Abstract:
Giving textiles form is a project in textile design exploring how textiles can create self-supporting three-dimensional forms with after finishing techniques. The project focuses on the textile to be self-supporting, by working against and challenging the properties of a textile fabric. The motive for the project is to widen the definition of what a textile can do. The methods of origami and traditional Japanese wood joinery are used to find a functioning and durable construction, as well as manipulating the textiles with colour and after finishing techniques. The result of this work is three coloured textile forms that are three-dimensional and self-supporting, the use of colour strengthens the depth and adds a spatial dimension. This work contributes to broaden the field of textile design by expanding the use of textile.

Schaeffer, Filho Alberto E. "Supporting management interaction and composition of self-managed cells." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/4674.

Full text
Abstract:
Management in ubiquitous systems cannot rely on human intervention or centralised decision-making functions because systems are complex and devices are inherently mobile and cannot refer to centralised management applications for reconfiguration and adaptation directives. Management must be devolved, based on local decision-making and feedback control-loops embedded in autonomous components. Previous work has introduced a Self-Managed Cell (SMC) as an infrastructure for building ubiquitous applications. An SMC consists of a set of hardware and software components that implement a policy-driven feedback control-loop. This allows SMCs to adapt continually to changes in their environment or in their usage requirements. Typical applications include body-area networks for healthcare monitoring, and communities of unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance operations. Ubiquitous applications are typically formed from multiple interacting autonomous components, which establish peer-to-peer collaborations, federate and compose into larger structures. Components must interact to distribute management tasks and to enforce communication strategies. This thesis presents an integrated framework which supports the design and the rapid establishment of policy-based SMC interactions by systematically composing simpler abstractions as building elements of a more complex collaboration. Policy-based interactions are realised – subject to an extensible set of security functions – through the exchanges of interfaces, policies and events, and our framework was designed to support the specification, instantiation and reuse of patterns of interaction that prescribe the manner in which these exchanges are achieved. We have defined a library of patterns that provide reusable abstractions for the structure, task-allocation and communication aspects of an interaction, which can be individually combined for building larger policy-based systems in a methodical manner. We have specified a formal model to ensure the rigorous verification of SMC interactions before policies are deployed in physical devices. A prototype has been implemented that demonstrates the practical feasibility of our framework in constrained resources.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to investigate self-supporting rack structures and develop a methodology for their analysis, pre-design and detailed design starting from a real case study. This kind of structures is becoming more and more popular nowadays, as the level of automation which characterizes it. Its efficiency needs to be as high as possible: this is achieved maximizing storage space while minimizing cost, through an extensive optimization process during design. In fact, its modular nature can be translated into huge savings even for a small reduction of material used in one axe. Following Eurocodes and European Norms, one of these structure has to be designed and built in Belgium in 2020: it is the aim of this thesis to present a comparison between two different analysis methodologies, as well as developing a methodology to design, verify and optimize the whole structure guaranteeing safety and cost-effectiveness. The design and verification process needs to be automatized as much as possible, in order to simplify the optimization of the single elements and, in general, be capable of handle this kind of project faster and faster in the future. Some details will require further analysis: it is one goal to identify here all of them and propose solutions, which can include finite element simulations and experimental tests.

Kelly, Freya. "Nurses Supporting Cancer Survivors with the Self-Management of Symptoms." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36948.

Full text
Abstract:
To examine evidence-based interventions for nurses to use when supporting cancer survivors self-manage their symptoms. Part I: A systematic review to determine the effect of shared medical appointments (SMAs) on patients with a physical chronic illness (excluding diabetes mellitus), their healthcare providers and the healthcare system. Nine randomized controlled trials were included; one focused on breast cancer survivors. This trial was feasible and showed no difference in outcomes compared to usual care. Part II: A descriptive study to adapt and evaluate the acceptability of an evidence-informed symptom practice guide (SPG) for use by nurses for the assessment, triage, and management of patients experiencing dyspnea due to cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity. Guided by the CAN-IMPLEMENT© methodology, evidence from seven guidelines on heart failure was added to the original SPG. Eleven participants indicated the adapted SPG was comprehensive and easy to follow, and would be helpful for handling symptom calls from patients.

Nakamura, Yuki. "Supporting self-help efforts : CanDo, a Japanese NGO in Kenya." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/1967.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are now key players in international development, but their activities have also been facing a large volume of criticism since around the turn of the century. The role of Northern NGOs in development assistance has been of particular concern due to a range of aspects of their work. Critical in the debates about NGOs are issues of legitimacy and of imposing outsiders’ views and priorities on their host communities through their development assistance. In such scepticism about Northern NGOs, there has been a shift to the current focus of large scale international NGOs’ activities which is now more on advocacy and emergency relief activities; more development assistance has been handed directly to local grassroots organisations or to partner organisations of international NGOs. The small scale Northern NGOs, which comprise the majority, have been in danger in the international arena. Since the 1990s, Japan has also witnessed the surge of NGOs working in international cooperation. The new type of NGOs, whose activities are inspired not by anti-government movements but by international development, grew rapidly with increased governmental assistance. These Japanese NGOs are, however, often small scale and mostly engaged in development assistance, unlike their counterparts in Western countries. The purpose of this study is to explore the activities, lifestyle, and development thinking of a single Japanese NGO in order to deepen our understanding of Japan’s international cooperation conducted by citizens from a wide range of aspects and to verify whether and how the Japanese philosophy of self-help efforts is put into practice in Kenya. Chapter 2 presents the methodology which is employed in the study. Chapter 3 looks at the origin and international trends of NGOs working in development through the relevant literature. The main focus is not put on an examination of NGOs’ national roles, rather it is placed on the transition of their role and relationship with states in general development issues. Chapter 4 examines community participation in development in the local Kenyan context. The chapter provides insights into the role of self-help and the way local self-help efforts have been directed by the national and local politics for development in Kenya. Chapter 5 looks at Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) in order to explore the conceptual and historical context of Japan’s international cooperation, as this has a considerable influence over Japanese NGOs. The chapter provides insights into the philosophy of self-help efforts in Japan’s ODA as well as on the influence of Japanese policy over the activities of Japanese NGOs. Chapter 6 investigates the systems and mechanisms of NGOs in Japan, including the origin and history of Japanese NGOs, the scale and scope of their activities, their funding system, and their relationships with their donors and amongst themselves, in addition to the interaction between the government and Japanese NGOs. Chapters 7 and 8 are the main body of this study and provide in-depth research on a Japanese NGO in Kenya: Community Action Development Organisation (CanDo). Although it is small when compared with International NGOs, CanDo has been drawing substantial attention in the Japanese international development community in these five years. The main purpose of these chapters is not to evaluate whether the activities of CanDo are effective or not, but rather to explore its philosophy of facilitating local self-help efforts and how the philosophy is put into practice in its activities in poor communities in Mwingi District, Kenya. Its philosophy is analysed through describing in detail its organisational characteristics, development thinking, and its relationships with the local authority and local community. The final chapter explores the implications of CanDo’s philosophy and practice in understanding Japanese international cooperation in Africa as well as the role of small international NGOs working on development activities with local communities.

Abstract:
A self-adaptive system aims at anticipating changes which occur in a complex environment and automatically deal with them at run time. Although a lot of work has been done on self-adaptive systems over the past decade but researchers have lack of knowledge on how the research results have contributed in improving of complex software systems. In addition, no systematic study has been performed so far on the claims along with the evidences associated with self-adaption. The concrete objectives of this thesis are to: (1)  assess the quality of current research in self-adaptive systems (2)  identify the focus of the research (3) what the expected claims are of self-adaption and to what extent these claimed benefits exist and (4) identify potential areas for future work in the field. For this purpose, various categories of 73 papers pertaining to SEAMS (2008-2010) were studied to obtain data related to 20 different items and after the concerted efforts, some research questions were framed for the collection of data.  The study description criterion were modified on the basis of results obtained out of the collected data from time to time which helped to modify the performance cycle through a continuous monitoring, resulting in to produce the accurate results at the end. This approach also enables the researcher how critically the papers can be studied/analyzed and how systematically the required data has been extracted from the papers through research questions and data items. The extracted data was then subsequently used to achieve all above mentioned objectives.       Numerous limitations during the study like observation of changed results due to human intervention or in case of conflict of opinions were faced. Secondly, this existing approach only dealt with SEAMS community and the results obtained from the extracted data may be different in case of dealing with other software engineering communities like ICAC (International Conference on Autonomic Computing) and SASO (Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing), which would be taken as a challenge for future work.

Abstract:

This mixed methods study was conducted in a large school system in Georgia. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast a variety of methods used to support new elementary teachers to increase both self-efficacy and retention. Traditional support methods such as teacher preparation, induction, mentoring, and administrator support were included in this study. In addition, minimally researched areas of new teacher support including instructional coaching, professional learning communities, observation/feedback, and online support were examined.

The data sources utilized in this study included an online new teacher survey, a new teacher focus group, and an administrative interview with the Executive Director for Human Resources Staffing for the school system. Based on the results, developing key partnerships between schools systems and teacher preparation institutions along with year-long student teaching experiences or residency programs is recommended to promote new teacher success. Additionally, the school system's own alternative teacher certification program exhibited positive results. Beginning teachers also expressed a desire for training on paperwork, student support meetings, and programs specific to the school system.

A common thread across all data sources was that support from people is extremely helpful to new teachers. In particular, mentoring and coaching were helpful across all three data sources. Moreover, online support including social networking and educational websites were shown to be extremely useful to novice teachers. Results also indicated that the opportunity to observe other teachers was tremendously beneficial and desired by 100 percent of new teachers who had not received that opportunity.

Abstract:
There is some evidence of the private sector playing a role in supporting refugee livelihoods and self-reliance in Uganda during the period 2016-2020. However, a number of evaluations and research reports highlight the potential for greater private sector involvement, if existing constraints are addressed. Key lessons identified in the literature include the need for more research, especially on market potential, to address the existing knowledge gaps on the role the private sector can play in supporting refugee livelihoods and self-reliance in Uganda. The literature notes that limited access to capital, as well as appropriate financing schemes, are key constraints to the growth of the agribusiness sector. Furthermore, access to natural resources required for agri-business, such as land and water needs to receive more attention from NGOs and donors. The evidence also shows that there is a need for guidelines on the monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian adaptations of market systems development programming. The literature also notes that local actors should be involved in the design and assessment of investment opportunities and risk of interventions to increase project impact.

Abstract:
This report details the findings of an Ontario-wide survey of 1194 school educators which is part of a larger study funded by funded by the Social Sciences Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The survey was developed in consultation with trans educators, school board officials, and community members and included a mix of qualitative and quantitative questions. The report is structured according to educators’ responses to questions about trans-inclusive policies, self-rated knowledge, and understanding of trans inclusion and gender diversity, training received, use of resources and the barriers to fostering gender diversity in schools. Educators’ recommendations and advice on improving education about trans inclusivity in schools are also reported. Key findings revealed that there continue to be systemic and structural impediments to supporting trans inclusion and gender diversity in schools, in terms of both the failure to enact policy and to provide adequate support, education, and resourcing for educators. Recommendations are outlined which relate to the need for further development of policies that identify the allocation of resources for both professional development and curriculum development as central to the necessary provision of support for trans students and creating gender-affirming schools. The report also stipulates the necessity for sustained accountability measures to be established by governing bodies, such as the Ontario Ministry of Education, for supporting gender diversity and trans inclusion with the explicit objective of supporting school boards fiscally in the provision of professional development and development of resources. Teacher Education faculties also need to be committed to ensuring that teacher candidates are provided with the knowledge and understanding of trans inclusion and what trans affirmative education entails.

Brasil, André. Multidimensionality through self-evaluation: From theory to practice in the Brazilian graduate system. Fteval - Austrian Platform for Research and Technology Policy Evaluation, April 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.22163/fteval.2022.546.

Full text
Abstract:
Nearly all science and technology research in Brazil is conducted within a national system of graduate education. Since the 1970s, a graduate program assessment has been an integral part of such a system, and it is currently held on a quadrennial basis. The evaluation model is dynamic, evolving from the experiences of evaluators, policymakers, and the scientific community during each four-year cycle. This study analyses policy initiatives from the 2017-2021 evolving effort, focusing on strategies and recommendations to implement multidimensionality and self-evaluation as integral components of Brazilian evaluation. The paper traces how the idea for a multidimensional assessment was introduced in the country and how U-Multirank, an international ranking of higher education institutions (HEI), has come to inspire an evaluation that is not institutional but of graduate programs instead. The study identified some benefits and limitations of the chosen inspiration and analysed how the Brazilian proposal aligned with the U-Multirank principles. Furthermore, the investigation shows there is little concrete difference from the proposed new model to the one Brazil has already in place. Finally, the last section of this study looks into the once pivotal idea to pursue a self-evaluation component, now relegated to a minor role in the model, but that could be raised to a position supporting the design of an actual multidimensional assessment model.

Abstract:
To ensure the maintenance and sustainability of social and behavior change (SBC), Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria is implementing a phased, performance-based community capacity strengthening (CCS) approach that focuses on engaging existing community leaders and structures—namely ward development committees—to increase community self-efficacy, coordinate and support the health ecosystem in general, and to ensure sustained community-level activities supporting behavior change and positive social norms for improved health outcomes. Using a qualitative approach, Breakthrough RESEARCH assessed early successes, challenges, and opportunities for Breakthrough ACTION/Nigeria’s CCS Phase 1 approach in selected wards of the Bauchi and Sokoto states in Nigeria.
