Tansley, Robert Hugh. "The multimedia thesaurus : adding a semantic layer to multimedia information." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2000. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/253833/.

Abstract:
The digital computer has greatly increased our capacity for storing and accessing information. The internet, and particularly the World Wide Web, have vastly increased the amount of information available to us. Information retrieval and hypermedia research has greatly reduced the time and effort required to fulfill a searcher's information need; however, problems still remain. To access multimedia information, text metadata must usually be assigned to the multimedia objects, requiring an (often prohibitively) large amount of time and effort. Abstract:
Thesauri are important tools for many Natural Language Processing applications. Roget's Thesaurus is particularly useful. It is of high quality and has been in development for over a century and a half. Yet its applications have been limited, largely because the only publicly available edition dates from 1911. This thesis proposes and tests methods of automatically updating the vocabulary of the 1911 Roget’s Thesaurus. I use the Thesaurus as a source of training data in order to learn from Roget’s for the purpose of updating Roget’s. The lexicon is updated in two stages. First, I develop a me

Abstract:
Services that rely on the semantic computations of users’ natural linguistic inputs are becoming more frequent. Computing semantic relatedness between texts is problematic due to the inherit ambiguity of natural language. The purpose of this thesis was to show how a sentence could be compared to a predefined semantic Definite Clause Grammar (DCG). Furthermore, it should show how a DCG-based system could benefit from such capabilities. Our approach combines openly available specialized NLP frameworks for statistical parsing, part-of-speech tagging and word-sense disambiguation. We compute the s

Lexical-semantic resources, including thesauri and WORDNET, have been successfully incorporated into a wide range of applications in Natural Language Processing. However they are very difficult and expensive to create and maintain, and their usefulness has been severely hampered by their limited coverage, bias and inconsistency. Automated and semi-automated methods for developing such resources are therefore crucial for further resource development and improved application performance. Systems that extract thesauri often identify similar words using the distributional hypothesis that similar w

Les folksonomies, résultant de l'usage de plateformes de social tagging, souffrent d'un manque de précision qui les rend difficile à exploiter pour la naviguation. Cette thèse présente notre approche multi-points de vue de l'enrichissement sémantique des folksonomies. The approach introduces a thesaurus-based semantic classification model automatically learning semantic relations for classifying adjective-noun (A-N) and verb-noun (V-N) collocations into different categories. Abstract:
Semantic distance is a measure of how close or distant in meaning two units of language are. A large number of important natural language problems, including machine translation and word sense disambiguation, can be viewed as semantic distance problems. The two dominant approaches to estimating semantic distance are the WordNet-based semantic measures and the corpus-based distributional measures. In this thesis, I compare them, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and identify the limitations of each. This thesis argues that estimating semantic distance is essentially a property of concept
