Guynes, Sean, and Dan Hassler-Forest, eds. Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling. Amsterdam University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789462986213.

Full text
Abstract:
Star Wars has reached more than three generations of casual and hardcore fans alike, and as a result many of the producers of franchised Star Wars texts (films, television, comics, novels, games, and more) over the past four decades have been fans-turned-creators. Yet despite its dominant cultural and industrial positions, Star Wars has rarely been the topic of sustained critical work. Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling offers a corrective to this oversight by curating essays from a wide range of interdisciplinary scholars in order to bring Star Wars and its transmedia narratives more fully into the fold of media and cultural studies. The collection places Star Wars at the center of those studies’ projects by examining video games, novels and novelizations, comics, advertising practices, television shows, franchising models, aesthetic and economic decisions, fandom and cultural responses, and other aspects of Star Wars and its world-building in their multiple contexts of production, distribution, and reception. In emphasizing that Star Wars is both a media franchise and a transmedia storyworld, Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling demonstrates the ways in which transmedia storytelling and the industrial logic of media franchising have developed in concert over the past four decades, as multinational corporations have become the central means for subsidizing, profiting from, and selling modes of immersive storyworlds to global audiences. By taking this dual approach, the book focuses on the interconnected nature of corporate production, fan consumption, and transmedia world-building. As such, this collection grapples with the historical, cultural, aesthetic, and political-economic implications of the relationship between media franchising and transmedia storytelling as they are seen at work in the world’s most profitable transmedia franchise.

Sebastian, Mock. Part A Annotated Guide, 3 The Concept of Market Manipulation. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198811756.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the concept of market manipulation. In contrast to the prohibition of insider dealing, market manipulation is not a single act or set of different behaviours but more of a multi-layer phenomenon covering all kinds of behaviours generally not accepted in any market. In capital markets law, four different forms of market manipulation developed, which can also be found in the Market Abuse Regulation (and other European regulations). These are information-based manipulation, transaction-based manipulation, short selling, and other forms of manipulation. However, the Market Abuse Regulation does not refer expressly to each of these forms of market manipulation but defines market manipulation in its Article 12 in general.

Barlow, Tani. In the Event of Women. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021742.

Full text
Abstract:
In the Event of Women outlines the stakes of what Tani Barlow calls “the event of women.” Focusing on the era of the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century's Cultural Revolution, Barlow shows that an event is a politically inspired action to install a newly discovered truth, in this case the mammal origins of human social evolution. Highbrow and lowbrow social theory circulating in Chinese urban print media placed humanity's origin story in relation to commercial capital's modern advertising industry and the conclusion that women's liberation involved selling, buying, and advertising industrial commodities. The political struggle over how the truth of women in China would be performed and understood, Barlow shows, means in part that an event of women was likely global because its truth is vested in biology and physiology. In so doing, she reveals the ways in which historical universals are effected in places where truth claims are not usually sought. This book reconsiders Alain Badiou's concept of the event; particularly the question of whose political moment marks newly discovered truths.

Francis, Leslie. Is Surrogacy Ethically Problematic? Edited by Leslie Francis. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199981878.013.31.

Full text
Abstract:
Commercial surrogacy is widely criticized as exploitive, as baby selling, or as even trafficking in persons. Less well-explored questions concern whether surrogacy is problematic in itself, a form of bodily labor that it is impermissible for one person to perform for another. This chapter argues first that grounds advanced for judging surrogacy as impermissible bodily labor sweep too broadly. It then rejects claims that surrogacy impermissibly burdens the autonomy of the pregnant woman or the intended female parent, that surrogacy wrongly devalues the child-to-be, or that surrogacy disrespects the parent–child relationship. With appropriate protections against exploitation and coercion, both commercial surrogacy and altruistic surrogacy are ethically appropriate.
