Abstract:
This chapter assesses whether infants and children were considered persons in ancient Israel. The chapter demonstrates that biblical evidence for the personhood of children is sometimes contradictory. While many texts show that the securing of progeny was highly valued and that children were cared and mourned for, other texts lead one to question whether children were seen as persons at all. First, the evidence that some Israelites sacrificed infants raises questions about the personhood of children, as do texts that speak of fathers having the ability to sell their children and of children being punished for the sins of their fathers. On the whole, while the evidence for the personhood of children is mixed, there are good reasons to argue that, of the major social groups in ancient Israel, children were seen as having the least claim to personhood.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The publication of Awful Disclosures of the Hotel Dieu by Maria Monk captivated hundreds of thousands of Americans when it appeared in 1836. The runaway nun’s allegations against the convent “inmates,” including rape, torture, murder, and infanticide, prompted demands to outlaw convents in the United States. Testimonies and convent investigations held public interest. Despite the discovery that Monk was a former prostitute and not a nun, Awful Disclosures continued to sell well, inspiring a host of spin-offs. Monk herself fell into a life of poverty and crime before dying at the young age of thirty-two alone in prison. She never profited from the book that bore her name, but she helped launch a campaign that permeated the country for the next three decades. This chapter traces the rise and fall of Maria Monk, the controversy of her book, and the culture in which these events unfolded.

Abstract:
Already meaningful, US worker ownership can be expanded with public policies. The US spends about $1 trillion every five years on tax incentives for businesses. To expand worker ownership, the White House could develop an Office of Broad-Based Capitalism. Stock market companies should only be allowed deductions for executive pay if they have a broad-based worker ownership plan for all workers. Moreover, all Federal business tax subsidies could be conditioned on a broad-based worker ownership plan. However, worker ownership will never spread until earlier tax incentives for Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) in stock market companies repealed by the first President George Bush, are reinstated with additional encouragements for all companies to make stock grants to workers. Finally, Congress needs to make it easier for small business people retiring to sell the company to the workers and for private equity firms to spin off their portfolio companies to the workers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Begun by Craig Newmark as an e-mail to some friends about cool events happening around San Francisco, craigslist is now the leading classifieds service on the planet. It is also a throwback to the early Internet. The website has barely seen an upgrade since it launched in 1996. There are no banner ads. The company doesn't profit off your data. This book explores how people use craigslist to buy and sell, find work, and find love—and reveals why craigslist is becoming a lonely outpost in an increasingly corporatized web. The book looks at the site's history and values, showing how it has mostly stayed the same while the web around it has become more commercial and far less open. It examines craigslist's legal history, describing the company's courtroom battles over issues of freedom of expression and data privacy, and explains the importance of locality in the social relationships fostered by the site. More than an online garage sale, job board, or dating site, craigslist holds vital lessons for the rest of the web. It is a website that values user privacy over profits, ease of use over slick design, and an ethos of the early web that might just hold the key to a more open, transparent, and democratic Internet.

Moss, Eloise. Night Raiders. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198840381.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Night Raiders: Burglary and the Making of Modern Urban Life in London, 1860–1968 is the first history of burglary in modern Britain. Until 1968, burglary was defined in law as occurring only between the ‘night-time’ hours of nine p.m. and six a.m. in residential buildings. Time and space gave burglary a unique cloak of terror, since burglars’ victims were likely to be in the bedroom, asleep and unawares, when the intruder crept in, prowling near them in the darkness. Yet fear sometimes gave way to sexual fantasy. Eroticized visions of handsome young thieves sneaking around the boudoirs of beautiful, lonely heiresses emerged alongside tales of violence and loss in popular culture, confounding social commentators by casting the burglar as criminal hero. Night Raiders charts how burglary lay historically at the heart of national debates over the meanings of ‘home’, experiences of urban life, and social inequality. This book explores intimate stories of the devastation caused by burglars’ presence in the most private domains, showing how they are deeply embedded within broader histories of capitalism and liberal democracy. The fear and fascination towards burglary were mobilized by media, state, and market to sell insurance and security technologies, whilst also popularizing the crime in fiction, theatre, and film. Cat burglars’ rooftop adventures transformed ideas about the architecture and policing of the city, and post-war ‘spy-burglars’ theft of information illuminated Cold War skirmishes across the capital. More than any other crime, burglary shaped the everyday rhythms, purchases, and perceptions of modern urban life.

Benger Alaluf, Yaara. The Emotional Economy of Holidaymaking. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198866152.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
It is often taken for granted that holiday resorts sell intangible commodities such as freedom, enjoyment, pleasure, and relaxation. But how did the desire for a ‘happy holiday’ emerge, how was ‘the right to rest’ legitimized, and how are emotions produced by commercial enterprises? To answer these questions, The Emotional Economy of Holidaymaking explores the rise of popular holidaymaking in late-nineteenth-century Britain. Drawing on a wide range of texts, including medical literature, parliamentary debates, advertisements, travel guides, and personal accounts, the book unravels the role emotions played in British spa and seaside holiday cultures. Introducing the concept of an ‘emotional economy’, Yaara Benger Alaluf traces the overlapping impact that psychological and economic thought had on moral ideals and performative practices of work and leisure. Through a vivid account of changing attitudes toward health, pleasure, social class, and gender in late-Victorian and Edwardian Britain, she explains why the democratization of holidaymaking went hand in hand with its emotionalization. Combining the history of emotions with the sociology of commodification, the book offers an innovative approach to the study of the leisure and entertainment industries and a better understanding of how medicalized conceptions of emotions influenced people’s dispositions, desires, consumption habits, and civil rights. Looking ahead to the central place of tourism in twenty-first-century societies and its relation to stress and burnout, The emotional economy of holidaymaking calls on future research of past and present leisure cultures to take emotions seriously and to rethink notions of rationality, authenticity, and agency.
