Abstract:
Alzheimer's Disease is characterized by a general decline in cognitive functioning. Although phonology are relatively unaffected, patients with Alzheimer's Disease have been reported to have deficits of semantic memory. Thirteen patients with dementia, five of whom had a confirmed diagnosis of dementia, participated in the study. The purpose of this investigation was to replicate a study performed by Mark Byrd (1984), using Alzheimer's Disease patients. Subjects were presented with category-word decision pairs, for which the task was to decide if the word was an exemplar of the category, and c

This study is designed to study the extent of semantic memory deficit in schizophrenia, its nature, and its correlates, in community-based schizophrenic patients using a semantic memory battery. The patients’ performance was compared with that of matched controls. About six months later, the same cohort was tested again using the same battery. Patients’ performance was analysed using the criteria proposed by Warrington and Shallice (1979), to decide whether this deficit conforms into an access or store type disorder. Semantic memory includes vocabulary and word meanings, conceptual information, and general facts about the world (Tulving, 1972). According to the standard view of semantic memory in cognitive neuroscience, the hippocampus is necessary to first acquire new semantic information (Gabrieli, Cohen, & Corkin, 1988), but these representations are then consolidated in the neocortex and become independent of the hippocampus with time (McClelland, McNaughton, & O'Reilly, 1995). Semantic memory represents our general knowledge about the world. The formation of semantic representations requires three key computational challenges: i) integrating information in a time- and modality-invariant fashion, ii) abstracting statistical regularities, and iii) assimilating new information into existing semantic networks. All three processes have been suggested to benefit from sleep-dependent memory consolidation. During sleep, memories are repeatedly reactivated, which is assumed to cause a reorganisation, such that memories are integrated into long-term memory and qualitatively a
