academic electronic databases and examined the 15 years passed published work. The literature review explores three major areas of research in online education about technology on teacher candidates’ self-efficacy. (1) self-efficacy of pre-service teachers by adopting virtual technology (2) association between teaching self-efficacy and virtual technology (3) changes in self-efficacy of a teacher before and after a professional development with the help of virtual technology. The study described that different researchers continuously examine the balance between pedagogical and technological knowledge that supports the professional development of pre-service teacher self- efficacy with the help of virtual technology, whether teacher self-efficacy differs in online education as compared to face-to-face education.

AbstractPurposeTo identify from the literature, and to critically evaluate, all validated instruments currently available to measure self-harming behaviour in adults.Materials and methodsMedline, Embase, PsycInfo, Health and Psychosocial Instruments and Google scholar were searched, grey literature was sought and the reference lists of relevant articles were checked to identify instruments.ResultsA total of seven validated instruments which met our inclusion criteria were identified and data were extracted regarding each instrument's format, administration method, psychometric properties and number of items and domains included. Considerable variation was observed in the overall quality of these instruments. Fourteen other instruments were identified which did not describe their psychometric properties or had not been published and were subsequently excluded from our review.DiscussionAlthough many instruments were identified in our search, only a small number had been validated with published psychometric properties. Of the identified instruments, the Suicide Attempt Self-Injury Interview (SASII) appears to be the most robust and comprehensive instrument currently available. Despite the absence of psychometric data, numerous other instruments have been used in published studies, including clinical trials.ConclusionOur results highlight the pressing need for a standardized, empirically validated and versatile measure of intentional self-harming behaviour for use in both clinical and research settings. The optimum characteristics of such an instrument are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disabling musculoskeletal condition among the elderly. Self-reported instability is one of the impairments associated with osteoarthritis. A complete understanding of the self-reported instability in knee OA is essential, to identify the best strategies for overcoming this impairment. The focus of this scoping review is to provide an overview of evidence supported information about the prevalence and other associated features of selfreported instability in Knee OA. A broad search of the database PubMed with keywords such as knee osteoarthritis and instability resulted in 1075 articles. After title abstract and full-text screening, 19 relevant articles are described in the review. Overall, there is less amount of published literature on this topic. Studies reported prevalence rates of more than 60% for self-reported instability in knee osteoarthritis, which causes functional deterioration and high fear of falls. The most probable causative factors for self-reported instability in knee OA were altered sensory mechanisms and decreased muscle strength. Conclusion: To conclude, self-reported knee instability in knee OA requires thorough evaluation and directed treatment with further studies providing rationalistic evidence-based management strategies. The current literature regarding self-reported knee instability is summarized, highlighting the research gaps.

Abstract:
Objective: To learn about the experiences of adolescents diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. Method: Integrative review of the literature published within a specified time frame. Results: For both sexes, the predominant clinical symptom of this condition appears to be the negative effect that the deformity exerts on perceived self-image. Quantitative studies used numerical scores to assess perceptions of body image but did not analyse emotional aspects. Patients treated surgically were found to have a better self-image than patients treated with a brace. Quality of life was improved by a reduction in the magnitude of the curve. Conclusion: Spinal deformity exerts a psychological effect on adolescent girls.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis mainly deals with the relationships between the poetic manifestations of socialist realism and so called total realism in the early fifties. The first part focuses on general issues; within it I try to describe characteristic features of both poetics, for total realism it is done mostly in the background of comparison with like-minded concepts (Hrabal's poems from the fifties, the works of former members of Group 42). In other chapters of the text I am thinking about a total realism from two aspects: first, as an alternative form of realism, which defines itself against the official art, as well as a program that is dependent on the official art to some extent by paraphrasing or using some of its means and resources.

Abstract:
Investigations of the creative heritage of Russian writers and poets of the 18 th -19 th centuries, as well as of the most prominent representatives of the Russian clergy and Russian culture, are presented in the scientific work; key issues of the writers’ work method and style, of their works’ genre features, creative self-determination, are raised; new and unique explanations of both widely known and less read classics’ works, which reveal deep meanings and ideas that have not yet been identified in literary criticism, are given. The literary process of the era is illustrated by the special continuity of thoughts and ideas characteristic of Russian literature for which, deep vision and understanding of life, religious consciousness (it is from the said position the study of the works’ artistic worlds is necessary). Materials of archives, rare book publications and periodicals equipped with scientific commentary are introduced into scientific circulation. The originality of the published investigations and materials gives the collective work topicality and special colour on the whole.

Prentice, Christine. Māori Novels in English. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199679775.003.0031.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the history of Maōri novels written primarily in English and for adult readers, taking as its definitional starting point the self-identification of the author as Maōri. Critics have variously situated Maōri fiction in terms of international literary trends or regionally, as part of Pacific literature. The question that arises is whether it is most productive to read the Maōri novel in a comparative framework with other Indigenous literatures. The chapter considers English-language novels published in four different periods: the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, and the 2000s; the last period has seen the glocalization of the Maōri novel as writers have ventured into fantasy, magic realism, and Maōri sci-fi. Major Maōri novelists include Keri Hulme, Patricia Grace, Alan Duff, Witi Ihimaera, and Paula Morris.

Abstract:
This chapter summarizes research on analytic versus holistic thinking, including locus of attention, causal perception, perception of change, tolerance of contradiction, and categorization—constructs that are widely studied in social psychology and other related fields, such as consumer psychology. The chapter also reviews the literature on the Analysis-Holism Scale (AHS): how it was developed and how it differs from scales that measure other cultural differences (e.g., individualism versus collectivism; independent versus interdependent self; dialectical versus linear self). Empirical evidence supporting the validity of the AHS in various cognitive domains is introduced. The chapter concludes with a review of recently published papers in which the AHS has been validated and utilized for various purposes.

Abstract:
Although effective physician–patient communication relies on both parties, an overwhelming majority of literature within the field of healthcare communication has focused on the physician or healthcare provider. This chapter presents research aimed at improving patient communication skills and physician–patient interactions through patient training. Published interventions can be categorized as those that entail the presentation of written materials only, materials plus some form of individualized coaching, or a group-based training format. Many patient communication interventions focus exclusively on patient question asking. Interventions reviewed in this chapter incorporate a broader range of skills towards a more comprehensive training. Available literature has demonstrated the impact of patient communication skills training on patient self-efficacy, behavioural intention, observed skill usage, treatment adherence, and more. A notable limitation of current research is the lack of a unifying theoretical model. The chapter proposes concordance, or shared physician–patient agreement, as a useful conceptual framework.

Abstract:
The point of departure for this chapter is a little known work by Jožef Šubic, whose translation of Virgil’s Georgics, published in 1863, although largely unknown outside scholarly circles, nonetheless offers an important background to the Slovenian school of translation of Greek and Latin texts and of classics in general. Marinčič argues that this text, written in a hybrid metrical pattern, is by no means a literary masterpiece, but it is a groundbreaking work reflecting the contemporary debates concerning the use of classical metrical forms and implicitly opposing the Romantic ideology of agricultural self-sufficiency, which, in the course of the nineteenth century, resulted in a widespread prejudice against translation of world literature.

Illness intrusiveness results when medical conditions and their treatment interfere with continued participation in lifestyles, valued activities, and interests. The Illness Intrusiveness theoretical framework outlines the sources, consequences, and moderator variables that shape the psychosocial impact of illness intrusiveness on subjective well-being. This chapter outlines the illness intrusiveness theoretical framework and reviews the empirical evidence. It critiques the published literature that evaluates self-management efforts to minimize illness intrusiveness to preserve subjective well-being. It concludes with suggestions for future research. Abstract:
The epilogue notes that kinship, privilege, occupation, intragroup status, and social mobility affected crucial transitions in self-awareness as well as class awareness among the narrators. Growing self-respect kindled in many narrators a desire for a future that coalesced around an imagined free self. Narrating this process of inner growth individualized and liberated African American personhood in mid-century literature. Slave narratives from this generation created the most sophisticated commentary on caste and class in the South to be found in nineteenth-century American literature. In the late nineteenth century, former slaves continued to publish autobiographies in large numbers. Their experiences in slavery and perspectives on it were often very different from those of the antebellum narrators. Without taking into account the slave narratives published between 1865 and 1901, our comprehension of slavery and the full diversity of African American self-portraiture in the slave narrative will remain limited and partial.

Full text
Abstract:
Would Barthes have carried through to completion his plan to write a novel? The largely unpublished Roland Barthes archive, held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, shows clearly that he worked right up to his death on his Vita nova project. What is less known is that another project entered into competition with it. In the last months of his life, Barthes was hesitating between writing a fictional work or writing the literary history he referred to as ‘Notre littérature’ (Our literature). The existence and gestation of this project, which can be traced in Barthes’s fichier, offers an illuminating example of this filing-system at work. The fichier can be seen as a curious intellectual object: autonomous and self-renewing, but in constant dialogue with previously published texts; often, these return to their starting point as fiches, before being recycled by Barthes in new contexts. More specifically, this chapter has two aims: first, to present the detail of Barthes’s project of a ‘subjective’ history of French literature, contextualising it within his earlier publications on literary history; second, to analyse his very late hesitation between the two forms of writing he wished to renew – a fictional work or a literary history.

Abstract:
This five-part dialogue argues that despite its common positioning as a ‘minor’ player in Italian letters, Somali Italian literature has prompted a major shift in the Italian cultural field by bringing to light forgotten pages of Italian history. This chapter presents key issues in Shirin’s career which represents some aspects of Somali Italian authors’ struggles to be heard and read, including the processes of translation and self-translation, and the challenges to be published. The chapter argues that collaborative writing can challenge the ‘minor’ role that immigrant authors occupy in the present cultural industry and their marginalisation in academic discussions concerning them.

Abstract:
Medd examines the correspondence between E.M. Forster and T.E. Lawrence, in which new possibilities of both male intimacy and masculine self-understanding were achieved through an exchange of writing and reading. This epistolary literary exchange eschewed conventions of published literary circulation and reconfigured the traditional reader-writer dyad. As Forster and Lawrence forged a friendship through the exchange of literary materials – including Forster’s ‘unpublishable’ fiction – and a self-reflective dialogue over their experiences of reading one another’s literature and absorbing their interlocutor’s response to their own writing, they negotiated the tricky landscape of male intimacy heightened with homoerotic possibilities, while also discovering and re-imagining new possibilities of (homo)sexual and literary self-understanding. The correspondence constitutes an alternative queer circuit of literary exchange, in which scenes of reading and writing form bonds of male intimacy that re imagine both the terms of masculine identity and desire and the very terms of the literary itself.

Abstract:
Unlike studies of teacher feedback on student writing, research into teacher self-assessment of their own feedback practices is quite rare in the assessment literature. In this reflective case study, the researcher/teacher systematically analyzed feedback practices to clearly determine the form and kind of formative feedback being provided on student essays, and also to compare these feedback practices to recommended practice from the feedback literature. The research took place in an academic English writing course for third-year students at a Japanese university. A close examination of the teacher feedback on the first draft of 21 student essays was undertaken, and more than 800 feedback interventions were identified and coded. Results of this investigation show a number of patterns of practice in giving feedback, including; extensive use of questions in teacher commentary, very limited use of praise comments, and varying amounts of feedback provided on individual essays. Results also show that the feedback practices discovered through this investigation align well with recommended best practice. The case study positions the teacher as ‘learner' in this feedback process, and calls for similar published research describing in detail what teachers do when providing feedback to students on their work.

This chapter’s aim is to synthesize and present insights relevant to CRM process implementation in retail banking drawn from the Marketing research literature. The authors first summarize strategic concepts from the Marketing discipline that they believe are fundamental to the CRM process but appear to be frequently forgotten in actual implementations which focus on the enabling technologies. They then describe a comprehensive framework for conceptualizing, operationalizing, and measuring CRM process implementation and its impact on firm performance, and illustrate its use to identify activities that must be performed for successful CRM in the context of a published case study of CRM implementation at a European Bank. Subsequently, the authors summarize research in one area of great importance to CRM managers at banks, namely, customer response to self-service banking technologies. The chapter concludes with some interesting directions for future research drawn from recent work in the Marketing research literature.

Abstract:
Delivering course content via portable/mobile audio players can be a part of an effective selfregulatory strategy that also accommodates multiple learning styles while overcoming intrusive thoughts and the anxiety that accompanies them. As a result, academic performance can improve, while increasing self-concept and self-efficacy. Preliminary results of a literature search tracing the impact of intrusive thoughts on performance and a survey of students in extreme conditions where intrusive thoughts are common, suggest that audio downloaded via podcast and played on mobile players can be an effective strategy for combating intrusive thoughts. The combination of surveys and published research also suggested that further studies are warranted in order to explore the most appropriate podcast-based solution to numerous varieties of negative cognitive and emotional responses.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2014: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2014-25654.

Abstract:
It is well-known that the vibrational behavior of a mistuned bladed disk differs strongly from that of a tuned bladed disk. A large number of publications dealing with the dynamics of mistuned bladed disks is available in the literature. The vibrational phenomena analyzed in these publications are either forced vibrations or self-excited flutter vibrations. Nearly all published literature on the forced vibrations of mistuned blades disks considers harmonic, i. e. steady-state, vibrations, whereas the self-excited flutter vibrations are analyzed by the evaluation of the margin against instabilities by means of a modal, or rather than eigenvalue, analysis. The transient forced response of mistuned bladed disk is not analyzed in detail so far. In this paper, a computationally efficient mechanical model of a mistuned bladed disk to compute the transient forced response is presented. This model is based on the well-known Fundamental Model of Mistuning. With this model, the statistics of the transient forced response of a mistuned bladed disk is analyzed and compared to the results of harmonic forced response analysis.

Abstract:
This paper is to develop a large-scale energy harvester for traffic monitoring systems by using a unique half-wave mechanical motion rectify mechanism. When vehicles pass over the energy harvesting device, the electrical energy can be produced by the mechanical motion even after the vehicle passed by, which solves the difficulty in regeneration energy from impulse vibration. Design approach and dynamics modeling are presented to reveal the working mechanism of the energy conversion. In-field test with a sedan car is carried out and the regenerated power up about 24 Watts can be produced, which is much larger than the existing highway energy harvester in the published literature. This large-scale energy harvesting mechanism using the proposed MMR mechanism can help to develop harvesting device to build up self-power energy source for highway transportation monitoring system.

Abstract:
Auditory salience describes the extent to which sounds attract the listener’s attention. So far, there have not been any published studies testing if the location of sound relative to the listener influences its salience. In fact, not many experiments in general test auditory attention in a fully spatialised setting, with sounds in front and behind the listener. We modified two experimental methods from the literature so that they can be used to test spatial salience - one based on oddball detection and artificially created sounds, the other based on self-reported attention tracking in a more ecologically valid scenario. Each of these methods has its advantages and each presents different challenges. However, they both seem to indicate that high frequency sounds arriving from the back are slightly less salient. We believe this result could likely be explained by loudness differences.

Gill, Grandon. "The Predatory Journal: Victimizer or Victim?" In InSITE 2021: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences. Informing Science Institute, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4780.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: Labeling a journal as “predatory” can do great damage to the journal and the individuals that have contributed to it. This paper considers whether the predatory classification has outlived its usefulness and what might replace it. Background: With the advent of open access publishing, the term “predatory” has increasingly been used to identify academic journals, conferences, and publishers whose practices are driven by profit or self-interest rather than the advancement of science. Absent clear standards for determining what is predatory and what is not, concerns have been raised about the misuse of the label. Methodology: Mixed methods: A brief review of the literature, some illustrative case studies, and conceptual analysis. Contribution: The paper provides recommendations for reducing the impact of illegitimate journals. Findings: Current predatory classifications are being assigned with little or no systematic research and virtually no accountability. The predatory/not predatory distinction does not accommodate alternative journal missions. Recommendations for Researchers: The distinction between legitimate and illegitimate journals requires consideration of each journal’s mission. To serve as a useful guide, a process akin to that used for accrediting institutions needs to be put in place. Impact on Society: Avoiding unnecessary damage to the careers of researchers starting out. Future Research: Refining the initial classification scheme proposed in the paper. Abstract:
Droplet behavior on structured surfaces has recently generated a lot of interest due to its application to self-cleaning surfaces and in microfluidic devices. In this paper, the droplet shape and the droplet state on superhydrophobic surfaces are predicted using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach. Various structured surfaces are considered and the apparent contact angles are extracted from the predicted droplet shapes. Droplet dynamics under electrowetting are also modeled, including contact line friction. The model is validated against in-house experiments and experiments from the literature. The droplet state, droplet shape and apparent contact angles match well with the experimental measurements. The Cassie and Wenzel states on structured surfaces are also accurately predicted. Further, the electrowetting-induced transition from the Cassie to the Wenzel state and the reversal to the Cassie state is predicted for two different superhydrophobic surfaces. The transient wetting process, intermediate energy states and droplet shapes during electrowetting are simulated. The effective contact line friction coefficient on pillared surfaces is predicted to be 0.14 Ns/m2, consistent with published values.

"Modal Frequency Response of a Four-Pad Tilting Pad Bearing With Spherical Pivots, Finite Pivot Stiffness and Different Pad Preloads." In ASME Turbo Expo 2010: Power for Land, Sea, and Air. ASMEDC, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2010-23609.

Abstract:
Tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) provide radial support for rotors in high-speed machinery. Since the tilting pads cannot support a moment about the pivot, self-excited cross-coupled forces due to fluid-structure interactions are greatly reduced or eliminated. However, the rotation of the tilting pads about the pivots introduces additional degrees of freedom into the system. When the flexibility of the pivot results in pivot stiffness that is comparable to the equivalent stiffness of the oil film, then pad translations as well as pad rotations have to be considered in the overall bearing frequency response. There is significant disagreement in the literature over the nature of the frequency response of TPJBs due to non-synchronous rotor perturbations. In this paper, a bearing model that explicitly considers pad translations and pad rotations is presented. This model is transformed to modal coordinates using state-space analysis to determine the natural frequencies and damping ratios for a four-pad tilting pad bearing. Experimental static and dynamic results were previously reported in the literature for the subject bearing. The bearing characteristics as tested are considered using a thermoelastohydrodynamic (TEHD) model. The subject bearing was reported as having an elliptical bearing bore and varying pad clearances for loaded and unloaded pads during the test. The TEHD analysis assumes a circular bearing bore, so the average bearing clearance was considered. Because of the ellipticity of the bearing bore, each pad has its own effective preload, which was considered in the analysis. The unloaded top pads have a leading edge taper. The loaded bottom pads have finned backs and secondary cooling oil flow. The bearing pad cooling features are considered by modeling equivalent convective coefficients for each pad back. The calculated bearing full stiffness and damping coefficients are also reduced non-synchronously to the eight stiffness and damping coefficients typically used in rotordynamic analyses and are expressed as bearing complex impedances referenced to shaft motion. Results of the modal analysis are compared to a two degree-of-freedom second-order model obtained via a frequency-domain system identification procedure. Theoretical calculations are compared to previously published experimental results for a four-pad tilting pad bearing. Comparisons to the previously published static and dynamic bearing characteristics are considered for model validation. Differences in natural frequencies and damping ratios resulting from the various models are compared, and the implications for rotordynamic analyses are considered.

Abstract:
Since the 70’s, nothing substantially new has been published in the Gas Turbine Community about the hot corrosion by vanadium and its inhibition, after the “inhibition orthodoxy” based on the formation of magnesium vanadate, was established. However, the experience acquired since the late 80’s with Heavy Duty Gas Turbines burning ash-forming fuels in Southern China, shows that the combustion of very contaminated fuels does not entail corrosion nor abundant ash-deposit on gas turbines buckets. Analyses of deposits collected from gas turbines fired with these crude oils showed that the ash-deposit contains a large amount of nickel. These new facts led to revisit the role played by nickel and envisage its possible inhibiting action against the vanadium-induced hot corrosion. A thorough review of the literature on the vanadium-induced corrosion have been carried out, and the study of the nickel effects with respect to magnesium effects on the ash deposit have been performed Results show that nickel presents an interesting way to substitute magnesium for the inhibition of vanadium-induced hot corrosion. The advantages of nickel with respect to magnesium are to be efficient at a low Ni/V ratio, to produce less abundant, less adherent ash and to act, to some extent, as a self-cleaning agent for the blades of the turbine.
