Abstract:
Giving textiles form is a project in textile design exploring how textiles can create self-supporting three-dimensional forms with after finishing techniques. The project focuses on the textile to be self-supporting, by working against and challenging the properties of a textile fabric. The motive for the project is to widen the definition of what a textile can do. The methods of origami and traditional Japanese wood joinery are used to find a functioning and durable construction, as well as manipulating the textiles with colour and after finishing techniques. The result of this work is three coloured textile forms that are three-dimensional and self-supporting, the use of colour strengthens the depth and adds a spatial dimension. This work contributes to broaden the field of textile design by expanding the use of textile.

Schaeffer, Filho Alberto E. "Supporting management interaction and composition of self-managed cells." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/4674.

Abstract:
Management in ubiquitous systems cannot rely on human intervention or centralised decision-making functions because systems are complex and devices are inherently mobile and cannot refer to centralised management applications for reconfiguration and adaptation directives. Management must be devolved, based on local decision-making and feedback control-loops embedded in autonomous components. Previous work has introduced a Self-Managed Cell (SMC) as an infrastructure for building ubiquitous applications. An SMC consists of a set of hardware and software components that implement a policy-driven feedback control-loop. This allows SMCs to adapt continually to changes in their environment or in their usage requirements. Typical applications include body-area networks for healthcare monitoring, and communities of unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance operations. Ubiquitous applications are typically formed from multiple interacting autonomous components, which establish peer-to-peer collaborations, federate and compose into larger structures. Components must interact to distribute management tasks and to enforce communication strategies. This thesis presents an integrated framework which supports the design and the rapid establishment of policy-based SMC interactions by systematically composing simpler abstractions as building elements of a more complex collaboration. Policy-based interactions are realised – subject to an extensible set of security functions – through the exchanges of interfaces, policies and events, and our framework was designed to support the specification, instantiation and reuse of patterns of interaction that prescribe the manner in which these exchanges are achieved. We have defined a library of patterns that provide reusable abstractions for the structure, task-allocation and communication aspects of an interaction, which can be individually combined for building larger policy-based systems in a methodical manner. We have specified a formal model to ensure the rigorous verification of SMC interactions before policies are deployed in physical devices. A prototype has been implemented that demonstrates the practical feasibility of our framework in constrained resources.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis is to investigate self-supporting rack structures and develop a methodology for their analysis, pre-design and detailed design starting from a real case study. This kind of structures is becoming more and more popular nowadays, as the level of automation which characterizes it. Its efficiency needs to be as high as possible: this is achieved maximizing storage space while minimizing cost, through an extensive optimization process during design. In fact, its modular nature can be translated into huge savings even for a small reduction of material used in one axe. Following Eurocodes and European Norms, one of these structure has to be designed and built in Belgium in 2020: it is the aim of this thesis to present a comparison between two different analysis methodologies, as well as developing a methodology to design, verify and optimize the whole structure guaranteeing safety and cost-effectiveness. The design and verification process needs to be automatized as much as possible, in order to simplify the optimization of the single elements and, in general, be capable of handle this kind of project faster and faster in the future. Some details will require further analysis: it is one goal to identify here all of them and propose solutions, which can include finite element simulations and experimental tests.

Kelly, Freya. "Nurses Supporting Cancer Survivors with the Self-Management of Symptoms." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36948.

Full text
Abstract:
To examine evidence-based interventions for nurses to use when supporting cancer survivors self-manage their symptoms. Part I: A systematic review to determine the effect of shared medical appointments (SMAs) on patients with a physical chronic illness (excluding diabetes mellitus), their healthcare providers and the healthcare system. Nine randomized controlled trials were included; one focused on breast cancer survivors. This trial was feasible and showed no difference in outcomes compared to usual care. Part II: A descriptive study to adapt and evaluate the acceptability of an evidence-informed symptom practice guide (SPG) for use by nurses for the assessment, triage, and management of patients experiencing dyspnea due to cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity. Guided by the CAN-IMPLEMENT© methodology, evidence from seven guidelines on heart failure was added to the original SPG. Eleven participants indicated the adapted SPG was comprehensive and easy to follow, and would be helpful for handling symptom calls from patients.

Nakamura, Yuki. "Supporting self-help efforts : CanDo, a Japanese NGO in Kenya." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/1967.

Full text
Abstract:
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are now key players in international development, but their activities have also been facing a large volume of criticism since around the turn of the century. The role of Northern NGOs in development assistance has been of particular concern due to a range of aspects of their work. Critical in the debates about NGOs are issues of legitimacy and of imposing outsiders’ views and priorities on their host communities through their development assistance. In such scepticism about Northern NGOs, there has been a shift to the current focus of large scale international NGOs’ activities which is now more on advocacy and emergency relief activities; more development assistance has been handed directly to local grassroots organisations or to partner organisations of international NGOs. The small scale Northern NGOs, which comprise the majority, have been in danger in the international arena. Since the 1990s, Japan has also witnessed the surge of NGOs working in international cooperation. The new type of NGOs, whose activities are inspired not by anti-government movements but by international development, grew rapidly with increased governmental assistance. These Japanese NGOs are, however, often small scale and mostly engaged in development assistance, unlike their counterparts in Western countries. The purpose of this study is to explore the activities, lifestyle, and development thinking of a single Japanese NGO in order to deepen our understanding of Japan’s international cooperation conducted by citizens from a wide range of aspects and to verify whether and how the Japanese philosophy of self-help efforts is put into practice in Kenya. Chapter 2 presents the methodology which is employed in the study. Chapter 3 looks at the origin and international trends of NGOs working in development through the relevant literature. The main focus is not put on an examination of NGOs’ national roles, rather it is placed on the transition of their role and relationship with states in general development issues. Chapter 4 examines community participation in development in the local Kenyan context. The chapter provides insights into the role of self-help and the way local self-help efforts have been directed by the national and local politics for development in Kenya. Chapter 5 looks at Japan’s official development assistance (ODA) in order to explore the conceptual and historical context of Japan’s international cooperation, as this has a considerable influence over Japanese NGOs. The chapter provides insights into the philosophy of self-help efforts in Japan’s ODA as well as on the influence of Japanese policy over the activities of Japanese NGOs. Chapter 6 investigates the systems and mechanisms of NGOs in Japan, including the origin and history of Japanese NGOs, the scale and scope of their activities, their funding system, and their relationships with their donors and amongst themselves, in addition to the interaction between the government and Japanese NGOs. Chapters 7 and 8 are the main body of this study and provide in-depth research on a Japanese NGO in Kenya: Community Action Development Organisation (CanDo). Although it is small when compared with International NGOs, CanDo has been drawing substantial attention in the Japanese international development community in these five years. The main purpose of these chapters is not to evaluate whether the activities of CanDo are effective or not, but rather to explore its philosophy of facilitating local self-help efforts and how the philosophy is put into practice in its activities in poor communities in Mwingi District, Kenya. Its philosophy is analysed through describing in detail its organisational characteristics, development thinking, and its relationships with the local authority and local community. The final chapter explores the implications of CanDo’s philosophy and practice in understanding Japanese international cooperation in Africa as well as the role of small international NGOs working on development activities with local communities.

Abstract:
A self-adaptive system aims at anticipating changes which occur in a complex environment and automatically deal with them at run time. Although a lot of work has been done on self-adaptive systems over the past decade but researchers have lack of knowledge on how the research results have contributed in improving of complex software systems. In addition, no systematic study has been performed so far on the claims along with the evidences associated with self-adaption. The concrete objectives of this thesis are to: (1)  assess the quality of current research in self-adaptive systems (2)  identify the focus of the research (3) what the expected claims are of self-adaption and to what extent these claimed benefits exist and (4) identify potential areas for future work in the field. For this purpose, various categories of 73 papers pertaining to SEAMS (2008-2010) were studied to obtain data related to 20 different items and after the concerted efforts, some research questions were framed for the collection of data.  The study description criterion were modified on the basis of results obtained out of the collected data from time to time which helped to modify the performance cycle through a continuous monitoring, resulting in to produce the accurate results at the end. This approach also enables the researcher how critically the papers can be studied/analyzed and how systematically the required data has been extracted from the papers through research questions and data items. The extracted data was then subsequently used to achieve all above mentioned objectives.       Numerous limitations during the study like observation of changed results due to human intervention or in case of conflict of opinions were faced. Secondly, this existing approach only dealt with SEAMS community and the results obtained from the extracted data may be different in case of dealing with other software engineering communities like ICAC (International Conference on Autonomic Computing) and SASO (Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing), which would be taken as a challenge for future work.

Abstract:

This mixed methods study was conducted in a large school system in Georgia. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast a variety of methods used to support new elementary teachers to increase both self-efficacy and retention. Traditional support methods such as teacher preparation, induction, mentoring, and administrator support were included in this study. In addition, minimally researched areas of new teacher support including instructional coaching, professional learning communities, observation/feedback, and online support were examined.

The data sources utilized in this study included an online new teacher survey, a new teacher focus group, and an administrative interview with the Executive Director for Human Resources Staffing for the school system. Based on the results, developing key partnerships between schools systems and teacher preparation institutions along with year-long student teaching experiences or residency programs is recommended to promote new teacher success. Additionally, the school system's own alternative teacher certification program exhibited positive results. Beginning teachers also expressed a desire for training on paperwork, student support meetings, and programs specific to the school system.

A common thread across all data sources was that support from people is extremely helpful to new teachers. In particular, mentoring and coaching were helpful across all three data sources. Moreover, online support including social networking and educational websites were shown to be extremely useful to novice teachers. Results also indicated that the opportunity to observe other teachers was tremendously beneficial and desired by 100 percent of new teachers who had not received that opportunity.

Moir, Jane. "Supporting diabetes self-management in persons with cognitive impairment after acquired brain injury." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2014. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/5634/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background. Individuals with cognitive impairment arising from acquired brain injury (ABI) are often supported to engage in diabetes self-management through verbal guidance provided by carers. Guide, developed by O’Neill and Gillespie (2008), is an automated verbal prompting system which aims to replicate the verbal guidance often provided to individuals with cognitive impairment by carers. Aims. The aim of this study is to investigate whether Guide can improve the ability of individuals with cognitive impairment to self-manage their diabetes. Methods. Participants were two individuals recruited from a specialist brain injury rehabilitation unit who had a diagnosis of diabetes and ABI. The study employed an ABA design using multiple baseline across participants Single Case Experimental Design (SCED) methodology. Results. Results indicated that the use of Guide significantly reduced the level of staff prompting needed for task completion when compared to baseline for both participants. For participant 1, use of Guide reduced the number of errors made during task performance and for participant 2 it increased the proportion of the task that was sequenced correctly. Applications. It is possible that Guide could be used more widely to support individuals with cognitive impairment (e.g. dementia, learning disability) and to support other complex behavioural sequences.

Forrest, Vic. "A qualitative enquiry into the process of supporting self-directed researchers with learning difficulties." Thesis, Brunel University, 2009. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/3870.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is concerned with the under-researched subject of supporting people with learning difficulties to be in control of their own self-advocacy group while undertaking self-directed research. Guided by the social model of disability and emancipatory disability research principles I supported a group of people with learning difficulties within a self-advocacy organisation throughout the course of their own self-directed research project. At the same time, drawing upon various sources of data, I reflexively studied and analysed my own support practice, constructing the critical ethnography that is this dissertation. There were two purposes for working in the above way: (a) to provide the most effective support I could for the researchers to gain and maintain control of their research group and (b) to analyse the processes and challenges involved in providing support for self-directed self-advocacy group members and researchers (in order to develop the literature in this area). Analysis of data revealed the following. Supporting self-directed researchers with learning difficulties requires a broad range of involved, interconnected interpersonal support skills. Working in this way can present supporters with unforeseen time-consuming tasks as well as intellectual and psychological challenges as they respond to the needs and requests of the supported group. Supporting people with learning difficulties to be in control in this way, where the balance of power is actively weighted in their favour, is not only complex it can lead to the supporter facing institutional pressures to assume control over the group, feelings of psychological discomfort or stress and ethical dilemmas. Anaysis of the data led me to conclude that drawing specific boundaries around supporter behaviour and monitoring or developing an actively non-authoritarian practice through a process of critical reflection can be an important aspect of providing consistent and effective support for self-directed researchers with learning difficulties.

Abstract:
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease whose incidence has increased with more than 200% during the past 20 years. The increasing number of type 2 diabetes patients could result in more patients suffering from lower quality of life and life threatening complications. Furthermore, the growing need of care will increase the load on healthcare. To counteract this effect, digital tools could be used to put more care responsibility on the patient.  The aim of this project was to find and implement the relevant features for a digital type 2 diabetes tool for newly diagnosed patients. The final goal was to encourage self-care, reduce anxiety and thus improve quality of life, while decreasing the risk of complications. The research process of this project consisted of five phases: literature study (to find relevant features and their clinical evidence), interviews (to find the desires of patients and practitioners), data analysis (to prioritise features), development of the features and evaluation of the tool.  The results showed that important features were documentation of blood glucose measurements, patient education, data transfer, communication and care plan overview, but even more importantwas the possibility to individualise the tool for different patients. The evaluation indicated that a clear care plan overview that was easy to understand could help the patient prioritise care activities. Furthermore, patients could be encouraged by reminders, seeing improvements and having continuous communication with healthcare. It was found that for positive clinical outcomes, high usability is essential. To reach patient acceptance the tool must be relevant and easy to use. It must also give valuable output, such as decision support for self-care or new knowledge. To reach practitioner acceptance the tool should be based on evidence based methods and integrate well with existing systems.  Finally it was concluded that the knowledge and technology needed to build a successful tool is already present, they only need to be put together and formulated in a way which is understandable and useful for both patients, caregivers and developers.

"Self – supporting Hierarchical Porous PtAg Alloy Nanotubular Aerogels as Highly Active and Durable Electrocatalysts." American Chemical Society, 2018. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A30955.

Abstract:
Developing electrocatalysts with low cost, high activity, and good durability is urgently demanded for the wide commercialization of fuel cells. By taking advantage of nanostructure engineering, we fabricated PtAg nanotubular aerogels (NTAGs) with high electrocatalytic activity and good durability via a simple galvanic replacement reaction between the in situ spontaneous gelated Ag hydrogel and the Pt precursor. The PtAg NTAGs have hierarchical porous network features with primary networks and pores from the interconnected nanotubes of the aerogel and secondary networks and pores from the inter-connected thin nanowires on the nanotube surface, and show very high porosities and large specific surface areas. Due to the unique structure, the PtAg NTAGs exhibit greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards formic acid oxidation, reaching 19 times higher metal based mass current density as compared to the commercial Pt black. Furthermore, the PtAg NTAGs show outstanding structural stability and electrochemical durability during the electrocatalysis. Noble metal based NTAGs are promising candidates for applications in electrocatalysis not only for fuel cells, but also for other energy related systems.

Morrison, Deborah. "Supporting self-management : development and evaluation of a digital resource for adults with asthma." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7350/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem: Around 300 million people worldwide have asthma and prevalence is increasing. Support for optimal self-management can be effective in improving a range of outcomes and is cost effective, but is underutilised as a treatment strategy. Supporting optimum self-management using digital technology shows promise, but how best to do this is not clear. Aim: The purpose of this project was to explore the potential role of a digital intervention in promoting optimum self-management in adults with asthma. Methods: Following the MRC Guidance on the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions which advocates using theory, evidence, user testing and appropriate modelling and piloting, this project had 3 phases. Phase 1: Examination of the literature to inform phases 2 and 3, using systematic review methods and focussed literature searching. Phase 2: Developing the Living Well with Asthma website. A prototype (paper-based) version of the website was developed iteratively with input from a multidisciplinary expert panel, empirical evidence from the literature (from phase 1), and potential end users via focus groups (adults with asthma and practice nurses). Implementation and behaviour change theories informed this process. The paper-based designs were converted to the website through an iterative user centred process (think aloud studies with adults with asthma). Participants considered contents, layout, and navigation. Development was agile using feedback from the think aloud sessions immediately to inform design and subsequent think aloud sessions. Phase 3: A pilot randomised controlled trial over 12 weeks to evaluate the feasibility of a Phase 3 trial of Living Well with Asthma to support self-management. Primary outcomes were 1) recruitment & retention; 2) website use; 3) Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) score change from baseline; 4) Mini Asthma Quality of Life (AQLQ) score change from baseline. Secondary outcomes were patient activation, adherence, lung function, fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), generic quality of life measure (EQ-5D), medication use, prescribing and health services contacts. Results: Phase1: Demonstrated that while digital interventions show promise, with some evidence of effectiveness in certain outcomes, participants were poorly characterised, telling us little about the reach of these interventions. The interventions themselves were poorly described making drawing definitive conclusions about what worked and what did not impossible. Phase 2: The literature indicated that important aspects to cover in any self-management intervention (digital or not) included: asthma action plans, regular health professional review, trigger avoidance, psychological functioning, self-monitoring, inhaler technique, and goal setting. The website asked users to aim to be symptom free. Key behaviours targeted to achieve this include: optimising medication use (including inhaler technique); attending primary care asthma reviews; using asthma action plans; increasing physical activity levels; and stopping smoking. The website had 11 sections, plus email reminders, which promoted these behaviours. Feedback during think aloud studies was mainly positive with most changes focussing on clarification of language, order of pages and usability issues mainly relating to navigation difficulties. Phase 3: To achieve our recruitment target 5383 potential participants were invited, leading to 51 participants randomised (25 to intervention group). Age range 16-78 years; 75% female; 28% from most deprived quintile. Nineteen (76%) of the intervention group used the website for an average of 23 minutes. Non-significant improvements in favour of the intervention group observed in the ACQ score (-0.36; 95% confidence interval: -0.96, 0.23; p=0.225), and mini-AQLQ scores (0.38; -0.13, 0.89; p=0.136). A significant improvement was observed in the activity limitation domain of the mini-AQLQ (0.60; 0.05 to 1.15; p = 0.034). Secondary outcomes showed increased patient activation and reduced reliance on reliever medication. There was no significant difference in the remaining secondary outcomes. There were no adverse events. Conclusion: Living Well with Asthma has been shown to be acceptable to potential end users, and has potential for effectiveness. This intervention merits further development, and subsequent evaluation in a Phase III full scale RCT.

Taylor, Whitney Dawn. "A Family Systems Perspective on Supporting Self-Determination in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities During Transitions." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39383.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation concerns the family context of self-determination in adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) during life transitions. Although self-determination is interpreted in different ways in different disciplines, the construct is frequently used to describe the attitudes and behaviours that allow people to feel autonomous and causal in their lives. Research on self-determination in adolescents and adults with ID has commonly occurred in community and special education sectors, with an emphasis on arranging supports for people with ID to develop component self-determination skills, like choice making, problem solving, and goal setting. From the perspective of organismic-dialectical theories, people develop and express self-determination through relationships and person-environment interactions at multiple system levels. Further research on the way family interactions and supports influence the self-determination of adults with ID is important. To address this need, this dissertation includes a qualitative study presented in two manuscripts and a quantitative study presented in one manuscript. The qualitative study explored processes and challenges in the family system during significant life transitions with an adult family member with ID. Families participated in semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations of daily activities every three to four months for one year. Manuscript 1 concerns the influence of family processes on the self-determination of two young adults with ID as they attained adult roles in the community. Parents were observed to model goal setting, encourage choice making, and scaffold new skills, which helped the young adults with ID to experience autonomous motivation in their transitions. Parents reported feeling unsure of the best way to promote their adult child’s independence while ensuring his or her safety. They tried to resolve this dilemma with open and honest communication. Most interestingly, families collaborated in choice making to the extent that every family member perceived autonomy in transition planning and implementation. Manuscript 2 concerns the influence of transition processes and challenges on the quality of life and resilience of four families with an adult family member with ID. Although families reported different transition types, they progressed through similar transition stages. They invested in quality of life and self-determination as a foundation, considered future support needs, pre-planned and actively planned transitions, implemented transitions, adjusted to new roles and routines, and reflected upon their growth. Although all families experienced challenges during their transitions, two families entered a state of crisis when they did not receive mental health and residential supports. Findings highlight that transitions are lifelong processes in the family system, and risk and protective factors at multiple system levels affect resilience and self-determination. The quantitative study, presented in Manuscript 3, considers that the family system functions within broader socioecological environments that include formal services for adults with ID. Community participation supports provide opportunities to develop self-determination in recreational, educational, and vocational activities. In a cohort of families requesting community participation supports, the vast majority of parents endorsed the expectation that this service would improve choice-making outcomes for their adult child with ID. Preliminary results suggest that the gender and prior choice-making experience of the adult with ID may be associated with the odds of parents endorsing this expectation. The General Discussion integrates the primary findings from each manuscript within a conceptual framework informed by self-determination theory, family systems theory, and family resilience models. This dissertation has theoretical implications for the way the self-determination construct is understood and applied in research with families with a family member with ID. Further, this dissertation reveals practical implications for supporting families with a family member with ID during important life transitions.

Abstract:

Relationships of entrepreneur vary automatically over time; however, entrepreneurs themselves are the ones who create relationships. This process requires self-motivated action in order to gain good relationships and trusts. In this research, the particular ways that entrepreneurs use to create relationships with customers, suppliers and financial institutions follow each step of interest, commitment, adaptation and trust. The authors find that entrepreneurs use both similar and different methods in each stage depending on type and size of their business. In addition, we examine how organizations supporting entrepreneurs to start business influence the networking of entrepreneurs. The authors select Idélab as our case study. During joining Idélab’s activities, the attendants would gain more relationships from both inside and outside of Idélab which are apart from their backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, the entrepreneurs attending Idélab reach more relationships than entrepreneurs who do not.

Doyle, Sarah. "Intricacies of professional learning in health care : the case of supporting self-management in paediatric diabetes." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/23993.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis offers a rethinking of the role for education as critical workplace pedagogy in complex problems of health care. Taking the case of paediatric diabetes, the study explored how health-care professionals learn the work of supporting children, and their parents, to self-manage the condition. By reconceptualising work problems as sociomaterial learning struggles, this research contributes new understandings of informal professional learning in everyday health-care provision. Data were generated through fieldwork in an outpatient clinic. Particular challenges of supporting self-management in this case were the difficulties of balancing policy aspirations for empowerment with biomedical knowledge about risks to immediate and long-term health. Tracing the materialisation of learning as it unfolded in moments of health-care practice showed professionals handling multiple and contradictory flows of information. Particular challenges were posed by insulin-pump technologies, which have specific implications for professional roles and responsibilities, and introduce new risks. A key insight is that professionals were concerned primarily with the highly complicated perpetual discernment of safe parameters within which children and their parents might reasonably be allowed to contribute to self-management. Such discernment does not readily correspond to the notion of empowerment circulating in the policies and guidelines intended to enable professionals to accomplish this work. As a result, this thesis argues that the work of discernment is obscured. Learning strategies evolve, but could be supported and extended by explicit recognition of the important work of learning as it unfolds in everyday practices of supporting self-management in paediatric diabetes. Most importantly, workplace pedagogies could be developed in ways that attune to the profound challenges and uncertainties that are at stake in these practices.

Wilson, Anthea. "Supporting student nurses by the educational use of self : a hermeneutic phenomenological exploration of the mentor experience." Thesis, Open University, 2012. http://oro.open.ac.uk/34526/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on a study of the lived experience of clinical nurses as mentors of student nurses in the workplace. Pre-registration nurse education, in which students must spend fifty percent of their time in practice, relies on a partnership between universities and health care providers and, crucially, the availability of practice mentors, able to support and assess practice learning. Within a hermeneutic phenomenological research methodology, twelve nurses described their experiences of mentoring through conversational interviews and event diaries which included ‘rich pictures’. The mixed methods provided openings for participants to talk about the harder-to-access elements of experience and generated multiple layers of rich data. Analysis of the data involved the application of different interpretive lenses: existentials in the care structure of Heidegger’s (1962) Dasein and the four lifeworld existentials (van Manen, 1997). For these respondents, the mentoring experience was rewarding, satisfying, frustrating, and even distressing at times. Being a mentor meant existing in worlds of ‘high stakes’, ‘hope for the nursing profession’ and ‘fragments’, governed by resource constraints, contextual demands and concern for others. Educational purposes dominated their being, revealing an essence, interpretively coined as ‘the educational use of self’, which meant that they were individually and authentically engaged in supporting and assessing learning. This study promotes greater understanding of mentoring practice and workplace learning, which can inform processes of recruitment, preparation and support of both students and mentors. Key insights are that mentors need support to work with complex and often hidden knowledge, including situations involving their intuitions.

Abstract:
The policy of inclusive education has changed the makeup of the Canadian classroom. Today's elementary school teacher is faced with the challenge of meeting the myriad classroom needs of their students, many of whom demonstrate disruptive classroom behaviours due to different underlying diagnoses. It is known that these behaviours have a large impact on a teachers' stress level. This increased stress can lead to reduced performance, dissatisfaction in performance, and lower self-efficacy. Only 13% of surveyed Canadian teachers felt they could manage the challenge of these behaviours. Preliminary studies of the Alert Program®, an innovative program which promotes the use of sensorimotor strategies to enable students to attain and maintain an appropriate level of arousal and self-regulation for learning, have shown effectiveness. Occupational Performance Coaching (OPC), an occupation and client centred approach, has been shown to be successful in helping adults meet their occupational goals. The primary objective of this master's thesis was to estimate the extent to which elementary school teachers' perceived performance, satisfaction of performance, and self-efficacy changed following participation in a one day training and weekly OPC on the use of tools for self-regulation of their students. This study used a multiple case replication study design. A cohort of regular classroom elementary school teachers (n=11) were recruited from the Quebec Eastern Townships School Board. Intervention took place over a period of 11.3 weeks. The intervention included a one day workshop, based on the Alert Program®, entitled Tools to Improve Attention and Self-regulation for Students in the Classroom and was followed by eight individual sessions of OPC with the teachers. The key outcome measures were the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), used to assess the teachers' perceived performance and satisfaction performance in supporting self-regulation of their students, and Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) to evaluate functional goal attainment. The Teachers' Self-Efficacy Scale-Classroom Management (TSES-CM) was used to measure teacher's self-efficacy in classroom behaviour management. Open ended questions were used in semi-structured interviews and a daily log was filled out by the teachers to collect data on the sensorimotor strategies implemented in their classroom. The results of this pilot study suggest that the use of a workshop and OPC sessions with teachers improved their perceived perception, satisfaction and self-efficacy when working with students with self-regulation issues. Perceived performance improved in 82% of participants, perceived satisfaction improved in 91% and self-efficacy improved in 73% of participants. Overall results on outcome measures indicated clinically significant change with a probability of response at 0.77 (CI=0.58, 0.85). The results of GAS indicate that progress was noted in teachers as well as students. Preliminary results suggest that the use of OPC as a school-based OT intervention with teachers can be beneficial.

Abstract:

Motivation is an important factor when trying to understand human behavior and well-being (Ryan & Deci, 2002), especially for teachers since the occupation involves making students perform certain behaviors (Reeve, 2002). Building on the Self-Determination Theory perspective of motivation the aim of this observational study was to describe and analyze the relation between teacher motivational behavior and student behaviors. The study was conducted over a three week period of observing one class in junior high school and their teachers. The results suggest that when teachers make students aware of themselves, their inner resources and support their choice, self-determined forms of motivation is increased. These findings are discussed as well as structured in a theoretical didactical model which describes how different conditions create different psychological responses.

Abstract:
In this thesis our aim was to understand social inequalities and quality of care in feminist initiatives supporting self-managed abortion in legally restrictive settings of Latin America and the Caribbean. The thesis includes four studies. In the first one, we conducted a multilevel analysis to examine social inequalities in access and utilization of a feminist telehealth service in Brazil. In the second one, we analyzed post-abortion complications and treatment among Latin American women who used Women on Web service. In the third one, we used a qualitative methodology to understand feminist activists’ perspectives and strategies around quality of abortion care. In the last study, also qualitative, we studied abortion trajectories, experiences with self-managed abortion and assessments of the quality of the care among women who were supported by Women Help Women in Chile. We found evidence of social inequalities linked to age, race, social class and territory, in abortion trajectories, experiences, access and outcomes. We also found that feminist activists contribute with novel elements to the conceptualization and practice of good quality abortion care, particularly in the domains of safety and patient-centeredness.

Abstract:
There is evidence that individual spirituality positively impacts health behaviors and health status, as well as the ability to recover from illness. Among Latinos, spirituality and belief in God may serve as a cultural resource and a source of social support, as well as coping mechanism for disease-related stress. This article describes the results of a qualitative study investigating the role of the lay health worker, or promotora, in serving as a spiritual helper to Mexican Americans with diabetes. Results demonstrated the centrality of spirituality in the daily life of clients. Promotoras utilized the spiritual orientation of their clients to stress personal responsibility for self care in partnership with God, in communal sharing about how spiritual concepts can be applied to one’s life, and by serving as spiritual counselors in times of crisis. Findings have implications for programs serving Mexican American communities.

Full text
Abstract:
The operational life of all-dielectric self supporting (ADSS) optical fibre cables installed on high voltage over-head power transmission lines is limited by sheath degradation caused by induced electrical activity on the cable's surface. The work presented in this thesis describes research completed to quantify this degradation. This has resulted in a novel analysis method being developed and used to associate product testing with field trial results. The analysis is based on evaluating the magnitude of recorded electrical activity and fitting an appropriate distribution to the data to describe relative electrical arcing power. This innovation was possible due to the completion of a comprehensive review of the theories dealing with the generation of the electrical activity, followed by a detailed analysis. Where appropriate, worked examples are given in the thesis to demonstrate these theories. As a result of this work three proposals have been made to simplify future analyses. They are: approximating the relevant variables to span related polynomial functions, relating capacitive coupling to the space potential, and the superposition of assumed functions. The work is supported by results presented of extensive practical testing and simulations carried out by the author. These include analyses of the resulting cable damage, some of which has not been discriminated between in previous work. The completed analysis of tested products has also identified, previously not quantified, degradation accelerants. The work classifies these accelerants into extrinsic installation and intrinsic product factors. The thesis presents and reviews the implication of the electrical degradation resistance of sheaths applied to slotted-core and advance multi-loose tube (MLT) optical fibre cable designs. This has lead to the evaluation of three generations of sheath technology, which varied from low smoke compound technology, through to bimodal polyethylene. The work also identifies specific methods to limit risk to products. They include the use of pre-blended materials and the need to assure both sheath surface finish quality and cable longitudinal water blocking. Finally, the thesis summarises the development of new and previously investigated proposed degradation mitigation systems. Selected possible solutions were then evaluated using tests and analysis methods developed by the author, and compared with those of other notable works. This has resulted in the filing of two patents. As a result of this research a solution has been trialed and proposed to the collaborating company. This will allow optical fibre cable to be installed in high potential fields for the prescribed lifetime, overcoming previous limitations.

Lombardi, Louise. ""I need to hear and speak and do" : an exploration of the self-efficacy of teaching assistants supporting pupils with autism in mainstream primary schools." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2016. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/100537/.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of children with autism (ASD) within UK schools is significant. 25.9% of pupils with a Statement of Special Educatonal Needs (SEN) or Education Health Care (EHC) plan have Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) identified as a primary need (DfE. 2016). Children in primary schools with ASD might be supported by teaching assistants (TAs) despite research which indicates that when this support is not appropriately planned or targeted, attainment might be reduced (Blatchford, Bassett, Brown, Martin et al. 2009; Farrell, Alborz, Howes, & Pearson, 2010) Self-efficacy (SE) impacts upon the way in which people feel, think and behave (Bandura, 1977). Four main sources of information for SE beliefs are postulated by Bandura (1997): mastery experiences; vicarious experiences; verbal or social persuasions; and physiological and affective states. Previous research has assessed SE in teachers of pupils with autism (Ruble, Toland, Birdwhistell, McGrew et al., 2013), TAs supporting pupils with ASD in secondary schools (Symes & Humphrey, 2011), and SE in TAs (Higgins & Gulliford, 2014), but there is no published research which examines SE in TAs supporting children with ASD in primary schools. A mixed methods design was employed to explore the SE of TAs using a three-phase approach. First, a focus group (N=8) was used to gain an understanding of the construct of SE in TAs supporting children with ASD. The data were then used to adapt the Autism Self Efficacy Scale for Teachers (ASSET) questionnaire (Ruble et al., 2013) producing a 36-item domain-specific tool for use with a wider population. This measure, named the TASCA (Teaching Assistants Supporting Children with Autism), was completed by 50 TAs. Phase 3 used semi-structured interviews with the 2 TAs gaining highest and 2 gaining lowest SE scores on the TASCA, in order 15 to provide further rich data in relation to the construct. Data were then thematically analysed in relation to Bandura’s (1997) four sources of SE. The TASCA questionnaire proved to be a highly reliable measure and warrants further development in line with the item analysis. The qualitative data identified that, in line with previous research literature, the role of the TA supporting a child with ASD remains ill-defined, training and support is low, and staff rely upon ad hoc approaches to manage the child on behalf of the teacher. The role can prove challenging, and emotional demands are significant. The implications of the findings for Educational Psychology practice and future research are considered.

Full text
Abstract:
Military cultural competence has gained attention due to the past 15 years of military conflict and ongoing deployment of troops around the globe. Returning veterans, particularly those who go on to experience homelessness, have reported negative experiences and adverse treatment from programs that were designed to support them. Those experiences have resulted in perceived barriers to access or use of such services. Researchers have established the need for increased levels of military cultural competence to develop rapport with veterans and their families when delivering community-based social and healthcare services. Bandura's self-efficacy theory was the theoretical framework of this study. This study examined the relationship between military cultural competence, socialization tactics, and perceived self-efficacy of service providers employed with Continuum of Care Program member organizations that served veterans experiencing homelessness. Data were collected utilizing a cross-sectional web-based survey. After conducting a bivariate correlation, a statistically significant relationship was found between military cultural competence levels, socialization tactics, and self-efficacy levels. After conducting multiple linear regression, it was found that socialization tactics did not moderate the relationship between military cultural competence levels on self-efficacy levels. Though moderation was not found, leadership of organizations that support veterans may want to consider these factors to inform onboarding and training decisions. Addressing behaviors and attitudes of service providers may support social change by reducing adverse treatment that creates barriers to access and use of programs and services.

Abstract:

From having relied on its employees in the interaction with customers, the service industry now move towards an increased adoption of technology to enhance the value of the service

offering to the customer. This development has also reached the public transport sector which is traditionally seen as low-tech.

In this study we investigate how the customers experience the use of high-tech supporting services within a low-tech context. The case that is used is the city-bus transport provider Karlstadsbuss who provide a high-tech supporting service called Live, which delivers realtime information on bus departures through a website, a WAPsite, and electronic boards at certain bus stops.

Focused group interviews were used to get in-dept information from commuters of how they perceive Live. Results show that respondents do not use Live website or WAPsite because the information is not worth the effort of use. Commuters question the service because many

buses do not run according to the Live-schedule. Still the commuters say they benefit from Live because it contributes alternative ways of finding departure times, and it presents an overview of departure options. However, if the information is in real-time or not is of

secondary importance.

Abstract:
This work claims to study the technical feasibility of using ferrocement panels as permanent self-supported formworks for execution of bridges on local roads. It is justified by changes in the production structure of agriculture in general that resulted in changing the type of traffic, impacting the service life of special engineering structure and also the limited capacity of infrastructure investments and technical capacity of municipalities to whom these systems are jurisdictional . The study was done by the development of theoretical models of a size which can be positioned with simple equipment and check its structural plates. The methodological approach included bibliographic and document analysis research. The theoretical development studies considered the reference group recognized research, relevant technical standards and analytical models already consolidated.

The thin films are used in a large number of industrial fields such as Micro- and Nano- Technology (MNT) or treatment of surfaces. They can be used either as layer structures, or to provide protection functions or functionalized surfaces. There are generally two types of thin layers deposited thin films and self-supporting thin layers. The objective of the work presented in this manuscript is to develop methods for mechanical characterization of elastic-plastic behavior of free-standing thin films and deposited. First, we present a microtensile test able to work on 750 nm thick layers and associated technical means. These tools allow to characterize the elastic-plastic properties and mechanical damage freestanding thin films. In a second step, we focus on the implementation of parametric identification methods associated with implementation of instrumented indentation testing in the context of characterizing the elastic-plastic behavior of the deposited thin film materials. The layers characterized in this study are multilayer NiCo In total thickness 22 microns and thin layers of aluminum produced from several procédées with thicknesses between 1 and 1.5 microns

Russell, Jae-eun Lee. "Supporting students' motivation in college online courses." Diss., University of Iowa, 2013. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2620.

Abstract:
Students' motivation has been identified as a critical factor for meaningful engagement and positive academic achievement in various educational settings. In particular, self-regulation strategies have been identified as important skills in online learning environments. However, applying self-regulation strategies, such as goal setting, strategic planning, and reflect performance takes significant effort. Without motivation, students will not enact these types of strategies. Autonomous self-regulation has been investigated in traditional classroom settings and there is ample empirical evidence of a significant relationship between autonomous self-regulation and engagement and academic achievement. However, such research was limited in online learning environments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affected students' autonomous or self-determined forms of regulation as defined in self-determination theory (SDT). The study examined the relations between students' self-regulated motivation and four other variables (students' interests in the course, students' perception of their instructor's interaction type, students' technology self-efficacy, and students' perception of the degree to which their online learning environment used constructivist-based pedagogy), and the interactions among these variables in college online courses. In addition, the study examined the relationship between students' autonomous forms of regulation and their engagement, learning achievement, interaction behaviors, and satisfaction in the online course. For students' interaction behaviors, the total number of authored and read messages, the total number of visits to the content page, the total number of visited topics in the content page, and total duration spent in the content page were examined. One hundred forty students in 19 online courses participated in this study. The results of hierarchical linear modeling analyses revealed: (a) Both environmental factors, instructors' autonomy-supportive interaction and learning environments using constructivist-based pedagogy predicted students' autonomous self-regulated motivation (b) Students' autonomous self-regulated motivation predicted students' self-reported engagement, achievement, and satisfaction (c) Two personal factors, interest in the course and technology self-efficacy did not predict students' autonomous self-regulation (d) Students' autonomous self-regulated motivation did not predict any interaction behaviors. The findings from this study are largely congruent with prior theory and research in the fields of academic motivation, self-determination, and online learning, which note that environmental factors, instructors' autonomy-supportive interaction and constructivist-based pedagogy significantly affect students' autonomous self-regulation in online learning environments.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate (1) how mathematics instructors develop their students’ metacognitive abilities concretely within mathematics instruction and (2) whether these teachers feel adequately prepared to develop their students’ metacognitive abilities. Qualitative email interviews with credentialed secondary school mathematics teachers in Sweden were used. Analysis of the participants’ interview responses indicate that the participants reported a limited use of the metacognitive teaching strategies described in the research. Although teacher responses indicated stress, frustration, and irritation and their responses indicated limited proficiency in their intuitive declarative metacognitive knowledge of thinking skills, whether or not teachers feel adequately prepared to develop their students’ metacognitive abilities cannot be completely answered by this study.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on assessing the impact of retrofitting dielectric All Dielectric Self-Supporting Cable (ADSS) to existing MV overhead line. This type of optical cable is a means of future strengthening of the communication infrastructure of the distribution network. However, its mechanical properties are significantly different from the properties ACSR cable, due to which its installation can be problematic in terms of meeting the requirements of the PNE 33 3301 standard. In practical part, this work deals with the design of the ADSS installation on the existing MV line and the determination of its impact based on the assessment of the results of this design.

Kaikkonen, H. (Harri). "Supporting rapid product development with agile development methodologies." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2018. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526219332.

Abstract:
Abstract Management of product development activities has become increasingly important, as cycle times of product development have shortened. Smaller product development projects are often conducted rapidly at companies based on customer or sales requests to answer the need for faster cycle times. However, this is often done without fully realizing the impact of the new projects on the larger project portfolio or organizational effectiveness. The main objective of this dissertation is to increase knowledge on the use of agile development methods in small, rapid product development projects, and on the implementation of a rapid product development model. The dissertation is formulated as a qualitative, inductive study based on the research results of four original publications and a summary combining the results. The results of the dissertation show that it is beneficial to separate a rapid product development process for certain types of customer- or sales-initiated projects. A new rapid development model with principles and guidelines is introduced to help organizations facilitate this separation. The implementation of the model can be supported with agile development practices, of which self-managing teams are studied in more detail. There is significant overlap between case companies’ perceived success factors for rapid development and self-management. The results imply that a functional rapid development model can be utilized as a strategic asset at companies. The results also provide empirical evidence that agile development practices can be utilized in product development. In addition to providing empirical evidence in scientific discussion about combining product development and agile software development practices, the results can be used to create better definitions of product development processes in general
Tätä mallia pystytään tukemaan ketterillä kehitysmenetelmillä, joihin liittyen on erityisesti tutkittu itseohjautuvia kehitystiimejä.
