Abstract:
Issues around the cultural fairness of cognitive tests and their administration are becoming increasingly important as the global spread of neuropsychological practice quickens. Most of these tests are developed and standardized in high-income countries of the global north, and so when used in low- and middle-income countries (LAMICs) of the global south they are susceptible to influence by non-organic factors. Of relevance for this thesis is that these factors include language of test administration (e.g., whether the test is administered in the participant's home language or language of educ

The study investigated an organized semantic fluency task, (the Controlled Animal Fluency Task - CAFT) as a measure of executive functioning (EF) in adults, and the relationship with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Participants (N = 266) consisted of a clinical sample (n = 142) utilizing neuropsychological assessment data collected at an outpatient psychological center, and a community sample (n = 124). The clinical sample was a heterogeneous mixed neurological group including a variety of health conditions and comorbid anxiety and depression. The CAFT Animals by Size demonstra

Baddeley and Hitch (1974; Baddeley, 1986, 2000) propose that coding in verbal short-term memory is phonological and that semantic codes are employed in long-term memory. Semantic coding in short-term memory has been investigated to a far lesser degree than phonological codes and the findings have been inconsistent. Some theorists propose that semantic coding is possible (e.g. Nairne, 1990) while other suggest that semantic factors act during recall (e.g. Saint-Aubin & Poirer, 1999a). The following body of work investigates whether semantic coding is possible in short-term memory and examines w

Abstract:
The research on bilingual language processing explores two main avenues of relevance to the present study: lexico-semantic access and cognitive control. Lexico-semantic access research investigates the manner in which bilingual individuals retrieve single words from their lexical system. Healthy bilingual individuals can manipulate their lexico-semantic access to accommodate settings in which code- or language-switching is expected. Alternatively, they can manipulate their lexico-semantic access to speak only their first (L1) or second (L2) languages. Cognitive control, also known as executive

The types of errors produced during category generation tasks may reveal the boundaries of these experiences and the ways in which they are organized into lexical networks. Examining the errors made by bilingual children with and without language impairment (LI) and bilingual adults may help to distinguish the effects of ability versus experience on the development and organization of lexical-semantic categories.
