Abstract:
The karyotype of Semaprochilodus insignis and Semaprochilodus taeniurus were analyzed through the conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding, and the nucleolar organizer regions. The diploid number is the same (2n = 54) in both species, but S. taeniurus shows a chromosomic system of the ZZ/ZW type. This and some other differences between the two karyotypes will be useful in further studies on the possible hybrid origin of the "jaraqui açú," a low frequency form that is observed together with S. insignis and S. taeniurus. Key words: fish, ZZ/ZW system, constitutive heterochromatin, nucleolar organizing regions.

Abstract:
A myxosporean infecting the gill filaments of the freshwater teleost Semaprochilodus insignis collected in the TrombetasRiver (Central Amazonian Region, Brazil) is described using light and electron microscopy. The spores were ovoid infrontal view with round extremities and measured 15.4 ± 0.6μm in total length, 12.4 ± 0.5μm wide and 8.1 ± 0.7μmthick; the spore valves (up to 0.4μm) were surrounded by an uniform dense layer with variable thickness up to ~1.0μm)due to the presence of a complex network of anastomosed microfibrils closely adherent to the valves. Two symmetric polarcapsules measured 5.9 ± 0.4μm long and 3.4 ± 0.5μm wide, each having a polar filament with 7-8 coils slightly obliquelyto the longitudinal axis of the polar capsule. The polar capsule wall measured ~0.4μm thick and was constituted by a hy-aline substance (~0.25μm thick) surrounded by a layer of electron dense granular material (~0.15μm thick). In this paper the Amazonian region, which was previously described based on light microscopy (Eiras et al. 2005b).we present, by the first time, ultrastructural aspects of the spores of Myxobolus insignis found in a teleost collected from

Abstract:
Amazonia is considered to host some of the more productive freshwater fisheries of the world, and these are of key importance to the local population. Accordingly, fishing activity needs to be studied to evaluate its dynamics, so that long-term sustainability of the resource can be assured the fishing. The objective of the current study, therefore, was to analyze seasonal and spatial variation in the production of fish landed in the city of Manacapuru, in Central Amazonia. The landing data was collected daily from January to December 2012 at the main port of landing in Manacapuru, Amazonas, Brazil. Results indicate that lakes were most frequently visited by fishermen, but that rivers had higher catch values. In total, 39 species of fish were landed, with jaraqui escama grossa (Semaprochilodus taenirus) and jaraqui escama fina (Semaprochilodus insignis) being the species most exploited by fishermen. Landing had a seasonal character, with higher values in the rising and high water periods. Significant differences were observed between the different seasonal periods, with peak-flood period having the highest catch per unit effort (CPUE) values. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed that fishing gear varied according to the fishing environment and exploited species.

Abstract:
Information on larval fish feeding is essential for understanding their trophic relations, including the management in conditions totally or partially controlled by humans. An experiment was designed to evaluate the larval diets of three commercially important species. Four varzea-lakes and the adjacent river were sampled with bongo and hand nets from January 1993 to November 1995. Larval diets were evaluated by length-classes and capture sites, and were tested by two factor ANOVA. The larvae were feeding in all habitats, except in the flooded forests. The three species had different diets, which varied with their length and lake. The rotifers were the main initial food item of the three species, replaced by fish larvae in Brycon cephalus, cladocerans in Triportheus elongatus and detritus in Semaprochilodus insignis. The increase of the ingestion limit, as the larvae grew, was higher than the increase in the consumed prey size for the three species.

Abstract:

Abstract:
