The article analyzes the structural and semantic features of semelfactive verbs in the English and Uzbek languages. In the process of analysis, the quantum values of the semelfactive verbs, the meanings related to the subject, the influence of lexical means on the emergence of multiple semantics are compared. The comparison of semelfactive verbs in English and Uzbek is explained by the identification of possibilities of broadening the lexical-semantic meanings of verb lexemes in these languages. In the Uzbek language, iterative meanings are present in the semantics of verb lexemes.

We describe in detail how semantic behavior of these derivations depends on the actional type of the verbal stem. We show how this analysis allows to explain the variety of observed interpretations of the verbal derivatives.

The Category of Semelfactivity in Polish Verbs
Iterativity occurs in opposition to semelfactivity; when no contrast is present, these terms lose their meaning. Iterativity may be difficult to perceive in verbs such as robić ‘to do’, smucić się ‘to be sad’, malować ‘to paint’, which can be used both in an iterative and a semelfactive capacity. It is therefore worthwhile to consider the problem of the opposition between iterativity and semelfactivity; it is worthwhile to investigate the morphological form of verbs which refer to actions that only happen once; it is worthwhile to examine th

This article deals with a group of verbs with a quadriliteral root pattern that consists of the repetition of the two-consonant element - С1С2С1С2: e.g., <em>clcl</em> &lsquo;ring&rsquo;, <em>brbr</em> &lsquo;blabber&rsquo;. Previous research proposed such semantic characteristics for this group as iteration, repetition, event internal pluractionality. All of them pointed out that there is no common denominator for all members of this group. All these studies examined the С1С2С1С2 verb group either synchron

My ongoing investigation of the role of Aktionsart in the interpretation and translation of Russian sentences with converb constructions (cf. Krave forthc.) suggests that the lexical aspect of a particular converb construction in the source data (Russian) may trigger a specific interpretation restricting the range of possible translation patterns found in the target data (i.e. English and Norwegian). For example, it was found that coordinate clauses (e.g. VP coordination – by means of the conjunction ‘og’ (‘and’) linking the main event and the event expressed by the converb) occur most frequen

We present a universal quanti?er analysis of for-adverbs which builds on the notion of context-determined temporal partitions (Deo 2009) and intermediate distributivity (Schwarzschild 1996; Champollion 2010a, b). In contrast to the measure function analysis, this analysis places neither selectional restrictions on the arguments of for-adverbs, nor does it appeal to type-shifting coercion operators in accounting for iterative and imperfective readings associated with them. The proposal improves on earlier quanti?cational analyses in dealing with the minimal parts problem and the scopal restrict

Abstract:
The present paper discusses the aspectual class of ‘semelfactives’, which comprises expressions that introduce eventualities with inherent boundaries, often a very short duration, but no lexically defined change of state, e.g., ‘flash’ and ‘cough’. After reviewing previous analyses of semelfactives (including their integration into an overall system of aspectual classification), an analysis of semelfactives that treats them as denoting singleton (rather than iterated) eventualities will be defended. As a challenge for this analysis of semelfactives, semantic construction of semelfactives with

The study of aspect meaning is not only based on the combination of markers with verbs, but also needs to extend to the whole situation. To establish the aspect meaning of a situation we need to pay attention to the situation type, the verb type, the aspectual marker as well as the surrounding arguments. The situation types are classified into the two main types: the stative situations and the dynamic situations. In particular, the stative situations include the individual level states and the stage level states. The dynamic situations consist of the activity, accomplishment, achievement, and

This study examines the production of verb morphology by children acquiring two typologically different languages – Russian and English. The focus of the study is on the correlation between aspect, tense and Aktionsart in child languages. In many languages, a strong correlation has been observed in the use of the resultative Aktionsart (telic types of verbs: achievements and accomplishments) and the perfective aspect in the past tense, on the one hand, and between the non-resultative Aktionsart (atelic verbs: activities, states and semelfactives) and the imperfective aspect in the present tens

Abstract:
The study investigates the ability of Greek-speaking individuals diagnosed with mild Alzheimer's Disease (mAD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to produce verbs that vary with respect to their grammatical and lexical aspect. While grammatical aspect has been examined in aphasia, there are only a few studies dealing with this in neurodegenerative conditions and their findings are contradictory. Motivated by this, we further investigate aspect by examining not only grammatical but lexical aspect as well and how their semantic and temporal features affect mAD and MCI individuals' performance.
