Abstract:
Samuel Selvon (1923-1994) is a great pioneer in Creole literature. His writing in the Moses trilogy is very representative because of his preoccupation with issues of identity and culture. The Lonely Londoners, published in 1956, and Moses Ascending, published in 1975, are two of them. These two books telling Creole immigrants’ story have been recognized as a great masterpiece in Caribbean literature, which have a far-reaching influence on postcolonial literature. This thesis attempts to employ Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity to illustrate the Creoles’ struggle against colonization and the construction of political hybridity. The thesis consists of three parts. Part One is Introduction, which presents a short introduction to the author Samuel Selvon, his two works, the theoretical framework. Part Two depicts the process of the Creoles’ struggle against colonization in political civilization. In the aspect of politics, the Creoles experience the process from unawareness of politics to pursuing their political dream. They attempt to construct their own political system on the basis of the British mode. Part Three is Conclusion. Based on the above analyses, the thesis draws the conclusion that different cultures can influence each other. The effective way to realize decolonization is the construction of political hybridity.

Si l’hétérolinguisme littéraire est aujourd’hui une chose reconnue et un phénomène amplement étudié par les critiques, les défis qu’implique la traduction, au sens le plus concret, de cette esthétique ont été encore peu abordés. Cet article tente d’apporter une contribution dans ce sens. Fondé sur un cas particulier, ma tentative de traduire en français The lonely Londoners, roman de l’écrivain indo-trinidadien Samuel Selvon, il interroge les enjeux esthétiques et éthiques de la pratique de la traduction littéraire dans un contexte minoritaire et un paradigme interprétatif fondé sur la valorisation de l’hybridité linguistique et culturelle des œuvres. Cette étude débouche sur une critique des positions défendues par Antoine Berman et Lawrence Venuti. Elle vise plus particulièrement à souligner que la traduction de l’hybridité linguistique dans le littéraire soulève des questions et exige des prises de position allant bien au-delà du choix entre le travail sur la lettre/foreignizing ou la traduction ethnocentrique/domesticating. Pour les traductologues, l’étude de ces phénomènes littéraires invite à concevoir le processus de traduction selon une perspective moins binaire et à repluser de la notion même de sujet traduisant.

Samuel Selvon (1923-1994) is a representative writer in Caribbean literature. His Moses trilogy is famous for the preoccupation with issues of identity. My paper employs Homi Bhabha’s theory of hybridity to construct the identification of Creoles’. From the perspective of economic, The Lonely Londoners and Moses Ascending deal with the fractured and disjointed economic activities on the Londoners and Moses’ economic life, which cover from general economic life to personal economic behavior. The hybridization of economic activities helps Creoles walk out of the tough period and be able to support themselves. It is an effective way for them to be free from colonization economically.

Abstract In the postcolonial context, language represents one of the crucial tools of cultural communication and is therefore often a subject of heated discussion. Since language constitutes the framework of cultural interaction, postcolonial authors often challenge the privileged position of Standard English within their writing by modifying and substituting it with new forms and varieties. The Trinidad-born writer Sam Selvon belongs to a handful of Caribbean authors who initiated linguistic experiments in the context of Caribbean literature and is considered one of the first Caribbean writers to employ dialect in a novel. His 1956 novel The Lonely Londoners reflects the possibilities of vernacular experimentation and thus communicates the specific experience of a particular cultural group in an authentic way.

This paper investigates the resistance of immigrants to cultural dominance of London society in The Lonely Londoners, a postcolonial novel by Sam Selvon. The Lonely Londoners (1956) depicts the miserable life of Caribbean people who migrated in hope to find better condition of living than their countries. The paper furnishes a theoretic ground for analyzing the discourse of the novel which presents the subject of resisting dominant culture throughout events and language used by the novelist. The paradigm of immigrants, their trauma and shock have always been the spot line of discussion after WWII. Through the colonial history there was a dominant discourse of Western cultural superiority imposed on colonized, with the postcolonial era a different discourse emerged through intellectual presentations such as Fanon, Said, Bhabha ideas and others who enlightened literary theory and criticism and theorized resistance and cultural identity. Thus, this paper will critically analyze the discourse of resistance of Postcolonial people in exile to ascertain their existence and identity. Olive Senior has become a significant literary voice within Caribbean literature and the Caribbean diaspora, often providing light, sharp, subtle, and emotionally laden stories and poems of childhood and belonging. As she describes here, her work remains “embedded” in Jamaica, including its soundscape and its ecology, and stretches across fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children’s literature. For decades she has enjoyed a growing international audience, and her work is taught in schools in the Caribbean as part of an evolving literary curriculum. Senior’s short stories, the primary focus of this discussion, are especially well known for their enchanting, vibrant, and insightful children and child narrators — a trait that situates Senior’s work in relation to other famed Caribbean authors (Sam Selvon, Michael Anthony, Jamaica Kincaid, Merle Collins, and many more). In this interview, explorations of some of her young female voices are set within Denise DeCairns Narain’s sense of Senior’s “oral poetics”, and are also explored in relation to issues of wealth, privilege, and emotional sincerity. Senior’s work — fictional and non-fictional — is also heavily invested in ideas of land, labour, and migrancy, and so her recent and striking short story “Coal”, from her latest collection The Pain Tree (2015), is considered alongside her enormously impressive historical study of the role of West Indian migrant labourers in the building of the Panama Canal, entitled Dying to Better Themselves (2014).

Résumé The Lonely Londoners en français : l'épreuve du métissage ߞ En 1956, l'écrivain trinidadien Sam Selvon (1923-1994) publiait The Lonely Londoners, un roman rédigé intégralement dans une variété de langue jusque là stigmatisée et confinée au domaine dialogal : le vernaculaire créole trinidadien. Bien qu'il fasse aujourd'hui partie des « classiques » de la littérature anglo-caribéenne, ce roman n'a toujours pas été traduit en français. À partir d'une étude de la matérialité puis des fonctions textuelles de cette représentation, l'essai révèle que si The Lonely Londoners offre un exemple original de créolisation littéraire, sa traduction suppose quant à elle la représentation d'un français créolisé qui, en conflit apparent avec les normes du polysystème cible et les projets politico-linguistiques des élites franco-antillaises, n'a pas encore eu droit de cité dans le littéraire. Constatant l'existence d'équivalents micro-textuels aux marqueurs de créolisation présents dans l'original, l'auteure suggère que les enjeux sous-tendant la traduction d'un tel roman ne peuvent se définir en termes d'authenticité ou bien de choix entre une stratégie traductionnelle de résistance ou de transparence. En effet, s'inspirant à la fois des langues-cultures trinidadienne et britannique, The Lonely Londoners oblige à sortir des dichotomies traditionnelles et à penser la traduction comme un processus tripartite entre langues-cultures française-anglaise-antillaise. Loin de remplacer une dialectique étrangère (Angleterre-Caraïbes) par une dialectique domestique (France-Antilles), ou de remodeler l'étranger à traduire en fonction des termes du débat dans le contexte cible, la traduction vient en quelque sorte perturber ce débat et proposer de nouvelles avenues en matière de créolisation littéraire.

Studies on comparative literature have been fragmentary concentrating on one or two aspects of the thematic concerns of novels without emphasizing the concepts of divergent and convergent intertextuality. This paper aims to revisit Selvon’s The Lonely Londoners re-reading it in dialogue with Naipaul’s novel The Mimic Men. The selected novels are controversial. Criticism deployed on all fronts conveys the pluralities and oppositions that are in fact the novels’ hallmarks. Yet, the aspects criticized attest to, and confirm, the authors’ taking of the less trodden track. The comparative analysis within the scope of this paper will show that Naipaul’s and Selvon’s fictional representations of creolized Trinidadian and English societies highlight specific cultural and linguistic aspects and that intertextuality is either convergent or divergent. For instance, the structure of Naipaul’s text takes as much from Caribbean orature and the wake of Caribbean plantation culture. However, Selvon’s novel takes the form of flashbacks. Naipaul innovates and transforms Selvon’s structure to generate a Caribbean context, par excellence. Traces of Selvon’s style are present in Naipaul’s corrosive voice of representing Caribbean identity. Naipaul brings to an apotheosis the creative force already illustrated in the remarkable works of Selvon. This paper aims to track these traces and foreground the idea that texts can speak to each other. More significantly, this paper assesses the main characters’ fates to re-question the status of creoles, a status deliberately put between parentheses, denying them the right to voice their hybrid identities. Above all, the close textual reading of Galahad’s and Singh’s stories is meant to value the trope of intertextuality.

This study aimed to compare heterosexual mixed-weight (one overweight and one healthy weight partner) and matched-weight couples on their relationship functioning and eating behaviors. One hundred seventy- four adult couples were recruited and grouped based on their body mass index. They completed a survey online. It was expected that mixed-weight couples would report poorer marital satisfaction and more eating related problems than matched-weight couples, especially among couples with overweight women and healthy weight men. Results showed that men from mixed-weight couples were less satisfied of their relationship and their sexuality compared to men from matched-weight couples. Thus, a gap between partners’ weight seems to be associated with men’s dissatisfaction, no matter which partner is overweight. However, this weight asymmetry has no impact on women’s satisfaction. These findings provide an informative contribution to scientific literature on the impact of weight asymmetry on couple relationship.

Le mot ptyx se lit chez Mallarmé dans un poème publié en 1887. Pour en établir la signification, il faut réexaminer de près la distinction saussurienne entre signifié et chose signifiée. Quant au signifiant, il dépend de la linguistique indo-européenne, dans la version qu’en avait donnée Franz Bopp. Mallarmé l’a pratiquée ; on en a la preuve par Les Mots anglais. L’article tente de montrer que la séquence /ptyks/ permet d’obtenir par permutations et modifications l’intégralité de l’ossature consonantique de tous les mots indo-européens possibles. A partir de là, on peut éclairer la fonction poétique du ptyx au sein du poème et le poème lui-même; sur tous ces points, l’hypothèse des anagrammes se révélera féconde.

RÉSUMÉ Brentano, expert et continuateur de l’ontologie aristotélicienne, traite du problème métaphysique de l’individuation dans un petit nombre d’écrits (réunis dans le recueil intitulé Kategorienlehre ). Il retient pour ce problème une solution ordinairement rejetée, l’individuation par le lieu (qui serait de l’ordre de l’accident dans la perspective d’Aristote et comme tel impropre à fournir le principe de l’individuation ). À ce titre, il occupe une position originale. La notion de lieu, cependant, tout comme plus généralement la notion de l’accident, ressort tout à fait transformée des analyses de Brentano : le lieu devient une détermination substantielle, non accidentelle, des corps. Dans des écrits tardifs, Brentano étend son analyse du lieu à une cosmologie qui n’admet qu’une seule substance corporelle étendue, dont les corps particuliers sont les accidents.
