Abstract:
Continuing to consider the trends of the world book publishing, it is impossible not to dwell on the self-publishing, which has been gaining momentum in the world since the beginning of the century. Back in 2008, samizdat was equal to the number of titles published with books published by traditional publishers. In 2018, 1 million book titles were self-published in the US. China has crossed the million mark long ago. Statistics from China and Japan coming to the International Publishers Association also include self-published books, so the number of titles published in China is a staggering 65 007 519 and Japan's 2 017 808, including those published by traditional publishers in China — 203 000, and in Japan — 76 581 [1]. In our study, we sought to identify causes and identify trends in the emergence, growth, and spread of self-publishing in European countries and the United States. How self-publishing allows authors of publications to bypass publishers and bookstores and sell books directly to a potential reader. The impact of self-publishing on the publishing industry as a whole has been established: reducing the cost of printing, storing and distributing books. It has been proven that the impetus for self-publishing publications has been the development of technology, the improvement of e-book and tablet readers that have improved readability; provided free access to view and purchase the book. The article explores the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing a book; the role of publishing platforms that allow the author to publish the book independently; the author's image risks are analyzed when publishing a book with self-view; attention is paid to the concept of graphic arts; the difference between graphomaniac and true self-expression is determined. Literary genres preferred by authors who decide to publish a book by themselves are considered. Self-published books are generally not eligible for prizes for literary or artistic achievement. The article gives examples of the first literary awards for self-published authors.

Abstract:
Self-efficacy belief, which can affect the performance of individuals by determining their approach to goals, tasks and difficulties, has been the subject of numerous studies in different disciplines. Mathematics self-efficacy has become the focus of researchers all over the world, especially because of its strong impact on achievement in educational research. In Turkey, studies conducted with different variables and research designs on the theme of mathematics self-efficacy add richness to the literature, but make it difficult to reveal the current situation of this theme. This study aimed to investigate mathematics self-efficacy themed articles in terms of the field, subject, study group/sampling, applied method, data collection tools, analysis techniques, and publishing language in Turkey. The study was designed as a descriptive content analysis. 101 articles published between 2010 and 2022 were included in the study. Data were analysed by using the MAXQDA 2022 qualitative analysis program. The analysis of the data was based on the code and category list designed by Baş and Özturan Sağırlı (2017). The research concluded that the number of mathematics self-efficacy themed articles in Turkey has increased with fluctuations over the years, but there has been a significant decrease in recent years and these articles focused on the fields of mathematics and geometry education and the subject matter of mathematics self-efficacy, mathematical literacy self-efficacy, and mathematics teaching self-efficacy. In addition, it was determined that the most frequently used methods are surveys and scale development studies. These are followed by experimental design and mixed method studies. Accordingly, it has been concluded that data is often collected through scales/surveys, and very few studies apply qualitative data collection techniques. Moreover, the most used analysis techniques were correlation, t-test and ANOVA. It was determined that the most frequently studied group consists of middle school students and prospective teachers. Most of mathematics self-efficacy themed articles in Turkey were published in Turkish.

Full text
Abstract:
The article presents the phenomenon of informal newspapers fanzines published by the Lithuanian youth. Using a digitized collection of 500 fanzines from the 1990s and additional sources representing rock music, punk, science-fiction, and other subcultures, employing certain methods of textual analysis and ethnographic research (questionnaires, targeted interviews with zinesters, publishers, and collectors), the article analyses emergence of fanzines, their prevalence in Lithuania, and motivation for their publishing.
The main results of the research show that the most active period of fanzine-publishing in Lithuania was 1990–2004 when a wave of subcultural self-expression among young people was spreading after the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. Fanzines as a phenomenon were characteristic not only of Lithuania’s major cities, but also of its regions. The main motivation to create fanzines signifies young people’s need to disseminate the issues of cultural life important to them yet absent from the official press, to express their creative potential, and to broaden their circle of the like-minded people.

Abstract:
Aims and MethodTo describe the information and help available on the internet for people who self-harm. We searched the internet using a meta-search engine. We visited sites and followed up links with e-mails and letters. We also searched bibliographic databases, seeking published material about the internet and self-harm.ResultsThe support that we found largely took the form of information about suicide, self-injury and psychological issues. Less often, sites offered e-mail support and online discussions. We found little information about self-poisoning, and most about self-injury. There is little published research about self-harm and the internet.Clinical ImplicationsThe unregulated sites of the internet contain much material about self-injury. Although it is not possible at present to weigh up risks and benefits, many individuals and organisations plainly regard internet information about self-harm as a valuable service.

Abstract:
Objective: This study systematically analyzed and reviewed literature on self-driving for the disabled published in Korea over the past 10 years. Methods: We searched literature published between January 2014 and December 2023 in the Library of Congress, RISS, KISS, DBpia, and Google Scholar. The search terms “disabled” and “self-driving” were used, and a total of 469 documents were searched. Of these, 28 articles that met the selection criteria were analyzed. Results: Research published domestically on self-driving for the disabled was gradually decreasing. The most common type of published literature was academic journals. The first author who conducted literature research most often belonged to the Department of Occupational Therapy and the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Engineering, and the most common research area was the establishment of systems to promote and support self-driving for the disabled. The majority of research designs were experimental studies, but the overall level of research was confirmed to be low. Conclusion: Analyzing literature on self-driving for the disabled published domestically, we were able to understand the current status of research in our country. This study is significant as basic data that can be used as a reference when an advanced system that can support and guarantee self-driving for the disabled is introduced in Korea in the future.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze previous research on undergraduate students' self-leadership and self-efficacy to identify domestic research trends and provide directions. For the selection of literature, this study searched related literature published between January 1, 2009, and October 31, 2022, through KCI and RISS, and finally selected 28 published research papers based on the inclusion and exclusion standards. The final 28 papers were analyzed through a systematic literature review to build a comprehensive understanding. A detailed analysis of the self-leadership and self-efficacy concepts, participants, measures, etc., was conducted based on the papers collected through the criteria established.
Main results of this study are as follow. First, since 2009, related research has been published. In 2016 and 2020, there were the most studies, with five each. Second, most research participants were nursing students. Third, the Revised Self-leadership Questionnaire (RSLQ) developed by Houghton and Neck (2002), which was translated into Korean by Shin et al. (2009), is mainly used for measuring self-leadership. For self-efficacy, the Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) developed by Sherer et al. (1982), which was translated into the Korean context by Hong (2015), is primarily used. This research has implications for increasing undergraduate students' self-leadership and self-efficacy. It also gives researchers and practitioners helpful insights about setting up self-leadership and self-efficacy-related programs in higher education institutions so that students can be flexible leaders in a complex society. Suggestions for future research on related issues are discussed.

Anderson, Kevin, and Lynne M. Emmerton. "Contribution of mobile health applications to self-management by consumers: review of published evidence." Australian Health Review 40, no. 5 (2016): 591. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ah15162.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective The aim of the present study was to review the contribution of mobile health applications (‘apps’) to consumers’ self-management of chronic health conditions, and the potential for this practice to inform health policy, procedures and guidelines. Methods A search was performed on the MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, ProQuest and Global Health (Ovid) databases using the search terms ‘mobile app*’, ‘self-care’, ‘self-monitoring’, ‘trial’, ‘intervention*’ and various medical conditions. The search was supplemented with manual location of emerging literature and government reports. Mapping review methods identified relevant titles and abstracts, followed by review of content to determine extant research, reports addressing the key questions, and gaps suggesting areas for future research. Available studies were organised by disease state, and presented in a narrative analysis. Results Four studies describing the results of clinical trials were identified from Canada, England, Taiwan and Australia; all but the Australian study used custom-made apps. The available studies examined the effect of apps in health monitoring, reporting positive but not robust findings. Australian public policy and government reports acknowledge and support self-management, but do not address the potential contribution of mobile interventions. Conclusions There are limited controlled trials testing the contribution of health apps to consumers’ self-management. Further evidence in this field is required to inform health policy and practice relating to self-management. What is known about the topic? Australian health policy encourages self-care by health consumers to reduce expenditure in health services. A fundamental component of self-care in chronic health conditions is self-monitoring, which can be used to assess progress towards treatment goals, as well as signs and symptoms of disease exacerbation. An abundance of mobile health apps is available for self-monitoring. What does this study add? A limited number of randomised control trials have assessed the clinical impact of health apps for self-monitoring. The body of evidence relating to current and long-term clinical impact is developing. Despite endorsing self-care, Australian health policy does not address the use and potential contribution of mobile health apps to health care. What are the implications? Widespread and sustained use of validated mobile health apps for chronic health conditions should have potential to improve consumer independence, confidence and burden on health services in the longer term. However, a significant body of scientific evidence has not yet been established; this is mirrored in the lack of acknowledgement of health apps in Australian health policy referring to consumers’ self-management.

Abstract:
Purpose The present study aims to determine the prevailing trend of self-citations across 27 major subject disciplines at global level. The study also examines the aspects like percentage of self-citations in each individual subject discipline and the average number of self-citations per publication across different subject disciplines. The study also investigates self-citation percentage of research articles published from the 20 leading research countries of the world and across the continents. Design/methodology/approach The study is supported by empirical findings undertaken on secondary data retrieved from SCImago Journal and Country Ranking, which is entirely based on the SCOPUS data source (SCImago, 2014). Findings In all, 76,634,557 citations were received by as many as 14,946,975 research articles published from 2008-2012 at an average of 5.12 citations per article. Of the total citations received, 26,404,609 (34.45 per cent) were self-citations, which means that of the total citations received by each research article, 1.76 are self-citations. Compared to subject disciplines falling under social and humanistic sciences, pure and applied sciences have shown a greater trend of self-citation. On average, 4.18 self-citations were observed in each research article published in multidisciplinary subject disciplines. Of the total citations received by research articles published in the discipline of Psychology, 43.69 per cent are self-citations, the highest among all the subject disciplines under study. Of the total self-citations received by all the subject disciplines under study, 18.43 per cent were received alone in medicine, highest among all, whereas Social and Humanistic sciences received less than 1.00 per cent self-citations, the lowest among all the subject disciplines. Originality/value This study is original and first of its kind covering each individual subject discipline having global scope.

Abstract:
Career maturity is a continual process of development that demonstrates notably recognised attributes required for career advancement. However, internal and environmental variables determine career maturity. This study explores the aspects of career maturity in high school students by collecting the literature. The following criteria were used to choose articles for inclusion: 1) articles describing career maturity in general high school or vocational high school; 2) articles published in English or Indonesian; 3) entire passages in published works; 4) published during the previous ten years. Results mentioned students at vocational high schools typically have more components than students in general high schools. Social attachment, adversity intelligence, emotional intelligence, career interest, motivation, and career aspirations are maturity elements that show in vocational students. Meanwhile, self-determination, self-esteem, self-actualisation, self-confidence, and psychological well-being, on the other hand, are characteristics that impact the professional maturity of general high school students. Since most of these elements are internal to students, it is critical for general high school students to recognise self-reinforcement and self-understanding.

Abstract:
Self-directed learning as a topic began to become known to experts in the field of adult education in the 1960s. As well at that time, its relatively intensive research begins. The purpose of this text is to map the methods used in the empirical study of self-directed learning. For this purpose, the analysis of empirically focused articles published in the journal that is the only one specializing in the issue, the International Journal of Self-Directed Learning, was carried out, and two other journals Adult Education Quarterly (AEQ) and International Journal of Lifelong Education (IJLE). The result of the analysis of a total of 99 empirically focused texts published in the above mentioned journal is the basic overview of instruments that can be used in the study of self-directed learning, namely (a) in both quantitative and qualitative research design and (b) in the study of self-directed learning as a process and self-direction as a an attribute of a personality.

Full text
Abstract:
Both self-help books and illness narratives are motivated by an impulse to overcome a crisis and, simultaneously, to help others who suffer from similar conditions. In doing so, authors of self-help and illness narratives move in between polar opposites: they have both individual and collective motives, they have a desire to overcome uncertainty and achieve control and they negotiate the authority of experience versus the authority of expertise. This paper has two objectives: (1) It describes the intersections of illness life writing and self-help culture and traces the thematic, cultural and historical similarities. (2) It analyzes a selection of four autobiographical, U.S.-American self-help books on age-related infertility published between 1987 and 2009. In juxtaposing these books with research perspectives from self-help criticism and medical humanities, the paper suggests that the authors blur the boundaries between patient and expert in their attempts to achieve control over what is ultimately uncontrollable – the body. The paper closes with a reflection on how scientific discourses and the Quantified Self-movement influence self-help narratives on illness. This article was submitted on June 1st, 2014 and published on November 3rd 2014.

Abstract:
A do-it-yourself culture and amateur production are significant features of creative industries. Self-publishing is an eloquent expression of these features. Self-publishers invest in and make decisions to publish their creative goods without the involvement of an established and external production company or publishing house. In creative industries, claims are made about the inferior quality of self-published works, creating a stigma for self-publishing. This article investigates the ways in which aspiring writers who are considering self-publishing, handle the tension between their aspiration to publish a book and the possible stigma of self-publishing. The study draws on an analysis of interviews with 59 writers who are considering self-publishing as an option or who have self-published a book. The aspiring writers are aware of the subordinate status of such publications and while some avoid self-publishing, others seek ways to establish and legitimise the quality of their work to avoid the stigma. Legitimisation is produced through the perception of a transitioning author role and by shifting the basis of evaluation of publishability to the consumer side in creative industries, to non-professional judgement, and to the experience of being published. The outcome of the decision to self-publish, and the underpinning culture for making such assessments, has consequences for how books and other cultural goods are currently produced and the type of cultural goods that reach consumers. The assessment of self-publishing as an option among writers exposes tensions and transformations in the evaluation of cultural goods in contemporary creative industries.

Abstract:
Lesack et al. recently published a cross-sectional study that focused on human papillomavirus (HPV) self-sampling in the screened population, a population not conventionally thought of for HPV self-sampling. They found 52% of well-screened, highly educated women who participated in the Human Papillomavirus For Cervical Cancer (HPV FOCAL) screening trial in British Columbia, Canada, would be willing to self-collect an HPV sample. We published a similar study in 2021 on well-screened, highly educated women affiliated with a family medicine clinic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and found that 60% of these women preferred to have the option of HPV self-sampling. Our findings reinforce Lesack et al.’s results and together provide evidence for offering HPV self-sampling as an option for the well-screened population.

Abstract:
The paper examines four texts by V. Stus, published in the uncensored periodical “Ukrainskyi Visnyk” from January 1970 to January 1971 (“A Place in a Battle or in a Massacre?”, “Nowadays it is clear to everyone...”, “Every normally organized society...”, and the poem in memory of Alla Horska “Burn Bright, My Soul, Burn Bright, and Do Not Weep!”) taking into account the investigative files of the poet, who was convicted of self-publishing. Within the analyzed prose texts, Stus defends well-known representatives of the resistance movement (Ivan Dziuba, Valentyn Moroz, Vasyl Zakharchenko, Ivan Suk), emphasizes every person’s need for freedom, and draws attention to the necessity of dialogue between the state leadership and society as the latter also bears responsibility for the authorities’ criminal actions. The poet underlines the important role of the creative youth, in which he sees the ‘self-recovery’ of the Ukrainian nation.
In the poem “Burn Bright, My Soul, Burn Bright, and Do Not Weep!”, Stus relates his personal profound tragedy, caused by the murder of A. Hors’ka, to the tragedy experienced by the entire generation of the sixtiers and the nation as a whole. There is a variety of colors in the poem (an allusion to painting, to which A. Horska devoted her life) with the dominance of red, embodied in the image of viburnum, the national symbol of Ukraine. The revised versions of the poem, published in the collections “The Merry Cemetery” and “Palimpsests”, were also considered. The issue of national identity in Stus’s texts is presented implicitly: he primarily defends a man and the values of freedom, which is associated with creative opportunities for the development of native culture. It is noteworthy that the national issue constitutes a significant point in the investigative files, forming the basis for accusations of 'anti-Soviet activities' against the poet.

Abstract:
Self-regulated learning (SRL) has been an important topic in the field of global educational psychology research since the last century, and its emergence is related to researchers’ reflections on several educational reforms. To better study the research history and developmental trend of SRL, in this work, the Web of Science core collection database was used as a sample source, “self-regulated learning” was searched as the theme, and 1218 SSCI documents were collected from 30 September 1986, to 2022. We used CiteSpace software to visualize and analyze the number of publications, countries, institutions, researchers, keywords, highly cited literature, authors’ co-citations, keyword clustering, and timeline in the field of self-regulated learning research, and to draw related maps. It was found that the articles related to self-regulated learning were first published in the American Journal of Educational Research in 1986, and that self-regulated learning-related research has received increasing attention in recent decades, wherein research on self-regulated learning is roughly divided into three periods: the budding period from 1986 to 2002, the flat development period from 2003 to 2009, and the rapid development period from 2010 to 2022. The number of papers published in the United States, China, Australia, and Germany is relatively high, and the number of papers published in Spain is low compared with that in the United States. During this period, the University of North Carolina in the United States and McGill University in Canada were the institutions with the most publications; Azevedo Roger and Lajoie Susanne P were the most-published scholars in the field of self-regulated learning research; the journal publication with the highest impact factor was Computers Education; and the primary research interests in self-regulated learning mainly focused on Performance, Strategy, Students, Achievement, Motivation, and Metacognition. Furthermore, the most-cited study related to SRL research was Formative assessment and self-regulated learning: a model and seven principles of good feedback practice.

Abstract:
AbstractPurposeTo identify from the literature, and to critically evaluate, all validated instruments currently available to measure self-harming behaviour in adults.Materials and methodsMedline, Embase, PsycInfo, Health and Psychosocial Instruments and Google scholar were searched, grey literature was sought and the reference lists of relevant articles were checked to identify instruments.ResultsA total of seven validated instruments which met our inclusion criteria were identified and data were extracted regarding each instrument's format, administration method, psychometric properties and number of items and domains included. Considerable variation was observed in the overall quality of these instruments. Fourteen other instruments were identified which did not describe their psychometric properties or had not been published and were subsequently excluded from our review.DiscussionAlthough many instruments were identified in our search, only a small number had been validated with published psychometric properties. Of the identified instruments, the Suicide Attempt Self-Injury Interview (SASII) appears to be the most robust and comprehensive instrument currently available. Despite the absence of psychometric data, numerous other instruments have been used in published studies, including clinical trials.ConclusionOur results highlight the pressing need for a standardized, empirically validated and versatile measure of intentional self-harming behaviour for use in both clinical and research settings. The optimum characteristics of such an instrument are discussed.

Abstract:
Business science is a field that has been facing some challenges recently, especially when it comes to overproduction (hyperprolific), excessive self-citations, and charging for publications in open-access journals. To shed light on these issues, a recent study was conducted based on three cases. The first case focused on super-producing authors, where an advanced search strategy was used to identify the ten most productive authors in Brazil in the last five years. The study found that these authors published a paper on average every 2,68 days, a staggering rate. Interestingly, these authors had a direct relationship and published their articles in collaboration, always in the same journal. The papers all dealt with RIFM fragrance ingredient safety assessment, and while they were typical mass production, the citations were very low. The second case examined self-citations, where a research group published 15 papers in the last five years, with seven of them published in a journal that the group had purchased. The analysis found that two of the most representative authors in the research group obtained a significant number of self-citations. Finally, the study looked at the costs associated with publishing in open-access journals. The analysis found that some journals charge many publishing fees for accessing and indexing on platforms, which can be a significant barrier to disseminating research. Overall, these cases highlight the challenges faced by the science industry and the need for measures to ensure fair and transparent practices.

Abstract:
As construction of thought, self-concept will continue to grow and develop following the life experiences, one of which can come from stories. Therefore, this study aims to uncover and describe indicators of self-concept from children's stories. The data was obtained based on ten children's stories from the online version of Bobo magazine published in 2019-2020. This research used the content analysis method with categorization and tabulation until inference was found. The results revealed that Bobo magazine had implied self-concepts in the published stories. Among them, such as self-identity related to the labels attached by other characters as well as the character's desire to be what kind of self; personal behavior related to the views of other characters and figures in viewing their behavior; and self-judgment related to the acceptance or rejection of the character's behavior. Then, the physical self-concept associated with gender and character skills; moral self-concept related to the character's ability to control his behavior; personal self-concept related to good relations between characters; family self-concept related to the character's relationship with his family members; and social self-concept related to the character's relationship with his peers. These findings appear to confirm the representation of self-concepts in Indonesian children's short stories.

Abstract:
AbstractThere is a growing database of research on self-help and Internet-guided interventions in the treatment of common mental disorders, and a number of meta-analyses have now been published. This article provides a systematic review of meta-analyses on the efficacy of self-help interventions, including Internet-guided therapy, for depression and anxiety disorders. Searches were conducted in PubMed, PsychINFO, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database for statistical meta-analyses of randomized, controlled trials of self-help or Internet-guided interventions for depression or anxiety disorders published in English. Reference lists were also used to find additional studies. Effect sizes were tabulated; 13 meta-analyses reported medium to large effect sizes for self-help interventions. Studies included in the meta-analyses differed in samples, type of self-help (eg, computer-aided, Internet-guided), control conditions, and study design. The meta-analyses indicate that self-help methods are effective in a range of different disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders. Most meta-analyses found relatively large effect sizes for self-help treatments, independent of the type of self-help, and comparable to effect sizes for face-to-face treatments. However, further research is needed to optimize the use of self-help methods.
